It would have been quite simple to have the IRS issue a voucher to allow poor folks to purchase private insurance, and the government to underwrite catastrophic cases. What we have now is an abortion. Already cutting edge drugs are being withheld due to cost. Already people who would live, are being condemned to die due to a bean counter far away. Fact is government care in America already had double the number of rejections for care than the private sector. Within a few years Obama-care will:
Reduce new drug development.
Severely crimp new surgical technologies.
Slow new people entering the healthcare field lowering general knowledge of health employees to save costs.
Make hospitals dirtier than they are today.
Increase Nurse to Patient ratio.
Reduce number of physicians in the system, really reduce number of specialists.
