Just a thought, if the officer was black, would Gates have still called him a racist? And if Gates called him a racist because of his skin color, doesn’t that mean Gates is racist too?
I hope Gates gets robbed by a black guy and the police don’t arrest the robber.
Sgt. Crowley acted with in the bounds of a response to a possible crime in progress .A black officer would have done the same thing.

Officer hold your guards, resist the urge to fall prey to the politics of racism. If you fail to stand up to what you knew was right, you will go down a long road of regret. I admire professor Gates’s work, but if his actions were out of context, then he should take responsibility for his actions as opposed to playing the Race cared. Word of caution, your union should equip you guys with video or voice recording as part of your uniform. You could be telling the truth, but it is unfortunate that the law enforcement has a horrible history of race relation with many ethnicities. Believe me when I say that it is not about you; it is something more complex. At your next union meeting, demand recordings as part of the uniforms.
President Obama, you did great harm to your tenuous speech by ending it with a discussion on Dr. Gates. You were there to discuss a faltering health care policy, yet you ended with an exoneration of a friend’s action. The beginning of your speech, predictably, began the same way that all of your other speeches begin; so people tuned you out. The middle of a speech is often lost in translation and the only part left to arrest the minds of your audience was the end of the speech. You, nonetheless, isolated your audience even more with upper class elitism. You stated that you had no facts; yet, that did not prevent you from offering a critical analysis of the situation. You were not there, you had no right to offer any comments. Yes, Dr. Gates may be your friend, but there is a time and place for everything and clearly this was not the time. You lost your audience at the end. You discredited your central theme. I am reminded, however, of what Chomsky has written about you, “You do nothing unintentionally and it is what you do not say, is what matters.” I think, however, that Chomsky would have a hard time analyzing this gaffe. Remember, Mr. President, the Democratic Party is greater than you and they will let you fail before they fail. You have term limits and they are unlimited. You have modeled yourself after FDR, but I see a Jimmy Carter parody that might come a reality. Yes, history, not revision, matters when it comes to politics.

The report clearly states that both he and the cops were on the mans porch. And he was subsequently arrested for being upset and loud. It’s official that cop is stupid and probably a racist. The President was spot on. Sorry but we’re still in America where you can be upset for being harassed. That cop probably felt embarrassed for being called out and had to show force. What a coward. Boston’s violent crime rate is 2.04 higher than the national per capita rate and this guy is arresting loud mouthed old guys. Again what a coward. What’s so funny is that the cop admits that he arrested him on his porch for being loud and obnoxious. Wow, he couldn’t have been more creative than that? He knew if he took it too far like he does with the other black guys he’d loose his badge. So for the most part the officer heeded the good doctors warning. “Do you know who you’re messing with?” Does this guy remind anyone of Mark Fuhrman?
Here’s a very simple premise. If you comply with a police officer’s instructions you will not have a problem. People resist compliance because of their anger and not wanting to take responsibility for their actions. “Do you know who I am?’ These are the people who bring the trouble upon themselves while blaming everyone else for the problem that they created. They will never learn that they brought their troubles upon themselves with their inappropriate actions.

You individuals who are calling this racial profiling, the arresting officer is a minority, his last name is Figueroa. Hmmmm. I am no sociologists but does this arrest stand under the scrutiny of what has become known as racial profiling? Correct me if I am wrong, but this could be compared to Judge Sotomayor arresting, let us say, Bill Cosby. If any sociologist reads this post, do provide an answer.

I’ve got the solution – put this professor and his property on a public safety do-not-respond list. If a fire, burglary, health issue occurs where public safety personnel must get involved, then do not respond.

Wow! I cannot believe how irrational and unprofessional this officer was in this interview with the news team that TRESPASSED on his land. I was really afraid he was going to pull out a gun and pop a cap in their a$$. I was worried for the safety of the news crew! No wonder he is under such scrutiny. Given a raise and a promotion, and maybe even offered a position as an instructor at the Police Academy in an effort to turn out the kind of cops we REALLY need in this country…oh, and did I mention give him a raise?
Of course he acts calm here on this show. However the truth is, the Officer did what was expected of him. Arriving on scene with information that a possible break is occurring. He arrives, finds “someone” in the house, tells him why he is there and asks for verification.
Here is where the story falls apart. According to Gates, story he appears calm, but is agitated for some reason with the cop while he is reviewing his ID, blurts out a statement of “racism” which was uncalled for. The officer obviously wants to avoid this new confrontation, walks away to keep composure and avoid further remarks. With that, Gates follows more remarks with a calm demeanor and then gets arrested and asks WHY? and shouts more acts of RACISM – THIS according to GATES!
The Officer, doing his job trying to get answers does the above, but claims Gates, was in refusal of showing ID and apparently was protesting having too.. Gates admits starting the white comments as in the above video, but according to the Officer, he was angry, shouting and acting belligerent towards the officer for simply verifying the “person” who now stands inside a house where a call has been made of breaking and entering. Yes, Officers WILL arrest you for being stupid enough to act all kinds of foolish!
Now, ANYBODY in this situation, would gladly offer their ID to back up their story that they live in the house.
This is how this should have been handled:
Upon arrival of the officer, the officer confonts the person of interest with the “we just received a call of a possible breaking and entering” and we are investigating…
GATES: (or any sane person would reply) Oh no, officer, I live here and my door was jammed tight and I couldn’t open it. I am sure it must have looked like that. Here is my ID, I live here and own this house.
Officer would have look at the ID and confirmed as much and said, sorry to bother, we get these calls and we have to check them out. Have a nice day.
GATES or anyone sane would reply” Not a problem, I am just glad that someone cared enough to call when they see something that looks funny or out of place.
MY LAST OPINION: That the call was made strikes me funny, as we are being programmed on TV from the BRINKS/Broadview Home Secrutiy commercials that all break ins are being caused by relatively neat, but scruffy, white guys wearing hoodies and black knit caps, NOT black or hispanics or really scrungy looking, toothless, scraggly haired white guys….

Since when do lawful arrests get dropped? Since when do professional cops commit unlawful arrests? It’s a very simple analysis. Sorry I wasted my time not making it that much more clearer.

See the problem is that you’re not reading the entire story. The cop says INITIALLY the good doctor refused to show I.D. But once I.D. was shown what more did the cop need to do? Sorry, there is nothing grey about this situation. The cop was wrong and should have held himself to a higher standard but couldn’t resist taking the “uppity” black man for a ride.

and the cop says: well there was a person on the scene and he assured me he was the owner of the house and went back inside to get me his ID and I waited outside because I wasn’t invited in and as it turns out, after 15 minutes I became suspicious and walked in and found he fled out the back door and was in fact NOT the owner. Sorry about that, but at least he didn’t steal much.

What he was incarcerated for was disturbing the peace, which he did. If you, me or anyone else of any other color in the spectrum give a cop a hard time like this guy was, you can expect a ride in the back of a squad car.
Instead of being incensed, he should have been grateful that someone was looking out for his home and belongings. He was the person identified in the call, so how does this make this profiling? If Gates had laughed it off, thanked the officers for their concern, he’d have got a good nights sleep instead of a mugshot and a visit to the Chateau Hoosegow. He was and continues to be a dope.

I’ve been a cop for 25 years and been in similar situations myself, more than a few times. First, it’s hardly racial profiling. The Sgt. was acting on a call from a third party who saw two guys she did not recognize shouldering a door to a house. Then the Sgt. gets there and gets immediate attitude from the subject who refuses to show ID (belive it or not, some people lie to the cops). The guy was not arrested for breaking into his own house as the media and our President seem to imply. He was arrested for causing a disturbance. How about if he just said, here is my license officer, this is my house, thanks for checking things out? Just was we need in the White House, another Al Sharpton type who immediately faults the police and shoots his mouth off before knowing the facts.

I once locked my keys in my own car and had to break into it with a door hanger. As I was doing this I was a little worried a police officer would see me and come question me. And so, I was planning what I would say. I knew I would have to prove it was my car, obviously! Entering a citizen’s residence without a warrant, or without have been being invited in, or without an officer determining probable cause that a crime is being committed or has been committed is a violation of your rights. An idiot neighbor calling 911 does not constitute probable cause. Officer Crowley should have waited at the door for a response from the occupant. He should have made every effort to announce he was INVESTIGATING a reported break in. ANY law abiding citizen would have responded to his request. Instead, this authoritarian, thug officer decides to stomp all over an innocent citizen’s rights. He enters a domicile illegally. The Police do not have the right to simply walk into your home. Crowley arrests a citizen for apparently just yelling at him (disorderly conduct.) Yelling in you own home is not illegal. Any court would have thrown the disorderly conduct charge out because the officer had no right to be in the residence in the first place. Police officers are public servants, and apparently arrogant Crowley missed that section on his police cadet exam. He should be sent back to the police academy doghouse.

The Ofcr had every right to be in the house as he responded to a burglary in progress that a neighbor (a reputable source)reported. Is anyone blaming the neighbor for not knowing what her black neighbor(Gates) looks like??? The Ofcr has no idea who lives there but detained someone who fit the description of the Suspect (male black,backpack or luggage,etc..)Gates cane was taken from him initially as it could be used as a weapon and he was detained for further investigation until the Ofcr determined that he was in fact the homeowner. I don’t blame Gates for being upset about the incident either, but I’m sure the Ofcrs explained to him their reason for being there and the purpose for the inital detention. Why can’t reasonable people(not even other cops)understand this? All you jailhouse lawyers bantering about Constitutional Rights and needing a warrant better not quit your day jobs. All he needed was reasonable suspicion that a crime was occurring and he had enough! Gates’ created the problem himself by his mouth and his actions during and after the incident! I come from a long line of police offers in the family and know how they think and the attitude the can get. I read the police report which I am sure is a tad slanted to the view of the officers. I think both parties had issues. However, the fact remains (and is supported by the police report) that the gentleman was arrested after the officer determined that he was indeed the homeowner. The Gentleman was still on his property. The officer got the gentleman to come out of his house. Once out of his house he made the arrest for the gentleman’s conduct. A good officer would have known who to diffuse the situation. Do I condone the gentleman’s behavior, No of course not. However, given the fact that this is America and free speech is still protected and being a jerk is not a crime. The officer went too far in making the arrest. It appears to be less about race and more about the male ego and who is bigger and badder. I think they both need to apologize.
This officer deserves a medal.
