‘Don’t Buy Gas From This Ass’: Chavez Billboard Raises Eyebrows

"He called my president the devil so I don't like him. He's in with Iran's president and he hates America. That's the main thing," the owner of the billboard said.

It’s a good start…if Chavez keeps playing footsie with the mad mullahs, put up another billboard down the road that reads:
‘Kick his ass, take back the gas’.

“Ass” is a bad word? Anyone seen prime-time tv lately? Anyway, that is as patriotic a billboard as one may see these days. Keep up the good work!

Maybe this is a transatlanticcultural/linguistic issue but I can’t see what the fuss is all about. ‘Ass’ means ‘donkey’ and has been used as a pejorative term for a fool for centuries as far back as Shakespeare. ‘Don’t be such an ass’ = ‘don’t be such a moron’. It’s insulting but not remotely rude. The meaning ‘posterior’ is entirely separate and is not implied by the wording of the ad. Similarly ‘bum’ can mean a ‘down and out’/'beggar’/'idler’ and also means ‘bottom’/'posterior’. BTW the guy is right: Hugo Chavez is a moron!

Deniece   October 19th, 2007 - 7:10 am

Way to go!!!!!!!

joser   October 19th, 2007 - 7:28 am

Chavez truly is an ass. All owners of billboards that are idle in America ought to be as patriotic as John is and do the same. Hurt the doughy Chavez in his pocketbook and watch him change his tune. Although some of America’s politicians may reserve comment on bad teeth Chavez, the American people should make their opinion of him known.

Larry Kelley   October 19th, 2007 - 9:54 am

OK, since we have such a bunch of politically correct, pansy, donkey butts (is that better?), why not replace the word with a picture of a donkey backside? I have always heard a pictue is worth a thousand words. I would say north-end of a south-bound donkey, but I doubt these folks who are so upset would understand the implication.

Paul F   October 19th, 2007 - 3:14 pm

Paul B is right!

Chavez took oil from his people, called it his own, and gave it to a few poor folks for good press. Therefore, I will ignore all the tyranical things he is doing. I will ignore yet another south american dictator rising up to crush the economy of his country by nationalizing everything political opponents own… because I got some free heating oil. I will ignore the prisons full of political protestors, the destructoin of speech rights in Chavez’s nation, and that Chavez is as antisemetic as Ron Paul and Hitler and Ahmedinijad all because of a story I read in the NYT about heating oil.

President Chavez is trying to help his people. At least he is trying to implement a real form of democracy on the ground, despite attempts by the American Dictator Bush to undermine him.
Go to Venezuala and see for yourself. President Chavez is devolving real power to communities in Venezuala to take responsibility for their own development. Extremist american propaganda will do nothing to change the reality of the achievements of the true democrats of South America.

Dan Kauffman   October 20th, 2007 - 8:07 am

I got my CITGO card some time back because they did not use MidEast Oil, Now I think Chavez is expletive deleted, but so far all he has done is say bad things.

So where do I buy gas now? From that lowlife or from others and risk some of the money ending up purchasing explosives to blow up our troops and innocent civilians?
It’s a dilema, anyone have a suggestion???

What other conclusion could an average US citizen come to except that Mr. Chavez is supposed to be evil? You don’t hear too often about Venezuela lifting millions out of poverty, making national elections cleaner — and winning 5 of them with a big majority since 1998, building schools instead of cutting their funding. Funny thing about that.

And extra points to the local broadcaster: she beats out just about everybody, including John Stewart, by pronouncing CHavez like CHolcolate. like Chief of State.

Cobra   October 20th, 2007 - 1:29 pm

Marimbadearco, So, to a lefty libtard its okay to supress free speech, imprision political opponents, rig elections, deny basic democratic rights to millions, ally with militant islam, hoard wealth, destroy free markets, use the media to spread propaganda, just so long as you provide “free” social programs? Lemme guess; you’re voting for Hillary.

CarolaVE   October 20th, 2007 - 2:21 pm

Hey, some of you American that support this ASS who is Chavez… I am Venezuelan and things are NOT the way you think it is… this is a president who doesn’t really help Venezuelan that’s is all propaganda. Clean election in Venezuela? what a joke! somebody here said that in this forum, misinformation! in fact the current vice-president of Venezuela was the same guy who was the president of the national election commission, does it tell you something? he was supposed to be imparcial.

Nestor   October 20th, 2007 - 3:07 pm

US citizens, please be aware: Chavez is leading an international leftist armed movement, that is SUPPORRTED by the WarDogs of Washington, the only ones that could profit from this insane situation. So, if you all want to sleep well, not having to worry about more TERRORISM, you should begin to DEMAND that US STOPS buying oil form Venezuela, STOP letting Mr. Carter to do stupid things in Venezuela, and STOP supporting any electoral outcome to our CRISIS, just because the voting machines and fake ID cards are widely CONTROLLED by the GOVERNMENT.

Some people just can’t handle that their position, once majority in elections, is now a shrinking minority. WE in US should demand same balloting as Venez.: electronic vote punched in; then written ballot printed; you confirm both, then register electronic; then place written ballot in cardboard box, like elections were before computers. Then have almost 20% of these boxes hand-counted with rep.s from both sides present. Ohio would’ve been different in 2004 with that system in place.

Check out http://www.Venezuelanalysis.com for a Venez. majority viewpoint.

Hugo is a bad man because he is against the North American Union and is making a stand for the sovereignty of his nation.

That’s the reason they “hate him”, he is standing in the way of “progress”.

If you choose to believe the propaganda coming out of our TV’s here in the states… Well… Don’t blame the average Nazi for their country’s wrong doing; you’ve got your head farther up your ass than they did.

rockfort   October 27th, 2007 - 8:47 pm

jacob larson   October 30th, 2007 - 6:47 pm

Hey, I’m not thrilled to see the word a** on a public billboard, I’ve got two kids and frankly that is something I would think is inappropriate. However, I think the overall message IS good! Chavez is a socialist and the liberal left support him at Americas expense! More and more average Americans need to say that they against socialism. Socialism disease that is spread by liberal parasites! http://www.larson-official.com

hardrock38   October 31st, 2007 - 8:56 am

It’s hard to believe the ones in here standing up for Chavez. He is an enemy of our country by his own account. He is best friends with Fidel Castro. All the anti- American talk going on. How did you people get into this country and why do you stay here? Don’t let the door hit you in the a#* on your way out!!!

The man is a dictator, and only dupes and traitors would support him.

If you were a dupe, consider yourself educated and welcome to the light. If you still support him, see you at the barricades. I’ll be the one with the Mossberg.

john   November 10th, 2007 - 11:47 pm

I’m dumbfounded by the fuss over the word ass. As Liam pointed out words often have several meanings and one definition of ass is donky which makes perfect sense for this ad. Did they have to seek out these people who objected or is the general public that backward in the south? Either way it’s unsettling.

Joseph in OK   November 12th, 2007 - 5:48 am

I am amazed that people here are sticking up for Chavez — the same people that Chavez hates. In turn, they attack our president who is one of the few in the world taking REAL action to spread freedom and democracy. Hopefully these people are equally stupid in the voting booth as they are here and punch the wrong chad again.

Dai Uy   November 26th, 2007 - 9:53 am

I understand that Citgo is changing their name in some communities because of the backlash. Hopefully, our media will continue to track this story disclosing the name changes.

If each American would set as a pesonal voluntary goal a 20% reduction in energy consumption, then high prices would go down significantly. This goal obviously may not be possible for all families or commercial interests but it would be a good standard for most who could do the same.

Luis   November 29th, 2007 - 11:30 am

WAY TO GO!!!

IF WE ALL STOPPED BUYING CITGO GAS FOR 90 DAYS , THAT MORON CHAVEZ WOULD NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO WASTE ON GUNS AND HIS OWN PEOPLE AT PDVSA WOULD KICK HIM OUT OF OFFICE.

OUR BIGGEST WEAPON IS OUR PURCHASING POWER, THE GREATEST THE WORLD HS EVER KNOWN!
