During his first town hall meeting there was the matter of the astroturfing that went on. There was one side that was bussed in from other states, paid for in the way of lunches, dinners, signs, t-shirts, etc. They were given time off or paid through their unions to come to the meetings. The supporters were given these benefits, while the protesters filled the parking lot with their cars, had to make their own signs and t-shirts, and made their own meals. If they were paid, they need to ask for more money, rides, or maybe they are just hording the money. The real Astroturfing that is going on in these meeting are by the supporters. Astroturf being a fake grassroots movement, these are the people that have large organizations backing them, helping them, and maybe even paying them to go to these meetings. Now don’t get me wrong there are equally strong feelings on both sides but when it comes to astroturfing, Obama supporters and unions take the cake.
I must be a glutton for punishment. I can’t believe that I sat and watched that Town Hall meeting for over an hour. I could not figure out what in the h-ll he was talking about. I have never heard this guy answer one question straight on. He just jabbers on and on about nothing!!! Then this brain dead audience claps and claps. I think I need an aspirin!!! Zach needs a dose of reality and to question the classic liberal economics model he is being fed in school. Public options are inherently less expensive than private simply because they don’t run for a profit. For example, California had efficient, low-cost public electricity until 2000 when it was privatized in the name of “lowering costs by increasing competition”. Once privatized, energy trading companies came in, restricted supply, and prices sky-rocketed. Deregulation and privatization didn’t lower prices, but it did encourage corruption and created blackouts that resulted in several unnecessary deaths.
The man lied about how he met his wife to satisfy a college graduation speech he was giving! GEEZ! He has no credibility whatsoever.

The answer is – it can’t and we expect the proivate insurance companies to go out of business so that we end up with a single payer system.

A lot of people were lead to believe…they weren’t thinking hard enough that voting an inexperienced guy can actually run a country. Wow.
Since the bill is still in draft he said they will have to find ways to run a self-sustaining health care option. He also said if the tax payers have to keep funding it it wouldn’t achieve the goals we set out. He said the health care option would get their money from market sources not the Federal Reserve which means they won’t be getting super cheap money which means they could lower their prices even further. Other methods of creating a level playing field will have to be explored.
Are prices going to get driven down? Of course. That only means the heath insurance companies will make less money they aren’t going to die. You’re worried about insurance companies remaining billionaires but it’s o.k. for a teacher to make $30,000 a year.

Thanks graduate student for asking the question that I would have asked if I was at the meeting. The administration is blatantly disregarding statistics and economics to push this reform bill. We need health care reform, but not by the government. Insurance companies and pharmaceuticals you have to be two of the driving forces behind this change. If you private industry continue to be complacent about not handling this agenda, the next time the people will force your hand. Power to the People.
No wonder Obama’s against waterboarding — it’s probably the only way to get him to admit that he has no answers to legitimate questions about his health care scheme. “I think we can do it” is all he can come up with to describe how he will create his fantasy “public option” that is non-profit, competitive, and receives no government subsidies. He then hedges his failure to answer the question by stating well, the public option’s not that important, anyway — it’s just a small piece in the big plan. Great, so the big plan is orders of magnitude worse than his non-answer to a simple question suggests. Keep talking, Obama — people are staring to listen.

SASKATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country’s health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.
Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country – who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting – recognize that changes must be made.
“We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize,” Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.
“We know that there must be change,” she said. “We’re all running flat out, we’re all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands.”
The pitch for change at the conference is to start with a presentation from Dr. Robert Ouellet, the current president of the CMA, who has said there’s a critical need to make Canada’s health-care system patient-centred. He will present details from his fact-finding trip to Europe in January, where he met with health groups in England, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and France.
His thoughts on the issue are already clear. Ouellet has been saying since his return that “a health-care revolution has passed us by,” that it’s possible to make wait lists disappear while maintaining universal coverage and “that competition should be welcomed, not feared.”
In other words, Ouellet believes there could be a role for private health-care delivery within the public system.
He has also said the Canadian system could be restructured to focus on patients if hospitals and other health-care institutions received funding based on the patients they treat, instead of an annual, lump-sum budget. This “activity-based funding” would be an incentive to provide more efficient care, he has said.

The insurance companies already make the determination of whether or not your gonna get coverage for a particular item. They determine if they are going to pay for an item you need, and how much of it you will get.

The US Postal Service cannot even figure out how to design decent stamps for heaven’s sake. We need LESS insurance (both private and govt. programs like Medi’cade/care) not more. Insurance has driven the cost of medical care up. Less insurance = bringing costs down. How to start a revolution? We need to collectively burn our insurance policies.
