Edwards’ Campaign Demands Student Journalist Yank Story From YouTube

"The Carolina Week staff learned the importance of standing their ground against a disgruntled source, even when that source is a candidate for president." See the related link for details on the controversy on this story.

Liberals believe they have free speech and you have hate speech. They can say any nasty thing they want about anyone and claim it’s a constitutional right. Your opinions need to be censored “to keep everyone on the same page.”

Doc Wright, USN,RET   October 26th, 2007 - 3:49 pm

John Edwards will thankfully never be President, but this story is another reason why he should NOT be. He DEMANDS A STUDEN JURNALIST YANK HIS STORY!!!! What a compleet enemy of the U.S. Constitution. I am a 23 year Navy/Marin Vet. I stood in the gap to protect and defent the Constitution aginst all enemies. John Edwards is now one of those enemies. He is DEMANDING this studen give up his freedome of speach.

John Edward is not one of us. He has not been one of us, one of “We the people” for a very long time. If, as a candidate he is trying to take away freedome of speech …. what worse can we expect as a President. John …. Your fired.

Mitch Pawl   October 26th, 2007 - 3:55 pm

WOW, there are two sets of Americans – John Edwards and the poor normal folks.

PRE   October 26th, 2007 - 3:58 pm

How many starving people could you feed for the cost of just one of Edwards’ haircuts? This guy is a joke. He just know that there are plenty of poor voters and is trying to use them to promote himself.

Russ Jones   October 26th, 2007 - 4:08 pm

First off, John Edwards didn’t do or say anything. John Edwards staffers (most likely volunteers) asked that it be taken down – not some campaign bigwig.

Secondly, the Carolina Week should be ashamed for putting together such a terrible non-story, hit-piece on Edwards. Edwards has chosen to headquarter his campaign in Chapel Hill, NC – far less expensive than the major city offices of Clinton, Obama, and even the other 2nd tier candidates. He has chosen to take public matching funds rather than sell himself to PACs and Lobbyists like the other candidates. He has done more than any other candidate to keep money from running his campaign and yet you still attack him.

What or where would you rather see Edwards’ HQ? Franklin Street (just as expensive), RTP (just as expensive), Pittsboro? Hillsborough? Should he just drive his staff to the middle of nowhere?

The crazy thing is that if Edwards HQ was renting out extremely expensive office space in a posh DC office space, right down the street from the main DC lobby, Carolina Week wouldn’t have run a story.

I’ve got a news story for you, get the Lease Agreements for each of the major campaigns and put the pricing side-by-side. Then tell me if you still have a story.

Laves sus Manos   October 26th, 2007 - 4:08 pm

and just exactly what is wrong with this that Edwards wants it pulled?

actually, it’s better reporting than I see on the major networks!

(oh! maybe THAT’s the reason!)

Lawrence P   October 26th, 2007 - 4:18 pm

This is another example of the way this guy thinks! Now he wants to stifle free speech from a Journalism STUDENT? The speech should always be free for their point of view..but oppose them..and they want you to shut up. Let him go back to chasing ambulances.

H5n1   October 26th, 2007 - 4:23 pm

That was a very professionally done story and absolutely as relevant as any “prfoessional” news outlet would do. If that story was about Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney it would have been picked up by the mainstream media already and broadcast around the world.

josai   October 26th, 2007 - 4:28 pm

Looking at his “home” from above, the amount of clear cutting he did to accomodate his new “home” is nothing short of egregious. There is nothing green about this phony. I wonder if this pad has composting toliets and a clothes line 50 yards long or a self containing solar grid? He bought those 106 acres so he wouldn’t be “bothered” by those icky people from other places. It looks as though these kids on the staff are nice affluent youngsters from country club stock who were told to feel guilty for being just that. Tell this chump to go stand in front of his mirror because he truly is a legend in his own mind.

Jeff B.   October 26th, 2007 - 4:29 pm

The finance intern first says that the campaign headquarters symbolizes the fact that Edwards is not a candidate tied to Washington D.C. but is a candidate for voters outside the Beltway.

He then says that the campaign headquarter’s location is not emblematic of a candidate’s stance on the issues.

The message that I get is that if the Edwards campaign can spin the location of their campaign headquarters in a favorable light, it has meaning; otherwise, the location is irrelevant.

I think this sums up the entire Edwards’ campaign in a nutshell. We should take John Edwards at his word, no matter what he says or does. This is the man who stated that people in wheelchairs would walk again if John Kerry was elected US Pres. (an himself becoming the US VP).

Amazing.

Bunny   October 26th, 2007 - 4:29 pm

Yawn

DJH   October 26th, 2007 - 4:31 pm

Edwards is a walking contradiction who is far to big a baby to defend himself, so I’m sure it was his staff and not he who tried to strong arm this thing.
I do agree that it’s a non-story which makes the attempt to kill the story all the more telling.

Why is he even wasting other peoples money to run? He has ZERO chance of getting the nomination and if he did the right could run a throw rug against him and win.

Frank   October 26th, 2007 - 4:33 pm

Russ, do you actually believe what you’re saying?

There is no way in h*ll a volunteer campaign staffer took it upon themselves to call the University and ask that this story be spiked. If that had happened, that fact would have been released immediately by Edward’s campaign and we would be told that the inexperienced staffer had been disciplined.

Please quit dreaming up apologies for these people. They’re much better liars than you and will come up with something better on their own.

Albert Meyer   October 26th, 2007 - 4:36 pm

Dr. Paul runs for We the People. He treated poor patients for free rather than take Medicare payments.

He returns political contributions received from corporations! His average donation is $40 per person. He raised $5 million in Q3 and is on tract to raise $3 million in October.

He declined his very lucrative Congressional pension, because he does not believe he has a right to grab part of your paycheck and you have no obligation to take care of his retirement. In 30 years he has never taken a single political junket. He has never done a single deal with a special interest group or corporation.

He will allow young people to opt out of Social Security. He knows young people will never enjoy the benefits of Social Security, so why tax them?

Now, here’s an honest politician with integrity. He is the lone Republican who opposed the war, when it was still only on the White House agenda, long before 9/11. He will bring our troops home and end the suffering in Iraq. A vote for Ron Paul will restore our image abroad.

His record takes one’s breath away. For thirty years he cast every one of his votes strictly in accordance with the Constitution.

Don’t think Republican vs Democrat. Think honesty, integrity, my future, my children’s future vs. political graft, special interests, lobbyists, 9$9 trillion Federal debt, incurring $500 billion in interest annually. The Iraq war will add another $2.4 trillion. It’s like light vs darkness. It’s an easy choice. Vote Ron Paul, it will change the country for ever, for the better.

fred   October 26th, 2007 - 4:47 pm

John Edwards is an ambulance chasing sleazeball lawyer who “spoke to dead children’s spirits” to win HUGE settlements, which he regularly go 40% or more…of course, he never got disbarred like slick willy did for piddling on the fat girl in the oval office (Bill, it’s NOT ORAL office…schmuck). He’s almost as well liked in his community as that mouth breathing nitwit algore is in Tennessee. If it weren’t for his career in chasing down family’s of dead kids, you’d be able to see him regularly if you took a free weekend and “spent only 90 minutes taking a timeshare tour…” friggin greaseball.

jonathan   October 26th, 2007 - 4:52 pm

Just wait until John gets home a gets another beating from his wife! His home is a hell of a lot more expensive than 6 million. It’s a good thing he will be hidden in those backwoods, so we won’t have to hear her screaming at him; besides, according to him there is 2 America’s, his and the rest of ours!

JTHC   October 26th, 2007 - 5:01 pm

That Edwards campaign hack is classic. On the one hand, the decision to locate the HQ outside of DC shows that Edwards cares about regular people. On the other hand, the fact that it’s in a rich neighborhood of Chapel Hill is meaningless. In other words, spin spin spin!

Andrew   October 26th, 2007 - 5:06 pm

Very well said Fred…

I am just glad that John Edwards will NEVER become president of this country. If the French did not just elect a pro-American president, I would have suggested that as a place he could run and win on his anti-America platform.

BTW, the field reporter was cute!

Blogger1947   October 26th, 2007 - 5:10 pm

Edwards could easily have made a grand symbolic gesture, by setting up his HQ in New Orleans, Bay St. Louis, or Biloxi.

But I suppose it’s easier for him to advocate spending OUR money there, than to leave any of his own dollars along the Gulf Coast.

Bert   October 26th, 2007 - 5:20 pm

There is nothing wrong with this clip. It’s actually very good. The Edwards campaign should worry more about the other candidates.

Al C.   October 26th, 2007 - 5:23 pm

There is nothing wrong with this story. It’s fair and examines both sides of the issue. Unfortunately, Edwards would make a terrible president and his campaign’s objection reflects his inability to deal with differing points of view. Hopefully, once the primaries begin he will withdraw and go back to his estate and rich friends.

J.D.   October 26th, 2007 - 5:24 pm

First Nation Han says that where Edwards is setting up headquarters says a lot about his campaign. Thirty seconds later, he argues that where Edwards sets up his headquarters says nothing about his campaign. Does he have an actual opinion? Is it even worth listening to?

Ryan   October 26th, 2007 - 5:42 pm

Does Edwards really think he is still in the race for the democrat nominee? I would advise him to go back to the hedge fund and learn more about the poor than waste anymore money on his joke of a campaign.

Glad it backfired and is getting NATIONAL attention now! Edwards is so disconnected with real people!

Tony Pistone   October 26th, 2007 - 5:43 pm

Wait a minute! The SAME GUY says, “I don’t think where you set up your headquarters is emblamatic of what your stance on the issues is…” after he says that setting up his campaign headquarters outside of D.C. shows Edwards is not tied to D.C. and is a man for the common person. This is a case of one idiot hiring another idiot! “His work on the issues…?” You mean, like his work for the hedge fund companies that displaced the poor victims of Katrina from their homes?

Not that I’m worried. Edwards is a nobody. He isn’t even a politican. He’s just a wanna-be politician now. He won’t be President.

Edwards is the Dan Quayle of the Democratic Party, and this isn’t the first instance of him hiring idiots.

And Russ, you make it sound like I should admire Edwards for using “matching public funds.” You mean TAX DOLLARS?!? I’m sorry, but I have better things to spend my money on than supporting the campaign of a rich loser who claimed (in court…WHERE ARE THE PERJURY CHARGES) that he could talk to the dead.

Hey Russ Jones (and other Edwards apologists)

I know that most of you simple minded liberals have problems with comprehension, so let me make it clear to you. This is about John Edwards (the ambulance chaser) being a hypocrite. Let me spell that for you: h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e. It means, to say one thing while doing the opposite. This is what the story is about. This man himself is the definition of a hypocrite. What is worse, is that he thinks that the rest of us are too stupid to notice. Apparently, to a certain extent, he is correct. There are plenty of people like you mindlessly singing this man’s praises. The hero of the American left, Joseph Stalin, had a term for people like you. He called you “useful idiots”. That shoe fits today’s American left as never before. Of course, like all good left wingers, you also think that the Newspaper “should be ashamed”. For what? For exercising it’s (her) Constitutional rights by doing an interesting and journalistically competent story that is not in line with your thinking? You and people like you are the Fascists in our society today, not the conservatives. It is the American left that attempts to crush free speech in this Country and you are the living breathing proof (as if any more were needed). Any conservative who tries to lecture on a collage campus today is painfully aware of this ugly fact when they are shouted down and even assaulted by the “brown shirts“ of the American left/socialists. Thank the Gods that the Founders of this great Country recognized that these dark days might one day be upon us and we may need to free ourselves from future Tyrants. That is why they made sure that we had the right to keep firearms. Keep pushing your communist/“one world” agendas down the throats of the American people and some day, you may see first hand what a real civil war looks like!

Chris   October 26th, 2007 - 6:14 pm

Hey, when you pay as much as he does for a haricut, where do you expect him to headquarter? Harlem.

And the thing about removing the video, free speech, yada yada yada, it’s been the standard liberal tactic for years now, no suprise there.

Newt   October 26th, 2007 - 6:31 pm

The UNC guy is a total joke. First he says Edward’s campaign headquater’s location is a sign of Edward’s standing for all American people, and not Washington. Then when confronted with the fact the HQ was in an affluent area, he states, “I don’t think where you set up your HQ is emblematic of where you stand on issues”.

Doctorf   October 26th, 2007 - 6:52 pm

This is another example of the new media. The liberal media no longer controls our news. Edwards, being a left wing ideologist is angry because the constitution protects this type of free speech. The news clip also exposes his hypocrisy. So he wants this news story pulled? Hmm, can anyone say Stalinist regime here? This is the United States Senator Edwards and you cannot suppress free speech.

What I love about the Democrats and their loony fringe (i.e. move on.org, media matters etc) is that they demand their rights to expound on their radical agenda, fair enough. However, they want to suppress all others who wish to expose them or disagree with their vision for America.

Kendall   October 26th, 2007 - 6:57 pm

The one thing that really stands out about the article is the total down the middle reporting. She gave boths side equal time and allowed both sides to counter the other. What more can one ask? Allowing one to him/herself is what it is supposed to be about. That is why the Edwards camp, and all liberals for that matter, want to squash this…it allows people to think for themselves and they can’t have that. They would never get elected.

The reason they rented that office space is because it is located near his house. There really isn’t any commercial real estate that is decent or big in Carrboro/CH that’s an easier commute. The office is just down the street from his house. Saves gas and time, especially for family members that have medical problems. The office is also down the street from UNC Hospital Cancer Center. It is very nice area, but must be a lot cheaper than any office in NYC, DC, SF.

Steve, if you check the related link you will see that she is a student reporter who was doing this for a regular program they air. It was also being used for an MTV “Choose or Lose” contest, hence her attribution at the end.
I’d echo the few comments above that point out that this is a pretty straightforward news report, done in a a professional, responsible manner. It allows both sides to give their side on an issue that has been raised by someone other than the reporter herself.
Shouldn’t that be what good reporting does? For all we know she loves Edwards and plans to vote for him. She can also demonstrate that she is learning her trade well in school.

Ken   October 26th, 2007 - 7:55 pm

The pro-Edwards guy needs to get his ideals straightened out..

First, he states that Edwards put his campaign headquarters outside Washington to show he was outside the ‘realm of the politicos’, and a ‘candidate for everyone’, so to speak.

In the next breath, he says that where Edwards puts his headquarters “is not emblematic of what your stance on the issues are”.

Some of these kids are really brainwashed….

Mauricio   October 26th, 2007 - 8:00 pm

Wow, if he’s a demon you must have a whole lot of bad stuff you could share with us.

Jordan Orosz, The Old Sailor   October 26th, 2007 - 8:07 pm

OPINION: TITLES — JOHN EDWARDS – PRODUCER
The argument on where John Edwards should set up his campaign headquarters is not of great importance if one has no chance of being nominated. The real purpose is where he can find the most chance of political donation with the lowest rental overhead. Donation is everything to a slick operator like Edwards. For you see my fellow Americans, running for President, or most every political office, gives one the opportunity for ‘creative accounting’ resulting in “residue bottom lines to keep.” It is after all, a part of the entertainment industry. Actually, it IS the entertainment industry; including all its free press coverage. If anyone has seen “The Producers” a play designed around the scheme to collect funding for a disastrous musical planned to fail, you will begin to understand the Producer Edwards. The main purpose in running is to cash in under the decoy of public service. Who can squawk when he fails? Everyone in the campaign wins cash. The ‘residue’ is the treasure at the end of the rainbow. That volunteer not paid, that is “Useful Idiots” as Vladimir Lenin would call them, also win, because their idolatry glands flowed for a year, while their parents paid their rent. However if Edwards really wanted a blaring limelight in the press and trump Obama and Evita, oops I meant Hillary, he could transfer his Chapel Hill, North Carolina Headquarters to Harlem, in Manhattan, New York, New York. Becoming the second black nominee would have to be balanced by his accountant regarding the ‘residue’ profit margin countered by uptown rent.

Mr. Right   October 26th, 2007 - 8:24 pm

Nothing makes a hypocrite madder than being caught!

WmWarren   October 26th, 2007 - 8:26 pm

Wow, Jordan, I have to say that is a very interesting (if somewhat cynical) viewpoint on the process. Frankly though, I don’t agree with you. There are some limits on how the money is used (under general theories of fraud even if the money is cleverly spent or held over for uses after the campaign ends unsuccessfully) and, in failed campaigns, sure the top managers get paid what they signed on for (which can be significant amounts of money), but many staffers further down the line get stiffed. Also, the money that most are paid is really a matter of what the market demands for their services. You do not have to hire some political consultant with a name for tens of thousands a month in consulting fees, but if you can raise the money, you probably increase your chances of success by hiring them. Also, many of these people are wealthy already. It isn’t about (or at least solely about) amassing more riches, or signing onto a failed endeavor just to ride private jets for a few months. It is about something far more enticing — power. Still I appreciate your views, they certainly make me think.

John Edwards, the loser, is up to his old tricks again. Don’t like the message? Kill the messenger. Edwards didn’t do SQUAT for the Katrina victims, except forclose on their homes and pocket their cash. Edwards is a worthless bum who, just like Al Gore, couldn’t even win his own state. Pitiful. Go chase some more ambulances, ya big dope!

Brittany Spears   October 26th, 2007 - 10:50 pm

Derickinohio is right on. These wacko lefties, George Soros’s apple polishers, are out of their minds. Edwards is just another on of their flip floppers. And as for the Ron Paul disciples, don’t make me laugh.

Mat   October 26th, 2007 - 11:08 pm

I love the Jay Z poet line. That was great and kind of pathetic. I thought you were supposed to try to get bad press squashed. I would not expect much from the campaign that doesn’t. Doesn’t Edwards have a center to study poverty at UNC?

Matt   October 26th, 2007 - 11:18 pm

This is so much fun. If Edwards makes everyone so mad, I can’t wait until Clinton takes the White House. Most of the people who posted here will probably pop like a big red balloon. I was bored with politics until I saw freaks come out. 2008 is going to be great.

Toni   October 26th, 2007 - 11:20 pm

This isn’t news. It is a sham newcast. Boring.

George   October 26th, 2007 - 11:55 pm

good job, great news story. Edwards is not for the poor, he is for a new socialist state. He knows he can’t be prez now, but he is getting brownie points from the Progressives, and getting richer. What hypocracey!

Jose   October 26th, 2007 - 11:57 pm

Bye Bye Fart Boy!

"The Poet" Jay-Z   October 27th, 2007 - 12:12 am

As the poet Jay-Z I like to say that I am in no way associated nor do I condone the use of my poetry by pretentious white d-bags. Please stop being stupid.

Just my Intuition   October 27th, 2007 - 12:49 am

I think that this whole thing was staged to make you think that there is at least “something” eventful going on in Edwards’s campaign.

(A Celeb trick)

Dear rssrai, please get a grip. Exactly what is it you are accusing the professor of journalism and his student of? practicing journalism? Come on, man, this isn’t even some sort of witch hunt journalism. The story itself is not necessarily detrimental to Edwards, only his attempt to quash it is. Frankly, the point of both sides of the news story seems to be that he should get out and spread his message not try to simply get points from where his headquarters is. Pls drink a beer or a tea or whatever you need to calm down and regain rational thought.

WmWarren   October 27th, 2007 - 1:01 am

Matt, this is mostly interesting because it is hard to see why this report caused a stir. Believe me, if Clinton gets elected, for the most part things will go on as before, but she will quickly get in a hole based entirely on her administration’s own ethical lapses. As bad as the current administration may be (and no one denies it), the former administration was far worse (remember how relived the country was to be rid of it?). I frankly doubt it will matter much who wins, the economy would do differently and my taxes will change, but life will go on. I am more worried about basic freedoms and, just to let you know (but not that it matters), I trust conservatives more than liberals where those are concerned, but both will screw you if you let them take too much power for too long.

Carolyn   October 27th, 2007 - 1:41 am

John Edwards is a snake in the grass.

Billy Carter   October 27th, 2007 - 1:52 am

Mr. Edwards have you heard of William Jennings Bryan? A Rich guy that had three failed presidential bids running as a populist. If you’re going to talk the talk, you’ve got to walk the walk.

Mark   October 27th, 2007 - 1:52 am

Why are there so many spelling mistakes in these posts? What are you guys being taught in our schools these days? For example:

“John Edwards is far to big a baby”

should use “too”, not “to”. Seriously, it’s embarassing when foreigners have a better command of English than the natives.

Henry   October 27th, 2007 - 3:36 am

The left once again shows their true colors, Facists jackbooted censoring scum. Who believe in free speech only when they agree with the content, everything else is hate speech.

Tracy   October 27th, 2007 - 3:53 am

Edwards is a pinhead!

greg hunt   October 27th, 2007 - 4:47 am

hahahahaha rofl what a joke. vote democratic and watch your world go down the toilet . they are already making their plans to raise taxes , then well run out of every place we are standing strong and winning! with our tails between our legs!! yes by all means vote democratic

Josh   October 27th, 2007 - 5:34 am

Here’s to the student that published the story! Can anyone say a ‘A’? Good job and keep those hyprocrites fighting to keep your stories off the air!

ricardo maxwell   October 27th, 2007 - 6:06 am

Thanks Jeff B for pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of Mr. Hahn’s (sp?) statements on behalf of the Edwards campaign. FIrst he says location IS important and symbolic and when challenged he denies its importance. Typical liberal BS. Also typical of liberals is the attempt to stifle free speech, critical speech, and honest debate. Stalin is back! Edwards is wasting his time and that of others. He should be home with his wife and family to spend theri last days together and then return to making ooodles of cash with the firm he was “volunterring” with before he started this campaign. He should then take all that cash and hand it out to the “poor”.

william townsend   October 27th, 2007 - 6:30 am

If John Edwards staff has time to nit pick on this kind of journalism, then he has too much money, not the right team and is clueless about the real issues. His staff should be trumpeting the fact that he is the only candidate not headquartered in D.C.

Another misguided white guy – maybe he should team up with Dan Quayle!

The Pulled about the “Breck Girl” John Edwards is still here.

clkehn   October 27th, 2007 - 8:20 am

wow, that piece was total fluff – and it ruffled his staff’s feathers? Jeez, how shallow.

Jim   October 27th, 2007 - 8:29 am

Gosh, it appears little Johnny Edwards isn’t for free speech after all. It’s like the pigs in Animal Farm…..”All pigs are equal, but some pigs are more equal than others.”

Well, we know what kind of pig Johnny is along with all the others out there screaming for the fairness doctrine…….Life’s not fair, get over it!

J.W.   October 27th, 2007 - 8:33 am

It’s refreshing to see so many who recognize John Edwards for what he is – a 24 carat phony. When he had his initial press conference in New Orleans I thought I would puke. He surrounded himself with blacks (who knows if they were actually victims of Katrina or not), picked up a shovel (very briefly) and got a little dirt in it and then dumped it. Talk about contrived. That performance was worthy of an Oscar (not really). It did point out that he is as phony as a three dollar bill, but that goes for all liberal Democraps, doesn’t it?
