Craigslist Removes Adult Services Section

Craigslist has apparently closed the adult services section of its website, two weeks after 17 state attorneys general demanded it shut down the section.

About fricken time! That website is nothing but an electronic haven for the worst people on the internet no matter what branch of it you peruse. The juvenile claim that it is user moderated is a child’s cop-out to that they hope will relieve them from any responsibility to monitor who uses their website, and for what purposes.

Any website that enables child sexual abusers in even the slightest manner whatsoever should be closed down completely and the owners and managers executed.

Hmm, guess Craigs List found they were paying more in lawyer fees for this section than they were profiting.

joymc   September 5th, 2010 - 5:57 am

To some extend adult services will still be there, advertizing themselves. I think it makes sense to shut down that section. However I have tooled around on CL just out of curiosity (not looking for adult services, just snoopy) and in the section where friendships or hookups or whatever you want to call them, there appear to be a number of sketchy ads that I can only assume are for whores of some stripe. I suspect since CL is free, these sections will fill up with adult services not so cleverly toned down.

joymc   September 5th, 2010 - 7:33 am

Highly unlikely. It is not the oldest profession for no reason.

libertarian_one   September 5th, 2010 - 8:23 am

While I may not reflect the views of most of this community, I'll share what I think anyway:
Sure, prostitution is bad, and prostitutes are taken advantage of in the most horrible ways, often by the most sleazy, morally bankrupt paedophiles society has to offer, but is it the duty of a central power to regulate the act of compensated sex? How is that so very different from dating a gold digger, which, I hear is still very legal? Did any of you know that prostitution actually IS the oldest profession? If you don't believe me, look up the origin (and original purpose) of money and Sumerian high priestesses. You can't end prostitution, you can only push it under ground, where it thrives, and becomes intricately involved with other illegal businesses, and becomes even more impossible to control. It is precisely the fact that it is so heavily regulated that international trafficking circuits find a niche in it. You could, in a way, call those trafficking lowlifes personnel lawyers, human resources managers, and logistics agents, all rolled up into one morally bankrupt shell. Most of you also may not realize that prostitutes actually do make a small fortune, and that's what attracts them to the sex trade. They're not especially good at managing money, though, so it doesn't go far. I would support legalizing prostitution, and letting communities decide, each unto their own, if they want to go that direction.
You have to keep in mind that a government big enough to stamp out the world's oldest profession must wear an iron boot.

joymc   September 5th, 2010 - 10:10 am

So true with regards to government. However I would imagine only some hookers make large sums themselves. In my business I visit clients in some shady neighbor hoods. I always know when I am in a really risky area because street whores are active and visible. Not because they are a danger to me themselves but they are a sign of several things. First and foremost it means there are not enough police around and they feel safe to be out working. Secondly, a street whore is usually associated with criminals such as drug dealers, addicts etc. These women could be pulling in some money but none of them has anything of value. They live in rat hole apartments. Many end up dying badly as victims of crime. The Houston area has been known for the number of unsolved murders against young black women. Many of these have been prostitutes. Some say law enforcement would try harder to solve these crimes if the victims were white and middle class. I don't doubt this. But then white middle class families are more likely to press for answers if a member is murdered or disappears. Overall at the street level it looks pretty dangerous and unrewarding. But people make their own decisions on how they will live.

Liberty_Dude   September 5th, 2010 - 10:12 am

Agreed. The best argument against legalization is it would decrease the overall fertility of a culture, but there are two problems with this:

1. It also reduces the amount of sex crime in the same way porno does.
2. It is not the government's business to promote fertility. This is not Nazi Germany.

If you have a problem with it, use social and cultural forces to stigmatize and discourage it instead of using government as cultural enforcers for victimless crimes, similar to Sharia law. If it truly is better to avoid such vices, than individuals, families, and subcultures that avoid it will be more successful than those that do not.

Part of the reason some girls get into it is the profit margins are so high because it is illegal. As you try harder and harder to destroy it, you merely increase the profit margins as seen with the "War on Drugs". I have no doubt that anyone with any serious interest can find a prostitute very easily, craigslist or no.

Further, we need to understand that a lot of people that engage in this sort of behavior [gambling addiction, drugs, alcoholism] will simply find another way to destroy their lives. Removing one avenue for them to do so is not going to stop them.

Liberty_Dude   September 5th, 2010 - 10:16 am

Idiot. With that sort of intelligence, you couldn't succeed as an escort even if you were Brad Pitt.

joymc   September 5th, 2010 - 10:27 am

Something tells me overall fertility will take care of itself. There has to be a strong demand for prostitutes over in China what with the shortage of females. Yet the challenge there is keeping the population down.
