This is good news, and a wise decision made by a pregressive educator. All childen from 3 years old to 18 should be required to hear President Obama speak to them. I would even sugest there be a test afterwards with a 80% passage required. It is a important event that should be celebrated by all of our school children and i applaud this decission. Obama knows how to talk to kids and teenagers just look at how smart and behaved his two daughters are, that is proof enough for me. Right now I have our glorious president Obama on the TV in my Ice Cream parlor and all of my customers are enjoying his words of wisdom along with me. When Obama speaks we should stop anything we are doing and listen in order to educate ourselfs.

The school system has no right to threaten parents and especially kids over decisions made by the parents. Kids’ education is the responsibility of their parents, not the government, and definitely not the broken government schools. Government bureaucracy breaks everything it touches, and the public school system is an example of this.
Threatening the parents with punishment of the kids over decisions by the parents in this manner over this subject is disgusting and evil. It is important that parents tell this superintendent what they think of his little dictatorial moment, as any case where a government employee oversteps his bounds needs to be checked. The parents need to make sure that the government knows that their children are, in fact, their children, and not the government’s property.

Roger Stone’s arguments are ridiculous. These are not adults being “forced to participate”, they are students who are being required to attend what has been defined as a civics lesson. And that is what it is. I could not even imagine there having been an uproar when any Republican president addressed our children. Any protester would have been labeled “un-American” and subversive. Now the Republicans do not want our children to hear their president encourage them to stay in school, study, and work hard toward their (and our) future. This is more than “silly”, in fact, it subverts the children’s respect for the office of the president.

I have children in the Broward County School District, so I contacted the Superintendent and all of the members of the School Board to voice my strong disagreement with the decision to make viewing of this speech mandatory before they knew the contents of the speech. The responses I received were nonsensical and basically pointed the finger back at me. Amazing to have that kind of response from an elected offical. It’s not even worth my time to respond.
I have no problem with a President speaking to school children about the importance of education and staying in school. I think that’s admirable. However, what parents were objecting to were the “lesson plans” that were to be done before and after the speech.
With respect to the Broward School District, however, the issue is the fact that that a decision was made by the School Board of Broward County that completely cut out the parent. And that is wrong. I have a right to be involved with my children’s education – but the School Board doesn’t see it that way. The School Board and Superintendent should have made alternate arrangements for students whose parents were uncomfortable with the speech and the supporting lesson plans, which is where the original objection came from to begin with.
What blows my mind even more is the claim that this is a “civics” lesson. How this determination by Superintendent Notter and the School Board can be made 4 days BEFORE the speech was even released to the public is beyond me. Last time I checked, school curriculum was required to be read and approved. We already teach Civics in our public schools under an approved curriculum. The President has enough on his plate right now – he doesn’t need to be a teacher as well.

Just when you think the obama administration is incapable of yet another major misstep, they quickly prove you wrong! The underlying idea of the POTUS encouraging young students to be the best that they can be, and to be good students, etc., etc., I don’t find offensive. What I find offensive is that it is made MANDATORY. Your kid(s) will be in class or else! We can opt out of the Pledge of Allegiance (Heaven forbid a child were required to say that!). I’m dating myself, but when I went to school, the Pledge was said everyday while we stood at our desks. It was suggested that we even put our hand over our heart as we said it. Oh me oh my! After years of being exposed to that, it had this awful side effect of of making me rather proud of my country and the Flag! How horrible! As for prayer, thank goodness it was discontinued when I was in the fourth or fifth grade I believe. I can only imagine the harm that it would have done to me if I had continued to repeat a prayer each day at school. The moral implications are mind boggling! I don’t even want to THINK of how good I might have turned out if school prayer had continued up through 12th grade!
Can you imagine the outrage by liberals if George W. Bush was the POTUS who was forcing students to listen to his speech?!? 150 decibels of sheer endless screaming outrage from every quadrant of the liberal empire (see Roman Empire just before the fall). Okay, there’s nothing inherently wrong about a president making a speech that is played to school kids; many presidents have done so in the past.
But the speech should NOT be:
*mandatory
*one speech fits all (Why expect a kindergartner to understand all those big words and have the same attention span as a ninth grader or h.s. senior?
*heavily, heavily focused on “ALL YOU POOR KIDS WITH ALL YOUR OVERWHELMING PROBLEMS AND BURDENS”!
*saturated with countless references to ME-ME-ME (MR. O.’s experiences)
We read the speech in its entirety on the gov. site. It was VERY VERY LONG (too long), had lots of VERY BIG WORDS that many younger kids won’t even understand, and was HEAVILY FOCUSED ON “UNDERPRIVILEGED, TROUBLED” youngsters. I.e., the speech really was geared for the young ACORNITES (and maybe offspring of immigrants) in America. This is WRONG. There are a lot of hidden assumptions in his speech that betray his own BIASES and AGENDA.
There are millions of young kids in school who have problems at home (maybe a broken home, maybe a violent home, maybe parent(s) are alcoholics or drug addicts, maybe there are too many mouths to feed and not enough food, maybe the parents or sibs have mental illness, maybe parent(s) are out of work, on and on and on, and yet MILLIONS OF THOSE KIDS DO NOT DROP OUT OF SCHOOL OR CAUSE PROBLEMS OR HAVE DIFFICULTY LEARNING TO READ AND WRITE. Many of those kids with troubles at home become OUTSTANDING STUDENTS and go on to live happy, productive lives–WITHOUT INTERVENTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT!!
STOP ASSUMING THAT HAVING DIFFICULTIES IS A HANDICAP THAT ONLY UNCLE SAM-BO CAN ADDRESS & TRY TO RECTIFY!

Did you happen to catch the video at the top of this thread that started this thread and is what people are blogging about???? I think this is where the MANDATORY came from. You see, Broward County in Florida is HIGHLY democrat/liberal, as is the school board. THEY are the ones who are representing their POTUS, and on his behalf, they are telling parents and students alike, that they may NOT opt out tomorrow. That they MUST be at school or there will be repercussions. What those might be don’t seem to have been stated yet. Seems pretty mandatory. So if you haven’t listened to the video, you might want to give it a try. This way, you will have a better understanding of the posts that you seem to be so vehemently opposed to. You might even owe them an apology, because you can be very certain that no Republican school board would pull a stunt like this if it was a Republican POTUS giving a speech tomorrow. It simply isn’t their modis operendi.

First of all, let me say that nobody should every be required to watch any speech of any kind. If this is a free country, let it be one. I can understand why people are concerned, as “O” has lost the trust of many people.
I read the transcript of the speech and have to say that I personally don’t have an issue with any part of the speech. It is geared toward the vulnerable student. I will allow my children to listen to it. It does not appear to be propaganda.
I liked that he tells the children to read a book and that they are probably not going to be a rap star or a professional athlete. I read the goals that an entire 5th grade class had in our school district and was shocked at the number of kids that thought they were going to become a professional athlete or be in the Olympics. Very few of the long range goals were realistic. It was shocking.
The problem I have with most of these types of pep talks is that it is always targets the vulnerable. The kids that are actually DOING the things he is describing have to sit though and listen to it again. My son complained that he will have to write out a set of goals AGAIN. He has had to do this many times in school already. It is a waste of his time.
I am disappointed with Arne Duncan. I listened to him on Meet the Press. He called the people that are concerned about the speech “silly”. I don’t think more name calling is going to win much support. I wonder what would happen if one of my kids called the Principal or one of the teachers “silly”? It is very unprofessional. This is coming from the head of the US Education Department.
If they really wanted to help raise the level of education in schools, they might start with stopping the deception of progress. Many of the states have lowered the standard for “passing”. It makes it look like more kids are passing the tests. It is just a lie. No child left behind is a failure as far as I’m concerned. Not only does it punish the kids that are exceeding the expectations, it has caused the lowering of standards.
A speech may inspire some students to do better, but they are going to have to work to solve the bigger issues in education. The first step will involve being honest about the progress.

I have not read the speech and do favor the idea of the President supporting education but here’s the thing. As a teacher in training, currently substituting mainly in H.S over the past two years, I can guarantee no matter the intent, this will become a bit of a bore to the students. They’ve heard the same thing over and over for years from dedicated teachers and parents, and even the non dedicated types. Obama is hanging his hat where it really isn’t needed and if he wants to encourage students to stay in school, he needs to concentrate on the matters of his office and be the best he can be – avoid becoming another lecturing adult to these – they’re brighter than most give ‘em credit for and will begin to wonder the more they see of him this way. Most were required to watch and listen to his inaugural earlier in the year = when you over saturate your audience it can undercut your credibility.

While it’s certainly true that enough white people voted for Obama to put him in the Oval Office, the blunt fact remains that a majority of white people did not. Although Obama beat John McCain in the popular vote by an impressive seven-point margin, McCain beat Obama among white voters by an even more impressive 12-point margin. Obama got 53 percent of the broad electorate to vote for him but only 43 percent of the white electorate. When I say “white electorate,” I don’t mean the white working class, or white Southerners, or any other subgroup whose capacity for racial tolerance has long been held suspect. I mean all white voters.
I said to many who voted for Mr Obama,both black and white.While they were ecstatic over the fact that Mr Obama won.That we had NOT OVERCOME because Mr Obama won.We have a problem in this country where racism has been taught from one generation to the next.
It does a have a feel of the 1960 Civil Rights movement.
The good thing about this, many whites are aging out of their lock-step Republicanism. Mr Obama won 54 percent of all white voters age 18 to 29, to McCain’s 44 percent.
