Child’s Crucifix Christmas Artwork Deemed ‘Violent’

WBZ: An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and came up with what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday. Chester Johnson told WBZ-TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday.

How is this school empowered to order this child to do anything outside the limits of the schoolgrounds, much less undergo a psychological evaluation?

Tepid   December 15th, 2009 - 2:42 pm

Will the teacher be evaluated for his/her physiological fitness? The teacher shows obvious signs of hostility and intolerance.

Paul   December 15th, 2009 - 3:05 pm

Of all the other children, this one is the most in touch with what Christmas is. I’m sure the rest of the drawings were an insipid mix of the Grinch, Ralphie, and Hannah Montana. This little boy will enjoy far better rewards than what’s waiting under the tree on Christmas morning. His parents should be exceptionally proud of him.

there is no fear of God in their eyes   December 15th, 2009 - 3:29 pm

Of course Paul is clueless. JESUS CHRIST is no longer on a cross, He is at the right hand of the Father, where He will be ETERNALLY!

Thank clueless catholics and their father Satan for demeaning Him as ever a child and ever on a cross.

This child’s parents should point out that we were given a WORD BOOK, and likenesses are forbidden, Exodus 20:4!

But this child’s parents are probably as clueless as Paul.

Bizzaro World   December 15th, 2009 - 3:48 pm

Oh how we have come to the other side of the coin. A kid is raised by his family to think of Jesus first over the natural commercialization impulses and he gets sent in for a psych evaluation. I’m going to guess they’ll find him out of step with most of society. He’s still strangely clinging to those things they called “values”. He should probably be locked down until he’s 18 and properly messed up, you know, for society’s sake. Annnnnd in Massachussetts, we have a school board lamenting the removal of Allah from a school play.

I agree with you Paul…reason being this child clearly goes to church regularly …how many churches have you been in that do not have the crucifix in them.. the young man put Christ with the holiday as the way he is depicted most often. The teach clearly is not bright enough to reason that out …no surprise there.

Corey   December 15th, 2009 - 3:52 pm

Yea Paul….birth…death…same thing…same holiday…no biggie…

Kevin   December 15th, 2009 - 3:56 pm

peter c   December 15th, 2009 - 3:57 pm

If this kid’s parents don’t fight this….they will be part of the continued Crucifixion of Christ the Teacher’s Unions and the Left commit everyday in our schools.

This is going way too far…It’s time we all stood up against these Godless Liberals and the G@ys in our schools indoctrinating innocent children.

I can’t believe they had the audacity and arrogance to want the kid to see a Shrink over a Cross ….What’s next…Concentration Camps for all Catholics and Christians?

Ignore their name calling and attacks on us. The Constitution says nothing about killing God…It just says there will be no State Religion and that we can all practice our religion without GOVT interference….which is just what this school and thousands like it are doing.

Here in Massachusetts…two guys can French K@ss at a bus stop with all the protections of the liberal Laws here……but a little kid can’t make a Cross?

Vote out all Dems in 2010 and their godless Messiah Obama out in 2012…Or be part of the “Evil One’s” plan by contiuing to vote in Atheist politicians who make this twistedness happen…it’s up to you!

Rexter   December 15th, 2009 - 4:00 pm

Strange that Catholicism gets singled out when they speak of 2000 year old violence – one religion practices violence against male babies called “circumcision” TODAY.

Roger B.   December 15th, 2009 - 4:04 pm

It is violent. It is the destruction of evil. Sometimes love is excruciatingly violent when it obliterated evil.

N Boldrini   December 15th, 2009 - 4:09 pm

The teacher is obviously a liberal. At least someone should tell the kid that Christmas is celebrated as the time of Christ’s birth – not death. He has it backwards. Dumb kid! He should know better. Better hold him back a grade.

PS In what way is the drawing racist???? The teacher’s attitude is RACIST and ANTI-CHRISTIAN. Sheesh!

DrEdu   December 15th, 2009 - 4:20 pm

I think the kid knows better than the Teacher:

If one recalls the Gospel, “Three Kings” (or “Three Wise Men”) brought presents to the Divine Child.
Three gifts were explicitly identified in Matthew: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Of these, myrrh (an embalming oil) was given as a symbol of Jesus’ Death.

So, the Cross was never far from Bethlehem. This kid has a very keen eye for the sacrificial meaning of the Incarnation and Birth of the Messiah.
I commend his Parents!

I taught second grade for many years and now am an art professor. The child was to draw Jesus. How did he view Jesus? He drew what he knew about Jesus, namely, that Jesus died on a cross. As for the Xs, it means Jesus’ eyes are closed. Good Grief! Leave the kid alone! His head is on straighter than his teacher’s. The teacher is over-reacting. By the way, the little guy did a fantastic job in his drawing!

demdicks   December 15th, 2009 - 5:21 pm

It’s getting harder and harder to defend “the church” when some denominations are clearly welcoming gay rights, others like the Pope are promoting the global warming hoax. Hey, I know that liberal groups like the aclu started this by kicking God out of the public schools, but why does no one ask why this was permitted by Him, why weren’t the aclu lawyers struck down in a heap of ashes when they first filed suit?. I’m tired of the free will of man argument, He knows how putrid liberals are.

chuck broyles   December 15th, 2009 - 5:48 pm

Brains have been removed from both teachers and administrators in many cases. We are so bent on crushing anything to do with religion, or Christ, or making sure that kids don’t have an aspirin with them in school we have thrown common sense out the window and what are we getting, a bunch of kids that have no idea of right and wrong, good and evil. God what a mess the Education Schools are making of our society.

Bill Smith   December 15th, 2009 - 5:54 pm

It is clear that we have not just one foolish, possibly even stupid teacher, but several seriously misguided, ignorant fools at that school.

There are crucifixes all over the state of Massachusetts where little kids can see them. They are a representation of an event that happened 2,000 years ago. Yet this teacher somehow sees a PRESENT threat from a little boy. Has it not occurred to anyone that this imagined threat was a product of HER mind, not the little boy’s? That it’s her thought process, not his we ought to be worried about?

If this little guy had just recently seen the Liberty Bell, and then drawn a picture of a bell with a crack in it, would this silly fool have deemed THAT a threat of vandalism?

These folks have got some serious ’splainin’ to do.

It probably took the three Magi awhile to get to the city of Christ’s birth. He would have been a few years old by then. They probably had a pretty large caravan and woke the city. The Magi followed the star and found a Jew, which makes it even more amazing as the Magi were not Jews. They knew Christ was a person of importance which is more than liberals know.

MagicMan   December 15th, 2009 - 7:03 pm

I’m certain the kid would not have gotten into trouble with the teacher had he drawn the Crucifix in a jar of someone’s smelly yellow liquid.

Chuck   December 15th, 2009 - 7:22 pm

Christmas has no meaning without Easter. The young fellow’s theology was Scriptual and right-on point. Someone has been teaching him well!

ej   December 15th, 2009 - 7:26 pm

There is no fear of God in their eyes should take a xanax and settle down. The kid drew a picture. To flip out about Catholic fixation with Christ on the cross sounds nutty. Being able to quote the written scripture doesn’t save you. Being ugly and calling people clueless is pointless. The child seems to have some understanding of Christ’s existence. That’s good. So why don’t you focus on your own cruddy little life. You sound like you’ve been victimized at some point. Sad.

First, the family needs to sue the school for emotional distress. Seriously. They can use the money for college expenses, or donate it to a worthy cause. The school was WAY out of line here.

Secondly, this drawing would make a GREAT Christmas card, especially if accompanied by a brief tastefully-written explanation on the back as to the origin.

I wonder if that is Obama’s problem, he stammers a lot, I wonder if he is trying to defend the undefendable?

Joseph G   December 15th, 2009 - 9:02 pm

Isn’t it interesting that a liberal will fight tooth and nail for your rights as a wetback, welfare recepient, gay, etc… but not for the things written into the constitution such as religion, speech, right to bare arms….. I guarantee you, if the kid were a muslim and drew a non-believer getting their head cut off, the brainless left wouldn’t make a peep.

J.   December 15th, 2009 - 9:12 pm

The persecution this kid is put through is atrocious. The U. S. Constitution guarantees that the government will not adopt any one religion and will, indeed, afford all citizens religious freedom. This kid and his family and the rest of us are NOT religiously free, if the school is supported in this HORRIBLE reaction to a child’s drawing.

Secularism in-breed into our children or death to all conservatives…..The lefties have their God though….AlGore and HIS great environmental scam……Like the liberals say, you cant prove there’s a God so I guess global man made warming does’nt need to be proven either……
If the young boy would have made a picture of the earth with everyone holding hands and singing that would have been seen as masterful and so PC, God forbid (excuse me) that the boy suggest Christmas is about Jesus…..just a thought!

Johnaldo Giovanni   December 15th, 2009 - 10:27 pm

Here’s what I think should happen when these events take place:

We should all flood the school with thousands of pictures of the Crucifixion, the birth of Jesus, His resurrection etc.
Show these fools what we know to be true and how we won’t stand for this nonsense anymore.

If a public school teacher indeed asked students to make “Christmas drawings,” then we must consider that the teacher violated Constitutional ‘establishment of religion’ protections. Regardless of the assignment, is not the student’s drawing constitutionally protected as ‘free exercise’ or ‘free speech?’

Bill   December 16th, 2009 - 12:40 am

The school and teacher were completely crazy here, but will you folks read the article more carefully? It’s not the teacher who says there’s racism involved. It’s the child’s parent, who suspects the teacher has racist motives for singling out his black child.

Mike   December 16th, 2009 - 1:17 am

Re: there is no fear of God in their eyes – “likenesses are forbidden” and are perpetuated by Satan-led catholics? You obviously haven’t been in a catholic church for a while, if ever. It’s tough to find a true crucifix. What you are more likely to find is a cross with a “Risen Christ” floating in front of it. But to the point, the reference to likenesses, graven images, idols, et al is not that it’s a sin to make a religious image, but it is sinful to make one with the intent to worship that image. Idols of animals and other objects of false worship we made under the auspices of Moses himself. God just made it clear to Moses that worshipping false gods was not acceptable.

[...] The teacher apparently became upset because he or she felt the image was violent, being especially disturbed by the child’s drawing Xs where Jesus’ eyes would be (a common way of representing closed eyes.) The teacher claims the boy said he had drawn himself on the cross. You can judge for yourself how alarming and violent the image is here. [...]

Martha   March 22nd, 2010 - 1:42 pm

..is christmas NOT about JESUS ….The SAVIOR who was BORN only to be KILLED for OUR SINS… Was Christ NOT crucified? Crucifiction IS violent. Do the gifts of the wisemen NOT foreshadow HIS PROPHETIC DEATH? ….
Gold was a gift that was typically designated for a king or for royalty.
Frankincense was burned as incense in the temple by the priests who served as mediators between God and the people.
Myrrh was originally used as an anointing oil for kings and for prophets, but was also symbolic of DEATH ….Bottom line i believe the drawing is JESUS and JESUS is Christmas so the child did what he was told.
God Bless!
