I grew up watching network news as a child in the 1970’s. I remember seeing images of cities burning, people running and chanting, general hysteria. In the background were always huge images of their dear leaders. *That* to me was how it was to live in a totalitarian society. Chaos, fear, and capricious violence.
I can’t tell you how much it makes my skin crawl and the hair stand on the back of my neck to see any blown-up images of our new dear leader. And the video shown in the school in Utah – with his image and asking kids “how they can serve him”.
Do young people today just have no sense of what this kind of imagery is all about? Do the deaths of millions of Chinese, Russians, Cubans, Koreans, and Vietnamese mean nothing? I’m afraid I do know the answer — it’s all relative if it’s for the “greater good”.
I for one am going to keep a close eye on the NEA.
This cracks me up. Fox News has been proven to be repeating Bush white house directives of how to present the news and what subjects to focus on each day (ie propaganda) as ‘news’ for 8 years. Very effective as propaganda. And you guys are getting concerned about some artists splashing paint around or making a song that supports health care reform – if artists agree with the president why should they not be free to make art supporting that ? Remember the 80s when the right wing was successful in getting artists de-funded from NEA grants because they made art that ‘insulted’ right wing beliefs such as once that questioned religion, had nudity etc.? If the artists themselves WANT to support Obama (and I think you will find as a generalization that more artists are liberals, anarchists and socialists than conservative republicans as a whole) then I believe they have a right to do that. NEA funding should not be doled out because of political beliefs. If someone finds that you must support Obama to get NEA funding, then that would be a big story, but this is small peanuts.
PS I highly doubt this conference call broke ANY laws. The NEA was started in the 1930s by FDR as a way to fund arts in the great depression. It was very political back then and funded many public art projects that were all about recovering from that economic crisis, bringing up the spirits of the people, documenting rural poverty (so that people in the cities would see it and support legislation to help said people) etc.. Most of those famous ‘great depression’ photographs you see published now are from those original projects, as are many murals and paintings in public buildings around the country.

Web Runner, I am a lifelong hard-core anti-communist and, through some study of many different countries (including the US), have figured out that roughly 10-20% of the population of any free society has been sucked into some variation of the secular communist/green/socialist/progressive religion. I believe that Jennifer not only lives in this country, but that there are about 30-60 million others here that are pretty much like her. Luckily, there is an approximately equal number of anti-communists/libertarians/freedom lovers, with most others being somewhere else in between. Communists/greens/socialists/progressives are almost all moral relativists and thus cannot lie or be hypocritical (in their own mind), since they cannot believe anything is absolutely true (except for what their leadership says is true (regardless of whether their statements directly contradict what they said previously)).

If you do not want to support it, you’re not forced to through taxation.
Thank you for pointing out the fact that the NEA has been used as a method of promulgating government propaganda since the 1930s. But just because it was conceived by FDR during the 1930s still does not make it right- it is still a total anathema to the constitution.
