Oh come now! Americans settling for manual labor type jobs? Please. Don’t you know that everyone deserves to be a CEO or American Idol with only a high school diploma?

The problem is the younger generations have a complete and total “I deserve/entitlement” attitude towards everything! The last thing they want to do is get their hands dirty.
I mean not to get political but Obama talked about “spreading the wealth” so that everyone can have a shot at the American Dream. Well one HUGE part that is missing from that idea is, you gotta bust your arse to be successful. Success does not come from a hand out!
It seems so many in our country don’t want to pay their dues. They want to be able to go from point A to point C completely skipping over point B.

And I personally feel that most people look down on manual labor jobs. I mean you can find tons of jokes and stereotypes that aren’t flattering at all about manual labor jobs. In a way we have demonized manual labor jobs as being work that only low life red necks or Mexicans do.

It’s a shame. There was time when men were considered MEN if they had jobs that got their hands dirty. It was the guys in the offices with soft hands, silk socks and servants that were made fun of.

I am a retired college professor with a Ph.D. but to get there I worked as a cowhand in Oklahoma and Texas which required a lot of castration duties. I also pitched manure and hauled many thousands of bales of hay along the way. I also spent several summers during college breaks working as a construction laborer mixing cement and lugging bricks and cement blocks up ladders. I never earned a very large salary as a college professor but I always thought it was better than trying to carry bricks up a ladder as I grew older. I never regretted the hard work and more than forty years later I still have some of the muscle mass I developed in my early life doing hard physical labor.
