Axelrod Challenges GOP on Health Care: ‘Make My Day’

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

The Hill: [White House Senior Adviser David] Axelrod said that the GOP would have to explain why insurance comapnies should once again be able to discriminate against customers on the basis of pre-existing conditions, for example. "Let's have that fight," he said. "Make my day."

NOQTR4TR8RS   March 14th, 2010 - 12:18 pm

“Let’s have that fight,” he said. “Make my day.”

Oh yes, Mr. Axelrod, let’s.

Let’s debate the merits of forcing private insurance companies to cover pre-exiting conditions, while limiting their ability to charge accordingly. It is the equivalent of forcing your auto insurance carrier to sell you a policy, over the phone, when you call from the scene of the accident you just had. Let’s hear you describe how this will not increase costs, and limit access to insurance.

Let’s discuss how you can assert that the cost savings will be tremendous, when the Congressional Budget Office finds that while broadening insurance coverage might lead to less cost shifting, “that effect would probably be relatively small and would not directly produce net savings in national or federal spending on health care.”
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/103xx/doc10311/06-16-HealthReformAndFederalBudget.pdf

Of course there’s little to debate now, since the bill has passed both houses of Congress, and a socialist sits in the White House, ready to sign this unconstitutional law into effect. The debate now should begin to focus on how to repeal the bill in it’s entirety, or in part; how to remove those who authored it and passed it from office; and doing what it takes to get those corrupt individuals who are responsible for it’s passage indicted, convicted, and sentenced.

Shiori   March 14th, 2010 - 12:21 pm

They don’t Mr. Goering. They ‘discriminate’ against consumers who wait until they’re sick before attempting to purchase insurance, rather than buying it before they’re gravely ill, as it was designed. Competition across State lines would eliminate this issue; one company denies you, you move to the next, rather than being held hostage by government rules. It’s a moot point anyway, because no one in this country can be denied medical care whether or not they have the means to pay. That’s why so many illegals come here for expensive treatments and then scoot back over the border without ever paying a dime. It’s why we have State Programs, S-Chip, Medicaid and Medicare, even though you’ve destroyed those programs as well. Illness and death are a fact of life. It is up to the individual to take their own precautions and plan ahead. Anyhoo – we all know that health care coverage is not your true goal. So, crawl back to your dark corner Axelrod.

Maine Coast   March 14th, 2010 - 12:35 pm

Thugs. Nothing but un-Presidential thugs.

Buhlz_I   March 14th, 2010 - 12:44 pm

Did I hear him say that he doesn’t know the plan works but we’ll save a trillion dollars? Hmmmm….Fuzzy math.

The truth Mr. Axelrod, is that you grievance is not with members of congress but, rather, the American people. We have stated overwhelmingly that we DO NOT want government overseeing our health care. What is it about that point that you simply can’t grasp?

Sickofobama   March 14th, 2010 - 12:44 pm

Knowbetter   March 14th, 2010 - 1:03 pm

Let me see if I have been diagnosed with cancer or HIV ,I can make a insurance carrier insure me and bankrupt them in a heartbeat . like getting into a fatal car wreck and the first call I would make is to a ins. co. to up my coverage retroactively. I have been under Gov. Health care my whole life first during my long military career then after words on a space available use at military hospitals (congress elimited that) then a program military /civilian that I had to pay for ,then kicked off that on to Medicare.
each time going down in Quality. By the way I have not used any of that myself in 30 years but my spouse has and now it is a night mare under Medicare. Never trust you Government is all that I have to say they tell you one thing and 1 year later change it when they get a low bidder .

The very worst kind of lie is the one you tell yourself. The democrats are lying to themselves that they can shove this steaming pile of Marxist Obamacare crap in our faces and there won’t be a huge price to pay. It will take some time, but Conservatives will repeal Obamacare if it passes.

The Whitehouse and Dem leaders are playing the old game of we’ve got the votes, we’re just waiting for the cost estimate. They say that because they think the holdouts will think the leadership will win and they’ll be branded the bad boys and lose their house perks and chairmanships. Oh the lies and deceit. @Insurance,Insurance companies do not provide health care, they do not research and develop new technologies or make medical advances. Insurance is simply put, nothing more then a hedge against loss in the event of a catastrophe.

First off, We the Patients have been left out of the negotiation. All I’ve seen are meetings with doctors, lawyers, insurance company’s, pharmaceutical company’s, union bosses, and politicians (who are not affected by this disaster because they have voted themselves premium medical coverage that is not accessible to the rest of us 300 million citizens) Glaringly absent from the negotiation are any private individuals? Why is that?

Washington has forgotten what insurance is. Insurance is nothing more than a hedge against loss in the event of a catastrophe. Insurance companies do not provide health care. They do not develop new technologies or make medical advances. They simply hedge against financial ruin in the event of a major illness or injury. Here’s my thoughts on a starting place for health reform?

1. Care providers should have to post their prices for their services and should not be able to charge a different price depending on who’s paying the bill. Should a gas station charge you a higher price if you’re paying with a company gas card? If providers are forced to disclose prices and compete for your business, price comes down. In some industries “Negotiated Rates” might be referred to as collusion and is illegal. And, if I’m not mistaken there are 31 States with Anti-Price gouging laws in an emergency, why are these laws not applicable in a medical emergency? Why do we accept this from health care providers? 3rd party payer is the root of the problem why prices are so high.

2. Basic care and maintenance like check-ups, doctor visits, etc. should be paid directly by the consumer. If medical care providers have to disclose their prices and consumers are responsible to pay for their own care watch how quickly care costs come down. Look at cosmetic and Lasik surgery and veterinary medicine. Insurance doesn’t cover it so providers must find a way to compete for your business and they do this by either lowering cost or increasing services. And, If insurance companies are not responsible for every medical bill then they will lower their premiums and when individuals pay less in premiums it frees up more money to pay for regular medical care. You don’t expect your homeowners insurance to cover when your dishwasher breaks or plumbing backs up. What would your car insurance premiums be if they had to cover oil changes and tuneups? Premiums come down if insurance is only used as intended.

3. Congress should pass legislation to prohibit the “pre-existing” conditions denial of insurance and return insurance to its original intent which is a hedge against loss in a catastrophic event or illness. Think outside the box on how risk is pooled. Risk pools are arbitrary and need to be completely open in order to spread risk. Instead of mandating everyone must buy coverage, they should mandate that insurers must cover everyone. Insurers play the odds that most people live healthy lives and make money when people pay premiums for long periods of time with no incidents or claims and yes they must pay those claims when they occur but if they are receiving premiums from a huge number of people who don’t get cancer as most don’t or become injured in a fiery crash as most don’t, then they make profits and employ people and the industry contributes to the economy. But insurers don’t need to pay higher prices (“negotiated rates”) charged by care providers because all that does is raise premiums.

4. All insurance should be sold individually and not provided through employers. This way, if you lose your job you don’t lose your insurance. If an employer wants to pay an amount toward your premium as a part of a benefits package that’s between you and them and not mandatory. If you lose your job, you simply lose that employers contribution toward your premium but your next employer may pick it up as part of their benefit’s package again, that’s negotiated between you an that employer.

5. Propose a plan to END medicare and medicaid. These are unsustainable entitlements that hinder fairness and competition and fleece taxpayers out of their earnings for something they will not benefit from. I say do the hard thing now! For seniors who are currently using the system, they should continue to receive these services because they have paid into this system on the promise of receiving benefits. To reduce or remove it from them now is theft and Americans are NOT promise breakers who go back on their word. However we need a plan to phase out medicare and medicaid over a period of time so that we have something better in place by the time the next generation of seniors arrive; Something that better reflects The United States of America not The United Socialist States of America. We are NOT a socialist nation and that has served us well for some 230 years. Why fix what ain’t broken?

6. Any any new bill needs to make absolutely clear that absolutely NO Abortions will be paid for with tax payer dollars. The Bill of Rights – Amendment I – states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…..” One of the ways I “freely exercise” my religion is to not kill babies, If this is true then congress canNOT pass any law forcing me to subsidize with my taxes something that violates my free exercise of my religion, which is to not kill babies.

This a good starting point in any meaningful discussion on real health care reform. Unfortunately, Washington is not interested in the truth or reasoned debate.

I have proposed a People’s Health Care Bill, if you’d like to read it go to my facebook fan page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/We-The-Patients-Peoples-Health-Care-Bill/358436167949?ref=nf

I sure wish they would hurry up and get this heal care mess behind us and move on the auto insurance companies. I have friends that must be poor because they are on the government dole, (their house is better than mine and they get food stamps), but still, they have had 2 or 3 accidents and a DUI. Do you have any idea how much they have to pay for auto insurance? The auto insurance companies made more profit than health insurers! This is outrageous. One was even threatened to have his license taken away. Driving is a right in this country! How they going to go buy their dope and booze and mooch off their parents? Talk about killing the economy. Pretty stupid argument isn’t it?

There is NO question in anyone’s mind that Health Care reform is needed in my ways but the truth is Obamacare is NOT the right solution in my opinion. Oh BTW, the majority of the American people agree with that sentiment, however much Adolf Axelrod hates to be reminded of those fact(s). David Axelrod is a liberal henchman who has been deluded into believing that Socialism is good for America and will stop at NOTHING to try and turn the United States of America inside out and outside down, and in the process, drain the “pocketbooks” of the American people “bone dry” and creating red ink as far as the eye can see and beyond; and in which will essentially “destroy” America as we know it – even as free world Democracies across the globe look on in horror and dismay at what Obama and his henchmen are trying to get away with.

Obamacare is NOT good for America and the majority of Americans DON’T WANT IT!! It is a multi-trillion dollar “boondoggle” that will “enslave” future generations with not only severely “rationed” care, based on Government decision(s) of who gets to live or who gets to die essentially, but it will also create even MORE MASSIVE DEBT and thereby strapping an unsustainable financial burden around the necks of our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, ad infinitum.. to try and somehow pay back. Axelrod is saying “how can you in good conscience deny care and coverage to people with pre-existing conditions?” When in reality, “MEDICARE” has the HIGHEST rate of ANY insurance company for “DENYING” people the medical care and services they so desperately need! MEDICARE!!! Not Anthem Blue Cross, not Aetna, not Kaiser Permanente or any of the other privately held insurance companies! MEDICARE!!! And then David Axelrod has the gall to go on Live TV, and unabashedly, tries to instill “guilt” onto the American people by trying to paint the ‘best’ Health Care System in the WORLD as somehow only “evil” and only out for profit(s)?!?! HAVE YOU NO SHAME AXELROD?!?!?!

Sure, I wholeheartedly agree that there needs to be “constructive” reform within the Health Care industry, including private sector Health Insurance companies, but to point the finger and deceptively “demonize” private insurance companies to try and pass your bosses MONSTROSITY is shear, underhanded chicanery and even unconscionable David Axelrod! And Democrats are going to PAY BIG TIME at the polls for this their perceived chicanery and for tromping on the rights and freedoms of the American people and for going against the will of the “majority” of its citizens! And I, for one, can’t wait to be an integral part of booting their numerous lame “butts” out of office and into the unemployment line(s) that Obama and his cohorts have put millions and millions of Americans into over the last year since Obummer “slid” into the Oval Office.

The economy is in the “toilet” and all Obama and Axelrod and his other cohorts can think of is trying to pass this Health Care MONSTROSITY of a bill that NOBODY (but the welfare crowd it seems) even wants! And it is utterly despicable the way Obama, Harry Reid, Nanny Pelosi, Rahm ‘dead fish’ Emanuel, David Axelrod and other liberal Democrats are going about it by literally trying to shove it down the throats of the American people in a wickedly and bitterly “partisan” back door, closed door, bribe filled, wicked manner. And Obamacare deserves to be defeated because of it and the fact that it’s a convoluted piece of junk.

SanFranciscoGo   March 14th, 2010 - 3:07 pm

Everyone knows that a “cap” should be in place for torts along with competition
across state lines for insurance companies, insurance rates rate would drop like a rock.

Perhaps the real cap that Mr. Axelrod is considering, is his own, the one that upon which he wishes
to place a feather of Tyranny.

CP   March 14th, 2010 - 3:15 pm

Barney Miller? This guy’s old company is an Astroturf firm. Helped Michelle Obama’s University of Chicago Hospital turn away less profitable patients without private insurance, then made Chicago feel good about it.

BenDejo   March 14th, 2010 - 3:21 pm

The hate these people seem to have for capitalism is atounding. Who, as an insurer in their right mind, is not going to at least raise the rates, for everyone else they insure, to cover the abusive hits they’re going to endure by those who are allowed to insure themselves post facto. But then destroying the industry, by any means possible, is what the plan is.

Dan   March 14th, 2010 - 3:29 pm

They probably will pass this healthcare package, but most Americans know it is nothing more than a chance for this marxist Obama government to control one sixth of the American econmomy and then to proceed with other policies more fitting of Joe stalin than the U.S. But the voters will bring these communists to their knees in November and then throw out the Muslim in chief Obama in 2012.

Any of you who have been frog gigging know that when you first gig a big one there is sound of air escaping from the frog..sounds a little like air escaping from a punctured tire. “why insurance comapnies should once again be able to discriminate against customers on the basis of pre-existing conditions”

I’ll have that debate right now Axelrod. Insurance is a means of indemnity against a future occurrence of an uncertain event. A pre-exisiting condition is not an uncertain event. Am I saying a person with a PEC doesn’t need help? NO, but they shouldn’t expect jumping into an insurance policy *after the fact* will help them with anything.

Let’s try the car insurance example Obama loves so much: do you expect an insurance company to cover damages to your car if you get the insurance *after* the accident? Do you expect your rates to be low? What about getting home insurance *after* a fire? Yet you expect health insurance cmpanies to completely care for a person without insurance after they get cancer, get an MRI or break their arm?
