City Slashes Govt Salaries After Citizens Protest Bloated Payrolls

Under pressure from outraged residents and facing a probe by the California attorney general, the beleaguered City Council of this small blue-collar city voted Monday to slash its salaries by 90 percent.

I have the feeling that a lot of government salaries are going to get cut after November 2010,

and a lot of former democrat government employees will be seen at the Unemployment agencies.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving group.

PhoneBill   July 27th, 2010 - 5:54 am

Unfortunately, all those who resigned over this still keep their pensions. The former city manager retains his $650K+ a year pension FOR LIFE.

Maybe the people will finally wake up and realize it's not the salaries as much as it is the pensions that are killing us taxpayers.

UrinalMint   July 27th, 2010 - 12:55 pm

We, the city council have lost our jobs
Our constituents painted us as overpaid snobs
Soon we will be getting in the unemployment line
Getting more freebies until week ninety-nine
As we continue being taxpayer subsidized slobs

gwar5   July 27th, 2010 - 1:05 pm

This is most excellent news — these towns are overrun with illegals and it's the Hispanics that are rising up against these little marxist enclaves to say, enough!

They're calling it the "Fiesta de Ti" — Spanish Tea Party . This is great news and they are most welcome. Wow.

.

smellyfinger   July 27th, 2010 - 1:05 pm

They got who they voted for
so now they cry foul,

Nice work folks. Doing something about a problem instead of just bitching about it. We need more of this.

I'd like to see this applied at the federal level, these guys are truly on to something

leroitroisieme   July 27th, 2010 - 6:36 am

We need to take more over paid government employees to task. Their pay goes up, while ours stays the same or goes down in some cases to save our companies and other jobs and other jobs withing.

freedom rocks   July 27th, 2010 - 1:36 pm

You are dead on about the pensions PhoneBill, everyone needs to take a look at their own town, I can assure them they will be amazed at the pensions, right under their noses.

Buhlz_I   July 27th, 2010 - 1:38 pm

Agreed. About time the public sector shared some of the pain that the private sector has.

Wasilla_Grizzly   July 27th, 2010 - 1:39 pm

How are they going to make it now ? I thought rich fat cats were the chosen ones of the right ? NOw can we slash all rich peoples salary because YOU deem it appropriate? hypocrites.

Buhlz_I   July 27th, 2010 - 6:41 am

This might only be the tip of the iceberg. I wonder what other towns or municipalities might have the same bilge present.

Good work Bell. Go forth and be an impetus for other towns in your region.

H2K   July 27th, 2010 - 2:01 pm

As a former local government employee, I applaud this action. I know of too many people getting 90% of their salary from age 50 for life. Simple math will tell you that this is not sustainable. Years ago, the government pension managers determined that 10% per year growth should be expected. These are the same people (democrats, liberals) who demonize the financial sector and wonder why interest rates are now 1% or less.

bobbyj77   July 27th, 2010 - 2:04 pm

This is just the tip of the iceberg of taxpayer abuse by corrupt city governments across the nation. They need a new city council, and then they need to declare bankruptcy and void all those ridiculous pensions. Those thieves have stolen enough to cover their retirement.

Holdmynose   July 27th, 2010 - 2:06 pm

I read somewhere that this was mostly an immigrant town. Dems.better not take this vote for granted, they are wising up fast and don't have the slave mentality.

DontTreadOnMe   July 27th, 2010 - 2:35 pm

If you get rich when you're a "public servant", sucking up automatic pay raises and enjoying pensions that pay you 90% or 100% of your working salary after only 5 yrs on the job, it means you are a GREEDY PARASITE and PART OF THE PROBLEM.

"Rich fat cats" who make their own wealth deserve to keep their own wealth.

rockstone   July 27th, 2010 - 2:43 pm

The salary's are just the tip of the iceberg. Let's talk about the pensions. Most of which start when an employee is still in their 50's.

To realize the same benefits a taxpayer in the private sector would require a retirement account of roughly $1.5 million. You got that laying around???

I don't!
And that is just for the bureacrats. Not the police and fire depts who actually risk life and limb. And when you put it together on paper the $1.5 is pretty steep for even that.

I am sorry but this should be happening every city in every state. If the US taxpayers are the very people paying these crooks then it is time to clean house. I think this is a great story and should be used everywhere. What should a town manager make? Why not regular wages like normal people instead of stealing tax payer money.

buford12345   July 27th, 2010 - 3:04 pm

How much did the council make. Why ask more than a manager at any company. What makes you guys special?

buford12345   July 27th, 2010 - 3:05 pm

Nope that money is taken back by the time it is all over with. They should go back years and get all the cash but they wont.

doubldwn   July 27th, 2010 - 4:12 pm

They were local government workers who were being paid with TAXPAYER money – not individuals who were making a product or service for a price everyone was willing to pay. Taxes are confiscatory – buying a copy of Windows 7, an iPod, or subscribing for internet or cell service is not. You simply don't get it huh.

I can tell from your post you have most likely failed in life and have an inability to start your own business, invent a product, service or heck even come up with a brilliant website, that is why you envy those able to make a living in the private sector. You see I respect and view them as real Americans. Anyone working in the public sector who lives off taxpayer money does not carry the same level of respect. A vast percentage of ivy league grads go straight in to government positions where they receive pay for jobs that carry no competition, demand no performance yet pay higher than the private sector, early retirement, medical benefits and lavish pensions padded by cost of living increases. All for what??

doubldwn   July 27th, 2010 - 4:12 pm

By your philosophy – Steve Jobs should have his pay slashed to $300,000, Will smith and many actors should have their pay slashed from $20,000,000 per picture to $100,000, Dr. Dre should not be allowed to earn more than $200,000 per year, no Hollywood agent more than $300,000. Now I do not mean lets destroy the economy, devalue the dollar to near zero to where $300,000 becomes what $10,000,000 used to represent since that is what your progressive party has planned. If you want an end to profit, then lets see those on the hard left working in Hollywood or silicon valley take the cut first. That will be a cold day in hades. Profit is what enables them to fly private jets, attend lavish parties, vacation to the most exclusive resorts that simple peon’s like yourself who they view with disdain are unable.

jsazsmitty   July 27th, 2010 - 4:18 pm

The telling ommission from this new story…………………If these were Republicans it would have been the Banner above the fold headline all across California…………..so neat to have political cover when your a Democrat.

doubldwn   July 27th, 2010 - 4:24 pm

I have been following this story on the radio for the past week and it's rather sickening. The average pay for the citizens living in the city they were managing – $12,000 per year. A majority of the population is poor and had not a single clue what was going on nor how much these guys were paid. The last I heard, they did not know if they would be able to void the contracts for the pensions. How sick is that? A guy making 787,000 per year who is now owed a large six figure pension for working a fluff job for a city whose average resident is at the poverty level.

Too bad we no longer have muckrakers and true journalists that keep an eye on gov and all of their abuses which I guess will lead to more awakening from the populace. In this case, a private citizen who considers himself an amateur muckraker has been tracking these overpaid clowns for years. Of course the narrative from the main stream media – unless we report it – it’s not news.

Wasilla_Grizzly   July 27th, 2010 - 4:38 pm

doubldwn   July 27th, 2010 - 4:39 pm

Everyone should check out the abuse by the Los Angeles City Council and the Department of Water & Power. A few months ago the city treasury was running dry and was going to require cutbacks from union workers. What did they do? The city owned department of water & power asked the city council to vote on a temporary 33% rate increase for electric, water & waste disposal. Then it turns out the increase was permanent. After the vote, the DWP transferred $73,000,000 to the city council.

This is the new form of taxation. The local governments take over utilities and then use rate increases as a form of stealth taxation. The increases are not for infrastructure improvements, they are used 100% for the city budget – usually the union workers pay & benefits which are bleeding it dry. Some DWP receptionists (answer phones) earn over $80,000 per year which is 2x what private sector receptionists make.

And an enlightened citizenry would have never elected this regime.

midwestmomma   July 27th, 2010 - 8:05 pm

EXACTLY what I was thinking- there is a journalist at every city hall meeting in every town across our country- Do they ask questions anymore? Ours certainly don't, our local paper won't write about any "controversial" issues. What a joke. There has to be a way to void all of these crazy pensions-across the country-bankruptcy? Dissolve the city charter? How? THIS IS SOOOO WRONG! We all need to go to city hall and check out our own elected officials!

Government pay should go back to 1950 standards. Taxpayers should not have to support Pension funds. Those should be invested into by the person who owns it. The bloated, overstaffed, paper pushing, nepotism infested Government, made up of ” taxpayer paid, welfare workers”…… should be cut in HALF. Benefits should be paid into by user, only. They are parisites who will raise our taxes to feed their wealth.

This insanity of waste….spend….waste…spend needs to STOP NOW! Let’s vote for some real changes….where it matters most. GOVERNMENT WAGES. School Supervisors/ Directors should NOT be paid Four or Five times as much as a police officer who risks his life, every day for millions of people. In fact NOBODY should make that much at Taxpayer’s expense.

Get with it people, protest at the meetings, go on strike to protest, and use the voting booth. Those are OUR tax dollars they are enriching themselves with, while we head for poverty…..and another “Depression” economy.

By some reconing the state of California is in the red for just about the same amount it costs the state to pay for benefits, hospital services, prison space, housing, educations, etc for illegal aliens.

joymc   July 28th, 2010 - 3:17 am

Instead of voiding the pension contracts, they need to put these city government thieves in jail. Start local and hopefully the movement spreads to the highest levels.

OldmanRick   July 28th, 2010 - 6:11 am

I do believe a new city council could downgrade the retirement amounts. It depends on their charter, and some lawyers for the people. I dobut that the retirement fund is state sponsered.

OldmanRick   July 28th, 2010 - 6:13 am

This could be done all over the country if the people would only take action as they did in Bell..

OldmanRick   July 28th, 2010 - 6:19 am

Years ago our esteemed congress passed a law that they would be payed by the taxpayers rather than their respective state legislatures and districts. It's time to return their pay to the state legislatures for the senators and the districts for their representatives. I am convinced that things would improve rapidly, especially representation of the voter..

just received response from my city of Goodyear AZ.
The Mayor and Council last received a salary increase in July 2007 (City Ordinance 2006-1036). The Mayor receives a monthly salary of $1,916.67, the Vice Mayor receives $1,041.67 and Councilmembers are paid $766.67 per month.

The Mayor and Council are eligible to participate in the City benefit plans available to other City employees including, but not limited to health insurance, life insurance, medical flex spending accounts, and vision plans at the same contribution rates as full time employees.

Hope this information is helpful.

financial spread betting   September 5th, 2010 - 10:27 am

Financial spread betting is a leveraged tool that gives investors the opportunity to trade the financial markets without ever taking physical ownership of the underlying instrument. This means that the trader/investor can speculate in the direction of any financial instrument, whether it is specific shares, currencies, commodities or indices without ever owning them. In the financial markets there are standard contract sizes. For example for the FTSE 100 index contract the standard market size is £10. With financial spread betting the investor nominates his own stake size, for example £2 per point. The bet is settled as the difference between the purchase and the sell price.Financial Spreads is appealing to ever greater numbers of investors for several reasons, not least of which is the absence of capital gains tax on profits (unlike conventional share trading, where CGT applies to trading gains in many countries), and the lack of stamp duty on transactions (most interesting in the UK; strictly speaking, the transaction is a bet, rather than an investment – hence the name.) However, by its very nature financial spread betting is more risky than traditional, fixed odds betting, or conventional traditional share trading, where participants are usually a little more protected. If you judge wrong, you are likely to lose a great deal in the absence of a stop loss and any losses made on a spread bet cannot be offset against capital gains on ordinary investments. The costs associated with financial spread betting are included in the spread (the difference between the bid and the offer price). Therefore the wider the spread, the more you pay to trade. So when considering a company to spread bet always compare the spread. The good news about the spreads is that these are generally getting tighter due to increased competition and explosive growth as investors are beginning to realise the advantages of financial spread betting; thus making the system more efficient.

financial spread betting   September 5th, 2010 - 11:11 am

Many people think that financial sprad betting is too risky. Subconsciously, they feel that investing in shares is ethically acceptable whereas betting has down market connotations and morally reprehensible. That is a pity, because the truth is quite different. You buy a share because you believe that the price will rise and you will make a profit. You bet on a share price for exactly the same reason. The only practical difference between buying a share, and betting on the movement of the share price is that you need much more ready cash to buy the share. The costs of buying a share are much greater than placing a bet.Open a GFT Account Hello and welcome to my redesigned site on financial spread betting, which I hope you find both useful and informative, and which reflects the growing demand for informative sites about this increasingly popular way of trading in the financial markets. As I hope you will see I have tried to cover as many different aspects of this apparently simple, yet complex trading method, with examples, explanations and illustrations, as well as demystifying some of the more obscure terms which are often confusing, even to the more experienced trader. As you will see from reading the site and following my trading strategies and advice, financial spread betting, as a way of trading in the financial markets, has much to offer, but it also has many dangers and pitfalls for the unwary. I will highlight all of these for you, so that having read and absorbed all the information, you can then make your own decision on whether spread betting the financial markets is the right trading system for you.
