California Sets New Auto Emission Standards

California is adopting rigorous new emissions standards for cars that will force automakers to make different engines, more hybrids and a diverse collection of alternative fuel vehicles.

Funny how the U.S. government will use the Intestate Commerce Clause to strangle commerce, but not "regulate" it. All these COLA laws need to go the way of Coke II.

California a beautiful state that that was once the envy of the world has been reduced to being a punch line by the left. Sad and disturbing.

There is going to be a point when companies will make a business decision and just decide it's not worth doing business in some places. See California.

All it takes for progress to happen is for gov to get out of the way…I built my own hydrogen fuel cell, gasoline augmentation device…The system gets me considerable more MPG, pollutes less because the engine uses less gasoline, and due to hydrogen the combustion is more efficient…and hydrogen exhaust is only oxygen and water vapor…Yet, it is illegal, the smog guy bled from the ears when I told him…according to the government, you can't alter your engine at all period…and any device you do install has to be officially approved by the clean air board, and given a green stamp…The smog guy advised me to get a pre-smog vehicle for my experiments…I'm looking for a early 70's 4×4 with a huge gas gurgling engine…Hydrogen will do wonders for it, so the gov can bugger off…

Yea under the iberal loons running the state, all new car emissions have to contain at least 90% marijuana smoke, so as to keep the lemming voters who elect them – fat, dumb and clueless.

Also, Obama's $15 a gallon gas will make it all academic anyway

MonoPed   January 26th, 2012 - 5:42 am

A simple way to end this is for the auto makers to quit building CA compliant cars. New car dealers will move out of the state, and more freedom loving folks will move out of the state and hasten it's demise.

DanielShays   January 26th, 2012 - 5:43 am

Buckipatriot   January 26th, 2012 - 5:49 am

I concur…what is the point of an auto manufacturer trying to sell in California? Who will be able to afford these stupid cars?

John_Campbell   January 26th, 2012 - 6:03 am

California has now painted firewood as some kind of an evil and regulated accordingly. This year it cost more to purchase firewood than natural gas to last the course of the winter. In 2008 I was spotlighted in the news for my comments on this during a live teleconference with the Air Board for having pointed out exactly what Sacramento was up to and that this would be the end result because they wanted to force everyone by way of economics onto the gas and electric companies lists. This was done for the control factor because they regulate the industry and to get the industry to go along they made the deal to coerce the citizenry. Now my EPA government approved wood stove sits dormant while the cost of gas and electric keeps going up, but just enough to keep it below the cost of firewood.

Another side effect, now farmers can't find ways to get rid of the culled orchard trees without it costing a fortune to do it. What worked for countless decades is suddenly now the bad guy. Many people who made their living on getting the culled trees and chopping it up for firewood to sell have now gone out of business. That was part of the leftists scheme all along. It's bad enough that federal government EPA regulations have gone way past their bounds, now both Washington and Sacramento are trying to exploit them for stealing taxpayer dollars. Live outside California? Guess what! Your tax dollars are paying for this garbage too.

Think of it this way. You may want to condemn California for what goes on here. OK, I can understand that because I've been fighting it for decades too. Just be sure to include yourselves when you do because this didn't happen without your failure to stop the EPA.

Petroglyph   January 26th, 2012 - 6:26 am

We didn't elect this government, the Unions, Acorn, dead people and illegals did.

Kind of hard to win the game when the ref's have been bought and paid for by the Democratic/Progressive machine.

PushHereToFlush   January 26th, 2012 - 6:44 am

Obama has made a deal with Brown to bail them out in return for forcing people to buy the Chevy Volt.

If we stick to the principle of no state bailouts, California will remedy its own problems, one way or the other.

I won't go to California. I used to go to a professional meeting there periodically, but no more.

FrankensteinsMonster   January 26th, 2012 - 6:48 am

I heard about this from my neighbor who is a firewood dealer. He said it's really hard to get almond because the EPA has subsidized wood chippers to chop it all up before firewood dealers could get it.

Cherry_Trees   January 26th, 2012 - 7:23 am

MPG over 35 today and in the future = tiny, under-powered tin-cans with no storage space, and likely just for 2 people. Basically, commuter cars. If you have a family, luggage, sports equipment, cargo, etc. (normal use), these cars are nonfunctional. CA is always trying to defy the laws of physics, like all progressives, unicorn and fairy dust technology is always free and easy – all you have to do is mandate it and viola'

Electric cars are useless and hybrids do not improve gas mileage over their cost to make them. I work in the industry, go to the conferences and the EPA people and politicians are the most drunk on fairy tales. The engineers still shake their heads in bewilderment that hybrids and electrics are being pushed: they are a NET increase in carbon emissions over normally powered cars!!!

Oregontea   January 26th, 2012 - 8:17 am

I live in central Oregon and use firewood exclusively to heat my home and have for years. The home has a forced air system also. To use only 1 mo. of the furnace, it costs more than a whole winters worth of wood. The local government tried to regulate the use of stoves several years ago and was shot down so fast many didn't have time to eject. The arguement about emissions is so foolish as to not be worth mentioning except that the controlled burns here every season put up many times more emissions than all the stoves combined many times over. Regular forest fires, well……..
The employment factor here is huge as well. Many, many folks make or suppliment their incomes by cutting wood.
i'm staying with my wood stove till they pry my axe out of my cold dead hand.

grimreaperxx   January 26th, 2012 - 8:28 am

Here is the way it works in Ca.

The legislature comes up with a crazy law or regulation. They say it will take effect 10 years or so from then.
Why?
Because when that law, rule or regulation comes into effect and grossly increases the cost of products or generates huge govt cost or tax, those politicians will be long gone…. out of office. The legislators that are in office will bemoan the fact but will say that is the law as it was handed to them, they are so sorry but that is that.

We have a slew of social engineering laws that are hitting the books such as the new smog standards. We have the Ca Global Warming Law that is going to hit this year with the implementation of carbon credit auctions. We have mandatory green energy content rules for utilities. Last year the LA DWP requested a 35% rate increase to meet those new Green content laws.

So the cost of cars will skyrocket to meet the standards. 15% of all cars have to be electric? What if no one wants them?
And as the Toyota spokesman said, cars will need to change to meet the standard. Get smaller and lighter. How many more people will die or suffer serious injury in accidents, as a result of driving in a small plastic econo coffin/box.

How much more waste will we produce (including heavy metal toxic battery mfg and disposal) as we buy high priced disposable cars, and switch mobile sources of pollution for stationary ones. Even if you plug it in, the energy needs to come from somewhere. How many more taxpayers and businesses will flee the state, leaving no taxpayers to pay the bills for all the tax takers that populate the state. Ca has 18% of the US popluation, but 33% of the welfare cases. The large illegal alien population is a net lose, even after one considered the low wages they are paid, the costs of health, education, welfare payments far out strip the wage benefits and make it a net loss.

So soon, who will be left to pay the bills, and how will the poor and young, that democrats give so much lip service to, be able to buy a car to get to work. How will the elderly and poor be able to pay grossly higher utility costs to heat or A/C their houses. How many elderly on low fixed incomes will die as they cant afford AC in the summer? Sometimes these social engineering democrats have no idea how the poor and low income people are affected by their feel good schemes, hatched from their comfortable existences in West LA and San Francisco.

Wake up people! These new auto emission standards are not just, for clean air. It is about Control. Yes, that's right! It's about controlling the Freedom of Movement within a Free Society. Government wants to continually grow and control. When, Government has forced the average car owner out of their car by various regulatory impasses and cost, watch out! Not, only will people be forced to ride Government trains and buses, they will do so at the pleasure of Government's convenience, cost, service and above all, Control. Yes, Government will control where the people will live by controlling the service routes and costs. Government wants people to live and work in high density Population Centers. These high density Population Centers makes it far easier to control/enslave people. The ultimate goal is to have the people restrained to living in Government Controlled Ghettos also, known as Cities.
