Beck Forbidden to Pray at Kennedy Center Event

The syndicated radio talk show host told his listeners that the Kennedy Center management has told him that he can't include an opening prayer during his scheduled event next week in Washington DC.

August 16, 2010 at 8:25 am - The Glenn Beck Show
Dateline: New York
bobbyj77   August 16th, 2010 - 8:30 am

Beck will pray anyway. Mark my words.

Then again, if he starts out with "AS-SALAMU ALAYKUM", that's surely allowed.

gop HACK   August 16th, 2010 - 8:34 am

fuck the kennedy’s hypocrit catholics!

SP_Batman   August 16th, 2010 - 8:34 am

What are they going to do, arrest a few thousand people for praying for the country? Let's get this party started!

DavidC99   August 16th, 2010 - 8:35 am

It's forbidden to pray there — but Islam is getting a shrine near Ground Zero. Insanity doesn't even begin to describe this.

Tomtom29   August 16th, 2010 - 8:35 am

Just sneeze. The rest will be history.

mtv22   August 16th, 2010 - 8:36 am

Selective religious tolerance in NYC.

catzmeow   August 16th, 2010 - 8:39 am

He can pray as long as he faces Mecca and says it in Arabic.

KimNTennessee   August 16th, 2010 - 8:40 am

Pray Glenn Pray Pray Pray Pray all you want. I am sure Obama will come out and insist that our country's freedom and tolerance of religion should allow you to do that!! Pray Pray Pray and Remember in November

BFPA61   August 16th, 2010 - 8:41 am

They could'nt stop it if they wanted to.

Tuco   August 16th, 2010 - 8:41 am

Pray Glenn. If they arrest you, the American people will revolt against this intrusive group of rights takers. I have a feeling he is going to have some of the most influential leaders of religion in the world there. I sit here and shake my head endlessly at this Administration and the shear levels they go to supress the majority.

Chimenin   August 16th, 2010 - 8:42 am

Sorry Glenn, you're a Christian and you have no rights. Silly Christian… Your prayers aren't as pretty as the ones King O' refers to as wonderful music.

Subsalior   August 16th, 2010 - 8:44 am

You can pray to Mecca ….

Barry says so…..

Shiori   August 16th, 2010 - 8:46 am

Kennedy Center [Kennedy was Catholic] has religious events all the time. A big one in recent memory [2006] was a celebration of MLK where choirs sung [Sen. Obama was in attendance]. Hey – remember when Rev. Dr. MLK used to pray over a big microphone? In public?

This is arbitrary and ridiculous. Once again, rights are afforded to some and not to others. What happened to that 'Freedom to Worship' stuff? Guess it only applies to Muslims in front of a burnt out Burlington Coat Factory.

RedNM   August 16th, 2010 - 8:46 am

What the Kennedy Center is saying is that no CHRISTIAN prayers can be said in their federally-funded center. What they are implying is that it will be okay if Mr. Beck and the entire crowd bow down, face Mecca and sing the praises of Holy Allah! Am I right?

smellyfinger   August 16th, 2010 - 8:46 am

The only Democrats I like are the ones that moved to Canada

PaBowHunter   August 16th, 2010 - 8:46 am

Is this the breaking point? Will people finally wake up and speak out? Some are, but many many more need to do so also. Would the Kennedy Center tell a muslim gathering that they could not pray? I think not.

freedom rocks   August 16th, 2010 - 8:48 am

Godless governments fear the word of God, history is full of examples. Our government now believes it is God.

metamarcisf   August 16th, 2010 - 8:49 am

It's time that we seriously consider amending the 10 commandments so that the right to keep and bear arms is dealt with specifically.

TexasStomp   August 16th, 2010 - 8:49 am

Anyone…..ANYONE who spends ONE DIME, ONE SECOND AT ONE EVENT AT THE KENNEDY CENTER….THE CENTER NAMED AFTER THE MOST PROMINENT CATHOLIC FAMILY IN AMERICA…..

spaceracer423   August 16th, 2010 - 8:49 am

Remenber when "free speech" used to mean FREE SPEECH?

Wasnt that the whole point of the 1st amendment?

Becides, its the Kennedy Center!
The Kennedys are known for their family prayer:
"Jesus, I hope no one finds out about this…"
I think its on their coat of arms.

wohlfguy   August 16th, 2010 - 8:50 am

It is dealt with specifically. We have the right to keep and bear arms. It does not get more specific than that.

PaulLThompson   August 16th, 2010 - 8:51 am

America is being pushed, to far!

Why do you believe that the first right is your right to pray?
When we forget God, evil fills the void..it's that simple and
our country has forgotten much!

wohlfguy   August 16th, 2010 - 8:51 am

Maybe if he told them he was going to pray to Allah then they would allow it.

everette18294   August 16th, 2010 - 8:53 am

Sounds like Beck did what all of the rest of us should do, stand up and shout "no way". Sounded like the attorney took the route all attorneys recommend these days when confronted with any threat, "compromise". He did the right thing since there were no rules forbidding prayer and told them to stuff it. I'm sure the weenies at the Kennedy Center are rushing to have the attorneys change the contract. It is time to watch and sue the hell out of them when they try.

melli50   August 16th, 2010 - 8:55 am

Go, Glenn! We are all praying for you!

Patton5   August 16th, 2010 - 8:55 am

"In God we Trust" and the only entities who could be afraid of prayer would be on the wrong end of an exorcist-they really put up a fight when they are being cast out. DC needs the help of St. Michael the Archangel.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host –
by the Divine Power of God –
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

KimNTennessee   August 16th, 2010 - 8:56 am

As angry as these issues make me I am always relieved when I read that others are as upset as I am. We have hope to reclaim our nation when we stand up together. Obama is the worse thing that has ever happened to this county.

rainmaker1145   August 16th, 2010 - 8:57 am

The irony is that the facility is named after the first Catholic president of our country.

TalkingDust   August 16th, 2010 - 8:57 am

Meshugenah is a term that comes to mind.

Urthmovr   August 16th, 2010 - 8:59 am

It's not forbidden to pray at the Kennedy Center. Glen is making it up.

I'd love to hear the"Kennedy Center lawyers" report on these conversations. But, of course, we'll never hear it on Fox.

CheesecakeLarry   August 16th, 2010 - 9:00 am

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen

BabaTutu   August 16th, 2010 - 9:00 am

To an atheist, prayer is just so much meaningless incantation, and so of no consequence. These people think prayer is powerful and effective in some way or else there would be no point in banning it, so they are not atheists. They believe in a divine power but prefer to see that power separated from people's lives. What kind of person wishes to interpose themselves between people and the divine spirit? None of any virtue I recognize.

Rover_Bump   August 16th, 2010 - 9:02 am

Outrageous. Glenn, do what you intended to do. I have a feeling any goons sent in to stop it are going to get mobbed. They'll be dealing with fervent patriots, not sheep. Might be a healthy revelation for them.

TalkingDust   August 16th, 2010 - 9:04 am

The folks have nailed the not-so-subtle inference here, that Islam is free to worship in private and public; Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, et al, are not. Looks like Dhimmitude is now the order of the day in MexaAmeristan.

Our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves.

mariodebarrio   August 16th, 2010 - 9:05 am

he said they back down on his show today. so yes he will.

david   August 16th, 2010 - 9:07 am

If the Christians cannot pray at the Kennedy center, than I will ask the council of Rabbi’s to set up a meeting there. If they dare say anything about our prayers, we will take care of them, if they want a fight, the center would be a good place to start.

Tea_Party_Power   August 16th, 2010 - 9:07 am

Maybe they should move the prayer to the Mormon God to somehwere NEAR the Kennedy center.

Patkean   August 16th, 2010 - 9:08 am

Before Beck starts to pray, Glenn should quote Mr. Spock from Star Trek The Undiscovered Country: "Go to Hell". Undiscovered country to Klingons meant freedom to go where one wanted, and freedom to choose. Similar to what is at issue with Obama. Obama is everything America fought with the Soviet Union. In addition Muslims have never been stopped from praying at sites in Washington. This 'order' is just part of the effort to secularize America from its Christian roots, pull its citizens away from religious morals, and dumb them down.

If MLK could pray there, so can Beck. Let no bureaucratic bigot stand in his way.

WorldclaZZ   August 16th, 2010 - 9:09 am

I'll bet a prayer to the all-powerful deity GUBMINT to provide, protect and save us would be allowed.

Tea_Party_Power   August 16th, 2010 - 9:09 am

I didnt even know guns were around during the time of Christ. thanks for the update.

Leauxryda   August 16th, 2010 - 9:10 am

Is the government "DARING" Glenn Beck to pray? Isn't this the same event pissing off the NLAACP and the New BP who said they will "be there"?

Here's a reminder from the NLAACP: "Were going to get together because we are not going to let Glenn Beck own the symbolism of Aug. 28th, 2010, National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial said during a National Newspaper Publishers Association breakfast at NNPAs 70th Anniversary Celebration at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers on Friday. Someone said to me, Maybe we shouldnt challenge him. Maybe we should just let him have it. I was like, Brother, where have you been? Where is your courage? Where is your sense of outrage? We need to collaborate and bring together all people of good will, not just Black people, on Aug. 28 to send a message that Glenn Becks vision of America is not our vision of America."

NBP: Malik Zulu Shabazz: "I am aware of it, and that Glenn Beck should not be allowed to have this rally. Glenn Beck is a sneaky little devil, and he does sneaky things, and tries to portray that he’s really not the neo-racist that he really is. And for him to go and to secure the Lincoln Memorial on Dr. King’s birthday will meet not only opposition from civil rights leaders, but it’s going to meet direct opposition from the New Black Panther Party."

So, Mr. Dhimmi-in-Chief…..are you gonna support Mr. Beck's right to lead his event in prayer like you would muslims? Probably not, you hypocrite!!!

I DARE the government to stop him, along with the REST OF AMERICANS in attendance. This WILL be a very interesting day…….

Tea_Party_Power   August 16th, 2010 - 9:11 am

Glen is a well known liar and charlatan, he speaks to the lowest life forms, so what do you expect.

DontTreadOnMe   August 16th, 2010 - 9:11 am

Just to be clear, the event at the Kennedy Center that Glenn is hosting on the evening of the 27th is FREE to the public; tickets will be given out on a 1st-come 1st served basis.

But yeah- all other kennedy center events should lose money.

Patkean   August 16th, 2010 - 9:12 am

Get a grip fool. Beck is a Mormon, he knows more about religious discrimination than Liberals will ever understand. Mormon means Beck prays to God and Jesus like all Christians do.

CheesecakeLarry   August 16th, 2010 - 9:12 am

Proof, you morons, proof. Put up or shut up.

freedom rocks   August 16th, 2010 - 9:13 am

The current administration and congress, I believe are spurring a religious rebirth in America, which just might save the country.

Tea_Party_Power   August 16th, 2010 - 9:15 am

So since he knows so much about religious discrimination, he is fine with upholding the 1st ammendment and letting the Mosque be built on private property in NYC ?

motely   August 16th, 2010 - 9:16 am

OK. So don't Pray. "Speech" the words, instead. Or, don't open with prayer. Define open as, first couple of sentences, then pray, Baby, pray.
Is Kennedy Center a private facility? Then move the venue and instead, skip the speech but have all his audience become individual tourists visiting DC who, on their own, kneel down on the public streets, buses, trains, streets, parks, wherever and PRAY. Mind you, this is not a protest or anything organized so no permits would be necessary, just people kneeling down, where ever pubic, and whenever, all day long pray. Perhaps everyone needs to wear shirts with the Our Father printed on it. "I am not praying, officer, I am just reading aloud his shirt!"
If the Kennedy Center is a government bulding, then Beck doesn't have to pray as he won't be able to stop the audience from turning it into one big prayer fest with lots of sining and praising and PRAYING.

AmericanParch   August 16th, 2010 - 9:16 am

This just shows why there is a battle about Christianity but Muslim can build a monument to their faith next to the largest terrorist attack by Muslim radicals on the whole face of America. Is there some sort of double standard there. ( http://www.americanparchment.com ) The country was at least built off Judeo-Christian beliefs and prayers.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY? PC IS RUNNING AMUCK.

water_buffalo   August 16th, 2010 - 9:16 am

its time these lying hypocrates get bus chucked and let the real Americans take over…. enough of this crap

SubjectofUSSA   August 16th, 2010 - 9:16 am

I'm sure DC would be fine with it if Glen wanted to issue FATWAs, maybe call for the heads of a thousand Jews. But prayers, to that Christian or Mormon GOD… Oh HELL NO

Tea_Party_Power   August 16th, 2010 - 9:16 am

We have all the proof we need. Glen Beck said so , so it must be true…LOL AY

TexasStomp   August 16th, 2010 - 9:17 am

That would imply Americans had balls.

Not holdin my breath on THAT one. Gutless wonders and PC loons are ruining this country!

sheeples R us!

I hope MEN AND WOMEN in NYC will go to the sidewalk outside that center that night and OPENLY PRAY.

HOLD A JFK PRAYER MEMORIAL!

DARE POLICE TO STOP YOU!

DARE THE KENNEDY CENTER TO STOP YOU!

GOD! GROW A PAIR, AMERICA!

CBrooks1976   August 16th, 2010 - 9:18 am

I have made a personal choice.

We all have rights recognized and protected by the Constitution.
It's is very clear that no government body has the legal authority to deprive me of any of those rights.
I'm finished waiting for people to come around and see the light, or hoping that the government I'm forced to fund will stop attacking my way of life.
The Constitution and it's Bill of rights is clear, you don't have to be a scholar or judge to understand it.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

It's as plain as it can be.
The government dose not have the power to tell anybody that they can't pray no matter where they are.
Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion, anyone who doesn't understand that shouldn't get a dime of tax payer founds.

I'm going to exercise my rights because nobody has the authority to interfere.
Anyone who dose is acting unlawfully and I've made up my mind to defend myself, let the chips fall where they may.

Tea_Party_Power   August 16th, 2010 - 9:18 am

I remember when the 1st ammendment meant something too.

Patton5   August 16th, 2010 - 9:18 am

President Kennedy was our only Roman Catholic President, what an insult to him and everything he fought and died for-namely our country. Glenn pray anyway. http://www.prayerfoundation.org/mother_teresa_do_...
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

DontTreadOnMe   August 16th, 2010 - 9:20 am

You are concerned about Beck, when our economy is in the dirt, our federal government is taking over private industries, people cant find work, we are being invaded on our southern border, and our housing market is stagnating. SO glad to see you keep up with current events.

Did you know that China just passed Japan as the second strongest economy in the world?

Did you know that China is predicted to pass the U.S.A within the next 20 year as the strongest economy in the world.

Lets stick to the Beck is a liar and Charlatan schtick, and ignore the real problems we are facing.

Beck is a private citizen, he doesnt have the power to pass legislation that is harmful to our country. Obama, Pelosi, Reid… those are the idiots in control. Beck is irrelevent. Wake up liberal… before its too late!

DarthShatner   August 16th, 2010 - 9:39 am

Perhaps we can expect a comment from the POTUS this week, or the ACLU, in support of first amendment rights of a conservative to exercise their religious beliefs through prayer. Ah, that would be a no, as support for conservative beliefs is about nil. Glenn, take a page out of a commencement exercise where a prayer-denied valedictorian purposely sneezed so the students (who wouldn't be denied saying the word God), oh so wonderfully timed, shouted back "God Bless you." What we are experiencing today is the culmination of allowing decades of political correctness to ravage our country unabated. We have allowed our country to evolve where 20-30% of our population is now dictating how the other 70% will live. As Americans, we must accept the collective responsibility for creating this monster PC culture, and the 70% must draw a line in the sand and say "enough is enough." We start in November. Remember, we get the government we deserve.

Wow! What a bunch of hypocrites (what else did you expect?) Charles Price, an elected judege in Alabama ruled that the 10 Ten Commandments could not be displayed in the courtroom and, for this effort, was awarded the 1997 Profile In Courage award, given to him by Caroline and John-John.

Go to the Kennedy Center web site and do a search for "prayer". All kinds of gospel groups come up. There is no difference with them raising their voice in prayer than it is for a group in the audience to pray. I am sure a few "Amens" come out of the audience.

DO NOT support these bozos unless they let Beck pray there.

'LEAVE NO DEMOCRATZI 'LOON' STANDING IN NOVEMBER'!
———————————————————————————–

America…I know this is the Kennedy Center, but did not the Washington cocoon allow hundreds of Islamics to come to our capital to pray in public to flaunt their presence in our government?

This is still a Judeo/Christian nation. We allow OTHER religions to practice their faith freely…but when it comes to what happens in America…Christianity takes precedence.

Just another reason why we need men/women of the caliber of our founding fathers…this would not have happened in their day…and should not in our day…this is still America…and it is still a Judeo/Christian nation!
