As I understand it, they voted on these fish ladder bonds and the voters said YES. The funding can only be used for this purpose and the voters said YES, the last thing I would want to see is for the government to decide that the vote doesn’t matter and use the bond money for another government selected project instead.

Our fishing license fees already pay for protection of fisheries that are neglected, such as the West and East forks of the San Gabriel river system. This fishery contains a dwindling number of native trout that need to be protected, yet has been left to become polluted by the local residents. It used to be a beautiful habitat. How about working to save what we already have before it’s too late? Why wait another 35 years and spend millions to restore it when we can do it NOW? Conservation. CON-SER-VA-TION. What a concept, eh?
When it comes to fish, money is no object. It doesn’t matter if it works or not. One million dollars is nothing. We are talking about a $78.5 million dollar budget for Asian carp control in Illinois. They have spent millions of dollars trying to kill the Asian carp. In the most recent attempt, 100,000 pounds of fish were killed by way of poison, none of them carp. I’m surprised PETA hasn’t said anything about the discrimination against Asian Carp, and the accidental mass murder of the other fish. We’re messing with evolution here.

I’m a fisherman, and I’m sympathetic to efforts to preserving aquatic wildlife, but California is in a financial toilet. Now is not the time for hippie feel good “build it and they will come” projects.

The whole CA budget is plagued by crap like this, which is why the state finances are in a constant shambles. The inmates have been running the asylum for far too long.
Did anyone think about what restoring a natural spawning run could do to the local economy? Recreational fishing licenses, bait shops, hotels, gas stations, restaurants all benefit from improving / restoring a natural fish run. The same thing is being done on the Cape Fear River in NC for striped bass & shad runs. Returning these runs helps the fish populations rebound and thrive and is a win-win for both local businesses in the eco-tourism and recreational fishing industry and related businesses. I’m not talking enviro-nazi, Al Gore types, but rather everyday people making a living off of tourism.
I watched a TV news presentation about the fish ladder. The proponents used the term “endangered” frequently when describing steelhead trout that have been blocked from migrating into a tiny creek by a huge concrete culvert shelf. Steelhead are sea run rainbow trout that go to the ocean and return to their birth place to spawn multiple times during their lifespan. The range of steelhead is from Alaska to California. the fish are plentiful throughout their range.
Endangered is a code word used to justify absurdly ridiculous and wasteful projects like the fish ladder in question.
Deaf and blind idiots in Sacramento have turned my once-great state into a cesspool of political privilege and special interest group excess. Before people jump all over this, it might be nice if someone bothered to calculate what the ROI will be – sport fishing is a huge industry. I’m not saying that this is necessarily a good idea, I’m just saying that this information is important to consider when evaluating this project.
Something strikes me a bit odd with this. I don’t remember having voted for this ridiculous thing. Of course there seems to be no shortage here in California of people voting to spend someone else’s money.
Worse yet, we now have people of one group successfully voting to tax a people of another group. How this is Constitutional in California is a good question. No one in a position of actually being able to carry the water for this question seems to want to do so. I would call this both taxation without representation as well as Democracy in action. Given that we are supposed to be a Constitutional Republic, both at the State level as well as the federal level, this is a prime example of the mob rule that the founders warned us about in Federalist Papers # 10 and elsewhere in their writings.
Democracy, mob rule, does not include rights as a barrier against oppression of the mob. When you allow direct vote without rights standing an equal ground by way of access and finance you invite the mob to do as they will until it is too late. California is the example of this in action. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
We absolutely should not bail out California. Let them go bankrupt. I am so sick and tired of working hard my entire life, to have to take care of all the lazy and stupid people.
I am a conservative California Republican and I support this project. First of all, it will create (at least temporarily) some jobs. But it also has long-term benefits. If steelhead are successfully reintroduced in Malibu it will create a fishing industry, promote tourism and reap far more than $1 million in benefits. This makes FAR more sense than throwing away billions of dollars on ineffective social programs and a bullet train along Interstate 5. This kind of project is EXACTLY what our government ought to be doing–building infrastructure, preserving our environment and promoting industry.

Recreational fishermen – primarily FLY fishermen – do nothing to hurt this or any other species of trout because they must by law use non-barbed hooks and use catch & release. If the steelhead is truly endangered (the lefties favorite program to stop anything they don’t like) then perhaps you ought to look at all the fancy high dollar restaurants and their hoity-toity clientele who demand exotic items on their overpriced menus. A fish ladder isn’t a bad idea. But a fish elevator would be far more convenient for the Sea-Run Rainbow Trout / Steel Head Trout returning from the Pacific Ocean especially when they could have their fins full of gifts and digital photos of their extended sea-cruise vacations. Think about it for a second – they wouldn’t get tired jumping the 18″ ladder stairs.

California has become the land of morons (as represebted by the “Clueless in Hollywood” crowd), in-breds (as represented by adeptly “Save the Spotted-Owl because they can’t f–k while being distracted by the noise that chopping trees), and lemmings (represented by un-thinking but passionate/concerned cretins who willing to follow the next rodent in front over the cliff to a collective death).
