I am a very proud African-American, loving husband and father, devout Christian, well-respected professional and Miami University graduate. I’m very proud of my heritage and was taught to think of myself as a MAN born who was black, and not a black born who’s a man.
I respect your opinion about Glenn Beck but respectfully disagree: President Obama was the one who first brought race into the equation with his unfortunate comment about the Cambridge police officers, and I really don’t understand how you can’t see that. But then again, I’m not sure who’s agenda trumps what anymore. Though I’m certain Mr. Beck is not a racist.
I realize this post- a correspondence, if you will- may fall upon deaf ears to be put aside without regard. Despite that, I still feel compelled to express my opinion to you here- it’s something my mother and father (God bless their souls) fought for together back in the 1960’s when I was born, and I still share that passion they had then today. They told me terrible, heartfelt and inspiring accounts about our fight for equality back then, and I so wished they were alive to see Barack’s Inauguration Day. But that wasn’t in God’s plans. They would have cried tears of joy that their fight- our fight- was now a vision complete with victory! And that there is hope for our great country when men and women see clearly- and don’t just see the lies or the hate.
And that is why I write…to simply ask you sir to please open your eyes and see! Johnny Nash said it simply with music and Dr. King said it so powerfully with conviction. You see, I’m offended MY race is the one playing ‘that’ card…Dr. King would not have approved. But then again, times have changed- haven’t they? Our National Mall still awaits Dr. King’s memorial through no fault of his own. Sons and daughters should honor their parents- that is what I’m doing here. I write to tell you what I see…and to share with you things my father saw- things he spoke of that I’ll never forgot: Him a strappin’ strong sailor passin’ through Mississippi that summer of ‘64- when three young MEN died that God-awful death. No sir, we are NOT a nation of cowards!
