1. Mr. Obama was elected to office; he did not seize power.
2. The present administration has not attempted to usurp power or expand it beyond what is in the Constitution. They haven’t dismissed Congress, declared martial law, or tried to appoint Mr. Obama “President for Life”. No “despotism” has been even remotely attempted.
3. You LOST the last election. Deal with it! The American way is to rebuild your party and try again in the next round of elections. If you don’t like his policies, then TOO BAD! A lot of people did not like the previous administration’s policies either but you didn’t see them advocating armed insurrection.

I think it’s clear that some folks don’t think there’s EVER a reason to “throw off” the government, and those folks need to do some history study before they try to suggest it’s some kind of nutty idea. Our country was founded on that very idea. So lets be clear, the Declaration and early American writings like the Federalist Papers DO clearly enunciate the principle of the people having a right and duty to throw off the government when it becomes tyrannical.
What’s at issue in THIS thread is whether or not the current circumstances warrant an overthrow. That, of course, is totally up to debate. What’s NOT debatable is the the clear fact that overthrowing the government if it becomes tyrannical is rooted in foundational American political thought. As I said, it forms the justification for our own independence war.
Another thing I’m getting sick and tired of is the idea that if you label someone extreme, it connotates “nutjob.” Some things are extreme in the sense of being out of proportion to the issue at hand; other things are extreme in the sense that they are stronger measures than others. If you have gangrene of the foot and ankle, the physician may act like an “extremist” and recommend amputation at the knee to prevent the spread of a disease that will kill you. To me, that’s what overthrow is about–it’s a severe measure undertaken to prevent the eventuation of a MUCH WORSE situation.
I don’t think we’re at quite that point yet, but I do think that on the current trajectory we’re on, we’re not far. And that is not just a Democrat thing in my eyes; many Republicans are complicit in the takeover of our liberty by a totally out-of-control federal government.
And as for the “Obama was elected” well, so was Hitler. That is, he came to power legally. It’s what he is doing now that he’s in office that is under discussion. Can you not accept the reality that a person may do many things that are unconstitutional, that threaten or diminish real liberties and yet not be leading a huge army of marauders down the street and breaking into homes? The frog in the pot boils slowly, but he’s boiling nonetheless. Certainly the Left saw everything Bush did, from jogging and biking to, of course, the war on terror as an all-out assault of liberty that warranted his impeachment. So please don’t come here with the cheesy, “Obama was elected!” and “I don’t see any armies marching down the street!” That’s all cute and what not but misleading and thinking people know it.

Over 230 years ago, 13 colonies some how came together and formed militias and a regular army with no prior training and little money. They challenged the largest, most powerful army in the world that already had occupied their land. They fought for years and nearly lost the fight, but eventually threw off the tyrant King and his men. Of all the colonials living in those 13 colonies, roughly 1/3 were loyalist, subserviant subjects, another third just sat it out and tried to stay on the fence, and a final third acctually put up money, provoided support for, or took up arms to actually fight against the tyranny they abhorred.

The speech I was reading was Patrick Henry’s address from Richmond, March 23, 1775. The character assassins at Huff Po edited the tape to begin mid sentence where Patrick Henry said, “Our chains are forged! Their clanging may be heard on the plains of Boston. The war is inevitable-and let it come!…”
From that they deliberately tried to insinuate that I was advocating war! Where is the outrage about that?
This type of editing and deliberate provocation is despicable. In the same speech, Patrick Henry said “Besides, sir, we have no election.” The point of my comments was that we do have an election, we do have the ability to take hold of our freedoms with the ballot box so we don’t have to refer to the bullet box as our Founding Fathers did.

IMO she stated the obvious to people who feel disaffected as they see congress acting more like rulers than representatives, disaffected by the “most open administration ever” ramming through legislation that no one has even read, and disaffected by media that focuses more on the culture of entitlement than the ethic or work. These disaffected people want to use the ballot box. More importantly they want others to understand what this country is founded upon. They want real change, representatives that represent their views, a Supreme Court that interprets rather than makes laws, an executive branch that means what it says.
Mr. Stephen D. Oliver’s comments have to be some of the most sensible remarks I have read so far about ths question of opposing the government.
There is great concern that the Obama administration has no respect for the constitution and wants to fundamentally change the relationship of the federal government to the people it was created to SERVE.
With the current Supreme Court appointee and Eric Holder as Attorney General, as just two examples, there is adequate reason for this concern.
Hopefully the power of the ballot box in 2010 will be strong enough to put a stop to this administration’s campaign to accrue ever more power unto itself.
