I find it almost poetic that his own campaign finance reforms did him when he played by those rules and Obama opted out. The Dems were more than happy to let him hang himself out to dry.

It took liberal Democrats voting as Republicans in early primaries to help McCain defeat other candidates in the early states.

McCain has never been a conservative, and I’m sure his handlers resented Palin’s commitment to conservative causes.

Now that the election is over, they’re looking to blame someone–but without Palin, McCain would have faced a complete landslide. She gave us hope that he might find his way back to the Reagan-esque ideals that made this party great.

I wish her well. She and her family have endured unfair and mostly unfounded criticism by agreeing to serve as the VP nominee.

The concern many of us had was that her general lack of knowing much of anything would not prevent her from having strong opinions on the subject anyway, potentially affecting policy. Embryonic stem cell research is an example. I am sure she is against it but I doubt she has even a passing acquaintance with the subject matter.

Sarah Palin epitomizes everything that’s wrong with the Republican party today. All these folks pander to the Christian right to get votes and couldn’t care less about the founding principles of the party: limited government, personal liberty, fiscal responsibility, and a strong–but seldom used–national defense.

I see so many on here jumping to proclaim Mrs. Palin the future of the Republican party. If that’s the case, you all can look forward to losing to the socialists for the next few decades. You want to point fingers and lay blame for this mess?

You can scream about abortion, prayer in school, placing religious icons in public, and try to pass legislation that codifies morality to your heart’s content. Limbaugh and Hannity (“Hannitize” THIS, you jerk!) can be the official spokesmen, Sarah can be your pin up girl, Liberty University can be the source of your intelligentsia (if you can call it that), and a red, white, and blue cross can be your symbol. Airwick: It probably won’t happen. The party will keep pandering to evangelicals because it needs their votes. And evangelicals will keep wondering why nothing ever happens with abortion or gay marriage.

It’s a bit like Democrats and their war on poverty. Ever noticed how the war never ends? If the war ended, the votes might disappear.

Republicans need to calmly explain to evangelicals that their personal beliefs are fine, but they’re just that–personal. If they believe in the principles I stated above in my previous post, they should vote for Republicans.

However, the party also needs to return to those principles (in action, not just by paying lip service) in order to attract the more conservative Democrats and independents. There are plenty of folks in the center and even on the left who believe in limited efficient government, and the party can’t win those people over by pandering to a small group of religious-minded voters who alienate most people in the center and on the left.

The problem is, the Republican party has all but abandoned its founding principles. Mr. Bush grew the size of the federal government by 30%. He radically empowered the executive branch. He ballooned the national debt. Yet through all of this, there was hardly a peep from most Republicans. To point out these facts is considered “un-Republican,” “un-American,” or “unpatriotic,” when nothing could be further from the truth.

The Republican party is in a crisis-state right now. And I’m really not sure if it can recover. Judging by the bulk of the posts on here, I kind of doubt it. Oh well. There’s always the Libertarian and Constitution parties, folks.
