As a former Army Officer, I believe in the Geneva Convention and believe that ANY torture of the enemy is wrong and should be treated as an international crime. The soldier’s way is not the coward’s way. Regardless of the savagery of war, a soldier cannot use war as an excuse to murder. If you meet the enemy you must kill him on the field or you must spare him. Any revenge or punishment doled by the combatants after the battle is amoral. I have seen men, and friends, die at the hands of the “enemy” fighting for the honorable part of America. Torture and murder is not that part. If Dick and our DOD think it is, then perhaps it is time America gets help managing our military humanly. Weren’t there many a German and Japanese soldier summarily executed at the muzzle of an American rifle during WWII? Was the leadership of Roosevelt, Eisenhower, MacArthur lacking? The birthers are being led by a red herring on this – an look at one of the loonies doing it – an Isr4eli “lawyer” filing false documents and wearing Tammy Faye Baker makup. The thing is, they will forge a birth certificate if pressed. HOWEVER, if Obama traveled on an Indonesian passport and/or accepted a scholarship only for foreigners (Fulbright)….well, then he is nicked!

What is worse then the torture he encouraged is the corporate smorgasbord he initiated in Iraq. Regardless of whether we should have went (the fact is the administration lied about WMD’s and wanted to go to Iraq as soon as they were put in office) he wreaked havoc by giving Blackwater, Haliburton, KBR, Beckel, Flour and other defense contractors a blank check and let them rape the Iraqi people. Haliburton (by the way, how come he got a multi-million dollar golden parachute when he became VP? And how come Haliburton won so many no-bid contracts) killed U.S. soldiers by installing faulty electrical wiring in showers. And also, the Secretary of the Army was a former Enron exec. The Bush administration is the most corrupt regime in U.S. history, and Cheney won’t make any apologies for the damage he has done.
Every step of the way the Bush administration sought legal advice as to what they could and couldn’t do. No doubt some went over the line. But, they kept America safe. Actually anyone who believes that once torture becomes ‘accepted and commonplace’ in our military that it won’t spread to our law enforcement (who are now receiving military training) and thence to our jails (already happening) and to us is very, very deluded.

Our government would justifiably feel and believe that if it is okay to torture (deny human rights) to anyone, it could justify denying human rights to everyone who got in the way of ‘our’ government. That could translate to a lot of people in this country…depending on what party is in power at any given time. Better be careful you aren’t taking away your own rights when you start taking rights from others – no matter who they are. The law is the law and if you allow the law to torture, the law will be able to torture you.
Our US Troops are Water Boarded Every Day as a Training Exercise. How does that Make Water Boarding Torture??. Every Special Force Soldier, US Navy Seal, EOD, Rescue Swimmer and Anyone else has to attend a Survival School which has them Water Boarded to graduate. Funny how we Water Board our Own Troops, it O.K., but if we Water Board a Terrorist err…, Enemy Combatant err…, oh yeah, Innocent Goat Herder it is considered Torture.
No, our troops are not waterboarded everyday. Some of our troops are waterboarded once (maybe twice) to get the experience of what it may be like.
