Bloomberg Goes To War With Teachers’ Unions

Mayor Michael Bloomberg responds to the new teachers' union ad that came out this week criticizing Bloomberg for "playing politics with schools." Bloomberg defends his argument that teachers need to be better evaluated to enhance student learning.

Everyone has their nose in education except the parents.

They just tell the parents to shut up, sit down, and send us money.

Whats_Up   January 27th, 2012 - 10:43 am

Teacher's Unions have become ALL about "them" and NOTHING about the children. Selfish bastards.

NotKennedy   January 27th, 2012 - 10:43 am

That hardly sounds like a case of 'going to war' against a union.

workinglate   January 27th, 2012 - 10:44 am

better late than never, Mike – welcome to the most obvious fight in modern history.

EricBrodin   January 27th, 2012 - 10:44 am

Unions and lawyers.
All they do is make sh!t more expensive.
Other than that, they're two of the most worthless groups in the world!

★FALCON★   January 27th, 2012 - 10:46 am

Bloomberg will be kissing the teacher's union's ass by the time this is over. He's pathetic.

sephat   January 27th, 2012 - 10:48 am

With Scott Walker, Juan Williams and Bloomberg all coming together against them, the teachers unions might actually be broken. I can dream.

Iamwitheileen   January 27th, 2012 - 10:50 am

Independent evaluation would be the way to go but he will probably have more union goons doing the evaluation – that's how it works in NYC.

Bloomberg will grease up and take it up the tailpipe. He's a gutless libtard.

Not a Bloomberg fan, but I realy dislike teachers unions – Because of them it took 10 years to fire the most incompetent teacher I have ever seen in my life. I have no idea how many kids were denied help because this idiot could not find his a$$ with both hands and a map.

IronTigersVet   January 27th, 2012 - 10:56 am

Nah, you still have ACORN, CAIR, ACLU, Black Caucus and most importantly the DNC.

Now you have the most worthless groups in the world.

Georg_01   January 27th, 2012 - 11:03 am

Bloomers didn't have the nads to kick out the occupoo squatter punks, why does he think he has the nads to take on the teacher unions?

Grace656   January 27th, 2012 - 11:05 am

Monopolies are just not efficient – what the schools need is real competition.

Oregontea   January 27th, 2012 - 11:06 am

Bloomberg acts like a hedgefund manager. Once the market is obvious to everybody, they jump in.
He must be coming up for reelection.
He has chosen a tough fight where he is.
Go get em. It is better late than never.

You better believe that the unions will go to war. A very thin-skinned lot.

MARYP912   January 27th, 2012 - 11:08 am

Hey Bloomberg…you're the idiot. Get a clue….you've been in the pockets of the unions….like forver! Did you forget the term: "don't bite the hand that feeds ya!" Obviously, your teachers unions did…ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

And please immediately begin purging the huge number of overpaid, totally unnecessary new breed of $100,000 PhD's who don't teach and can't speak well called "administrators" acting as the go-betweens keeping teacher's salaries high and keeping politicians paid off.

As bad as teacher's unions are, "administrators" are even worse because they're drawing such huge salaries as they add a whole new level of corruption. In fact, I wonder if the teacher's unions helped create this hideous new level of bureacracy destroying public education? Or is it modeled on the people destroying college education — since they are so similar?

Whats_Up   January 27th, 2012 - 11:12 am

The "We know Best" is getting pretty old from these teacher's unions. After listening to Shapiro's "conservative" response to SOTU on where our kids sadly rank internationally, one would think scrapping the public education system in full would be a given …the time to reboot ALL is near, my friend.

Makahala   January 27th, 2012 - 11:17 am

It's really sad what the teachers unions have become. Useful Idiots all. Well most.

Navy Gentleman   January 27th, 2012 - 11:19 am

I agree. If you took the communist and socialist teachers out of the system, I wonder how many teachers would be left?

NotKennedy   January 27th, 2012 - 11:20 am

I have no doubt about the unions, it's Bloomberg I am concerned with. Whatever the outcome, it is no skin off his keister.

Facialyptic   January 27th, 2012 - 11:23 am

He is a real fighter when it comes to sugar and table salt.

NotKennedy   January 27th, 2012 - 11:24 am

Were it not for the lawyers, there would be no issue with healthcare costs. In the old days we paid the doctors and they practiced medicine in a different environment. Under this upside down program the doctors have to bill unspeakable amounts of money just to get some of it. Tort reform would resolve a whole lot of health costs.

NotKennedy   January 27th, 2012 - 11:25 am

LOL, he is a real radical kind of guy!

Navy Gentleman   January 27th, 2012 - 11:27 am

Today is History Dress Up Day at my grandson's school. He dressed up as General MacArthur with his hat and corncob pipe. The parents come by and the kids tell who they are and what they did that made them part of history. I must say that I was a proud Grandpa.

Whats_Up   January 27th, 2012 - 11:33 am

You know, I've thought about this. Collectively – nationwide, I'd have to say only 25% of the teachers would be left. And if you went State-by-State – the Blue States would maybe have 10%, while the Red States would have about 40%.

What is truly sad, no matter the state – between the Fed and State Dept's of Education and then the county Boards of Education, teachers are told what and how to teach. They have NO freedoms or liberties. Gawd forbid they try and DO what is right. Teachers have been ordered to do what is wrong, IMO.

szysgt   January 27th, 2012 - 11:36 am

Don't forget about trans fats. "Henceforth Unionized Teachers will no longer be permitted to have trans fats of any kind"

LibertyWriter   January 27th, 2012 - 11:36 am

You take the unions out of the schools, we might be surprised how many teachers resume teaching. Just a guess.

LOL – corncob pipe? In many schools, your grandson would have been suspended, Navy. I kid you not.
Drug Free Zones and all. Too bad he couldn't have had a holstered (fake) pistol, too. You've done well
in raising your kids. And I believe you are going to do an even better job at influencing your grandchildren.

BobSalem   January 27th, 2012 - 12:08 pm

Yeah, and if you dare have anything to say your kids and you will be subject to their harassment. Go figure.

Whats_Up   January 27th, 2012 - 12:10 pm

Your guess is more than correct, Liberty. There is only ONE way to terminate these unions: stop ALL automatic "payroll deductions" from teachers paychecks (like WI Gov. Scott Walker did).

These Unions were only able to get this "automatic payroll deduction" for dues by suing, initially. Case precedent was set long ago. Some states, counties and cities started allowing for payroll deductions for things like insurance, 401K's and even charitable contributions. The unions came in and said if you can do this for one then you MUST do this for us …so they did. By eliminating this "automatic" stuff – the unions will have no recourse and would have to collect their dues one-on-one. Would be their worst nightmare, requiring manpower they do not have. And a large portion of teachers, I believe, would cease to pay those dues.

Navy Gentleman   January 27th, 2012 - 12:15 pm

The pipe was non functional but I hadn't thought about that. 5th grade vs high school is why we got away with it I guess.

Thank you Whats Up!

You have done well too.

Thanks for the elaboration.

MrRight   January 27th, 2012 - 12:45 pm

I loathe unions except in the case of New York and California who richly deserve the shafting they are on the receiving end of by unions.

Pull your kids out of public schools before it's too late

Harlo   January 27th, 2012 - 12:58 pm

NO PUBLIC UNIONS.

They've forgotten who they work for. Now they think we work for them and that they know what's best for our children. It's time to put a stop to it before the Teachers' Unions, and all public unions, get more powerful. We all know the Mob is involved in many of the public unions. Why don't our government officials seem to do anything about it? Maybe they're just too connected.

MonkeyBad   January 27th, 2012 - 1:00 pm

People are beginning to see through the unions.

Omnivorous   January 27th, 2012 - 1:08 pm

Most parents a far worse at teaching kids than teachers. So yes, that is why there is a public school system.

From_Equestria   January 27th, 2012 - 1:17 pm

Yet again, that is easily proven false by home school test scores over public schools. Just face the facts, public schools are a burden to our childrens education and forcing them to think only one way, liberal/progressive. It is how we got the uneducated and poor work ethic OWS movement.

Dedjester   January 27th, 2012 - 1:37 pm

You forget congress. As far as I can tell, all they do is sit around and come up with "new and improved ways" for us to bend over.

I'm guessing it's just to distract us from what the other hand is doing.

mg24   January 27th, 2012 - 3:11 pm

Right you are. A movie called 'The Cartell' (can be streamed from Netflix) is precisely about that.

LuKuj   January 27th, 2012 - 3:34 pm

I taught in a state where there are NO unions, though there are teacher organizations which have much less power. The teachers I knew DID teach. After a due process, poor teachers were removed.
The main problem was the trendy, expensive programs that were changed regularly, usually just about the time the teacher's finally figured out how to implement them in a way that worked. Too many were cutesy with lots of bells and whistles and little substance. They relied far too much on group work and creativity rather than actually learning facts and how to think.

LibertyWriter   January 27th, 2012 - 4:15 pm

I have little direct personal knowledge of Education but I have one story to tell. A friend's son told me about a group project with two other students that he received a grade based upon the caliber of the project. Discovering that he had to rely on two other people for HIS grade, I became more interested. The project was to make a poster with cutout and pasted pictures depicting the earthquake in Haiti–sort of a current events project. I asked him for what class. He said English. English class? Current events? Pictures pasted on construction paper? My friend's son was a jr in high school. I was speechless.

ForgottenDreams   January 27th, 2012 - 4:38 pm

Well, Michael, the chickens are coming home to roost. You were a Republican (at best a RINO) then you switched to an independent. Now you are a de facto Democrat. During these metamorphoses, the only constant was your liberalism. Now you're up against liberal organizations, the teachers' unions, which expect the professional courtesy of your compliance with their demands. Welcome to the Party, Comrade Bloomberg! Your political and personal opinions are subordinate to the collective good. We will refer this policy decision to the Central Committee and then inform you of its decision. Teachers & Liberals of the World Unite!

LuKuj   January 27th, 2012 - 5:13 pm

this is NOT uncommon. I remember my son completing group projects on his own because the rest of the group didn't want to do the work and didn't care about his work and he did. Far too much of the day in school is spent coloring, cutting, and pasting – and I'm NOT talking about kinder and grade 1 here. As a teacher, I could never figure out what cutting and pasting pictures taught the kids, and my students didn't spend their time on the "busy baby work".

LibertyWriter   January 27th, 2012 - 5:31 pm

I did ask what was the purpose. He told me it was to learn to work together. I thought that was what playground was for.
