Can we talk Katrina? It has become generally accepted on both sides now that Government Especially the Feds screwed up Katrina. Can someone point to me the facts to support this (and I do not mean talking points)This was a disater of near biblical proportions and exacly how many people died??? What I can point to is the lack of state action(Govenor not calling for evacuation {thank God Bush did}).A lack of local action (not requiring emergency workers to stay, not moving busses from low lying areas). Many like to point to it taking 5 days to get water to the dome,(not sure when that clock started ticking on that statement) but that was an official shelter already stocked, no one died of dehydration or sarvation (not saying they didn’t suffer). The real Katrina bungling started afterwards, when local politicions tried to maintain their fifedoms. The then undersea wards should have been bulldozed and turned into park space and the victums relocated, instead they were held prisoner by the feelgooders who lived elsewhere trying to maintain that sense of communitee (prostitution crack and guns MMM MMM MMM)

Katrina was more of a local democrat problem than a national problem. It was a do nothing democrat mayor and a do nothing democrat governor of the state of Louisiana that led to the mess there. Other states did just fine following conservative principals of personal responsibility. Of course, the mostly democrat victims that insisted on staying and then having the local democrat politicians help them were in for a nasty surprise. Surprise surprise ,the government cant prevent you from getting wet in a storm.

THANK YOU MiPain. As a resident of Houston, and someone who volunteered at the Astro Dome where we housed, fed, clothed, and rendered medical aid to over 200 thousand people following the aftermath of Katrina, I wanted to comment that we were stunned at how unprepared the city of New Orleans was.
No one brings up the point that Major Nagin was responsible for an evacuation plan, and for stock piling provisions, including food, and other basic necessities in preparation of a natural disaster BY LAW. It is required of all Gulf coast cities. They had received Gov. funds to maintain this, but they never did it. The reason Houston was able to take on this many people at once, and provide all of these things immediately following Katrina, was because we DID have the stock pile of emergency supplies, a plan, and a designated area to house hurricane victims.
The Gov. and major of New Orleans did a tremendous disservice to the people of New Orleans by not evacuating the city in time, and for not having an emergency plan in place. It was chaos. All of us here in Houston watched dumb struck as Katrina approached not understanding why they were not acting. It was horrible.
It was sad that the very people who were victimized by Nagin here in Houston, voted by absentee ballot to keep him in office just a few months later, lured in by his “Keep New Orlean chocolate” campaign slogan. The Federal government was slow to come in due to a lot of problems on the ground around New Orleans, in retrospect the government should have simply pushed these local leaders aside and taken over entirely since neither the mayor, or governor could provide lists of what they needed or HOW MANY people were missing or displaced ect. It is the responsibility of local, and state government to tell the federal government what they need, and what is a priority. Everyone blames the federal government for the disaster of Katrina, but everyone keeps forgetting that it was the lack of leadership locally that created it.

Thanks Common Sense. This tragic disaster has been used time, and time again to bash the federal government under Bush and it is just not accurate. As we speak, thousands of New Orleans citizens still residing here in Houston are still receiving free housing, and food vouchers FOUR years later. I do not know what is happening in, and around New Orleans in the re-building efforts, but if it is being over seen by the same local leaders then sadly, I doubt if anything will come of it.

So while an ignorant person like you wants to demonize conservatives (why h3ll, I’m uh workin’ man.), people with even slightly below average intellect could see that the more government regulation, the more exploitative holes were made for people to jump in and game the system.
So while Bush spent like a crazy man and had some reduction in regulation, Obama is trying to regulate the regulators, and we have nearly 17% effective unemployment.
