Don’t worry man, you’re a hero, you’ll be fine. What won’t be fine when word gets out is that garbage company you used to work for, I will NEVER go to pizza slut again until they right that wrong. Maybe the HR and executive honchos should be forced to deliver pizzas in that neighborhood, without their usual cadre of bodyguards. I am sending them a not so nice letter to protest their actions, would pizza slut be more “comfortable” if the driver took a slug in the head?.

TomBrooklyn   April 22nd, 2008 - 8:53 am

Unless Pizza Hut offers James Spears his job back, I’ll be reluctant to ever buy anything from them again.

pm   April 22nd, 2008 - 9:36 am

I hope that pizza hut would not prefer a dead driver over what happened. The man had a right to defend himself, Maybe pizza hut should have all drives get the concealed weapons permit. It sure would deter the common theft crimes and sometimes murders of pizza delivery persons. I dont like pizza hut’s stance northe pizza they make.

Dayum Skippy   April 22nd, 2008 - 11:08 am

Bravo for James Spears and shame on Pizza Hut and their parent company YUM brands. I for one will be boycotting Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell, A&W, and Long John Silvers.

The latest news is that they fired the driver. I hope that some employer in Des Moines hires this guy quickly.

Call the Pizza Hut Franchise that employed this guy directly at 515-285-3500 and voice your outrage.

DB   April 22nd, 2008 - 11:33 am

I suggest we all flood Pizza Hut with emails – go to their “Contact Us” page : http://www.pizzahut.com/contactus/contactlanding.aspx . Tell them that we support the driver and think that all their drivers have the right to protect themselves and, if the driver has a concealed weapons permit, he/she has a constitutional right to carry a weapon. But remember, they have currently only suspended him pending further investigation, which probably is understandable. We need to let them know that we support James’ actions.

Die for Pizza hut wages?????

Dude, you did the right thing!

Frank in Dothan, AL   April 22nd, 2008 - 4:49 pm

Pizza hut needs to do right by the employee.

Klatuu   April 22nd, 2008 - 5:56 pm

Pizza Hut wants their delivery drivers and wait staff to be easy targets for the scum of the earth. Through their corporate actions they have helped my family and I decide to never again darken the door of pizza slut.

Jeff   April 22nd, 2008 - 6:43 pm

Most delivery drivers carry a maximum of $20 to $50. His actions could have easily killed a man over meager pocket change. He should have given him the money if he actually felt this was a threat, and gone away to turn this to the proper authorities (and the criminal would have been easily identified, as Pizza Hut has his name, phone number, and address). No reasonable employer would keep a person on staff who attempted to murder someone, especially for something so trivial. I delivered pizzas for four or five years. Sure, there are scary situations, but there is no situation where I would try kill someone who tried to get my pocket full of one and five dollar bills.

I’ve heard the same stories about other businesses and I still do not agree with their policys. And I too, would challenge all upper management to follow in their employee’s footsteps. However, we all know “that ain’t gonna happen.” Having said that, I would seriously suggest that the young man look elsewhere for employment—hopefully, where he will be appreciated.

Allow me to ‘translate’ that stupid sign we’ve all seen: “ATTENTION ALL THUGS, ROBBERS, RAPISTS AND MURDERERS! Come and help yourself to our cash, have your way with our staff and customers! We have rendered them helpless for your convenience!”

These people do not deserve our business. I would like to see all these businesses, and the officers of these companies, photoed and ID’d and put up on a website, as enablers, as accomplices, conspiring against the law-abiding citizens, & as posing a threat to society. There aughta be a law…

Jeff

Maybe James really feared for his life at that particular moment. James was facing a gun held by someone he didn’t know. What would happen in the next few seconds. A little empathy and understanding goes a long way.

aelfheld   April 23rd, 2008 - 3:11 am

Dude, if Jimmerson had died, Spears wouldn’t have ‘killed a man over meager pocket change’, he would have been defending himself from someone who evidently would have killed him for ‘meager pocket change’. Pizza Hut didn’t have Jimmerson’s name and phone number – they had his girlfriend’s, and any one with half a brain knows she would have lied through her teeth.

Spears did the right thing; Pizza Hut is wrong; and Jimmerson got off better than he deserved.

Jen   April 23rd, 2008 - 3:17 am

Good for him! I feel bad for him, he’s clearly upset by the whole ordeal. But at least he’s alive, no thanks to Pizza Hut’s “policy.” Kinda like the 7-11 policy of telling cashiers not to resist a robber…. well look how many of those non-resisters are shot during the robberies!

He clearly understands that PH has the right to not employ him if he chooses to carry a gun for self-defense. And we have the right to vote with our wallets and refuse to patronize Pizza Hut.

binky   April 23rd, 2008 - 3:55 am

How about when you put a gun in a mans face and tell him you will kill him if he doesnt do what you want you will kill him, then all bets are off. If some peice of filth wants to threaten your life, then you are doing the community a service by defending yourself.

Rick   April 23rd, 2008 - 4:10 am

Jeff,

What’s worse? Killing someone over $20 or someone killing you over $20?

Personally, I’d rather have the right to defend myself at any cost.

Edward McCain   April 23rd, 2008 - 6:22 am

Jeff, You’re an asshat.
A good friend of mine was killed by some crackhead in a situation just like the one James was in.
Someone attempts to rob you, defend yourself.

commenter   April 23rd, 2008 - 12:28 pm

It’s Pizza Hut man. It’s FAST FOOD. There are much better jobs out there.

JimmyRay   April 23rd, 2008 - 2:08 pm

Jeff,
Having been a driver, as well as a manager for Pizza Hut, I heard more stories of drivers getting shot because they “only had” $20-$50 on them and the drug crazed idiot didn’t believe them. James is a hero, he deserves respect, not an unemployment check.

bob   April 23rd, 2008 - 4:02 pm

you did what i wanted to do, i was robbed years ago, if i were more prepared i wouldve send that moron to god.

dna frequency   April 23rd, 2008 - 6:29 pm

I didn’t eat their trash anyway but do give them a call and let them know what you think of their unjust and unAmerican policy. Everyone has the right to defend their life.

Jeff, give me a break, you would face the possibility of getting shot by some sociopath with a gun pointed at you rather than defend yourself with a registered pistol. You really think that its about the money and not about the possibility of getting shot. There has been innumerable times where people have been shot and/or killed after they have been robbed. Your advice is ridiculous.

Josh   April 24th, 2008 - 8:18 am

God, imagine if the robber was black.

Bren Wilsom   April 24th, 2008 - 8:35 am

over here in australia that poor guy would have got 10+years in jail even if he did not die.
If he died then he would be facing life in prison for defending himself.

Attack or be attacked i say, and to hell with the laws and policy. Pretty hard to enforce it when some scumbag has a gun in your face.

JEFF, Here is what you said “No reasonable employer would keep a person on staff who attempted to murder someone…” THIS WAS NOT MURDER. THIS WAS SELF DEFENSE. Please go to the dictionary and look up the meaning of murder. EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THEMSELVES IF THEY ARE IN FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES OR THE LIVES OF OTHERS. EACH PERSON HAS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS.
