Flashback: Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance

The following words were spoken by the late Red Skelton on his television program as he related the story of his teacher, Mr. Laswell, who felt his students had come to think of the Pledge of Allegiance as merely something to recite in class each day. Now, more than ever, listen to the meaning of these words. "I've been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word?"

They don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Danny Thomas. There were many more, all great in their time. Fast forward to Dave Letterman, Bill Maher, UGH, I can’t go on! Jay Leno is the only one I watch.

Ah, the memories. I play this for my students every semester.

“United…that means we have all come together.” Back in the fifties, we didn’t have the polarization we see today. Nowadays, millions of Americans absolutely hate their president (same was true under Bush) and will use any excuse to condemn the smallest mistakes. They don’t respect the will of the people or the democratic process. (Thanks, Rush!)

It was great to grow up in the golden age of TV. Art Linkletter, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Lucy Ball and Desi Arnez. The bulls**t on TV now is atrocious. I was done with “free” TV after “Will&Grace”. Thank goodness for TCM and Nick at Night.
Think about your kids and Grand kids that have been exposed their whole lives to the degradation of the culture.

In 1964, a child could go to a public school by walking and be safe. At the school, the child would be guaranteed the best education on earth. You could get top-notch health care and have a good paying job. In 2009, Public Schools are quasi-jails with police patrolling the halls. Students will get the worst education on earth. Something happened. And only when someone with bravery and determination takes the world of 1964 and looks at all the legislation, policies, and other things that happened over the next decade will he see the cause of this catastrophe. We cannot return to this time politically and peacefully, it will have to be by force of arms. Do conservatives have the stomach for what this means? As Patton said that no war was ever one by dying for your country, it will be won by making the Liberal “die for his beliefs”. We talk about the 2nd Amendment and standing for our beliefs, but that stand might mean forcing our enemies to “make the ultimate sacrifice”. They could be your neighbor, your co-worker, or a family member. This happened in the Civil War – we are not more civilized today. The liberals WILL NOT allow us to go back to our roots. They will fight to stop it. Do we have the stomach to do what must be done. I am not talking about right and wrong, I am talking about necessary. War and the slaughter that comes with it is not right or wrong, but it is necessary sometimes. If it is not necessary enough for you to do whatever it takes to kill the enemy, then don’t fight it. I have asked most of our conservative leaders about this possibility and all of them say “of course not… we can’t do that”. We have lost already. Most of our Conservative pundits are simply entertainers making money off of a leftist in the White House. In many ways it is a boon to them. With this reality the only alternative is to emigrate to another country. If we had these leaders in 1776 or 1861, we would still be British or we would have 2 nations. I do not belong to any group nor do I own a gun of any sort. I am simply raising some inconvenient questions that every rank and file conservative better ponder.

So don’t make Limbaugh your whipping boy, it was the liberals that don’t like to follow the rule of law and accept the results of an election. You today are just seeing the inevitable “tit” for “tat”. And it is typical of the Liberal Neurosis to say, “well we were wrong, but you should do the right thing”. Even though, when that Monkey in the White House is defeated in 2012, all you “pond scum” will immediately start your petulance again. We know that you scum public school teachers have an agenda to create sheep. You are the enemy of freedom and the REPUBLIC – big difference from a democracy – you moron. You are right: the civility is gone, and if you read my post and had the intellectual honesty to see the cause and effect between 1964 and 2009 you would agree that you are part of the problem.

I feel it will be the purpose of Conservatives to expurgate problems like you as if you were cancer.

I also say Obama was elected by allowing several million illegals and legal aliens voting. Of course they don’t have the right, but nobody checks them do they now? That would be “racist” wouldn’t it? And every Indian I work with bragged about voting for Obama, and they were all green card holders! You people can’t win except by cheating.

What can you say? Todays America is not the America under our founders or even the America just 40 years ago. Marxism and Statism is slowly bleeding our great country.

From the legalization of killing innocent unborn babies, to removing God from the pledge and our public schools, these statists have been at war with America since the sixties and few knew it until now. Now Americans are finally seeing it and I don’t think it is too late to fight back. America is that shining city on a hill Ronald Reagan spoke of. Now it is up to me and all of you who love this country as I do to stand up with me as new patriots as our founders did years ago against the tyranny of the King to get the power back from the kings and queens in Congress and the White house and give it back to the people. The US Constitution asks us to “defend it from all enemies foreign and domestic”, and my friends, we are under attack from the “enemy within”. Do not look at these people as just “Americans with different opinions”. They are not. These people are Americas enemy. Freedoms enemy. Innocent unborn lifes enemy. Faiths enemy. This country needs to be refounded to its original constitution and it is not up to politicians, talk radio hosts or even Fox News to save this country (although we thank them greatly), it is up to us, the American people. We are the ones who stopped amnesty for illegal aliens, we are the ones who are stopping socialist health care and it will be us to re found this country the way Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Revere and Henry did. No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope that it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen, if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.

This is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty towards the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.

Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren, till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation?

For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth — to know the worst and to provide for it. I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years, to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House?

Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer on the subject? Nothing.

We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves longer.

Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament.

Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne. In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope.

If we wish to be free — if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending — if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained, we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us!

They tell us, sir, that we are weak — unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance, by lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?

Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of the means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us.

The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable — and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come!

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, “Peace! Peace!” — but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!
