“Well, this healthcare thing has really gotten toxic. If even the People’s Republic of Massachusetts doesn’t like it, it must be *really* out of the mainstream. Passing this would be disastrous for midterm elections. Let’s get this thing passed!”
This makes no sense. The real reasoning is closer to:
“It took years to build a big enough majority to get a chance at this healthcare, mostly because the Republicans stumbled on some of their base’s demands for small government. Can’t expect that to happen again any time soon (although we can always hope). We’ve made zillions of promises to just about every special interest under the sun to get where we are, and they want payback not excuses.”
Apparently displeasing the special interests is scarier to Democrats than the electorate. Not entirely irrational: losing an election means getting a pension, losing favor with the wrong set of goons can be hazardous to one’s health.
