[...] Check it out! While looking through the blogosphere we stumbled on an interesting post today. Here’s a quick excerptliverail_video_cffdb83fe222b295b538(”1″, “1″, “1″, 450, 382); [...]
They didn’t even try to take him down before resorting to tasering thats not cool.
Thank the powers that be that these officers were willing to step in to protect the traveling public. They had to know that they would be tormented by bleeding-hearts who would invent some excuse to call this crazy person (remember no drugs or booze in him) a poor victim. Can I be Tasered for suggesting that people, even in Canada, are solely responsible for the results of their behavior? If the victim-pimps object to the use of Tasers to defend both officers and the public, we could always revert back to 45 caliber lead bullets.
Boy, you Canadians are crazier than us here in the U.S. I remember a nut hitting my wife (and many others) while she was waiting for me to pick her up from work. After I arrived, I chased him down with two cops, tackled him and the cops beat him some (face to the pavement), hussled him into a car, and it was over. We didn’t even think of KILLING him.
John in D.C
Ok, I am no bleeding heart liberal and I do not hate law enforcement. But this is pure bollocks anymore. Any one can see the dangers of tasers. These cops are not doctors, yet are charged with risking someone’s life with the use of a lethal device that has proven to be lethal to a significant number of people over the years. Tasers need to be banned or reduced in power. There is NO fricken excuse for these deaths.
So let me get this straight, it is ok with many people that a man died from a taser because he was maybe not in the best of mental health? What would you say if it was you in that position or someone you know or love? How did pigs subdue people before taser guns? They would not have shot the man, saying the pigs personal safety was in question is nuts, there were many more pigs than unstable person. The taser has made pigs lazy, they now no longer protect and serve but tase and blame others.
I personally think any pig willing to tase another human should be tased 100 times for every time they zapped the other person. Maybe that will get them to learn to solve problems the way they had to before those deadly weapons. The pigs were not protecting the public, they were showing who had the biggest d@#$! well karma is a b!
We are using 9/11 as an excuse for far too much! sure there are things that should be done but treating everyone as a terrorist only makes things worse!
Unfortunately, these officer’s behavior shows their lack of education of signs and symptoms commonly seen sometimes in psychotic individuals when having an acute episode. Granted restraint was necessary at some point in all of this, the destruction of property and the lack of compliance does not always warrant the response and certainly not this final result. The lack of total scene assessment and subsequent rush to inappropriate action (knee in the back of the neck) show their the lack of information about the mentally ill. Proper assessment would have isolated and sought a translator intervention at a distance safe to all. If deescalation was not possible, techniques used to manage assaultive behavior without risking harm to self or assaultive person could have been brought into the scenario. At no point in any training can I imagine, that a knee to the airway is taught or endorsed by a law enforcement agency or contracted security firm. This man’s family ought to seek a major lawsuit against this agency with a stipulation that a program of education be taught to all further staff about exacerbated psychosis in people. What if this person was deaf or blind, would it have made this failure of intervention OK with the rest of society? As an officer, you expected to face some risk in the course of your job. Do we not expect our officers to make the correct calls, and if not buy time for someone that can make the calls on situations? Let it be known, that we’re all one head injury away from a world filled with perpetual delusion, hallucination, and disoriented behavior that could be misunderstood as consciously intended by the rest of society. Let it be known, that even our elders can become confused and act out violently, and far more often than not, against the ones that love and care for them the most. Further let it be known, people receiving corticosteroids for treatments of disorders and diseases can have unpredictable, disorganized, detached, and incoherent, responses similar to what is seen here. These responses, as in acute psychosis, often have no noticeable escalation or remarkable contributing factors. The need for recognition of mentally ill and the appropriate understanding of isolation, response, and deescalation techniques is something that clearly warranted in this scenario. Sadly, this gentleman paid with his life and a mother is without her son tonight. No matter how ill or socially unacceptable his behavior might be, I am sure she still loved him. And to all, what if this was you or someone you knew?
Don’t Taze Me to Death, Bro!
Ridiculous. Cops have become so pussified. Just tackle the guy. If we wanted cops to just shoot people and kill them, we would just hire common thugs and pay them much less. You have special training – use it.
Citizens lives are worth more than material crap. I’m tired of mentally ill people getting killed at airports. Mental illness is covered by the ADA in America – cops are killing disabled people and nobody cares.
so what are cops supposed to do? you complain if a nut hurts you but they risk thier lives everday to protect society. he was agressive and potentially dangerous. I worked with lunatics and one actaully gouged his own mothers eyes out in a psychosis. too bad but this man asked for it and think of the $$ society saves in caring for him in his useless state. he has nothing to give to society so really, why bother throwing $ at it. I belive in eugenics, the unfit have no use in society and waste precious resources. I applaud the cops actions!
Have you ever tackled a raging lunatic? It isn’t fun and it is extremely dangerous. The taser did not kill this person. At the beginning of this video you can see the subject breathing hard and sweating for no apparent reason. It is obvious this person is in medical distress. The only thing that could have saved his life was for him to surrender without getting his heart even more worked up and for the Officers to get him to medical assistance. Had they tackled him, the result would have been the same. His heart blew. That’s simply the case. No drugs found in his system? Adrenalin is the most powerful drug in the world and it is obvious that he had a ton of it flowing through his deranged body. It’s sad when a mentally ill person dies but the police had to do something. To prevent others from getting hurt, and property from getting destroyed, they had to do it like they did. Thank g-d for the cops that protect us. Sometimes they do all they can but people still get hurt. The guy wasn’t going to surrender and cops shouldn’t wait around until someone gets hurt. Tell your mentally ill friends to take their medications.
The Taser doesn’t kill someone. Its the medical condition of the person getting tasered that kills them. Usually a heart attack due to their already high stress level, and then being tasered is what kills them. The news report conveniently leaves out what the autopsy report shows as cause of death. They only say the report showed he didn’t have drugs in his system, not what the cause of death was. It probably showed it was heart failure. Tasers are used so that the Officers do not have to fight someone and get injured or injure the suspect. Incidents involving death when a taser is used are very rare compared to the thousands of times they are used everyday. If they fought him to the ground without the taser it probably would have been the same result. Quit second guessing someone if you don’t know the facts, or are to lazy to research it.
So CK – police can kill a man who clearly doesn’t speak English just because he broke a computer? Riiiiight….
DJ – “…bleeding-hearts who would invent some excuse to call this crazy person… a poor victim.” Wtf? Which vid did you watch man and what country are you from? Wait lemmie guess…
Needless to say you both win “I’m a dumb*ss” awards for your middle-school level comments regarding this vid.
PEOPLE, THE VID CLEARLY STATES THAT THIS POLISH MAN WAS IN THAT HOLDING AREA FOR OVER 10 HOURS WITH NO ONE (i.e. translator) TO EXPLAIN THE NATURE OF HIS DETAINMENT. So all this talk of him being crazy, etc, is just BS. He simply seems pissed off and rightly so, and eventually threw a small tantrum. I’m sure most of us would be supremely pissed too, if we arrived at a foreign country and were held indefinitely with no explanation and offered no translation…
Enter a few less than adept & overzealous security/police personnel (with no translator of course), and you’ve got one dead foreigner. All should be suspended and/or ultimately fired for such a dismal demonstration of situational mitigation and absolute failure to follow protocol. What a bunch of fools. They of course win “I’m a dumb*ss” awards as well, for MURDER….
Superior, TruthBeKnown, and Rob811 you win too.
It wasn’t the fact that they tasered him, it’s the fact they didn’t try to communicate with him effectively (less than 1 min) before doing so…
Nobody murders like the police. All of these ratbags need to go to jail for 10 years and think about why they killed a man who was not a threat to them.
Rob811 says: If they fought him to the ground without the taser it probably would have been the same result. Quit second guessing someone if you don’t know the facts, or are to lazy to research it.
So Rob, what would you say the probability is that an unarmed person would die from being restrained by 4 police officers (not using Tasers)? Got any references to back that up? Or would that be wishful speculation?
Now that Canadians have oil wealth they also have arrogance.
The guys didn’t even speak English!
How can a citizen obey a lawful order if he can’t understand it. Kick me if I’m stupid.
Four cops using overwhelming force and still putting his knee on the guys neck? This is clearly use of deadly force as the neck contain arteries going directly to the brain.
The taser is just a diversion to the serious felonious assault by cowboy cops.
All Canadians should be ashamed for condoning this clear case of murder. We need an international investigation into this summary execution by the RCMP.
The only sickening thing about this video is the mealy-mouthed, whiny, commentator evoking sympathy for this person. Another fine example of the leftist mindset infecting the media and your country. You want the government to coddle and cradle everyone for their entire lives but you don’t want to see the government actually have to enforce or protect. Unbelieveable.
They media titles this clip “Police taser man to death” and it’s that’s wrong. The police don’t taser anyone to death. “Disturbed airport passenger dies from tasering by police.” Slow news day? Why must the news media stir the pot? These officers where doing their jobs. The man was beligerent and throwing things. I’m 6′ 250 and I wouldn’t have tried to take him down either, risking injury to myself and the suspect. The taser is an excellent law enforcement tool and the risks of someone going into cardiac arrest from tasering is very small and when weighed against other risks. It is justified by objective reasonableness. What would someone else do in the same situation? the officer’s reaction to the suspects actions and the percieved risk. Thanks, officers for keeping us safe.
Sad all around. The cops didnt go to work that day hoping to kill somebody. They were responding to a call for help of a deranged man. If it turns out the knee killed him this tape should be used in police training around the world of what not to do. Watch the airway at all times!
It seems the takeing down of the man killed him and not the tasering. Tasering is suppossed to be the humane way to stop people. I wonder how many people are saved now that the police dont have to hit you with a billy club to bring you down?
Send Us Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses…
So we can Taser them to death at the airport.
WTF!?!?!
Police State!
Yeah, right, that guy was a big threat to do something dangerous… NO..
Sad..
Why does the pinhead anchorman blame the police? The guy is throwing computers, creating a transportation nightmare for travelers, and is obviously a danger to everyone! I say protect the public. The police did not want to kill him, but he created the situation and I am glad the police officers were not hurt.
According to the “Journalist,” The authorities should have shut-down the airport, re-routed all incoming flights, searched all of BC for a licensed interpereter that speaks kazxanese, brought him to the airport, and used him (the interpereter) to ask the man why he was being “unruly.” Is that really so unreasonable?
Thank God for the Journalists! They do nothing themselves. but they make sure we all know how we’re supposed to feel when ANYTHING happens!
This guy was in the holding area for 10 hours?
What… did Canada’s only translator have to fly in from somewhere? The police did what they knew how to do but I didn’t see much attention paid by them to the whole situation. I thought Canada was a kinder and gentler country. Perhaps…just not well-trained
Did I miss why he was stuck there for 10 hours? he seemed like a suspected terrorist? Are we taking security too far? He was scary to be sure, but I know how I feel during a regualar airport delay. Frustration must have been huge, obviously he had some mental issues going on-Cops should have spent more than 29 seconds communicating with him for gods sake. raises a good point though-how do you communicate with someone when language is not an option?
Someone made the comment that cops are turning into bullies, and tasers keep them from injuring themselves and suspects. Well, Violence is part of the job. They applied to be cops,no one made them do this.4 guys, 4 fit young guys and the just zap him like the bullies they are.
goes roun comes roun. Should have subdues him, use the training they get while learning to be “peace officers.”
Absolutely disgraceful.
Full tasering video, with better quality:
those canadians are a bunch of trigger-happy imperialist cowboys!!!!

I am a bit disappointed, the reporter clearly missed at least one opportunity to slant this story, even more than he was already doing, against the security cops…
It was clearly an accident, the dude was asking for it for 10 hours. The outcome although unfortunate and tragic was not the cops’ fault but the nut job on the ground’s.
*
lets just go back to clubbing suspects.
I see the actions of the police are just fine with most of you here. That’s because you didn’t know the crazy guy, so his life is worthless to you. What the heck, taser him senseless, put your knee on his neck forever, chop him into a thousand pieces and throw them to the vultures. Who cares, right? But what if it’s someone you know next time. A loved one. What if your father had Alzheimer’s and got confused and agitated in an airport. Would you like to see him murdered because the police were clueless, heartless robots? Support this kind of thing now, and next time it may be your loved one. Or it might be YOU. The police state is here, and most of you are just bending over and saying “do me next! do me next!”
These officers should be imprisoned on Murder charges, and the use of Tasers should cease immediately. We made it all the way to the 21st century without tasers and our society seems to have become even worse since the advent of taser use. I would see this as concrete evidence that allowing uneducated citizens such as patrol officers the use of a deadly weapon under the guise of humane has gone horribly awry.
This guy was in holding for over 10 hours. Had I been detained that long, I’d be in the same mental state as he was, if not 100X worse.
There was obviously a breakdown here. No one was able to communicate with him. No one knew what he was saying. The guy lost it – as many of us here would have – and the RCMP killed him in an overzealous apprehension.
This proves that officers are not equiped with the education necessary to prevent this type of event. It is obvious to me that the officer who pinned his neck with his knee is guilty of manslaughter. Had he not “choked” this man, he would still be alive. And shame on BC and the airport for not providing a translator in this situation. The man had been contained for 10 hours! I would seem irrational in that situation as well.
I sometimes get upset at airports too. Yet I don’t slam computers on the floor and fight with police. For all you people that think the police acted wrongly should be put on a flight with this guy and made to sit next to him. Again the leftist media calls this guy a victim. What if he pulled a knife and killed one of the police. The media would call it justifiable homicide and the lunitic was defending himself.
Cops get some weird pleasure out of pushing people past their limits and now they have a nice clean way to eliminate problem citizens. I’m glad the guy went down fighting and I hope the family sues and wins. This is the new world order.
the problem hear is more than one thing the airport had no way to comunicate to this man
the cops are just ignorant bufoons not only do they over tase him but I wonder if they suffocate him, they lack training and self restraint not all people when tased become calm
some will panic say for their LIFE…
once again we see more reason not to use airlines drive if you can.
Wow, I thought Canadians were beyond this type of behavior. Tsk Tsk…..What a shame, you Canadians are so violent in your response to an obviously disabled gentleman, where is the superior Canadian wit and intelligence. Tsk Tsk…what a shame
Common people all over the world does not understand nor knows how to recognize abnormal Psychiatric behavior such as common disorder ADHD and Bi-polar. This man appears to me has some sort of disorder. It could have been handled better if law enforcement in every country receives proper traininig on how to handle this kind of behavior, especially a non-weapon suspect encountered.
If a tazer has the potential to kill then maybe police officers should try a little old physical force to detain someone rather than killing someone. After all don’t police learn how to physically detain suspects.
theres nothing wrong with the taser part. its the officer that had his knee on the neck. clearly he suffocated him you could tell by his body motions. this guy used unreasonable force he should have withdrew his knee when the subject was restrained. therefore this guy needs to be brought up on murder charges. tell the airport what youu think.http://www.yvr.ca/contact.asp
Hopefully the Canadian Police Officers will be brought up on charges by local and international law enforcement agencies. This is an obvious violation of this man’s rights. The police state is alive and thriving in Canada. Boycott all Canadian products until they start acting more civilized and less like savages.
sizzle, crack, pop. one less misfit. funny how the media is so quick to imply that the cops are at fault.
You people who don’t like what the cops did can go pound sand. Some people have died from a Taser application, but they had other problems that contributed to their deaths. NOT A SINGLE *NORMAL* PERSON has died from a Taser.
The guy was a raving freakshow. From the reports, the guy was a danger to himself and the cops. I applaud the cops for what they did, and under the same circumstances they should do it again. And again. And again.
If you don’t like what happened, you’re an anti-social loser seeking to reduce Law Enforcement’s power so you can get away with your own antisocial behavior.
The cops strangled him to death. Then they made no attempt to save his life. Sickening.
I’m glad destruction of property warrents the murder of an obviously disturbed man.
I love how people say in these situations that they deserved it, but I wonder how THEY would react if a taser gun was pointed in their face for no reason.
I’m sure some of you would submit very easily because you’re nothing but sheep. “Whatever you say, Mr. Goverment! Can I blow the president too?”
First of all, I am a 20 plus year police veteran. I’ve been sitting at home for the past three years with severe back injuries caused by a drunken, mentally imbalanced suspect. This on-duty injury has caused me to lose my career and all I have to show for it is constant pain and a fused back.
Having said this, I must say I am appalled by the actions of these officers. This man was unarmed and non-confrontational. He was upset and emotional, but trying to walk away. There were enough officers to swarm him and safely conduct him to the ground and cuff him without injury.
WHY was this man held for over 10 hours to start with? I think anyone HELD for 10 hours would be MAD AS HELL. And then – its obvious from this video, the officer with the knee on the mans neck – killed him. Accidentally or not. This is poor judgement at best – these cops need put on trial. And no I won’t pound sand – I support the police and our troops and am a veteran myself – this however was just plain stupid and wrong.
Man if this happened in the USA everyone outside of the US would be like OMG!!!! US POLICE STATE!!! WE KNEW IT!!!!
It’s so funny talking to Europeans… many of them honestly think we live in a police state like Nazi Germany!
Amazing, Vancouver, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, (as defined by having more people living there that were born in another country), in their major airport, that after 10 hours of this person being held that no one could be found to speak with him???
Captain Kirk: Phasers on stun.
Scotty: That phaser is set to kill!
Sulu: Can I give him mouth-to-mouth now?
Sue – I assure you I am not an anti-social loser endorsing anti-social behavior. I am a decorated war veteran to say the least. Your approval of the murder of a man for no good reason (remember, he was already confined for over 10 hours for no good reason at the airport) is sickening. Your demand that this be approved of, in support of the police, is psychotic at best. I would question – exactly how would you behave if you were HELD for 10 hours, no one spoke your language, no one helped you. You too might throw a computer to the ground in outrage – and for that, he was tasered?
You too would scream and writhe on the ground – I would bet everything I have that you would. AND this is grounds to KILL him? You are misguided at best.
Another classic case of NOT LISTENING. One poster said “The taser did not kill this person. At the beginning of this video you can see the subject breathing hard and sweating for no apparent reason. It is obvious this person is in medical distress.”
Dude… he had been in a detention for over 10 freaking hours. You too would be pissed, and breathing hard, and mad as hell. And no, you’re right, the taser did NOT kill him – the KNEE ON THE TRACHEA DID! Duh…
Murder.
No attempt to communicate, immediate use of taser over and over and over again. Knee to back of neck until the guy stopped living. This is the new police state.
The news media is in the autopsy business I guess. To all you anti police types, go screw off.
HEY DIDI, YOU’RE AN IDIOT!
ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF COPS that just can’t wait to show their power over another with their toys.. is this why they only hire people as cops who have a lower IQ than the average person? What a bunch of loosers! WHAT WE NEED is a group of COPS who police the COPS, give them a dose of their ignorant, bully attitude…again what loosers!
Those who gravitate to police work are the marginally employed – postal workers who become sadists.
A police state requires lots of police – so this kind of thing will continue until we take back our freedoms. Grab your pitchforks, it’s gonna be a nasty next decade.
NO sympathy from me when these cops get shot. They are murderers with badges – thugs. And they need to get as good as they give.
I”m a 60 year old lifetime republican. Ronald Reagan would weep at what’s become of the world.
shoot the bastards
I’m with Ralph. If you think this guy is a victim, you’re a moron and I’d like to take you out behind the woodshed.
Once he is cuffed and arrested, the subject is now your ward and you are responsible for his/her well being. Any police training tells you that once a person is secure, you must stop all aggressive actions and become a caretaker. The video shows this did not happen. Death can occur by positional asphyxia to persons who are intoxicated, obese, mentally challenged or simply emotional. In this case, officers appeared to continue to compress the subject’s body after the cuffs were applied. The knee on the neck was overkill and can be considered a lethal action.
The most shocking part of the video is the inaction of all officers present to ascertain a pulse and render due care.
I’ve had the opportunity to end the life of two people who directly pointed firearms at me and there were several folks with ball bats and knives. Each time, I was able to end the situation without killing them.
I got into this career with the single purpose of helping and defending people who were otherwise unable to do so. I don’t regret one minute.
There is yet to be seen if there is cause and effect of the tasering. A man who was tasered, and subsequent to that event, was restrained with considerable weight applied to his spinal cord via his neck did at some point quit breathing and expired. I’d like to be present at the autopsy and learn about the cause of death here.
JC, It isn’t everyone else’s job to play “diagnose that mental condition” when we find someone acting erratically in public.
If you can’t control your actions, an airport is one place you will encounter folks who have little time and patience for your problem.
As for the Taser? Most of the time people won’t die. Most of them also won’t die if you break a collar bone or femur with a knight stick. Take your pick, but don’t endanger my cops by making them street brawl suspects.
Ignore uniformed officers in any country, even if you don’t speak the language and see where it gets you. It’s not hard to figure out what the guys with the flack jackets were there for.
For the whiners, next time we find a jerk like this one, we’ll seat him on the plane next to you.
The officers tried to subdue this deranged man as peacefully as possible, using non-lethal methods. You have to put yourself in their shoes, prior to judging them. They did not have the intent to kill anyone, simply restrain and arrest. It is a shame that he passed away, however, it is prudent that when in Rome, one should speak some Italian to avoid any confusion with the Italian authorities. If he was a Polish immigrant, he should speak the language of the province he is living in.
May God protect the innocent and grant his soul peace.
This death may be due to pressure on the brainstem area when the officers knee was on his neck. With certain induviduals this kind of pressure is deadly. Enuf pressure will kill anybody or at least make them lose conciousness. As far as the taser; crulety has always been part of humanity. Is’nt there another way?
The RCMP murdered him in cold blood, intentionally. He was absolutely no threat at all, to anyone. I hope they fry the bastards responsible. No doubt who the real terrorists are.
Hard to say without the medical exam results, but the TV report cut out the part were the copdude seems to be ramming the end of the baton into the guys head that you see in the YouTube video. It looks like it has less to do with the taser and more to do with him being asphyxiated by the guy’s knee on his neck or having his brains bashed in by the guy with the stick.
Having been in this situation twice myself, I can tell you that these officers had more than enough manpower to have handled this in a very non-violent way. Detaining someone properly is an act of overpowering and subduing the individual. What these thugs did is inexcusable. The responsible parties should all be held liable.
You know…I am a former NRA card holder(only dropped due to a cash crunch), a hard core American Republican, and I have family in law enforcement. Although I can see why the cops acted as they did minus the knee on the guys neck for an excessive amount of time, there is not a single excuse that could account for the passenger being stuck waiting in the holding area for 10 hours without anyone making a realistic attempt to communicate with him until he started having his anxiety attack…including the travel he endured he was most likely up for 20+ hours at the very least before the incident that was filmed. The family deserves the right to sue in this case, which is ackward for me to say because I hate lawsuits in general.
Maybe they ought to send the Pollock’s mother a bill for all the equipment her son damaged prior to getting taken down!
I would also be pissed if I was held for over 10 hours. While this guy was causing a stink, you can’t expect someone who does not know your language to do something you tell him to. There were 4 stocky officers who could have easily taken him down with some pepper spray, or wrestle him down.
A disturbing trend shows law enforcement prematurely reaching for a taser to solve a problem, instead of exhausting their other non-lethal methods. A taser should be the last resort before a gun, not the first thing you use.
It is really to bad they dont have transators. Why was he held for 10 hours?? Why did they not start CPR?? There seems to be more to this story than we have been told.
He survived the iron curtain only to be murdered by free loving Canadian Police state .irony
at its worst Lets hope a really good lawyer takes this case and all involed need to pay and pay dearly , such a discrace, no justice,
never trust the government for any reason
The cop with the knee on the neck killed the guy. He suffocated, pure and simple.
Why didn’t these Mounted Police start CPR or at least rescue breathing immediately. If they did, there’s a very good chance the polish guy would be alive today.
Fricking PC society in Canuck land. What’s wrong with a billy club to the leg, cuff em, stuff him in a cruiser and take him to jail.
Ewww, I don’t want to touch him, so I’ll taze him while Bruce suffocates him with his knee. Then we all stand back and watch his brain die during the small window where CPR could have fixed thing.
Pathetic!
It’s clear to me the broadcaster has never been hit either by someone in anger or mental crisis. If he had he would understand that either way, it hurts.
These police officers took an oath to uphold the law and keep order. They did not take an oath to die needlessly. I would also like to remind all bleeding hearts(those who are never in harms way) that when a police officer is present, there is always a gun involved. Holsters today are far more secure than 20 years ago but the weapon is still available to a knowing opponent.
More murdering swine. Don’t expect any massive outrage though as the victim was White and not a Black.
no CPR just watch him die Oh yeah hes a danger running away = danger faceit these cops didnt know crap even after they kill murder him they just stand there there ,
I am sure CPR was in their trainig but they failed to use it no attempt to save his life I feel so much safer knowing they are out there protecting citizens ,Tax money at work gotta love it
Alot of this is occuring because people are nasty inside because of decades of insane television shows and entertainment. But also, the courts are dismissing civil rights suits without giving the parties and opportunity to present their cases. And the news, just a bunch of nasty government lackies.

Having worked in an Emergency Room, I can tell you that many times, someone in the process of a heart attack or having cardiac crisis will present with symptoms no more complicated than incredible aggitation. When they tasered him he seemed to be having chest pains and clutching his chest. What happened to this man was a travesty. He may have needed medical attention rather than an ambush. Disgraceful behavior and poor judgement by police cannot be condoned as just even when everyone is so guarded because of the threat of terrorism.

Years ago the RCMP used to employ special constables in unglamorous duties. Essentially wanna be officers in training. Were these responders full fledged constables? I saw no officers in proper uniform. No regulation police caps worn.
I can easily imagine that the airport security detail is not a highly sought after foot beat?
The man was NOT detained for 10 hours. He passed the first Security checkpoint but then decided to wait by the baggage pickup and not continue to the Secondary checkout. This is the location where his Mother by mistake told him that she would meet up with him.
In addition to not being able to speak English, his ability to interpret English, French or even universal travel symbols was extremely limited. This was after all his first airplane ride and first trip out of Poland
I blame the Custom Officers ( punk community college law and security graduates for sure ) at the second checkout who finally processed the man as able to enter Canada.
They certainly should have realized his plane landed hours earlier. Why the hell did they not challenge him about the time discrepancy and realize he was simply LOST in a foreign environmet! Certainly THEY have immediate access to interpreters.
Who actually called the RCMP? Airport Security, Customs Agents, Custodial staff. It certainly wasn’t John Q Public who was too busy whipping out his cell phone for other purposes.
It’s just sad in every way. I’m sure the mother was looking forward to having immediate family in Canada as she gets older. BTW they say his luggage was full of canadian travel and nature books. Hardly, what I expect an unstable man to be carrying.
It just sad statement on the fact that everyone thinks the world is a smaller place because of technology where universal norms are demanded of everyone and how tragic the results can be for those out of the mainstream.
These police are cowards. There is no evidence that the man is armed in any way. He doesn’t speak english and according to the report has been in this secure area for 10 hours. I’m not sure why he has been there, but the man seemed extremely frustrated as most of us would be. There is no need to taser a person that is unarmed. Tasering is the second to last resort of force. If a person has a knife, bottle, some non-munition type then yes, taser him. If he has nothing on him then try to calm him down and find out what is wrong. This is totally not needed. Cowards.

i hope the police officers have real consequences for their actions (such as dismissal). the authorities in charge of managing security in the airport (so the “higher up’s” that made the decision to keep the man detained) should also face charges of manslaughter and/or cruel and unusual punishment. i’m not sure why the guy was stuck in a room for 10 hours but i’d go pretty nuts if i were stuck in there for that amount of time.
as for the bigger picture, it comes down to our society not being structured in such a way that we can adequately address the diversity of people that operate within said-society. meaning, general alienation due to rapid population expansion and technological advancement allowing for a more porous society (one where people can easily and quickly transport themselves from one culture to another) limit and degrade the “human-ness” of interactions, such that we become merely ‘others’ with no real value nor transferable emotional empathy that would naturally arise in smaller groups.
it’s a bigger problem just “tasers” and “crazy cops”. the problem is endemic with our general ideological construct…

I can’t believe anybody is defending the actions of these police officers. He was aggressive and violent? A little. I’ve seen worse after football matches. I’ve been more aggressive than that to my parnter and he never once thinks of doing anything other than restraining me.
Isn’t it the policeman’s duty to risk injury in the line of work they do? Isn’t that what tax payers PAY them to do? The risky work that nobody else has the courage to do?
I would be so incredibly pissed off if I was detained for 10 hours in another country with nobody explaining to me why. This guy wasn’t dangerous, did any of you watch the video? Heck, I wouldn’t be afraid of him. He had no guns, no knives. He might give you a bit of a punch but honestly, 3-4 police officers would easily have been able to restrain him.
The poor guy was scared. Look at him. He’s scared. He’s been accused of doing something wrong – he doesn’t know what. He comes over to see his mother and all these strange people are yelling at him, videotaping him, nobody speaks his language. It’s unacceptable.
Amazing that they did`nt even listen to Airport security nor did they even try to take time to calm him down or find an interperter!
No! That excedes any reasonable response to the situation, way to Agressive that cost a man his life.
property can be replaced not human life!
In Canada,America or any so called free nation i think the people should take a good look at their system and make a ruckus when there`s such disregard for life. they should be tried for murder!

I am ashamed to have RCMP like them in Canada. They should have tried to get someone to talk to him in a different language before they decided to take this mans life, and the cop that help him down by his neck with his knee should be ashamed. I am sad to say that I am ashamed to be a Canadian with cops that don’t question before they kill!
Typical police mentality these days seems to many have a “Judge Dredge” attitude. The Police look upon everyone as a heinous criminal unless you are a member of their personal club. These so called police should be suspended and tried for at least manslaughter. This whole situation was unavoidable and would have been handled better if a properly trained personel was present. The victim should be alive right now with his family.
This is a sad truth of how human beings (especially those who are immune to dishing out pain and who are accustomed to abusing their authority)get a high out of others reaction to violence. Many of us pause to see the car accidents, but then there are others who get a thrill in creating them. Fire these jerk-offs and hang the one who killed the victim, right after you cut his balls off and let him feed on them.
So which of you armchair quarterbacks want to wrestle with an enraged, mentally unstable man holding a stapler? It sure is easy to sit in front of your computer and criticize the police while Mommy makes dinner, isn’t it? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize there was no happy ending to this unfortunate situation. You have the luxury of all the time in the world to sit around and analyze what these officers did based on three minutes of video and the interpretation of an uninformed journalist and then spout your sewage about how terrible the police are. Unlike you, these officers had to make a quick decision to solve a complicated and dangerous problem. They did what they were trained to do, in what appeared to be a controlled, professional manner. This wasn’t gratuitous or sadistic. Did you see any of the officers giving each other “high fives” or laughing or joking? No, you did not. Despite the juvenile ranting on this web site, none of those officers enjoyed having to engage with that man. None of them are happy about what happened. They will relive this scenario over and over again in their minds, and it wouldn’t surprise me if one or two of these officers leaves law enforcement due to the post-traumatic stress caused by this incident and the general public’s hostility and ignorance.
he deserved death, he caused monetary damage to some objects, who will pay for more objects? thank goodness for police that protect our objects. our objects must be safe. i must go back to work.
yes Rich you tell them!!!
The fucker would just not stop breathing even with a knee on his neck – what a dangerous criminal.

And all these sissy liberals with him.
OH why do people even bother responding to fascists, why do I bother ? I don’t know.

don’t worry the comment you made is enough to rot in hell – so you can add murder to that, won’t change a thing. you already are a fascist.

what does it say about you if you know that you are using a weapon that could result in the persons death? (there is a better way!)If you are an idiot and think that a computer or something else man made is worth that risk then you should be shot just for the hell of it. Also don’t say the cops are in danger, that is BS, they chose that job for a reason, they are small people wanting to feel power. (not all but most)how often is being a cop in the top 10 most deadly jobs? not very! If they did not want to be in that position don’t do the job and they should stop hiding behind the I want to protect and serve crap it is a LIE! By the way I am a republican! lol
Hey, “Rich”:
/Unlike you, these officers had to make a quick decision to solve a complicated and dangerous problem./
How _complicated_ was that situation, Genius? How _dangerous_ did that guy look to you, facing odds of 1 against 4 trained officers?
All this episode shows me is that North America is rapidly devolving into a collection of police states. Citizenry: submit.
This didn’t have to go like it did. I’m somewhat shocked not only at the video and story, but also at some of your comments. People up there like RoadDog and Jim Vincent have it right, and they are the authoritative voices on this web page. You who blindly throw your personal liberties away to be “taken care of” by your government will surely get just that.
After 10 hours? I would be upset as well. The computor and other destroyed instuments could have been payed for by the guy afterwards. All it takes is ONE trigger happy cop and the rest becomes robots to follow him anywhere. I say a law suit, deeper training and a prison sentence to all involved.
Congratulations! You have been protected and served.
They should of just shot his ass.You don’t get close to someone like that.He could of taken one of the officers guns and shot everyone. That guy was NUTS!

So…still lots of juvenile mudslinging, but no substantive comments here. What’s the matter, boys, mommy didn’t wash your Che Guevara shirt? Go ahead and blame all your inadequacies on the big, bad facist police. By the way, if some tweaker parolee is breaking into your (mommy’s)house tonight, call 9-1-1 and be thankful for the men and women that show up and put themselves in harm’s way for ungrateful strangers like you. You just don’t get it, do you?
“v” and “Rob D”: let me explain this to you in small words you can understand. This was a no-win situation. Were mistakes made? Without a doubt. Could this have been handled differently? Yes. You lack the ability to comprehend that none of these cops is happy about what happened and each of them will have to live with what happened for the rest of their lives. That’s a concept for grown ups. Your mindless sniping adds no value whatsoever to this discussion, because you don’t know what you’re talking about. Go drink some more Kool Aid and smoke another bowl.

“call 9-1-1 and be thankful for the men and women that show up and put themselves in harm’s way for ungrateful strangers like you. ”
never trust the police to save you, trust in yourself arm yourself the problem with trusting any government agency is incompetence that is what we see here not that they just handled it wrong but made no attempt to save him
how would they handle your family??
would you feel the same I wonder if they murdered your brother
This tragedy began far before the police arrived. How is that no one at the airport, either arriving passengers or staff, could see a man obviously in need of assistance waiting for hours in a baggage claim area without making some attempt to determine why he is not leaving after claiming his luggage. This heightened security zone in international arrivals is a cold, lonely place for foreigners without the ability to communicate their needs on weekends and evenings. Why are there no “ambassadors” inside this area at night to greet new arrivals to help them and welcome them. We call this one of the world’s best airports. Quite the opposite in my view. Beautiful but cold, dysfunctional and totally unsuited to those with disabilities and language barriers. I am totally ashamed of YVR and the Border agency for their inability to make this arrivals area one in which a new immigrant in distress can get help quickly.
I would like to know why none of the officers, all of whom receive CPR training, rendered medical aid after the man stopped breathing. Why did none of the security guards assist with CPR. 12 minutes for paramedics to arrive is fatal to anyone with no pulse or respirations as anyone with basic first aid knows. Perhaps he would not have died had they taken even the most basic of steps to keep him alive.
Great attempt at CPR guys! Canadians seem to spend their lives critizing the USA for its failures and aggression ad nauseam, but this shows the hypocriy in their attitude. This beats almost anything you would see in the USA in the Callousness department! Then the media gets a great kick out of profiting from showing it on their vaunted network, with the typical “we only do this for this reason or that reason”! Shameful! Don’t throw stones at the USA with relish anymore until you move from your own Glass House!

Thanks to many of you for the expert advice. I can’t believe I’ve been doing it so wrong for 20 yrs. Perhaps many of you would like to sign up and make some changes?
I agree. This was handled completely wrong. That poor man was in the holding area for 10 hours without someone to explain what was happening. I think that, in 10 hours, they could have found someone that speaks his language. This was atrocious. He probably lost his mind because he was trapped in there for 10 hours. he looked very confused and not violent.
I have to say that these officers handled this completely wrong. I think that the security firm should be held responsible and heavily sued by the man’s family.
People ask what are the cops supposed to do? Are they supposed to put their life on the line?
Well maybe the four armed cops with bulletproof vests can spend more than 30 seconds trying to work with the guy before they pull out the taser. After all, isn’t his life worth just a little effort? Cops in a hurry to go back and sit in the ready room? Have something more to do than protecting the public (of which the victim is a member)?
Then, after they kill him, perhaps they can try CPR? Or is it more important to rewind the Taser cord?
Do I think they should have wrestled with the guy? No. He was there for 10 hours. Why was this the right time to pull out the taser and zap him.
A little more humanity is in order.
Canada should be proud, their police training is very much up to par with our US polic, Congrats!
This is really sad!!
The guy was obviously scared.. (he spent over 20hrs travelling; first time on such a ling trip). You can clearly see this in the way he breaths. LIKE A SCARED DEER… He does not know what to do… When the police shows up he clearly calls them for HELP!!! Yet they don’t even attempt communicating with him… he is unarmed…. there are 4 police officers. 24 seconds after they showed up, the guys was dead!!! (tasered twice). No attempts to do CPR… SHAME ON these oh so BRAVE RCM officers!
– just curious if it’s because of the education?? Are the officers trained to deal with people at a deeper level, do they have to take psychologym sociology, ethics… perhaps they should!!
Common sense would do to, if nothing else!!!!!
Yet, they did not bother trying anything…
SIMPLY LAZY from my point of view!!!
They did not attempt to talk to him, OR use quasi-sign language to try to communicate with him, to see what the problem is… They could have tackled him easily. At one point he turned his back to the officers, they could have easily jumped on him then…. and finally, if anything they could have SHOT him in a leg or something… Although with a wound he’d be ALIVE now….
The police is here to serve and protect.
But as it seems, they do not care!!! They’re quick on playing with and using their little toys! And people die unnecessarily.
This is just sick!!!
Today’s world seriously lacks compassion!!! Everyone cares only about him/herself.
RoadDog – YOU are the face of those we’d like to call for help! to protect us!
THANK YOU FOR BEING A PERSON! Tthoughtful of others!
And may God always protect you!!!!
These cops should be fired and the cop who put is knee on the guy’s neck should be prosecuted for murder or manslaughter.
The lawsuit is going to be huge. This is wrongful death. Four cops and they couldn’t just throw the guy to the ground and handcuff him. This is insane. This is murder.
Guys like these give all cops a bad name.
Appalling. Not only the needless death, but the ten hour ordeal leading up to it, especially when the man’s mother was waiting for him nearby, with no idea he was there.
In TEN HOURS nobody was able to ascertain that he was speaking Polish? BTW, someone on the audio track opined he was speaking Russian. There are enough cognates between the two languages that a Russian speaker could have gotten a rough idea of the source of the problem.
More appalling: the naked hostility shown here, towards both the dead Polish man and the police.
Get a grip, folks.
Repent Canada, you’ve killed an innocent man, all of you are responsible! What a savage people.
What a bunch of whiney babies you are!!
This arrogant stupid dead russian should have stopped drinking the vodka.
He should not have made a idiot of himself.
If he was in russia doing that crap he would have been shot instead of tazered.
You bunch of whining cry baby liberals.
If he was attacking your family you would have cried that they did come quicker and shoot him.
SOMEONE TAKEN OUT FOR BEING CONFUSED, BY AGGRESIVE
POLICE WHO DO NOT CARE FOR HUMAN LIFE.WHAT A SHAME
WHAT A TERRIBLE SHAME!
These so called police officers need a lot of training to deal with the public. If the remainder of their force act this way then god help the people . there is no other word for what they done only MURDER.
Another case of a Taser used for police convenience. The guy wasn’t even a threat. And what’s with the criminal putting his knee on the guy’s neck until he stops breathing, eh?
To all the keyboard commandos here that have posted here deploring the actions of the cops and have never been in a fight with a crazed person, let me tell you, anything, and I mean anything can happen, and happen real fast. I was a cop for 30 years and had to confront and take into custody these crazed EDP (emotionally disturbed persons) and I can tell you that sometimes 5 cops have not been able to control them. One of my friends during one of these encounters got his gun ripped out of his holster and shot to death with 3 cops trying to wrestle the guy down to the ground. So you’ve got to get these guys down fast or you can get hurt real bad or worse in a heartbeat! It’s never intended to kill the guy with a taser shot, but it can happen and is usually attributed to a combination of drugs, alcohol, both, and hysterical delerium. Too bad the guy died, but how would you feel if he got loose from the cops and grabbed your child at the airport and wringed his/her neck and killed them? Yeah, tell us, how would you feel then! This guy brought on his own problem, and had to deal with the law of unintended consequences. I support the cops on this one.
They guy was being held 10 hours! Also he came from an Intl flight that was just as long.
You think your mind does not play tricks with you, jet lag and all. Where was a phone with a translator? This went over the top!
Everyone is to blame the traveler and the police, and Canadian Immigration.
This happens in the USA too but only in Airports.
While our borders languish like swiss cheese!
So much for compassion and human dignity and respect!
This is pretty simple.
Subject = 1, unarmed (unless you count a stapler)
Cops = 3 of them, armed (with non-lethal weapons other than taser)
They had no reason to resort to the taser. Cops are trained to use the least amount of force necessary in a given situation. The taser is not the appropriate weapon. They could have used pepper spray, rubber or sandbag bullets, or simply used batons and brute force.
So much for “mental hygiene arrest” or somesuch. Looks like losing it while waiting for 10 hrs. at airport (hey, why was he there for 10 hours anyway?) is enough to get you a lethal dose of electricity these days.
“O Canada!” Sadly, usually it’s the Canadians giving us Americans the example for “proportionate response”. I am sorry to see this kind of lethal official hooliganism and abuse of power has now taken hold up north… nowhere is safe if not in Canada.
As far as I’m concerned those subhuman “cops” deserve to spend big time in prison for homicide. SHAME ON THEM!!! Tasers in the wrong hands are proving to be extremely dangerous weapons.
May Mr. Dziekanski rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers go to him and his family.
9-11 has given Governments, teetering on the edge of total control, the green card to oppress, and attack anytone they feel is different, whether they are a threat or not. American police and shows like COPS show the world the harsh reality of inner city police. Then other police forces around the world start to immitate their example as “the future”. Really, when you look back, and see how people were in the 1950’s are we so different ? Are we so much more violent ? The answer is no, but the Police forces, fed on a TV show excitement, media exageratted paranoia and hyped up American ghetto crime TV SHOWS, respond to every situation like it was a military war zone without even understanding the situation first. Over the top.
@Frank
Apparently there is not a single police trainer in the universe who understands the simple principle that it does not work to try dealing with an EDP by getting nose-to-nose with him and screaming “Calm down!” at the top of your lungs.
I was on the other end of an encounter of this sort, after having been mugged. By the time the coppers arrived, my adrenaline level was through the roof. You must know the feeling: tunnel vision, time compression, ears not exactly working at top form. By this time, the attackers (two of them) had backed off, because I’d brought a little Buck knife out of my pocket when the second one jumped me. What the police saw was a very angry man with a knife, and two weasels actually claiming I had attacked THEM. Were it not for the fact that one or two of the cops knew me personally, and (a) held back the others while they (b) addressed me by name, trying to get my attention, I would have been just as dead as that man in Vancouver.
I have watched a number of these encounters unfold (as an eyewitness) over my lifetime, and it seems that depending who shows up, the police either over react, or refuse to engage the disturbed person altogether.
When I was running the ticket window in a bus station, one of our drivers put someone off the bus because he was behaving irrationally. The guy attacked me, but did not manage to grab me through the opening in the ticket window. Half a dozen bystanders called 911, and the guy was still raving when the police arrived. Not only did they refuse to arrest him even though several bystanders described his attacking the ticket window, they demanded that I put him on the next bus, regardless of his condition. When my boss arrived and demanded they deal with the passenger, they put the BOSS against the wall and roughed him up.
Police departments have a dismal track record in dealing with the people you so blithely call “EDPs,” and they are in denial about it.
I understand your viewpoint, but I don’t think cops do themselves any favors by reflexively defending anything a police does in the line of duty. The Thin Blue Line ought not protect the coppers who are stupid, ill-tempered or inept.
The guy with his kneww on his neck killed him. Simple as that. NO CPR attempt. Accessory to murder all!
Malcolm Gladwell wrote about just this kind of situation in Blink regarding the Diallo case in New York: Multiple cops rush into a scene in a non-emergency situtation, when one well armed, patient police office one would’ve been enough to defuse the situation. The result is alot of adrenalian and group psychology that makes the individual cops be more aggressive and act more rashly than would’ve been necessary.
This isn’t some facist vs. evil criminal debate we have to have. Police just need to learn that less is more in many situations, and that they don’t have to handle every problem like it’s 9/11.
But if you’re looking for a talking point, then you can say the problem is institutional: Security forces are given excessive budgets, told to prepared for the worse, know they’ll be humiliated if they let another Mohammed Atta slip through, drill constantly for hyper-emergency situations, and rally themselves constantly to stop the bad guys at any cost. The result is the gung-ho mentality we see here–just what you want when the stuff hits the fan, but also results in occassional collateral damage like this poor guy.
Incidents like this make us do an internal check on society’s moral barometer. This man’s panic, frustration and anxiety were feuled by extremely poor airport management, communication and security. Airport personnel were not trained to understand a foreigner’s needs. The officers were faced with hairline decisions but finally responded to his adrenaline with force that was excessive, period. You can argue the rights of both sides, but the outcome is a slap against humanity in any nation. Canada sacrificed its benign image on an airport carpet and placed an image next to a caption that echo many others until change is mandated: ‘Never Again’.
Curt, it may surprise you to learn that the Taser is considered a lesser use of force than pepper spray, any impact weapon or hands-on contact with a suspect. The Taser is not considered deadly force, as you suggest. You point out that the cops were armed. Are you suggesting that deadly force was a viable option in this situation? I didn’t think so. These cops weren’t trying to kill him; they were trying to control him.
Think about this: any time you fight with the police, there is a statistically higher probability that you will be seriously injured or die. Conversely, not fighting with police results in a lower probability of serious injury or death.
Here are some other random observations and questions:
Some postings have suggested that this man was detained for ten hours. The voice-over says he was “in a secure area for almost ten hours.” In airport talk, this simply means if he walked out of this area, he would have to go through a security screening to get back where he was. There is no evidence on the tape that this man was forcibly detained anywhere by anyone.
At the beginning of the video, the man is seen moving furniture to barricade himself inside or, it could be argued, to make it more difficult for the police to get to him. At several points in the video, it appears the man is free to walk away – the voice-over even describes how the security guards “make no effort to restrain him.”
At the instant when the Taser is deployed, the man is turned away from the camera and the view of him is obstructed. The viewer cannot see the man’s hands. The police officers have a clear, unobstructed view of him.
Even after the Taser is righteously deployed, the man still fights. An onlooker is even heard on the video saying, “He’s still fighting them off.”
Clearly the most likely cause of death is positional asphyxiation, caused by the officer kneeling on the man’s neck for too long. This is where the encounter between this violently deranged man and these police officers took a tragic, unfortunate turn, for all involved. The RCMP will undoubtedly pay millions in damages due to poor training, and these officers will have to live with the outcome of this incident.
1. The taser did NOT kill him, the knee to the neck did.
2. The taser is an EXCELLENT tool for Law Enforcement personel.
3. The Officer who placed his knee on the neck should be held accountable.
The opposition to Tasers always seem to come from the “lets hug our criminal” crowd.
If you think you can leave your family behind every shift and face the worst society can produce on a daily basis then DO IT stop second guessing every little thing while you sit safe an snug behind those who protect YOU.
Thank you to all the Police Officers out there who protect my family and me.
I believe the polices actions were justified in this case.
Regardless of whether the man was angry or had been sitting there for 10 hours that does not give him, or anyone else, the right to go on a rampage in an airport filled with thousands of people.
The man was clearly violent and dangerous. Even in the short video you could see that the level of violence was increasing as time went by. Throwing a computer and then smashing a chair agaisnt a glass wall the woman was standing behind are clear signs of this. At any time the man could have left the room and attacked people in the airport causing injury or death to any number of people. The police were most likely aware of this escalating violence via thier radios which is why they wasted no time in subduing him when they arrived and rightfully so.
Waiting on a translator is not always a viable option in cases like this, if one is not available you cannot simply let someone that violent go on a rampage until one arives. The safety of the public is more important than a single violent person such as this, thankfully no one else was injured during this episode as it could have turned out very differently if he had left the room before the police arrived.
It’s unfortunate the man died in the process and it would be foolish to think the police arrived to kill him. Authority figures are universally recognizable even if he could not understand what they were saying he would have known what the officers represented and continuing to act the way he did in front of them was foolish.
The officers used the tools at thier disposal to subdue him. The taser is a less than lethal tool and effective and safe in the vast, vast majority of cases. Certainly far safer than a baton, throwing punches, or physically wrestling someone to the ground as some have suggested which is nearly certain to cause injurues to both parties. Even after on the ground the man continued to struggle. In the end he died as a result of his own actions.
Canda-
Land of killer Cops. I am boycotting this violent country. MUDERERS’s
It is going to be hunting season on Canadians in Poland.
it wasn’t the taser ….you ever heard of positional asphyxia? ….thats what it was – not the taser.
FOUR pathetically weak and uneducated RCMP officers can’t take down one unarmed, disoriented man?
Resort to tasers right away.
Why are these idiots even RCMP officers? If these are the kind of simple minded weaklings we have on our RCMP force, we are in a whole lot more trouble than this.
After being told he doesn’t speak English, they speak English to him? Very intelligent. Can’t find a Russian, Polish, Ukrainian RCMP officer in Vancouver to have them come there to talk to this man?
What a pathetic excuse for handling a situation such as this. Exactly how NOT to do it.
This disgusts me and thousands of others, no doubt.
For all we know the guy was saying “I have to get out of here….I’ve been here over 10 hours already and my disabled mother is expecting me and I have her diabetes medication.” And then right before they Taze him he yells “Please no, God no, I have a PaceMaker…Plus I’m wearing a medical alert bracelet.”
The point is we’ll probably never know what he was saying because there was no translator. This guys civil rights we violated. Wait a minute, do you guys have those in Canada? We have them here in the U.S. and the libs want us to extend them to battlefield terrorist so why not extend a little to this foreigner?
I like the taser, but I think more research should go into it and more effort on the part of Law Enforcement to show that it is not lethal. This man of course may have had a pre-existing heart condition and that was exacerbated when shocked. There is a non lethal weapon called The Active Denial system that the military is working on that goes just slight below the skin and causes high heat discomfort. This will probably be adapted for Police use eventually. Check it out:

some one needs to hunt down and kill these four pigs. they had a good chance to grad him when his back was turned, they were arms length from him. they could have had his hands behind his back,a nd cuffed in no time. instead they decided to dish out punishment. note how they looks down at the computer on floor, not at all seeming to be worried about him being a threat, yet they choose to back off and taze away.
what punks, WAR CRIMES… TORTURE thats what these stinky pigs did can anyone say abugrab? shame on the pigs
this was a tragic accident. the man was acting insane, the cops had to subdue him. A taser is not usually lethal, and what if this man went insane and harmed other people. you canadians are a bunch of wimps if you freak out about this. it’s a sad tragic accident… ACCIDENT!
I think the cops have every right to taze people that are acting unruly and do not follow orders. Getting into a wrestling match with any suspect is the last option. I feel sorry for his families loss but his actions set the scene and caused his death. I don’t care what country you come from, you must act in an appropriate manner. Thank you R.C.M.P. for doing the thankless job of keeping the peace. I would not want to go hand to hand with anyone.
Please don’t boycott Canada, Jack Strong! How will they survive without you?
Blah, blah blah pigs, blah blah blah facists. blah blah blah war crimes… Hey Dave, go back to playing your X-box and have your mommy make you a sandwich, OK? The grownups are trying to have a dialogue here. Shovel your crap somewhere else.

Dave, forget the X-box. You’d better get to your English homework. From the looks of your posting, you need some practice.
He should have stayed in Russia if he’s going to act like an idiot! What was he? Another ‘brain surgeon’ from the 3rd world dumpster coming here to add ‘diversity’! Yeah, we need more trash… ! “You pay your money and you take your chances”. He acted like an as s and got zaped for causing trouble. Most don’t die. It was his lucky day.
NO ONE was in danger at anytime during this incident. It was clear to me that the man was clearly agitated, but was not harming anyone. The comment by the one officer that he thought the man was speaking Russian indicates a clear lack of training in international language recognition. Clearly the RCMP over-reacted to the situation and that over-reaction was based on FAULTY TRAINING! It should be clear to anyone in the US and Canada that police officers are nothing more than society’s hired guns. Hired guns usually don’t have the highest intellectual skills. They simply do based upon training, and all-too-often, their training is FAULTY based upon FALSE assumptions and POOR intelligence on the part of their leaders. The RCMP should be ashamed of themselves, their training, and their leaders. So should all the TSA agents and police in the US that do the same thing.
Manynn, I am so sorry this happened to this guy. With that said I’m truly happy this did not occur in the US, could you imagine the headlines and fa sho Bush would have been blamed. I could see it now,
Cowboy mentality leads to immigrant death at US Airport.
- George Bush’s influence on the United States has taken a turn for the worse as evidenced by the stunning and unnecessary death of a Polish immigrant at JFK Airport…
Hey Kelly! Step out of your little princess world and go ‘talk to him’ ’subdue him’ or the next thug you meet! You must live in a nice crime free area. How about you not talk and do something? Go and ’sign out’ a murderer or rapist from your local prison and treat them to a nice Thanksgiving dinner and see how they repay your kindness! Oh, wait! Typical liberal–complain, point fingers and hide!
Canadians are hypocites.
They are saying “Our country is one of the finest nation in the world and G7 member.
But the reallity is opposite of them. Canada is hostile to aliens and mean social members like stiking teachers, officers who have no concern for others.
Canadian only like dirty sex, drugs, and kiliing aliens who even don’t speaks english.
I really hate canadians. They are hypocites.
To poor, simple-minded Kurt.
You also don’t live in the real world. WE SPEAK ENGLISH! When in Rome do as the Romans do! DON’T ACT LIKE AN ASS IN SOMEONE ELSES COUNTRY! So, how long should they allow that fool to act out? An hour, day, week? Well? Tell us? You would have handled it better! So the cops didn’t speak Russian? I didn’t hear any others offering to interpet. Should we all learn every language on earth? If you don’t like ‘the man’ fine. But don’t be a coward and hide behind incidents and make fun of the ’stupid people’ who would risk their life to defend yours, you pantie-waist! Act like an ass, break other peoples property and you get zapped. No, I am not a cop.
The guy was out of control. The cops overreacted. Taser’s fine, but keep your knee off of people’s necks. I’ve done takedowns just like these clowns did and have managed to always protect the suspect/client regardless. The cop with the knee in the neck should be charged with manslaughter and removed from the force. The other guys should sit desk for a good long while and go back through escalation of force and crisis intervention principles. Sad all around. And those airport security or whatever they were–what a joke.
Agree completely with NEC, it did not have to come to this. Unfortunately in too many of these situations adrenaline can become overwhelming and thinking goes out the window – physical reaction is the dominant result. It won’t surprise me one bit if the kneee on the neck (suffocation) is what utimately led to his death. The percentage of folks that die from being tasered is so infinitesimal, it’s not worth mentioning.
Could you imagine being stuck in an Airport for 10 hrs, not being able to speak the language and the pathetic authorities not providing someone who has multilingual skills at an INTERNATIONAL FUCK*&^ AIRPORT, that’s unconscionable!!
`
It should not have come to this, damn tragic! I can’t go crazy and hammer the cops. They arrived on the scene to find a guy who appeared threatening, what the hell are they supposed to do?
This was truly a “perfect storm” scenario.
Sad…
These four pussies don’t even try to admin CPR. They just shrug and wind up thei taser cable.
Four murdering thugs.
below the belt canada police
little by little all freedoms will be taken away– throw a fit, you get killed. say something “unsavory”, get arrested– the US president is all for spying on phones, email, etc… keep spending money in “safety”, you poor ignorant puppets, when your family is broke and you’re happy to work at McDonald’s, go celebrate your “safety” with the other homeless, nobody will care, and you’ll probably end up being arrested yourselves, hahahaha!! vote republican, they do a great job!!! hahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crazy cops – what were they thinking?
Rich: you’re not even close to funny. Trot out your ridiculous snaps on the playground, where the kids might validate you just a bit. Nobody here is interested.
This ought to be a more serious discussion, and you can see most adults here are treating it that way. I understand that there is a significant segment of the North American population willing to trade freedom for safety at this point in history. I, however, am wary of that course of action.
You can defend the four RCMP all you want. None of them acted with anything resembling honor or righteousness. Care to debate that point? Didn’t think so.
But you’ll retort that sometimes honor and right must be set aside. What a pathetic outlook. You deserve what you get.
I reiterate: the story should never have ended this way.
A lot of armchair judgment going on in here. Looks like your amazing brains are capable of absorbing the facts even when nobody gives them to you. All you have is this silly video, and suddenly you know everything.
Pathetic. Maybe one or more of these officers did something terrible, maybe they didn’t. Screw you for pretending to know.
He waited for 10 hours in that room. Here in the US, we must wait a minimum of 10 hours on hold every time we try to call or visit a government office, but they should really have their stuff together better than that in canada. 10 hours of some receptionist telling you to go sit down and wait while you are just trying to meet your mother/only person you know in the country sounds a bit kafkaesque, and i wouldn’t appreciate it either. People can only be pushed so far. Problem is people working at the airport/dmv/police dept/any other gov’t agency are all jerks and YOUR time is worth squat.
I thank God that when something similar happened to my daughter, it happened in Poland and not in Canada.
She was flying to attend an in-law’s wedding, and after a nightmare of delays and uncaring airline and airport staff in the US and further delays in Germany (where her replacement flight landed late), she arrived in Warsaw – two days late and unable to say in Polish more than “hello”, “goodbye”, “thank you”, and “the horse is on top of the airplane.” (If you ever tried to learn a language from a particular computer-based lesson, you will understand.) She was frightened, tired, and alone. The American based airline told her husband that the plane was still in Chicago, so he went back to his family’s home.
Someone at the Warsaw airport figured out she needed to use a telephone and found someone to sell her a phone card — she called me to come and get her she was so upset. I can only imagine what would have happened if she had no one to talk to…she was hysterical though hardly mentally disturbed, although she might have appeared so if no one had made an effort to find someone to speak her language. Instead of “tasing” her, the police sent someone to wake her husband and have him come get her. They offered her some food and a place to rest by working to find a common language.
What horrible people some of you are to have so little understanding and to be so quick to judge a person’s actions and to approve of unnecessary state-supported violence – and I say that as someone who worked with the RCMP, and who continue sto work with law enforcement – sometimes, even LEO’s make mistakes; unfortunately as the military model is adopted, the public servant part is de-emphasized.
In the law, a private homeowner isn’t entitled to protect his own property with such potentially deadly force, such as the force applied by the cops here (i.e., the repeated tasering of disoriented man). Why should trigger happy cops always be given the benefit of the doubt. Whatever happened to simply tackling and cuffing the man? Talk about the squeamish and the bleeding hearts! I’m not about to give the benefit of the doubt to cops who believe that they’re entitled to avoid taking an obviously minimal risk–given their numerical superiority–by resorting to a disabling tactic that, given a number of recent deadly incidents involving tasers, presents a clear possibility of delivering a life-threatening shock. Here we see that tactic employed not once, but several times on a man already immobilized. I suppose it must be a part of the police manual to fire away with the taser until the target is not only prone and immobile, but also no longer breathing. Unfortunately such purportedly “non-lethal” weapons as the taser make it that much easier for the cops to avoid doing real thoughtful police work (i.e., to seek an understanding of what’s really going on before resorting to more violent methods) by substituting the quick, supposedly “non-lethal”, but potentially high-risk fall back option. The fact that the gun doesn’t fire a bullet does not mean that pulling the trigger should become the first means of response to any slight perceived provocation. Think back to the way it was used by University of Florida police on a student who was rightfully availing himself of his First Amendment constitutional right to petition his government for redress of grievances. Pretty soon, we’ll see electric cattle prods issued to police to suppress peaceful protests in our streets–protests whose speech is deemed unwelcome by those in power. Those cops are murderers. They need a dose of their own medicine. String em up and send 150,000 volts through their fillings!
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, saw dawn, felt sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up your quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Is It Nothing to You? Lest We Forget
Anyone see what that object he is holding in his hand when he steps in front of the counter just when they use the taser?
uh-oh – looks like the piggies and their families are in full force trying to do damage control on this message board
God help me if I ever enter a country where I don’t speak the language and no one is waiting for me. My frustration might be construed as aggressive, just like this guy.
This should be required watching for authorities on what NOT to do when faced with this situation. Could (should) have been handled much differently.
Those officers were not trained, that is for sure. And tasers should be considered deadly force. Once the guy was down that should have been the end of the tasering, etc. So why was this guy in a holding area for 10 hours?
You can tell the guy isn’t a terrorist because the ACLU wasn’t there in the first hour. Should have been a dead giveaway.
My prayers go out to the guys mother.
What is Law Enforcement suppose to do?
Refrain from using taser? getting closer
possibly subjecting themselves to harm?
Or worse, allowing passenger to be harmed.
This gentlemen, whether by frustration after
10 hour wait, or mental illness, showed
clear signs of aggression, Picking up table,
throwing computer to the floor, and holding
a stapler which can be considered a weapon.
Prayers go out to mother and him for that matter. Also, thanks to Law Enforcement!
I’m sure no one celebrated!!
How is it the defenders of the police leave out the fact that NO CPR WAS GIVEN !!!
its understandable to take him down we know they arent bright enough to comunicate or they would have a real job, but couldnt they remember CPR the basic trainig that most officers get in North America?
callousness is what we see here ,look at the responses some think its a joke,
this short tread gives proof to how easily freedoms are lost anytime someone is killed by the Government we should question why and make shure things are changed for the better afterwards we cannot become sheep and follow along without question, the individual is the most important part of a society.
20 years ago this would not have happened someone would have helped him out people have become transendant and self absorbed we need to wake up and become who we were not so long ago .
the cops had no fear of him before the tazer, some of the 4 even faced away from him, the guy at one point was surrounded by the pigs, at arms length, his back to two of them. they could have easily grabbed him. i was shocked they didn’t grad and cuff him at that point, they back up and tazed him over and over. them the leg on the neck to finish him off.
hell, that lady got closer to him early in the scene, with little fear, and she was an anuarmed passenger!
these cops were out to use there new toy, a lethal tazer, then whent eh poor man is twisting in pain fromt eh shocks, the knee was applied to his neck. no pulse, and they just stand over him, opps, killed another.
four canadian police need to be shot dead for this crime. i actually believe they enjoyed the tazering, they had no need for it, made no attempt to restrain the man dispite having ample chance to do so.
the only justice will be four dead cops.
I will salute the brave person that shots these cops in the head, they need to be removed from society.
the video show it all, wimp punk cop, drunk on power, wanting to teach that poor man a leason. cop, judge, jury, executioner all in one.
tazer ought to be banned, they can be lethal and that is the real problem, no one knows when it will be lethal (of course the kneee on the neck might have been part of it) we have had pigs taze little old ladies, school children etc… dont cops have any balls, are they too afraid of one man when they are in force that they must resort to potentially deadly force? the movie showed no defensive stance prior to the taze, they had no reason to fear him. also not they could have had back up, note the two security guards could have helped tackle that man. that made it six to one!
the actions after he stopped breathing was disgusting, winding up the wires but rendering no help to the man. the pig probably wanted to hide the wires!
thank god for video, no telling what the pigs story would have been had this not been filmed. the film shows murder. I think these pig like torturing folks, get there jollies witht eh stun gun, yeah i am the man.
death to these four pigs.
now if they had x-boxed him, they could have simply restarted play at last checkpoint, but instead he is DEAD, no replay.
pig cops period.
I will remember this next time some canadian politician lectures Americans on how to behave civil.
It is open season on candaians in Poland and Europe.
These killer cops must be punsihed.
Let’s see what we have here…
1. One unarmed suspect, who apparently doesn’t speak English- hostile true, but UNARMED
2. Two English-speaking airport security guards
3. Five English-speaking RCMP’s
This recipe looks familiar. Oh yes, now I remember! It’s the recipe for disaster!
What to do, there’s one of him and only seven of us? What was that security guard saying? The suspect doesn’t speak any English. Oh well, that’s his problem! I mean, everybody knows you shouldn’t travel to a country if you don’t speak their language! Stupid tourist, we’ll teach him!
Now, I vaguely remember there was something in basic training about how to tackle and take down an unarmed suspect, but my memory fails me as to exactly how seven of us can overpower him, so let’s just tase him until he stops breathing. That way we won’t have to worry about him shooting us with his cell phone, that looks like a gun, or any of that regular stuff. All agreed? Let’s go!
Oh oh, he’s not breathing! What should we do? I vaguely remember there was something in basic training about not using the taser reeatedly because it could actually stop a person’s heart, maybe if I keep my knee in his throat that will revive him.
No, that didn’t work, I guess he’s dead. How can we justify this one? I know! We’ll say he was resisting arrest! I mean, after all we did warn that RUSSIAN in ENGLISH didn’t we? All agreed? Let’s go!
You whiners can’t even whine with credibility. So many of you have made claims that never appeared in the article and you want to be taken seriously? Nope.
The guy was out of line, and out of control. He was NOT cuffed when he was Tasered and taken down, and he CONTINUED TO RESIST even after being Tasered and taken down.
You whiners take his side because he was being held for 10 hours in a foreign country before he went ballistic? Get real, you sissies. No sane person is going to behave that way. The guy was a menace.
Some of you say he was walking away. I saw a person behaving in a socially and mentally unstable manner, trying to walk away from Law Enforcement Officers. The LEOs had every right to halt his departure, and they did so.
He got a knee to the neck because he was RESISTING. Unfortunately he stopped resisting because he was dead, but in the end, he caused his own death.
The Taser didn’t kill him, so the call for Tasers to be banned is just ridiculous.
Whether you’re in your native land or in another country, you WILL do LEOs tell you to do, or you get to suffer for your idiocy. Even if you don’t understand what they’re saying, a sane person will submit. You don’t walk away, and you don’t resist. That could get you killed.
So WHAT if he was being held for 10 hours? That doesn’t give him the right to go ballistic. Period.
And for those of you who don’t get it, it’s probably because you’re a criminal who doesn’t like LEOs. I’m sure your sad little life reflects your stupidity.
No Dave. YOU’re the pig. Get back in your pen with the rest of the trash.
This is a murder of a totally innocent person. Anyone who, under extreme stress, loses control of their emotions in a public place could be a victim of fatal police brutality such as this. What the f–k are these thugs protecting with deadly force, office equipment?

Tazed and confused…
Anyone who says you’re a “bleeding heart Liberal” because you disagree with the way this situation was handled is a complete moron!!!!
I have handled tougher situations than a frustrated man with FAR less force. I have to deal with screaming fits and murderous kids who are not afraid to truly try to kill you and I’m not armed with anything! Why hit him with the tazer the second time? For that matter, why hit him with it the first time? He was just holding a stapler! The worst he could have done with it is throw it at one of them and that wasn’t happening!
Are these boys afraid of calling for an interpreter? If the guy had someone there who understood him, he wouldn’t have had nearly that much trouble communicating what he needed!
Interpreters and/or common sense would have saved this man’s life!
Yep, deserves to die…Since when have cops been give this right, is it their 60 college credits from the community college and less than average IQ’s that bestow this “honor”? Ironically, commenting about it on this website is about all the further I will go with it; but when will we stop accepting this behavior from those who are supposed to “protect and serve”, what a joke?

It is the classic cop method of thinning out the herd. They have absolutely no compassion. The guy is obviously mentally ill and doesn’t speak English. So instead of looking for someone who speaks the language or a psychiatric professional or even a tranquilizer dart for heavens sake they decide to taser him. Then he reacts to the pain, clutching his stomach and writhing on the floor. Cops reaction? Hit him again. They are such pussies. Four men can’t cuff a half paralyzed man? Sick. Apparently if you give a group of people a license to kill they will freely use it. Putting your knee on someone’s neck is a good start. Do they learn that in school? Maddening!
Anyone stop to think for a minute that maybe it was the knee to the neck that killed him? Just a thought…

Are RCMP not trained in non violent intervention? There are ways to incapacitate a man without risking harm. I have this training as a teacher and have only used it once. You would think that police officers, who come across this sort of thing on a regular basis would be trained! Even if they’re not, a person of limited intelligence would know not to put your leg on someone’s neck to hold them down! He didn’t even need to hold him down, he had been tasered! I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the police’s efforts to restrain him that killed him, not the taser. This is appalling.
“Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.†– Isaac Asimov
In the first place, who wouldn’t go mental for being held for 10hours and you don’t even know why.
And that “smart” lady who tried to calm him down? For all you know what she said meant something bad in his language.
Yes, the police are doing their job by trying to subdue him. But did they really need to taser him twice? He was already wincing on the ground and with one one or two officers holding him down. Besides, I doubt many people would survive a knee-in-the-neck.
To all those who supports the police, If you went to a foreign country and don’t speak the language. And they hold you there for 10hours without even trying to communication in your language. Taser you once, hold you down while you are wincing in pain. Then taser you again and hold you down with his knee on your neck. And then unfortunately, you die.
Now what do you think?
hey guess what, murder-endorsers? you’re racists. what if he were a fetus? outrageous! it didn’t even have the chance to be deemed ‘trash’ by the rest of you and disposed of in the proper manner! how about you get suffocated to death, and the rest of us can applaud. then we’ll all have a good laugh at how ignorant you are. sorry, were. it’s ok, i know how scared you are to die. but that’s not my problem, right? hitler would be proud of you.
Re: the taser incident in the Vancouver airport….
There have been a lot of comments about the Police use of force in this incident. I am quite sure that no one involved could possibly believe this man should have lost his life for his obvious failure to comply…. it is a sad story indeed.
Yet I am left to wonder what likely would have happened to that man or any of us if we refused to obey the obvious authority of men in uniform in his country or perhaps most countries of the world?
When I last travelled I saw men in army camouflage fully armed…. with what looked like very serious weapons… and this was in a U.S. airport!
Do you think we could expect a tasering, which obviously has a lower element of risk for permanent harm than lethal force for similar actions… hardly!
We know violence and refusal to comply with the authorities cannot be tolerated in any airport in the world today.
The lesson for us….do what you are instructed by the authorities whether at home or while visiting other countries as I am sure they will be even less tolerant of our refusal to comply.

belligerant disrespect and wanton destruction of property merits this kind of action, he clearly showed hostility to people, and refused to comply, he walked away from officers. If I was an officer, I wouldn’t put my life at risk because he is a raving lunatic. He took his chances, unfortunately it didnt work out for him.
