The racially motivated President owes this officer an apology on NATIONAL TV where he made these disparing comments about the CPD and Officer Crowley.
I agree with you 100%. Both during the incident, and especially after the fact, Gates was trying to trigger an incident. He was baiting the cop to do exactly what he did, and has proven himself a clown.
On the other side, however, Mass General Law states that an officer MUST provide identification upon request. The officer failed to do so, and found himself in violation of the law. The law must always be bi-directional, it needs to keep the people safe from each other, and from the government.
Gates should be laughed at, as is happening nationally now.
The cop needs to be disciplined, and reminded that he is not empowered to decide which laws he adheres to (particularly the ones which regulate his behavior and not the public’s).

I believe both the POTUS and Professor Gates should apologize to the Officer. This President is causing racial problems in the US. After listening to the 911 call, the caller was beyond polite and nice and appeared the 911 Officer had an attitude. I imagine when everything else is released it will be a hinder to the POTUS.
Obama & Gates owe the “whitey” (as Gates has called ‘white’ people) police officer an apology – they also owe all law enforcement officers an apology for accusing them of racism when they are the ones with the foul attitude.

I think if you read that law that an officer must provide identification it does not say he has to do it in any specific time. I am sure he provided it on the arrest report. A criminal or suspected criminal can not demand a cop stop doing what he is doing and pull out his wallet.

I don’t believe the police officer responding to a potential crime scene, with nerves a bit heightened but steady just the same, deserved a livid racial berating because he wasn’t black. How about “guilty of investigating a potential crime scene while being white” ? I’d like to see the media cover that angle. Asking for verification is a necessary part of completing an investigation. You can’t take a person’s word for it because it isn’t verification for the documentation. So it’s procedure just like scanning an 80 year old white lady at the airport.
When Gates followed Sgt Crowley out of the house continuing his hate-filled tirade, he was pushing his conduct. Sgt. Crowley who has taught racial sensitivity courses to police officers,probably would have had less reservation arresting a white person. Cuffs are also procedure in an arrest, and the cuffs in front were showing deference.

TecumsehSherman, the news reports seem to indicate that Sergeant Crowley identified himself the first and second times Professor Gates demanded that he do so, but became “surprised and confused” after the demand was shouted for the third time. The reports I’ve read do not say that Crowley refused to identify himself even at that point, but it seems likely Prof. Gates was belligerent and not listening.
This is a perfect example of why people don’t get involved when they see something that is possibly wrong. The neighbor was only trying to be helpful and is now being portrayed as a racist. So sad that Mr. Gates was so angry and hateful instead of being grateful someone was trying to protect his home. Kudos to the police who have an impossible job.

Sadly, this incident has most definately set race relations back at least two decades — and that is because African-American pontificators quickly embraced an outdated, 1960’s-style whining mentality which incorrectly concluded that a “white” complainant (and according to the Boston Herald, the complainant is not white, but is Portuguese and of darker olive skin) had complained only because of race.
We now know that this was a citizen making a sincere, honest report to the police; we know the police responded expediently; and we know that Professor Gates acted like a pompous jerk in response to a police sergeant merely asking routine questions that would be asked of any of us.
How can a police officer “profile” when he or she is dispatched to a location? The real problem, as demonstrated by Gates, is that even purportedly professional African-Americans have great difficulty simply co-existing in a diverse world. The only teaching moment is one in which Gates is the student.
Obama was right, as president he should have calibrated his remarks.
But it WAS stupid to arrest Gates for disorderly conduct.
In several cases, the courts in Massachusetts have considered whether a person is guilty of disorderly conduct for verbally abusing a police officer. In Commonwealth v. Lopiano, a 2004 decision, an appeals court held it was not disorderly conduct for a person who angrily yelled at an officer that his civil rights were being violated. In Commonwealth v. Mallahan, a decision rendered last year, an appeals court held that a person who launched into an angry, profanity-laced tirade against a police officer in front of spectators could not be convicted of disorderly conduct.
That’s way I hate that Obama waded into this situation.Gates will more than likely let it go instead of suing, out of deference to Obama.
So Massachusetts law clearly provides that Gates did not commit disorderly conduct.
The Cambridge Police should be training their officers to know the difference between legal and illegal conduct. What Gates did was probably not so smart — in general, be nice to people carrying guns — but it wasn’t disorderly conduct. At least not in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
That explains why the charges against Gates were dropped. It wasn’t because the police were trying to defuse the situation. It was because Gates had done nothing illegal.
On the 911 tape just released,Gates was not heard ranting on the tape as was reported.

I think the combination of Whalen’s statement that she never extended the individuals were black and that Sgt. Crowley falsified a police report shutter this case down to police misconduct which warrants a firing. Crowley violated a citizens rights, regardless of his skin color, and utilized despicable tactics to cover his trail. It is clear Crowley understood the statute of disorderly conduct and that he had to legally take the tongue lashing from Gates while in his home. By requesting backup after determining Gates was the resident means he had made the decision to arrest Gates at that juncture while inside his house despite evidence that Gates was the owner. He then baited Gates out of the house in order to make an arrest that could be reviewed as lawful, as any arrest in the home would have been unlawful and he could be fired for such misconduct. Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with race and got mixed up with racial bias because of Crowley’s actions to cover his track on his abuse of power by falsely noting in his police report that he was seeking 2 black males when he was seeking 2 large bodied males, of which Gates didn’t fit the description. Hopefully, his firing will come shortly.

Defending President Half-Cocked can’t be fun.
Two possibilities:
First, that Obama really didn’t know the facts before he took sides and commented on national TV, in which case, it shows that he makes judgements without considering the FACTS — a very disturbing trait for anyone especially for someone who holds a lot of power.
Second, that Obama was well aware of the facts but went ahead and impugned the character and reputation of a police officer who was only doing his job. THIS IS A VERY SCARY trait for someone holding the highest office of the land. It was morally reprehensible to play the race card and falsely brand someone a racist when Obama knew full well that it wasn’t about race at all. This could have ruined the cop’s life and that would have been fine with Obama. Thank God, there were witnesses and recordings.
Either way, this whole incident shows what kind of a man is now occupying the highest office of the land. To those of you who adore the man, please open your eyes and look a little deeper (into the “content of his character”).
In the police report, Crowley says Whalen told him she saw “two black males with backpacks on the porch.” People who have come to the defense of the veteran cop have noted that Crowley did not presume the “suspect” was black, but rather was told so.
Reached yesterday evening by phone, Crowley said, “Obviously, I stand behind everything that’s in the police report. It wouldn’t be in there if it wasn’t true.”

The only one who was confrontational and racist was Gates, from the moment the officer spoke

US News and World report is reporting that Harvard University has slipped from number 1 ranking to 127 behind Arizona State.
What’s missing from this audio? Gates is supposedly yelling so loud as to cause a scene yet he is not

I blogged about this last Friday. The main purpose of my blog was to say that you have every right to mouth off to a copy in your own home, but it just might not be a good idea. When you pick a fight with cops, then you get one basically.

He diffused an immanant threat!
The primary factor in police interactions is power. The police have 100% of the power and the individual has none. This places the burden on the police to act deferentially when they’ve determined no crime has been committed. The individual can cuss and curse and yell – the police should stand down. Especially in the man’s home. The police have entirely too much power and this incident proves it.
Regarding race, I’m white and I would have been more salty than the professor, should a policeman not act deferential after intruding in my house. Was the officer acting out of racial bias? Only he can say, but racially motivated or not, he was 100% wrong. 100% of the power and the situation goes improperly to the police station means he was 100% wrong.
The professor and many black commentators assert racial bias in police interactions. I disagree. The problem is that the police have too much power against all races. Mr. black-man thinks he has it rough with police? Well, welcome to the club. The issue isn’t race, it’s that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The police need enough power to stop crime and no more. One iota of power beyond the crime-stopping mission will lead to all of our enslavement. White, black or brown. This officer used his power way beyond crime-stopping.
It is important for the country to expose Obama and Gates to the light of day. Their racism is not limited to just this event. Will Obama and Gates learn anything from this teaching moment?
If a black police officer had come to Gates’ door, surely he would not have been as uncooperative and the situation would have diffused. After reading the comments here I do not want to move on. I want the cop to explain how he heard about “two black men” breaking in when that was never said! I can see why the witness wanted it released. I want him to explain how he said he talked to the woman who filed the report when she says he did not! I want to hear the tape of the WHOLE incident from start to finish so I can get the tone and attitude of the officer loud and clear, not the snippets we have been presented. I want to hear why a guy who was trying to call THE CHIEF OF POLICE was arrested. I also want the people who said Gates FOLLOWED the officer to the front porch explain how the officer said he WOULD NOT come out to the porch. I want to know why he was asked to come out because of A PUBLIC DISTURBANCE when the original disturbance was INSIDE THE HOUSE! The more I read the more I am convinced that Gates was not upset toward police officers, but was upset with THAT officer. I want to know why you are arresting a guy who had to get a cane and get his handcuffs in front of him when you already know he committed no crime. I WANTED this to end peacefully with both sides having dignity and a “teachable” moment, but now I guess they will have to charge poor Sgt. I’m confuesd. Why did Sgt. Crowley say in his police report that the suspects were two black males but the neighbor who called 911 never mentioned race?

Takeaways from all this discussion are that reporting such events CAN be done without citing race. If a person is breaking into a house and you report it fast enough… and the police arrive fast enough, they will find said person inside the house. It is accepted formality to request ID and during that formality, it is not acceptable to make the duties of an officer of the law difficult to carry out.
Kudos to the person who reported the incident the way they did. (No assumptions were made – a true, impartial neighbor) I’m reminded of a time in the mid 60’s when the first black family moved into our sprouting neighborhood on L.I., NY. I learned a lot about racism then. My dad was a Rebublican committeeman and knew just about everyone in his district. Our family was the only one to welcome and extend the hand of friendship to those folks. Our families became very dear friends and remained that way. It didn’t matter that they were well spoken individuals who were obviously well educated. The rest of the neighbors (mostly Democrats) only began to accept them when they learned that both were MD’s. What a shame.
I am very proud that our nation has proven it can elect a president who is not white. But I do wish that our President was Colin Powell, who I am very aware backed Barak Obama during his race against Clinton and McCain. It doesn’t matter… I just wish it was Colin. Of course, I am very much republican. I hope those Democrats who read this have a very clear understanding that there are many more of us white Republicans who have similar unbiased backgrounds – and we are not happy with the behavior of our president. Don’t think that you are unique in your ideals and aspirations for racial equality in out great country.
Oh, and I work in Cambridge, Ma. and have needed the services of the Cambridge Police. They didn’t treat me special because I was white and I too had to present my ID, even though the car I was driving clearly belonged to me and I reported the break-in. It’s 2009; Expect to present ID and cooperate with law enforcement.

I voted for McCain, but was not unhappy when Obama was elected because I foolishly thought that the racism was nearing the end so something good would come out of the next four years. Now I see that it is merely shifting from one group to another. I stand accused of being a racist by my Hispanic neighbors (they do not LOOK Hispanic, but apparently they are) because I do not want to hear their music 24/7. Condoning any type of racial profiling is “stupid”. Profiling a police officer based on skin color is exactly what the officer is being accused.
It is not racially motivated when a police officer arrives at your home to protect your belongings without knowing (or probably caring about) the color of your skin. The officers were there to protect the home, and ascertaining the identity of the person inside is part of that. I would be overjoyed if an officer responded to a call about my home. At least they care enough about their jobs to do that.
I don’t hate police. I simply do nothing that would warrant them looking at me twice. I would never yell at a police officer. They have big guns and tasers. Then again, I don’t feed stray dogs for close to same reason — they have big teeth.

Remove the fact that the cop is white and the Prof is black and look at the situation again. In any situation, if a police officer tells you to do something, just do it. If the cop does something wrong then sue his ass, but be smart, don’t poke the cops with a stick. You are just asking for it.
Put yourself in a cops position, every single call/traffic stop/encounter with the public could result in the officers death. When they come to a scene they secure it first, then sort out the facts. So I get it that cops sometimes overreact when somoene does not comply, they are trying to secure the scene. And I know its a pain in the b u t t to be hassled by the police when you haven’t done anything wrong, but in most instances they are acting in the interest of public security. Most cops have a good nature but some don’t. Just like some professors have a good nature and some don’t.
The situation could have been avoided if the professor just complied.
The dispatch tape has been released. No where on the tape do you hear anyone yelling or screaming. The officer said repeatedly that Gates kept yelling at him, but you don’t hear it on the tape. Why?

I covered police beats some time ago: local, county and state cops. Heard a lot of stories from them about how people would just not shut up and actually dare the cops to arrest them. Without fail, the cops all said the next thing they did was to pull out the handcuffs and make an arrest.

Read the police report. The police officer did nothing wrong. He was not asked for his identification. He was uniformed, but driving an unmarked car. Gates had to take him outside for officer safety – it’s the first rule you learn in the academy. The suspect always knows the home and where weapons are hidden. What’s more, there were two suspects and the copy only saw one – the other one could have been a threat. Finally, estranged husbands with I.D.’s showing their previous address return home and kill their ex-wives all the time. The police did precisely the right thing and the only racists here are Gates and Obama – the latter for simply assuming the white officer or the white witness was motivated by race.
Amazing how it WAS a story when it was the white unjustly racially profiling the innocent person in his own home. I seem to remember lawyers were gonna be hired, lawsuits were gonna happen, people were going to lose their jobs. “What’s That? You have everything on Audio?” Now “everything was blown out of proportion” and “I just want to use this to as a chance to move forward” and “why are you trying to make this into a story?” Amazing how things change when the RACISM CARD IS ON THE OTHER FOOT. This country would be much farther along in race relations if people didn’t cry racism in every situation where there are two colors involved. This really negates any real attempt to deal with real racial issues. OF COURSE Al Sharpton was thumpin his chest trying to figure out who he could ‘SHAKE DOWN’ next–even telling several call-ins to his show to “shut up”, now of course he is eating crow and trying to justify the elitist professor for the same thing he was seeking the noose for on the police officer. Tonight on CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Ms Murphy said that Crowley approached Whaley and told her to “Wait there”. there was no further conversation. How did a report of a detailed conversation end up in his report? Did he fabricate this conversation? Did the conversation occur with another officer? Were police notes combined?
Crowley’s police report is an official document and would be included at trial. Shouldn’t there be a clarification of this apparent discrepancy?
If Crowley’s report is in error, can we trust his version of the conversation at the door to and inside Gates’ house?
Crowley should be glad that no one is making a bigger deal of this than they have.
In several cases, the courts in Massachusetts have considered whether a person is guilty of disorderly conduct for verbally abusing a police officer. In Commonwealth v. Lopiano, a 2004 decision, an appeals court held it was not disorderly conduct for a person who angrily yelled at an officer that his civil rights were being violated. In Commonwealth v. Mallahan, a decision rendered last year, an appeals court held that a person who launched into an angry, profanity-laced tirade against a police officer in front of spectators could not be convicted of disorderly conduct
The Cambridge Police should be training their officers to know the difference between legal and illegal conduct. It wasn’t disorderly conduct. At least not in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The more I look at this entire episode the more evidence I see that proves to me that Gates is overcompensating for what he sees as his own inadequacies. First evidence of this came while I watched a youtube video of him giving a speech. He on several occasions said what he thought was witty and then immediately turned to his audience of peers looking for approval of what he said. He did this three times: once when demeaned Clarence Thomas, once when demeaned North Carolina, and again when smeared Newt Gingrich. On all three of these occasions, he turned all the way around and looked to see if his audience approved of what he was saying. He needed this approval. He basked in the approval. Why? I think he is a small man in stature he feels insecure about his own physical presence and overcompensates for that insecurity by saying things to draw attention to himself whether what he says is sensible or not. Also, I think he doubts his own intelligence and is constantly saying things that he thinks others will want to here. This is probably what happened at his house. When the officer came, Gates felt threatened, whether he was or not, and began to overcompensate by shooting off his mouth and playing his role as the victim. He felt at a disadvantage physically and compensated by spouting platitudes about being a ‘black man’ in America, a victim of the white man’s oppression. I’ve seen this happen in real life several times. Once a person gets going running their mouth, they can’t stop and often will say things they don’t mean and say things that don’t make sense. This is why he was arrested. He said demeaning things to the officer, things that he probably didn’t think about very much. Look at his face in the picture. He’s out of it and his mouth is overtaking him. The cop probably should have just let him go, realizing he was just nuts and shooting off his mouth. But, sometimes people say things that get them into trouble, and once they are there, their only resource is to play the vulnerable and picked-on victim which Gates surely sees himself as being.
Put this thing to bed! Forget about the beer thing. Since when are serious issues discussed over alcohol?

The officer was responding to a call of a possible breaking and entering in progress. Why did not Mr gates just calmly show his ID? That is what I would have done. This officer is only trying to protect someones property and life from criminal acts. Mr Gates and Obama(and all the racists here) both look like racist fools from where I’m standing.

He followed Crowley out of the house where he was arrested after repeatedly being told to stop and following and screaming at the cop in front of a black cop and a Latino cop who wrote the police report. Nice try, but it really makes you look stupid to anyone who read the police report to be defending Gates. The only reason you defend him is because you are black and have something against white people or you believe Obama can do no wrong. And from what I have seen so far Obama has done ALOT of wrong. Way to alienate all of the independents that put you into office sir. You chose a black man over law enforcement just for being black.
The case itself is not controversial at all Gates just tried to make something of it and they should NOT have dropped the charges they should have made an example. When the police question you, you cooperate. But I guess if you are black in America its ok to freak out on the cops and then complain more of you are in jail so that shows racial profiling? Maybe blacks and Latinos as mr. Obama has said get pulled over disproportionately precisely because of the fact they commit more crimes per capita and even citing that fact makes one appear to be racist? This country is so far off what it was intended to be. I only hope the good American black people reading this story can see how ridiculous this whole situation is and see how race baiting just ruins credibility when there is not a true valid racial component to the story.
I cannot believe the ignorance of the president in this case. This is the equivalent of a white president siding with a white man over a black officer when all of the facts are against him. If blacks were as large an ethnicity as whites, the crime stats would be so overwhelmingly committed by blacks than any other ethnicity, 73.9% of America is white, while only 13.5% are Black. But in your own FBI stats, blacks, who live mainly in the south & urban areas. This is where the violent crimes are being committed far ie; murder,rape,robbery,drugs etc. African-Americans are much more violent than any other ethnic group by far…

This immediately implies that Obama not only knew that he would field the question about Gates arrest, but that he deliberately took it as the last question, and the only question that was not related to healthcare plan. Furthermore, that his answer was carefully crafted in response.
This would indicate that President Obama deliberately wanted to raise a race issue to show himself a “champion” of racially abused in order to defer attention from the rapid decline in momentum that was occuring with his universal healthcare plan.
Obama is not stupid, but rather very caculating, and for the elected leader of a democratic replublic, in a very frightening way. Who knows what will happen as his popularity declines further and his back is pushed up against the wall.

officer Crowley arrest report… notice where officer Crowley say’s he was informed by 911 caller that..reported: two black men with back packs… why would an officer report this when the 911 caller say’s she never made that claim?
When dealing with a police officer who you think is guilty of racially profiling you, most educated black men would know to ask for a name AND BADGE NUMBER. I find it interesting that there is no mention of Gates asking for Crowley’s badge number. I believe that is something a man like Gates would ask at a bare minimum. There seem to be huge gaps of intuitive information in the report.
Yes Gates is the one who acted “stupidly”. He was tired, in a bad mood, and he temporarily forgot the rules of the game. Interestingly enough the main people arguing that it was proper to arrest a man in his own home committing no crime, are the same ones who will raise hell about “big brother” telling us how to think, feel, and behave in our private lives. i am tired of black racism in america,blacks can be as racists as they want even toward one another and its alright,why is this behavour condoned in the black and hispanic communities towards whites,but if a white defends themselves and try to defuse a situation its automatically racism…when we stop racism among all peoples in the usa we might be able to move this country forward…
