Announcer Apologizes for Cracking ‘Taco’ Joke About Colombian NASCAR Driver

TMZ: During the Ohio State/Minnesota game, the NASCAR promotion turned nasty when broadcaster Chris Spielman asked where Colombian NASCAR driver Juan Pablo was in the standings ... then Bob Griese let this gem fly: "He's out having a taco."

At the end of the game, Griese issued a bland apology, saying, "Juan Pablo Montoya, he's one of the best drivers in NASCAR, I just want to apologize for the comment that I made earlier in the ballgame."

Seriously people…Can we just stop being so sensitive and laugh a little. Just because one makes an ethnic joke, done not make one a racist!

LibertyLakeRD,

You said it!!! Stuff like this would’ve been on the Jackie Gleason Show in prime time, when I was growing up!

DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH   October 26th, 2009 - 4:38 am

This country is going down the tubes! I’m sure LA RAZA got hold of ABC and demanded an apology.

Irish,Italian,Polish jokes, etc. were very common years ago. Somehow we survived and thrived, WITHOUT sensitivity training.

* Just-Back from The Taco Run…. who’s Hungy-Gang?

Hey…. Pedro… break-out the Hot Sauce, would’yuh? :oP

troutabout   October 26th, 2009 - 6:56 am

He wasn’t out for a taco (although he should have been) – he was out from playing tag-o. And bad decisions on when to pit. You bump too many like Biffle and Juan have and all of a sudden it’s harder to get past everyone. No matter how efite and elite you think you are.

dontflagmebro   October 26th, 2009 - 7:50 am

He should be fired over this. Country already on the verge of race riots.

Mesndblues   October 26th, 2009 - 8:06 am

So if you’re speaking about say, a Italian person, we’re not supposed to associate Italian food with them?? If we are talking about a Australian, it is insensitive to say somthing about “shrimp on the barby”??? In all honesty, the people who are offended by this, whether they be hispanic or not, are only giving their name and heritage a black eye..Italians are proud of the their food, Australians have no problem with bbq’ed shrimp..but taco’s….oh my…those are MEXICAN! I was watching the Olympics a few years ago, a doubles diving competition…after the Mexican team jumped, the announcer said, “and the Mexicans gets a 9.5…”….I thought to myself…that sounds terrible,..but then I realized it wasn’t at all, it sounded “wrong” because we have been conditioned to react that way….They bring that on themselves..

Mesndblues   October 26th, 2009 - 8:10 am

ok, it wasn’t a 9.5….it was a 4.0 but I didn’t want to offend any hispanics. See? Causing me to all lie and stuff..

CommonSense   October 26th, 2009 - 9:12 am

Rush Limbaugh said that there were elitist left leaning types in Sports Announcing. I guess he was right about that. After all we know the real racists are the Left Leaning folks who think it appropriate to keep people segregated into classes.

You miss the point. Yes, the joke was actually funny and I’m sure not intended as racist or derogatory beyond the context of the moment when made by the announcer. No apology should have been necessary. But if you’re going to make an ethnic joke, then make the joke specific to the ethnic group or nationality.

What the devil does “hispanic” actually mean? There’s no such thing as hispanic heritage or ethnicity. The dude, Juan Pablo is Colombian. Tacos are as much Colombian as Pizza is Korean. There are half a billion people living in Central & South America, many are direct decedents of Europeans (Spanish, Italian, German, etc) many more of other decent, e.g. China, Japan, India. Included in that number or millions of pure indigenous origin or mixed races, e.g. Mulatto & Mestizo. To clump them all together into a single category is none sense. The differences in culture, customs and even language are staggering. An American has more in common with a Canadian than a Mexican has from a Colombian. To deny or argue against that is to demonstrate a phenomenal degree of ignorance.

So rather than having said, “he’s out eating a Taco”, he could have said, “he’s busy drinking agua ardiente” or Colombia’s version of moonshine… which any Colombian will agree, is the national drink (at least in jest)… and would actually be funny being that he’s a professional driver.

I heard he was out drinking beer and beating his wife.

Just a Point   October 26th, 2009 - 10:19 am

Maybe he was out smoking a little Columbian.
Not all Spanish speaking people eat tacos but they could smoke a little Columbian.

Farnsworth   October 26th, 2009 - 10:22 am

Just a Point: now that’s funny! And broadly speaking, ethnically correct, LOL

Tyler P   October 26th, 2009 - 10:40 am

So stupid. What if he WAS out having a taco? Would he have to apologize for his apology then?

RobbieK   October 26th, 2009 - 10:59 am

Seriously, give me a break! Political correctness is dead and good riddance.

RobbieK   October 26th, 2009 - 11:03 am

I see the guy who has posted the YouTube video has done a White House and totally squelched our 1st Amendment rights by moderating comments and stating such.

Micky Dees   October 26th, 2009 - 11:18 am

Actually Montoya has a penchant for Big Macs, which is why he fits in a Nascar and not an F1 car. Oops, I apologize to all the Nascars out there as Im sure there are lots of Nascars that are as petite as F1 cars…………..

Ron Geene   October 26th, 2009 - 12:40 pm

Oh my God someone mentioned a hispanic and a taco in the same sentence that’s an out rage and we should cut his cilantro off.
Democrats want hispanics on the same plantation where they keep black people. Hispanics are too smart for that stupid devisive nonsense.

R.J.   October 26th, 2009 - 1:47 pm

KLU KLUX KLAN don’t allow comments that expose them, only their bigot members get to yuck it up. You can make fun of Hispanics, but don’t make fun of their white women, even though they don’t let them drive. Promoting bigotry is just more proof, breitbart isn’t news, it’s just a haven for the small minded.

allan1776   October 26th, 2009 - 2:04 pm

Jimmy Johnson has been smoking that Columbian all season long.

AVN   October 26th, 2009 - 2:10 pm

Do Colombians eat tacos? I don’t think that’s a Colombian dish – I think it’s Mexican.

rovers   October 27th, 2009 - 7:41 am

I though Gieses remark was somewhat humorous actually. Giese been around for a long time. I would believe in global warming before I would believe Griese would intentionally demean another athlete publicly.

To suspend anyone for such a remark is truly pathetic. No harm no foul.

H2K   October 27th, 2009 - 10:28 am

I had a taco for lunch yesterday. Tasty, too. Fresh.
However, I would highly insulted if someone made fun of me for eating an American hotdog. I should be insulted, right?

zucccchini   November 2nd, 2009 - 10:01 pm

Yeah, I went out for apple pie because I am an American. I’m proud of Mom’s apple pie AND America! I watch NASCAR too! Go ahead and imply something there. It does not offend me either. Only way that would offend is if I care what someone thought. I do not. Seems like the do-gooders ALWAYS over-correct. They seem to go way overboard to correct what they ‘think’ is wrong. In the old days a mob mentality would form and they would run out, get a rope and hang anyone even accused of whatever. Now its a psychological mob daring you to even imply something ‘they’ deem is wrong. You are hung because no one stands up to that nonsense. Its the thought police.
