HUH? Plenty of African and Middle Eastern countries still had legalized slavery in the 20th Century and some still do. Mauritania didn't make it illegal until 2003, Yemen 1963 and others a little earlier this century. Fact is, they many still just do it and don't enforce it.

The word "Slave" comes from the word Slav because so many of the Slavic people of Europe were taken as slaves by the Northern African and Middle Eastern peoples who continually traded in slaves for B.C. forward years. They were taking white slaves for centuries. Besides the Romans, the Europeans didn't even get in on the slave trade until the Portuguese went to Northern Africa in 1498 and started the slave trade with the African tribes. There were four major tribes they traded with. Europeans didn't catch their own slaves, they just traded with the black tribes for theirs and exported them to cultivate sugar plantations to make rum, initially.

In the USA: in 1854 only democrats were the slave owners and controlled both houses and the Presidency. They wanted to expand slavery to the rest of the country. People spontaneously rose up like the Tea Party is now, and within weeks/months they formed the anti-slavery party — the Republican party. In 6 short years they controlled both houses and the White House. The democrats started firing shots within 30 days of Lincoln's inauguration, and the war was on. We only begrudgingly tolerated slavery from 1780 to 1860 as a country — 80 years. (We were British before that).

It is the only time in recorded history that a civil war was fought by one race of people for the freedom of another race, for the freedom of slaves, or for the freedom of another class.

Have you had the chance to actually read James Cone's book or any other work of liberation theology? Or have you just heard people talking about what James Cone supposedly says? It's actually quite interesting to compared the huge difference between what liberation theology actually says and what the opponents of liberation theology actually says. It's in many ways similar to the accusations that were made during the Synod of Dort between Calvinists and the Arminians. They made straw man arguments to help their side "win." The same thing happens in liberation theology. But don't take my word for it. Read the actual literature, not just the commentary.
