Mr Gates, my mother in law was 83 but in relatively good health when she went into a national health hospital in Europe with digestion. She was given pain relief and was on the mend when she got a virus (because the hospitals are filthy) and eventually suffered a heart attack as a result.

You see, the death panel had determined that people her age were not eligible for life saving measures. DNR or do not resiscitate. Unfortunately for her that meant she had the heart attack on a chair and was left to die on the seat where she sat. She was in a room of 8 other people.

SHE WAS IN A HOSPITAL AND THE STAFF DID NOTHING TO HELP HER AFTER A HEART ATTACK BUT LEFT HER TO DIE ON A SEAT!!!!

But I am sure you would have no problem if your own mother was or would have been treated like that? Because when you start determining who can live and die and why, then further down the road the elderly suffer heart attacks and are left to die on a chair.

I wouldn't want anyone to suffer that humiliation–especially my mother.

I have a liberal friend who was very involved in her son being diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. I was always curious, she seemed so "proud" her son was "diagnosed." Wow, that liberal compassion that I'm always hearing about really goes out the window once you have a lot of money and talk about the world for the rest of us in a theoretical way. Hmm, I thought the system libs wanted in place was supposed to remove the profit motive from the equation? I mean wasn't all health care supposed to be free once the system had access to the bottomless pit of funds from the American taxpayer? This has nothing to do with providing health care for all, but merely a plan to transfer power to decide from insurance companies, who make financial decisions and are bound by market forces, to a panel of government appointees, who will make the same decisions based on who-knows-what (money, politics, race, age, etc.) Truly scary. Let's face it, those on the left want health care to be available only to the young (those who need it less and contribute little to it financially.) Those that will need it the most (the elderly, primarily) will be the ones who, after years of contributing to the system, will be denied because the left sees their lives as worthless and not worth the expense of saving. So that is how they see the new, cheaper, streamlined version of government health care running (and they will have the nerve to proclaim it a success.)

Why doesn't anyone focus on why healthcare is so expensive? The approach always seems to be how it will be paid for and who will pay for it.

I agree with the statement above, having an incredible amount of money does tend to make you feel some sort of guilt and therefore become a leftist / socialist / progressive. People also tend to think that people with humongous wealth are somehow better able to dispense advice.

That being said, I took up running to extend my life. After 25 years, 5-10 miles every single day, rain, snow or shine, I realized that the extra few years I was adding to my life were the ones I would spend wearing diapers in the home. I stopped running and now eat and drink to my hearts content and you know what? I'm happier. 20 pounds happier but happier and not suffering from exercise induced anorexia.

The reality is most people don't knowingly spend a million dollars in the last 3 months of life, and everyone that has experienced the death of an elderly parent knows that. If the figure really is a million dollars in the last 3 months of life, it is spent fighting serious illness, of people healthy enough to live years longer, but they lose the battle, just more lies from liberal elitist, life is for me, but not for thee.

Sending people to their deaths to satisfy the needs of the state is a legitimate government function to statists, like Gates. And by god it is the duty of citizens to give it up if it furthers the needs of the state. Doctors don't know everything. With the logic you are using, why would we be concerned about extending the life of anyone diagnosed with terminal disease. (Same logic as "I'm just going to get dirty, so why take a bath?") I'm glad that you aren't my attending physician or my "close" family member! I can feel the love from here. There is a parallel betwen Mr. Gates and Obama, that is freightening in that we have two people, one a self made billionaire college drop out, and another who is "supposedly" a Harvard grad, who are so disconnected from main stream America, it makes us wonder exactly how in the hell, either one of them acheived the promenince they now enjoy.

The problem with what he is saying is there is no way to tell for sure when most people are at the last 3 months of their life. My mother-in-law was given 6 months, had surgery, chemo, and radiation and lived for almost 5 more years. She was thankful for each day. She was very sick at times and pulled through each time and had time in between treatments that she enjoyed herself and visited her brothers and sisters. My father-in-law had CPR done one him twice while he was in the hospital when he was in his mid 80s. If we used statistics and guessed what would happen to him, CPR would have never been done on him. He didn't sit in the hospital for 3 months and then die, he recovered and is fine. I used to have a lot of respect for Bill Gates, but I have lost it. He seems to think he is some sort of psychic god. Let me add, he and his family will get whatever treatment they want by paying cash. It's the rest of the people that have to share.

Mr. Gates freedom is not just for software engineers. Our private sector i.e. Professional Medical Doctors with PhDs (and not government or owners of computer software companies) should be in charge of our Healthcare; as it was in the past.
