If CO2 was the drastic problem that these people claim they would be teleconferencing not globe trotting around the world spewing out tons of CO2 on private jet and limousines. If it were not for capitalism we would not have many of the technologies, medical advances etc… thatï»ż we have today. If everyone shares equally what is the incentive to work hard and excel. P1nc, capitalism does not promote monopolies, socialism does – particularly a government monopoly. One of the main tenets of capitalism is equal opportunity, so as long as someone is not hindered from making a better product (i.e. not the “same” product) then a company can get as big as it wants — thereby providing goods and services, as well as employment to thousands. Why penalize success? If you don’t like how large a company is, then don’t buy their product. How is that unfair? Is it because the CEO’s pay themselves more money? Who cares? It’s their company. I do agree, however, that one company should not be allowed to own ALL the natural resources in a particular area (e.g. water) if it means denying “free” access to a basic necessity of survival. The government at this point is necessary to fulfill it’s most basic obligation – to protect innocent lives. For this reason there are private lakes (fishing) and private property (hunting), private wells (water) etc. along with public lands which are set aside and cared for through taxes (this is not antithetical to capitalism). As for the stereotype that capitalist companies exploit the poor in other countries by paying them less… well, they are free to work somewhere else, and obviously their own country is not creating an atmosphere conducive to business development and competition, the very thing that leads to higher wages. If I were in a poor country I would rather get paid a dollar and feed my family, than get nothing at all. So capitalism is the best friend of the poor all over the world, and socialism is what saps the incentive of individuals and companies from being productive and making money (in turn spending, and investing that money – which necessarily helps others).
The term that describes America’s economic system perfectly is Corporate Socialism: “the privatization of profit and the socialization of risks and misconduct” Lately corporations have gotten even more than their usual take of the public’s money with these bailouts. Corporate Socialism controls our political system as well.
No matter what the taxpayers vote for, only the transnational corporations seem to get their own way and be able to influence America’s policies. We the people pay the taxes, and the transnationals rule us and dictate the way that things will be.
In turn, what do we get for keeping our mouths shut and paying taxes? We get an economy that has been outsourced to further the profits of the transnationals: companies that often use every trick in the book to hide their profits out of reach of American taxation, eroding our tax base here in the U.S. even more Regardless of what you thought of government healthcare, the only opinion that made a difference was that of the insurance companies.
We are told America is fighting for freedom and democracy only because it sounds better than saying America is fighting for oil companies and the enrichment of the defense industry. Now, perhaps if this transnational imperialism actually benefited the people that paid the taxes, it might be different, perhaps even worth debating the trade-off in the lives of strangers vs. personal profit. But quite frankly, my life and the lives of anyone I know will not be improved one iota simply because Unocal gets to build a pipeline to the Caspian Sea Oil Basin.
If the power of our ideas is so strong in the United States, why do we need assassins murdering foreign leaders elected by their own people.
Freedom is not a bullet to the back of the head. Democracy is not clandestine operation by (Blackwater) Xe and a hundred dead civilians in a Pakistani marketplace.

You want freedom, you want democracy but you don’t want capitalism. Anything less than pure capitalism
is a form of socialism. With socialism, you loose your freedom and democracy, so there is a disconnect between
what you are proposing and what is possible.
Capitalism:
Develop a product, employ people to make it, sell it to people who want it, pay your employees, use the profits as you wish (personal welfare, charity, invest in your business, etc.), pay low taxes for “public” services (roads), not individual services (doctor’s bills).
Socialism:
Government develops a program, employs people to run it, by threat of penalties and/or jail you and your employer pay excessive taxes and give up property and liberties (as much as the government can take) for the program… when all else fails prints and circulates more money to cover program’s cost.
Remember how Obama and Chavez greeted each other like Old Friends. He gave Obama an Anti-American Book and Obama was really grateful for the gift. I’m pretty sure that both Hillary and Obama are agreeing with him. Even though Capitalism is the reason that Obama and Hillary have as much money as they do. I guess it’s OK for Marxist Progressives to have money thanks to Capitalism, but it should only apply to them and no one else.

should “never interfere” with free enterprise as long as business activities are legal.
Corporations are not evil, as socialists would want you to believe. Corporations are businesses
and absolutely do not need to be “controlled” by any government. Governments basically set standards and collect taxes.
If businesses are successful, it is for a good reason and to our benefit. Markets dictate all kinds of things
including what wages are necessary to pay employees, in today’s markets unions are a kind of antique. (that is why SEIU had
better luck hitting up government employees with unions rather than business employees. The government is practically
a bottomless trough, it tends to be a huge source of easy revenue).
Anyway, if you don’t like a business or do like a business, vote with your wallet, it is that simple.
If the business is profitable with you as a customer it will succeed, if is not profitable it will and should fail.
GM really should have reorganized in bankruptcy but the government artificially saved the company, most likely a temporary fix.
You can also vote by buying companie’s stock, like an oil company. If you think that profits might be high a certain year,
you can participate in that profit by owning their stock. Most oil companies are corporations, oil companies are not evil, oil companies don’t make huge profits every year but when they do make a profit, most of that money goes right back into finding more energy resources and creating jobs.
So, your thought of “breaking” any productive corporation that is a legal entity really doesn’t make much sense. Nothing is gained
by doing that unless you are saying that executives are overpaid,in which case that is none of our concern unless we are stock holders
with a say and vote in company matters.

This isn’t really such a novel idea. Standard oil was broken up a hundred years ago.

I don’t think corporations are inherently evil. I think that corporations have too much power over our government. It’s that old saw about “absolute power corrupting absolutely.”

Corporate lobbyists have the laws changed that don’t favor them. If politicians try to take a stand they are drummed out. When businesses have monopolies, this hurts free enterprise.

Remember a year ago when everyone was saying: “Drill, baby, drill.” It came out that the problem wasn’t that there wasn’t enough oil to drill. It turned out that there weren’t enough refineries operating. Now why was that? It was discovered in congressional sub-committee meetings that the reason was because the oil companies had shut the refineries down intentionally in order to keep the supply down and the prices up.
I don’t have to remind you what happened with Enron. I’m thinking that there are a few people that had money invested in that company that now in retrospect wish there had been a bit more regulation.
What about KBR that received millions in bonuses when American soldiers were electrocuted and killed? Please explain to me how no-bid contracts promote free enterprise, because I’m not totally clear on that.

However, when speaking of companies not exploiting people, you are wrong. They pay NON democratic governments in other countries to exploit there people. You would probably reply to this, the people should revolt. Trust me they try, however when working with guns against tanks, it becomes a problem.
Again I dont denounce capitalism, however it should be backed by democracy. And when companies exploit other people for there recources, cheap choclate beans, coffee, bananas, gold, countless examples, it should simply not be condoned. It does not give companies a fair way to compete, especially when companies decide what your government does, and should vote.
You say we have a choice, I most fully agree, and one should never think people are not responsible for their actions, however the government shouldnt either, and companies neither. To get attention for something in this day of age, it requires money (advertising). By lawless being able to compete in a capitalistic state, a medicine company could easily spread a desease it has the patent to cure, in order to make shitloads of money, and you say people have a choice. What? Live or Die?
Without laws for and by the people (democracy), a capitalistic system is just another way of oppression as explained before.
But you make a good point, and if companies fullfill such a task, ofcourse there are going to be differences in saleries. I never apposed to this. But the exploitation of people I do oppose. The solution cant simply be to let the people chose what they want to buy. People simply dont have enough recources to find out how each company makes it product. So there must be restricting laws to some extent that benefits free trade and free enterprise for the benefit of humanity. The best system I know to do such is a democracy, and I personally favor there to be many parties.
And once again, there is more choice then simply Socialism and Capitalism. I never favored Socialism. I favor Capitalism, however if capitalism is not managed by Democracy, its just another flawed form of Aristocracy, which has always been the case in Socialism shown throughout history. The few rule the many.
So please understand Im not attacking capitalism in favor of socialism. Im trying to explain that capitalism in itself is not the solution, it needs governence by Democracy, and currently we dont have democracy. We are only led to believe this. In the Netherlands where i live we voted NO to european constitution, our government think they know better and said YES.
Its the same in most countries. Im sure most Americans dont like the fact that bankers are being sold out by the government just to be able to pay for there big bonusses.
But understand that most banks would have never gone bankrupt if they didnt know the government was going to safe them. They OWN the government. Thats all made possible coz democracy failed.
