This is not just typical of the sub-human slim FOX hires and calls “reporters”, but typical of FOX as a whole. They try to make it all look good by suspending the Hispanic lady when the story was obviously approved by the white editors and news staff too…

Doug   October 18th, 2007 - 11:15 am

MAry, why are you such a racist? How do you know that the editors are white. They should check this mexican reporters green card she is most certian an illegal.

denny   October 18th, 2007 - 12:10 pm

That was obviously an ambush. Was that lady just chilling in the sporting goods store parking lot when she noticed some old guy coming out and thought, “Hey, I know him!!”? This guy is a vet, a business owner. What is she? Everything that is disgusting, sub-human, and dehumanizing about our media.

Scott   October 18th, 2007 - 12:16 pm

She should be fired, or better yet, tossed over the fence of his junk yard, after all he has a new shot gun. They work so much better when they’re new.

Andrea   October 18th, 2007 - 12:21 pm

She should be fired. Standing inside his door so that he can not leave and asking questions in such a biased manor should not be tolerated by any news organization.

Tim   October 18th, 2007 - 12:48 pm

Mary your a dope, “obviously approved by White editors”. As they say it is better to be thought as a moron than to open your mouth and prove it. You need to take a look and recognize your racist and ignorant comments that your suggesting about others.

N. Hiltner   October 18th, 2007 - 1:01 pm

This is why I hate the news and journalism as it is today. She was NOT unbiased when she spoke that way to him. She let the viewer know HER feelings, and it is not about HER, but about him! Katie Couric does the same thing, you always know where she stands. This woman attacked this poor guy.

Barry   October 18th, 2007 - 1:02 pm

Yep I shot to kill what ya want me to get sued when I shoot to wound?

Jay   October 18th, 2007 - 1:02 pm

I say send this guy down to our border to help out with national security. Maybe if he was there we wouldn’t have to put up with unbelievable people like Rebecca Aguilar.

Jimmy   October 18th, 2007 - 1:02 pm

That was a cross examination *NOT* reporting. Sadly typical of FOX news practices. This guy has been robbed repeatedly trying to make a living when obviously the police could/would not help him. I’ll bet the police are watching his place a lot more closely now though.

Barry   October 18th, 2007 - 1:07 pm

Ya’ll know where MRSA comes from don’t ya?
some Nations in the south sell antibiotics at grocery stores this breeds super Staph then the folks down yonder drift north and become TV reporters.

True   October 18th, 2007 - 1:13 pm

Let Rebecca Aguilar know that her biased reporting sucks. rebecca.aguilar@foxtv.com

Rebecca, I’d like to see your response to multiple thefts if you were a small business owner. No, maybe these gentlemen did not deserve to die…but they made the decision to commit a crime. If you do not want to die on the business end of a shotgun, don’t make piss-poor decisions like that.

Dana   October 18th, 2007 - 1:15 pm

More power to the old man…killed those worthless scumbags! Its called JUSTICE, Ms Aguilar. I hope she gets fired.

Mike   October 18th, 2007 - 1:15 pm

A fair question this reporter could have asked was, “What is it these home invaders could have done to you that was so dangerous?” She would then realize how idiotic her obvious assumptions were. Thank God a feeble old man like this is in a country that allows him to have firearms to protect himself.

Ron   October 18th, 2007 - 1:16 pm

Scurrilous reporting and reporters like Rebecca Aguilar should be fired! The Fox stations in our area are more balanced in reporting.

Greg   October 18th, 2007 - 1:16 pm

Typical bleeding heart liberal. Perhaps she needs to experience the terror of having someone break into her property and avail themselves of her valuables. Would she sit back and watch or would she fight? My guess is that she would cower in the corner like the gutless punk she is.

Steven   October 18th, 2007 - 1:16 pm

It would have been incredibly satisfying for him to have slapped the ….. hard in the face. It’s hard to believe this country has changed so much that some people believe any person who defends his home deserves interrogation. The home is one place where you should be able to feel secure and justified in doing what it takes to keep it that way.

CrazyGeorge   October 18th, 2007 - 1:17 pm

Reeebecca Ahh Geee Laaah Raaaza

I wonder how many Mexican murderers she treats this way?

And Fox of course did the right thing and suspended her. Hopefully, she will be fired and can go to work for a Spanish speaking station where she can sh_t all over white people without censorship.

Cracks me up the idiots in here who jump right on Fox about this. The only people who think Fox is NOT fair and balanced are those who dont watch it.

Ay Uaxe   October 18th, 2007 - 1:18 pm

This reporter should be fired, not just suspended. What she did shows that she is more interested in pursuing an agenda of attacking and harrassing people who defend themselves than she is in reporting news. Let Sarah Brady or some other fool pay her, if that’s what she wants to do.

Scot   October 18th, 2007 - 1:21 pm

She needs to be fired. Typical heartless liberal.

Steve   October 18th, 2007 - 1:22 pm

News Directors will tell you to follow people and get the story any way possible. I’m sure this is what she was told to do in the news meeting.

Then, after she gets the story, the station actually aired it, meaning that they had no problem with the content when they reviewed it during the pre-broadcast screening.

Then, after the backlash, they suspend the reporter whose work they actually aired.

I didn’t like the way it went down – or the questions she asked – but let’s not pretend that she wasn’t doing exactly what she is paid to do.

A lot of news directors and editors are nutless wusses who command their reporters to do things, and don’t stand behind them when the crap hits the fan.

Whoever assigned the story to her should likewise be suspended.

jerry   October 18th, 2007 - 1:24 pm

sleaze, she should be working for the enquirer or some other yellow rag.

blame hofmann   October 18th, 2007 - 1:24 pm

Pathetic behavior on the part of the reporter. I wonder if she would ask her grandfather the same questions, if he were in the same situation. Disgusting.

True   October 18th, 2007 - 1:26 pm

From and ABC article:
“Police say Walton shot and killed Raul Laureles about three weeks ago after Laureles climbed through a pried-open window of the business. That incident also was referred to a grand jury.”

Hmmm, is this ambush retaliation for Raul’s death 3 week prior?

It’s his home, Rebecca! Would you welcome intruders into your home with open arms and warm cocoa?

Spare me.   October 18th, 2007 - 1:29 pm

This is a LOCAL fox affiliate, it has nothing to do with the FOXNEWS your moron liberals love to slander at any chance you get. Learn your facts, they will spare imbeciles like Mary (and just about every Mexican in America) from making more comments like that.

The Diff   October 18th, 2007 - 1:29 pm

This is the bold new world of America-we are going to have to make the crimials afraid of us- it is easy to do-they are cowards, preying on the old and infirm-lets get it on

Robert Stanton   October 18th, 2007 - 1:30 pm

This woman should be fired!!
How dare she, arrogant, ignorant, attack this old man for defending his property and his life against criminal scum!
He should get a medal. Her mindset is typical of brainwashed liberals indoctrinated with lies that undermine the citizen’s sacred right to self defense.
Her tactics and demeanor were despicable.

Stephen   October 18th, 2007 - 1:32 pm

I only wish that she would have gone to his business after hours and the old man could add a third notch to his tally. This pinhead reporter needs to take her progaganda act to Mexico City where it belongs.

DRM   October 18th, 2007 - 1:32 pm

This woman should be fired.

Maybe the NRA can help force the local police to return the man’s shotguns to him. He should not have to go out and buy another one.

This man should be given a medal by the mayor.

Any of you whiny leftist liberals understand what it took to build this country?? I doubt it so I’ll tell you. It took strong individualists standing up for themselves and taking action against the bad guys (the bad guys are the ones who scaled this mans fence in the dead of night).
You do not negotiate with burglars in the dark of night and you do not shoot to wound an intruder. Anyone that would do that is just stupid. Break into my place and see what you get.

If I knew this man I would buy him an extra box of Buckshot and offer him my congratulations on some fine shooting. The criminal population needs to be thinned out some.

This 70 year old man isnt the bad guy here. This reporterette should be fired and her station should offer an apology.

James   October 18th, 2007 - 1:34 pm

I was watching FOX with my wife when that aired. I couldn’t believe they aired such trash. So biased in its questioning, prodding, goading, then asking him to apologize! Her demeanor was, how dare you shoot someone who was just stealing from you for the 45th time. “Aren’t you sorry? Our viewers want to know” I don’t want to ever see her face or hear her voice on FOX again!

ART   October 18th, 2007 - 1:36 pm

THIS REPORTER IS FOLLOWING A RACIST AGENDA AND SHOULD BE FIRED NOT SUSPENDED

Will E   October 18th, 2007 - 1:37 pm

She’s a news reporter. Isn’t she considered retarded by mere association?

Aren’t tv reporters 3rd on the evolutionary chart, after cavemen & radio personalitites?

David   October 18th, 2007 - 1:40 pm

This hack will have zero future in the news business assuming she handles herself in the same manner moving forward.

If this guy killed two black or brown skinned thieves stealing his stuff, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Jerry Rivera would’ve been screaming ‘RACIST’ and the press would be on this like rats on cheese. But since a white guy shot two white guys………the silence is deafening.

In the end, it has nothing to do with race~trash is trash regardless of skin color~and nothing to do with the network station for whom she works. She’s a trashy, no talent, hate-baiter (I can’t call her a reporter as she clearly doesn’t know how to ‘report’ the news or interview prospective news contributors) and this respected military veteran & US Citizen simply leveraged his Second Amendment rights.

It looked like a Remington 870 box he put in the car. Good shotgun, will last him a long time and definitely won’t jam on him the next time he has to use it! :)

mario   October 18th, 2007 - 1:40 pm

He should have used his new shotgun and shot her Mexican ass(lol). It looked like she was trying to break into his car while interrigating him. So, in her opinion, he should have left those scum bags rob him or possibley cause bodily harm when they broke into his property. I wonder what Ms. Aguilar would have done, given if she were under the same situation.

crimesweepers   October 18th, 2007 - 1:43 pm

Remember this is a Fox LOCAL affiliate, not the network, so these stations can (and are) swarming with this type of liberal trash, I hope they fire the illegal? bee-otch. I bet this same reporter would go easy on a mexican national who rapes and kills an American citizen by asking “is it tough to live in the shadows of all these hating, racist gringos and is that what forced you to lash out and make a mistake?”

SoylentBob   October 18th, 2007 - 1:45 pm

This is why I moved to Nevada, to leave California behind! From the top-down its overrun with Liberals, and from the bottem-up its being over-run with illegal Mexicans and latinos. In Nevada, I just got my CCW (Carry Concealed Weapons) permit Vs. California, where only the Criminals (and Diane Feinstein) get to have handguns.

In Rural Nevada, if you break into somebodys home, try to car-jack them, or rob some one or some store, you are liable to GET SHOT!

What the TV lady did was wrong, and she will prolly get canned for it.

That old man ought to have taken the heads off those guys, LITERALLY, and mounted them on posts ontop of his fences…

Deterance works.

While the police are going through the motions, you just gotta believe that they are cheering him on inside cause he has a winning score of 2-0 vs criminals lately. Good for him.

Ray Ramirez   October 18th, 2007 - 1:46 pm

What a sick woman, this so called journalist!
The biggest shame is that in all likelihood, she probably believes she is doing good work, but harassing this man, who deserves nothing short of ABSOLUTE PRAISE for his heroism. This made protected himself, his property, his livelihood and prevented the scumbag from every doing harm to anyone again.

That my friends makes Dallas a safer and indeed better place!

I’m just glad the criminal was white, so we dont have to hear about how this was a hate crime! What a bunch of sick, sick people!

Jack   October 18th, 2007 - 1:46 pm

Steve, You are obviously misguided and inexperienced in the news business. No self respecting News director tells a reporter to ambush and entrap and to report like a cross examiner as opposed to a petty reporter.
BUT STEVE the funniest thing you assume is this:
“Then, after she gets the story, the station actually aired it, meaning that they had no problem with the content when they reviewed it during the pre-broadcast screening.”
You actually think they review all stories before they air…. excuse me I got to get a tissue and wipe the tears after laughing so hard. You sound like a typical liberal expecting big brother to look after individual actions, to blame the system not the person for their actions.
Go read “MEDIA doesn’t MATTERs” and enjoy the misinterpretations and flasehoods that you are so fond of creating yourself.

SickofitAll   October 18th, 2007 - 1:49 pm

She’s trying to show herself to be pushy enough to take Katie Couric’s place, when they finally boot her off CBS Evening News.
This is the same rude tactic Katie took with President Bush #41, which catapulted her into “Best in Show” in her breed category.

Todd   October 18th, 2007 - 1:49 pm

I live in the area, and have never liked her slant on any story she covers. Name the subject of the story, and take the liberal side, and you have her report. If you think this is bad, imagine her covering stories about illegals. She should be ashamed at the way she treated this old man.

Jerry Pomeroy   October 18th, 2007 - 1:50 pm

Ms. Aguilar’s interrogation skills should be utilized at GITMO, not as a “reporter.” Her obvious bias puts one more nail in the mainstream media’s coffin. Whatever happened to “who, what, when, where and why?” Journalistic education has fallen on hard times.

Steve   October 18th, 2007 - 1:50 pm

Jack,

I’ve been in the news business for 15 years. I have dealt with my share of spineless news directors and editors who assign things, but don’t back up their reporters.

Again, I didn’t like her line of questioning, and think it was reprehensible. But she’s not the root problem…she’s just a symptom. Her bosses are the real problem.

Sorry we disagree, but let’s not go ad hominem here. I’m nowhere near liberal. But thanks for attacking me.

Steve

David   October 18th, 2007 - 1:51 pm

Enough with the racial hatred comments about the reporter folks. It simply exacerbates the problem.

She SUCKS, that’s agreed upon by all. Her nationality doesn’t matter.

Maureen   October 18th, 2007 - 1:54 pm

I think that the reporter was doing her job, although her nasty remark about killing was over the top. She did not seem to “force” herself on the old man. He ,too, did his job and protected himself and his property. Seems like the American way,to me.

Clay   October 18th, 2007 - 1:55 pm

What about the editors and producers that let this biased report hit the air? I think the whole station needs disinfecting.

mark   October 18th, 2007 - 1:56 pm

Hard to believe so much ANGER in the comments (Mexican b*tch, c*nt, etc.). All conservatives seem to be so full of misdirected anger. Do you all think that your petty little lives would be any better without any illegals in the country? Maybe the fact that your own lives are unfulfilled is related to your own sub-human personalities.

Eric   October 18th, 2007 - 1:56 pm

OK… its obvious this woman didn’t do her homework.

A) It is not possible, at short distances, to shoot to wound with a shotgun. Any appendage hit is lost; a shot to the body will put a 3+ inch hole all the way through.

B) trigger happy? does she even know what the term means? Imagine you’re 70+ and some thug sees you with a shotgun. They think you won’t shoot, so they come at you. What do you do, use foul language?

This is obviously an anti-gun liberal that thinks the poor guy is a war-mongering freak that wants to kill people, instead of a law abiding citizen protecting his life and property.

She should be fired. And possibly prosecuted for libel and harrasement.

Michael Lohr   October 18th, 2007 - 1:57 pm

Suspension is not enough. She should be fired. She clearly does not know the difference between an interrogation and and interview. That said, there are editors that are above her. They are the ones that decide what should be on the air and how it should be presented. They also should be fired for not having the sense to know that this piece should of never been aired. It is time for these supposed journalist, both Liberal and Conservative, to stop using the Media as a forum for their biases. Just report the News and let us decide.

Mike   October 18th, 2007 - 1:59 pm

Sadly, this is not about Fox, but about all reporters. There isn’t a reporter out there who has the class that reporters of the 70s and 80s had -

Lesli   October 18th, 2007 - 2:00 pm

70 year old man crying in his car and his arms shaking – that reporter was harrassing and cruel and should lose her job. He had every right to shoot anyone who climbs an 8 foot fence into his property. The police can’t protect us anymore.

Steve   October 18th, 2007 - 2:00 pm

Mike,

There are some reporters who have the class of the old-school reporters, but they are quickly shouted down by their shrill colleagues. Management keeps telling them to be “more like X,” always the most emotional and biased reporter at the station.

That’s local news for you.

David   October 18th, 2007 - 2:06 pm

Mark, I believe your comments are misdirected, sir… As a moderate Republican who has now posted twice in this string that it’s not a RACE issue (see above), your generalizations are offensive. My life is not petty sir, nor is my personality sub-human (where do you get that bro?) but thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to make bland, pithy comments.

I guess the positive spin is that without the Second Amendment protecting your right to free speech, none of the comments on this board would be tolerated by the government (think China, Burma, etc.)!!!

Jack   October 18th, 2007 - 2:10 pm

I want to know what parts of “keep and bear arms” the local police do not understand. Unless, and until, this man is entitled to his lawful property, namely his firearms.

Return this man his firearms.

Steven   October 18th, 2007 - 2:11 pm

None of the anger here is ‘misdirected’, Mark. It has a perfectly valid target. When there is a backlash against an obvious wrong it at least means people are paying attention. Who cares about a little harsh language.

crimesweepers   October 18th, 2007 - 2:12 pm

Mark, I am CERTAIN that our “petty” lives would be better, MUCH better without illegals !!! If I have to pay $5 for a head of lettuce, so be it !!! Get them out NOW!!!!!!!

CrazyGeorge   October 18th, 2007 - 2:15 pm

Two things havent been mentioned:

1) The other criminal shot dead by this business owner was named “Raul” Anyone think if his name had been “Timothy” that Miss Ageelaaraazaa would’ve done the story?

2) She says in the story that “He didnt want us to show his face because he was worried about reprisals.” THis was after they CLEARLY showed his face.

I hope the old vet sues the beetch.

Kenneth M   October 18th, 2007 - 2:19 pm

Expect to see more behavior like this in the future, as our country embraces and encourages the success of soul-less, GOD-less individuals who have no reason or motivation to serve any interests aside from their own. This woman doesn’t belong on Television. Farnsworth would be turning in his grave if he knew television was being used to harass the elderly. This man had every right to defend himself from the obviously dangerous men who broke into his business and he doesn’t need to be questioned for exercising his right to keep and bare arms, especially not from an unqualified scum bag like this woman. Disgraceful.

Indians Sweep   October 18th, 2007 - 2:21 pm

If no warrant is issued, will this fact prominently be reported by this station?
Perhaps someone should throw a pile of loaded questions at this reporter, and then air them. For example: “Why do you support criminal behavior?” “Are any of your relatively criminals? Have you ever committed any criminal acts?” And then close with something along the lines of “Her station has suspended her and is investigating if this or other acts of incompetence warrant a permanent dismissal. John Doe reporting.”

See how that reporter likes being on the other end of this type of news coverage.

lee m   October 18th, 2007 - 2:24 pm

At least Fox has suspended her and hopefully will fire her. The other drive by networks would/have NEVER take an action against their reporters that have done the same thing.

GO FOX !! Keep up the good work !!

joe   October 18th, 2007 - 2:25 pm

Just another so called reporter who’s true leftists gun control feelings came out! How disgusting this piece of garbage is! She is badgering a poor old man who wishes he never would have to do this in the first place!

Lianna   October 18th, 2007 - 2:35 pm

I’m saddened by all the name calling in this commentary.

I’m also saddened by the fact that anyone would harrass this older man. He obviously did not want to talk, and he was obviously trying to leave. She stood in the doorway, preventing him from going. What’s even worse is that, had he pushed her away from his car, it is he that would have been in trouble.

I agree that she should be suspended, and I think she should be fired.

If what a previous poster stated is true (that not all stories are previewed before they are aired), then a review of policy is in order. This kind of story should not be aired–ever.

I don’t care who it was in the car or who the reporter was. The behavior of the reporter should NEVER be harrassing or vindictive.

Matt   October 18th, 2007 - 2:38 pm

It is standard police work to confiscate a firearm after a shooting. They should be returned to him after the investigation is complete.
Firearms should be tax deductible…hooah

docgary   October 18th, 2007 - 2:39 pm

I have made contact with officers involved in Mr Lawson’s case and expect a call from the victim.
I have made a committment to purchase, as a gift, a semi-auto shotgun (Rem 1187) with an upgrade by Wilson/Scattered Tech for tactical applications
(large bolt handles, safty and extended mag)

I hope Mr Lawson takes me up on this offer -

This story and its exploitation by the reporter should get legs and go national. People must see
how the powerless are getting abused by liberal thinking do gooders. The illegal confiscation of weapons from folks after Katrina is an example of stories getting swept under the rug. The fact that the Louisiana Supreme court found the N.O. police guilty of 2nd amendment rights hardly made the news.

Docgary

Paul the Great   October 18th, 2007 - 2:39 pm

Mr. Walton is a hero. Two criminals are gone and will never commit a crime again. That I guarantee!! No telling how many future crimes and lives Mr. Walton saved and prevented because he stood his ground. Good riddance to those dirt bags. Too bad hid didn’t get the other 40 that broke in. All the previous ones were probable the same three guys.

Johnnie   October 18th, 2007 - 2:42 pm

Why isn’t she interrogating the gang-bangers to find out what their trigger happy fingers all about instead of some old guy trying to protect what he’s busted has ass for. Or, maybe Mary will do it and report back to us.

Tim El Cigaro   October 18th, 2007 - 2:43 pm

She dosen’t deserve the title of journalist. She was supposed to be a “reporter” and she failed at that too. She has demonstrated that she dosen’t understand what reporting is all about. I hope she learns something from her suspension.

Murphys Law   October 18th, 2007 - 2:44 pm

Mr. Walton is a brave man who stood his ground.

I do not weep for the scum he dispatched to the great salvage yard in the sky.

Upset   October 18th, 2007 - 2:44 pm

I agree that this isn’t about an individual news company’s practices. This is all TV news nowadays.

As mentioned before, his wishes not to be shown on TV for fear of reprisal was not honored. He also stated when he first got in the car that he would not talk to her on camera. Next thing you know, the camera angle changes (out of his line of sight), and there they are discussing the situation.

This lady has no journalistic integrity whatsoever. Your right to privacy means nothing when compared to their right to earn a buck. Suspending one reporter amounts to nothing, because there is another grease ball in the bull pen waiting to be the next “investigative reporter”.

She’ll move to another city and get another job doing the same thing for someone else.

Justa Thought   October 18th, 2007 - 2:49 pm

She KNEW he was getting/had gotten a gun.

Does anyone but me believe she did this to get his new gun taken away too?

The Truth   October 18th, 2007 - 2:50 pm

i feel bad for the gentleman, to be in a situation where you’re forced to shoot an intruder. but his right to bear arms may well have saved his life. as for the reporting, it’s pitiful. the main culprits, though, are the producers at the affiliate — they aired the piece. rebecca aguilar obviously had a biased approach, or is simply a lousy reporter, but she should have been reprimanded by her producer, not the public. irresponsible all the way around.

Bye Bye Rebecca   October 18th, 2007 - 2:52 pm

Hurray! Get her off the air permanently. She is terrible.

That guy is a hero, plain and simple.

Wong B. Wright   October 18th, 2007 - 2:58 pm

Steve is right on the mark about the news room here folks. I was also in the news industry for nearly 30 years and what you saw is EXACTLY what reporters are expected to do by their BOSSES. The actual tack you take is up to you, but make no mistake, her newsroom managment was just as culpable as she was. VERY few stories (even by the most veteran reporters) go on the air without at least SOME cursory lookover by senior management be it a senior producer, executive producer or news director.

This reporter crossed the line and knew what she was doing. She should now reap the criticism. However, if you think it just stops at her, then you’re just fooling yourself. The bigger problem is that for young reporters coming in, this style of reporting is what they are taught from the first day their in the newsroom. They don’t have the benefit of experience in how to do a story like this any other way.

If you don’t like how this reporter behaved, then get ready. You haven’t seen anything yet. This is what local news is getting to. Take it from me (and probably Steve, if he agrees) who’ve lived it.

FIRE HER   October 18th, 2007 - 2:59 pm

I would of done the same thing as Mr Walton.

dfw resident   October 18th, 2007 - 2:59 pm

Matthew Bruder   October 18th, 2007 - 3:05 pm

A typical American. Remorse for having had to kill, but not afraid to defend himself. The police do not protect or stop crime. They just investigate after the fact. You have to defend yourself. If you think someone else is going to take on your responsibility, you will be killed. The socialist-communist reporter should consider her options, if placed in a similar situation. Shame on her for bothering the man; she is without conscience.

Ken Edwards   October 18th, 2007 - 3:06 pm

Several of you have referred to this man “as an old guy” some in other ways referring to his age. Well, I am 70 and Army vet, still skiing, and if you think all people at 70 are old or feeble, then this story should set you strait! He may be 70 but he is not some old feeble man if he can ward of buglers with a shotgun. What would you be saying if he was 30??

Diane   October 18th, 2007 - 3:07 pm

Journalism 101, state the FACTS not your opinion. She’s such an idiot.

Robin   October 18th, 2007 - 3:07 pm

The reporter should be fired. The news station should never have allowed that segment to be aired. More and more it is obvious that the Senior citizens have more guts than the majority of the younger generation. The young need to get a backbone and stand up for what is right. He defended his home, business and well being. The age of appeasement has got to end or our future dies out with the last of the truly brave. Go Senior citizens!

Torpedo8   October 18th, 2007 - 3:07 pm

Nice job of baggering the old man, too bad he didn’t die of a heart attack right there.

Too bad he did buy some shells and cap the News Tart.

Old White Guy   October 18th, 2007 - 3:11 pm

My take on this, is that according to this reporter, everyday is “Open Season” on “Old White Businessmen”, and therefore it should be legal to not only break into their Homes & Businesses, but to KILL OFF these Old Geezers!
I say it’s about time for every White Person to IMMEDIATELY ARMED THEMSELVES!!! AND DO SO LEGALLY, AND DEFEND OURSELVES FROM THESE PIECES OF HUMAN WASTE, WHO HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED INTO THINKING THAT WE CAN BE VICTIMIZED AT ANY TIME OF THEIR CHOOSING!!!
I SAY THAT IF I AM EVER ON A JURY TRYING TO PROSECUTE SOMEONE WHO WAS CLEARLY DEFENDING HIMSELF, NOT ONLY WOULD I FIND HIM “INNOCENT” BUT ASK FOR DAMAGES FROM THE CRIMINALS FAMILY!!! AND ANY RACE BASED ORGANIZATIONS THAT BACK UP SCUMBAGS LIKE THESE CRIMINALS!!! LIKE LA RASA AND THE ACLU!!!
IF WE KILL ENOUGH OF THEM, THEY WILL EVENTUALLY GET THE HINT AND SWIM THE RIVER TO GET BACK HOME!!!
I AM SICK OF THIS CRAP!!!

Justin   October 18th, 2007 - 3:11 pm

This is just sad. Ambushing an old man who defended his property. This is why local broadcast news is a joke.

Fivo   October 18th, 2007 - 3:13 pm

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of Law
Main Entry: kid·nap·ping
Variant: or kid·nap·ing
Function: noun
: an act or instance or the crime of seizing, confining, inveigling, abducting, or carrying away a person by force or fraud often with a demand for ransom or in furtherance of another crime

The police should be arresting this reporter.

Don   October 18th, 2007 - 3:13 pm

What kind of trash reporting is that? Who in their right mind wouldn’t have done the same thing as My Walton? What are we supposed to be able to read people’s intentions now? How can anybody know what those men would have done. If you have the balls to break into someone else’s property then there is no telling what you will justify. For all Mr Walton knows those men could have been out of their minds on drugs. Either way, to ambush an elderly man who has just gone through 2 terrifying experiences like that is despicable. Fire her!

Mike   October 18th, 2007 - 3:17 pm

Mary, you fool… this is not “Fox News” but a local affiliate in Dallas… full of Mexicans of course. So you manage to blame “white people” anyway… omg.

JohnMoose   October 18th, 2007 - 3:18 pm

This is what I have just left on the station’s Contact Us section:
Please FIRE Rebecca Aguilar. After watching her “reporting”, it appears she does not want to air news, only her own views. Is a personal ambush (and not letting him leave- unless she wanted him to slam her in the door for more “HATE reporting”?) her normal approach to an elderly man after he had to defend himself TWICE with a gun?
She should not be able to report on news anymore. Maybe she should only be in the Op-Ed section of the newspapers, so a person watching her at work is not blindsided by her own dark feelings of an issue! I do wonder what her actions would be, if she confronted a male burglar in her home. What weapon would she use to save herself? A knife? A baseball bat? An item from a shelf? Would she then be “Violence Happy”? Please, do everybody who wants TRUE REPORTING justice, and FIRE REBECCA AGUILAR!

George   October 18th, 2007 - 3:21 pm

I hope she never gets hired again. He should have shot her!

Denise   October 18th, 2007 - 3:22 pm

I wonder what Ms. Aguilar would have done if someone approached her mother or elderly grandfather with these kinds of questions. We would have never heard the ending of the cries of racism, elderly abuse, discrimination, you name it. But it’s ironic, isn’t it, that as a person of obviously Mexican descent, she is protected from being labeled a racist while discriminating and abusing an elderly white man.

Ms. Aguilar, you are a bigot and you know it, baby. It’s not your viewers who want to know, but you, and you aren’t worth the value of a speck of lint on this poor man’s jacket, so what makes you think you can harass a private citizen and get away with it?

Are there any lawyers here who would defend this man in a lawsuit against Rebecca Aguilar based on harassment and causing deliberate mental anguish? That might get this woman’s attention and make her think twice before she pulls this stunt again.

ROS   October 18th, 2007 - 3:27 pm

Another racist member of LA RAZA hell bent on
destroying a vet and all that vet stands for.

DONT CRY AMERCIA, YOU ASKED FOR IT!

GET-A-CLUE   October 18th, 2007 - 3:28 pm

Are you people mindless?
TV station management IS RESPONSIBLE for this. Forget race, gender and network, those have nothing to do with it. The producer, news directior & general manager (in that order) took this to air.
***REMEMBER***
In news, there’s no such thing as BAD publicity, just before sweeps.

Gino   October 18th, 2007 - 3:38 pm

I own a restaurant, and I also carry a .500 Magnum S&W on me all day long. I will not hesistate to blow a tunnel (and my sidearm does blow tunnels in its targets, it’s used to hunt grizzly bears) into some 3rd world hispanoinvader, or some violent ignorant animal from the ghetto, or some redneck piece of white trash meth head that comes to harm me, my employees – one of which is my wife – and/or rob my business. These pig liberals in the media have blatant biases, it’s amazing anyone even watches the news anymore. I’d like to see worthless wench fired, then deported. See if she’d ambush any of the dirty “Trigger Happy” cops down in the slums of Mexico.

JL   October 18th, 2007 - 3:39 pm

What a slimy POS. I hope she is canned, never to work again.

RickF   October 18th, 2007 - 3:40 pm

The man did the people of Texas and his neighborhood a favor. These scumbags were only caught and shot during this crime. How many more did they commit and got away with. He saved the tax payers many dollars and space in jail. He is a hero.

Greg Miller   October 18th, 2007 - 3:44 pm

Yep…he shudda shot her too…

Greg, Jacksonville   October 18th, 2007 - 3:47 pm

Does Rebecca Aguilar interview armed robbers or serial murderers at their cars to inquire about their level of trigger-happiness? (Be honest, it’s for science)
Trashing the innocent and making excuses for the obviously vile offenders is prevalent in the modern news business. One could call for her to leave but maybe it’s best to let this local network do poor work and lose in the market.

CLM   October 18th, 2007 - 3:48 pm

If it (home defense) happened more often there would be less of it (home invasion). There is no better home defense than the sound of a pump shotgun running a round into the chamber..if the bad guy stays around it is time to use it.

This is why “Castle” laws are so important.

eric   October 18th, 2007 - 3:49 pm

Some folks posting here need to take a deep breath. What does her nationality have to do with this story? Did she say anything about Mexicans? Did she lecture about the plight of the illegals? Is it possible today to be a non white reporter and cover a story without a racial flavor to it? Listen guys, I’m a lock and load redneck and she clearly did a horrible job of badgering the poor old guy, but what the hell does race have to do with it? This Mexican/illegal immigrant thing has certainly damaged some peoples sense of objectivity. I grapple with my racist deamons everyday, but some guys need to get a grip…and obviously her editors are equally at fault.

Robert Leavitt   October 18th, 2007 - 3:52 pm

I actually enjoyed seeing mugshots of the criminals after they were killed. I see so many mugshots of criminals after they have raped, plundered and killed innocent citizens. 25,000 murders in the U.S. last year. Do you hear any liberal media reports on that? The lawyers, judges and media reporters love to defend the “rights” of these criminals to feed on us. For those sheep reading this blog, get yourself a shotgun, take NRA classes on how to use it and join the war against criminals. You may have to meet these animals on common ground and you better have superior firepower to deal with them. God bless this guy for SURVIVING!

Tyrone   October 18th, 2007 - 3:57 pm

Welcome to the new Liberal Age ladies and gents more than half the coutry is indoctrinated to think like that reporter and sooner or later the democrats will have the votes to put people like that man who defended his property in jail.Democrats big goverment will be your new daddy.fear hillary shes coming soon.

crimesweepers   October 18th, 2007 - 3:57 pm

Hear, Hear, Robert !!

Better to “explain” to an air-head libtard reporter why you felt it necessary to kill to survive than have people stand over you in your casket saying how peaceful he looks.

Chook   October 18th, 2007 - 3:59 pm

Little Miss Aguliar might wish she had a shotgun when a slimy piece of human debries crawls over her fence and comes looking for something from her. She’d welcome a 70-year old hero to rescue her too . . .

stan   October 18th, 2007 - 4:02 pm

Gotta love it! I dont’ care about the reporter angle. I love the fact that he got to shoot some scumbags and luckily he’s in a state that says it’s OK.
Way to Go!!
…and he gets another shotgun–now that’s the type of news I like!!

Craig   October 18th, 2007 - 4:03 pm

This “lady” Ms. Aguilar (must be a miss cause I can’t imagine anyone married to this wicked, nasty, horrible person) NEEDS to be fired. A suspension is only sending the message that it is okay to do this sort of thing… we will just give you a bit of a vacation, see you in a week or so.

What in the world ever happened to news reporters being unbiased? We, and I mean all of us, have been too quiet with regard to so called reports inflicting thier own biases into stories.

Finally, why has this gentleman not been given an award or something from the mayor? In my book, he is a true hero. I only hope one day to be as brave as he was those two nights.

Tom   October 18th, 2007 - 4:03 pm

Good shooting! You saved the taxpayers 70K per year! And you won’t be sued by dead men. Your skills are needed at the border!

Bam   October 18th, 2007 - 4:03 pm

What amazes me is these reporters still don’t understand why the news media has long since replaced lawyers as the worlds most hated profession…and that’s saying something!

Alexsy Ginel   October 18th, 2007 - 4:04 pm

As a hispanic I defend Aggy and Fox … This trigger-happy old coot should be put in jail for life. He killed two young lads for nothing.

He probably voted for Bush, too!

Michael M   October 18th, 2007 - 4:06 pm

I earnestly hope this dear is never in a situation where she fears for her life from criminal action. I hope she doesn’t have the means to defend herself. Think of the tragedy if she were to chose to take some poor miscreant’s life instead of sacrificing herself or her family. I think the guy deserves our sympathy, not public ridicule and condemnation. Excellent example of modern journalism. I just can’t figure why the Editor who approved hasn’t already been nominated for a professional standards award.

Joe   October 18th, 2007 - 4:07 pm

This reporter would do much better overseas. Especially merry old England. The old folks over there have to make their homes fortresses because they have no second amendment rights. The junkies target them with repeated home invasions and often beat them for kicks. If those poor old people attempt to defend themselves with as much as a golf club they can be charged with a crime and sued in the courts by the home invaders. Upside down world may work over there….but not in my country.

Capt America   October 18th, 2007 - 4:08 pm

News channels that give their own opinions and call it reporting should loose their right to broad cast news. A couple of those and things would get back to “normal”

And we should make it a CAPITOL offense to be in the country illegally.

Kiel   October 18th, 2007 - 4:08 pm

I’m glad someone else has spoken up for the older citizens.
Does it mean that now once you get old you automatically become a victim.
NO!!!!
Heck, I’d buy this man another shotgun myself.
I truely believe in the right to self defense.
The reporter can go to hell and there is a special hell for those that are two faced liars such as she.

Jay   October 18th, 2007 - 4:08 pm

This contoversy against Miss Aguliar must be a Western states thing. Mr. Walton may well have been within his rights..I’ll let a D.A. or grand Jury decide that and honor their decision. But to go after Miss Aguliar’s scalp for asking serious questions on a serious matter concerning 2 deaths and also giving Mr. Walton an opportunity to comment is well within her job. I thought Mr. Walton held his own and Miss Aguliar did as well. Back off folks. She should be reinstated pronto.

M. Rich   October 18th, 2007 - 4:10 pm

Much unlike the overly intrusive and obnoxious reporter, the guy is actually doing society a service. If that American hero needs another shotgun, I will buy it for him.

Rosie   October 18th, 2007 - 4:11 pm

Smug self righteous liberal witch. Doesn’t think a 70 year old should protect himself from worthless young thugs who would rather steal what they need from a weak old man than work for it. How noble. She’s so brave, attacking that old white man like that while he’s out shopping. Defending thugs who victimize 70 year old men. Brave, brave Marxist hag.

tike   October 18th, 2007 - 4:12 pm

Everyone should contact fox now….tell them what you think.Perhaps we can make a difference.

Ron G   October 18th, 2007 - 4:14 pm

Hey Alexsy…Get the f*$k out. Love or hate Bush, one thing is for certain he has killed A LOT of Muslims – why can’t we do the same with illegals. I agree with Capt America – Make being illegal a capitol offense!!! And maybe companies will stop hiring mexicans for work they can’t handle – for God’s sake are there no crops that need pickin?

Brian   October 18th, 2007 - 4:22 pm

Obviously this is another Hispanic trying to make everyone believe that it is “illegal” to shoot to kill a person in the commission of a felony. She imphasizes the point that he had to believe his life was threatened. Why??????
and if the DA says that no crime was committed HOW can it be taken before a grand jury.

Isn’t Illegal Immigration a FELONY.

Brave Heart   October 18th, 2007 - 4:27 pm

This is not a race issue. Hispanics are not a race but a culture. Unfortunately the culture is one that cannot sustain liberty. Every hispanic country is corrupt and despotic. People of any race will suffer the loss of liberty if they subscribe to the typical latina, latino culture. This idiot leftist reporter is a typical latina who would love to disarm citizens so they can live like her relatives in the third world cess pools they were excreted from. Viva LaRaza!Viva slavery

Dan H   October 18th, 2007 - 4:28 pm

I saw no mention of discipline of her producers, assignment managers or news director. Did they get suspended also? Or is Rebecca being made a scapegoat to help the entire station save face? Maybe we are supposed to believe that she got her package shot, edited and run with out anyone green lighting it? How many newscasts did the story run in before it was pulled?

My guess is that Fox 4 has a more systemic issue not just one rouge reporter.

bubba jones   October 18th, 2007 - 4:29 pm

Good product placement for Academy Sports. Here in Orleans Parish, Academy stopped selling guns after Katrina, since the local untermenschen can’t be trusted not to loot after a hurricane.

Budious   October 18th, 2007 - 4:33 pm

The man was in his right to defend himself and property, what an ignorant reporter to judge his actions and accuse him of the circumstances that led to the shooting as being avoidable. She should never have a job in media, print or otherwise, again.

m judd   October 18th, 2007 - 4:33 pm

no, jay, it’s a texas thing. break into my business and i will shoot you. back to you

W Lion   October 18th, 2007 - 4:38 pm

Faux News at it again..

How dare the cops disarm the old guy of his only weapons? Take note all of you should have a few well stashed where they can’t be found because you could be next

More power to the old guy and congratulations on some fine shooting!

Name   October 18th, 2007 - 4:42 pm

If she were an American reporter she would have known that we have the right to protect ourselves in this country. She would have known that her stupid questions like “what is in the box” and “Do you feel bad about what happened” are none of her business.. she has no freedom of the press.. she is obviously not American!!! Kick her out.

Brian   October 18th, 2007 - 4:45 pm

W Lion got it right, raise H$ll with the police for unlawful siezure. If no crime was committed why did they sieze his weapons?

Deme   October 18th, 2007 - 4:47 pm

SHAME on her. Yellow journalism lives on in her tactics and questioning. She is not judge and jury, nor should she identify herself as a crusader. I am disgusted and agree with “budious” – she should be barred from doing this ever again.

Mary Beth   October 18th, 2007 - 4:54 pm

Send her taco *ss back over the border.

Robert Leavitt   October 18th, 2007 - 5:01 pm

Oh yeah, let a DA like Ronnie Earle or Nifong or some other Lib Insurgent DA and oh so Grand Jury that’s infested with lib jurors who have been filtered into their seats, decide his legal fate. Why does the Trial Lawyers Union, who pays more money than any other contributor, only support Lib canditates? Having a 12ga trump all of their money and “young lads” revolving door escapades is unacceptable. Watch.

UawGuy   October 18th, 2007 - 5:03 pm

Had she sat down and spoke out him without the camera rolling she may haver got a better story. First you ask the gentleman if he would like to tell his story. And Then you ask whatever questions you wish in a non judgmental tone. She seemed arrogant the second she asked him if he was trigger happy.

yo yo   October 18th, 2007 - 5:03 pm

You come on my property and try to steal stuff your gonna get smoked too!!!

This isn’t a Texas thing it’s an American thing. Obviously this reporter isn’t from America

Canadian 1   October 18th, 2007 - 5:05 pm

This is a huge problem in America. It seems that you folks always want to label people? Right away the comments are: “she’s an illegal alien, he’s a right wing NRA shotgun toting republican, if you think it was wrong or even unusual to shoot and kill 2 people in as many weeks you are a bleeding heart liberal, if you don’t support the Jena 6 you are a racist, if you’re a peaceful person and hate the war in Iraq you are unpatriotic? WTF!!! You guys need to stop with the constant labeling of your society. Your beautiful country is slowly going down the tubes and you’re too busy in-fighting to see it… The Canadian $$ hit par and now beyond and it’s not even an issue for the presidential race.. how screwed up is that? Or how about the murder rate in the US compared to other nations? I don’t hear Obama or Mitt talking about that… that’s messed up people… all you guys do is point out differences and problems. You need to start looking at what you have in common with your neighbour. It would be nice to see your country thrive again… now go ahead with the Canadian jokes, I probably deserve it after that rant.. but hey, I only say these things because I love the USA and I think its people deserve better…

Mike M.   October 18th, 2007 - 5:10 pm

That’s journalism?
Its sleaze at it’s worst.
Fire her. Better yet #$@*%!

John   October 18th, 2007 - 5:11 pm

She forgot that in Mexico if you rob a business they stamp a card and every 10 business you rob you get a weeks worth of free tacos.

The Lelland   October 18th, 2007 - 5:12 pm

Only 2? Oh well, there is plenty time to rack up more subhuman points. This brain dead wench should be dropped off in downtown Detroit in the middle of a “diversity parade” so she can show her moral superiority. I think it’s racist this interview was done in English, after all, Texas has been assimilated into Aztlan, right? Heil Rockwell!

David   October 18th, 2007 - 5:13 pm

What a screwed up system we have when cops seize a persons firearms even though they admitted the man ‘broke no laws’ (legal theft?) and then have the audacity to say, again,,, he broke no law but we are going to turn this “case” over to a grand jury.
What is wrong with these “people”. Our system of government is so screwed up and in the hands of so many morons its pathetic. Man I wish there was some unpopulated area or new world that I could move to, like the people which first founded this country did by leaving the tyranny of Europe, Because the tyranny and inbred lunacy has come here. Land of the free and the home of the brave? No its more like, the land of the deceived and the home of the enslaved. This country each day is having less and less of, anything, to make it endearing to anyone. If we are supposed to be the model of freedom for the world then God help the world because our model of freedom is false and hollow.

NotAChance   October 18th, 2007 - 5:15 pm

Hey MARK, STFU.

The Professor   October 18th, 2007 - 5:15 pm

The first requirement of being a TV journalist is self-righteousness. The second is having no human decency at all.

That makes most journalists sanctimonious–a word most of them couldn’t define (knowledge isn’t a prerequisite…looks are.)

katrina   October 18th, 2007 - 5:16 pm

“What are you trigger happy”??!! What kind of ridiculous crap is that? Thank God this woman was suspended. She should be fired!!! This man was defending himself. Maybe she will understand when someone breaks into her home. Go back to Mexico..

Tyler Rose Lady   October 18th, 2007 - 5:17 pm

It appears as though that woman was STALKING the poor old man. What if it was HER father who got robbed? Would she want some pesky reporter verbally bullying him around? Of course he was scared for his life, he had to use force that he never even had to use when he served in the US ARMY. If someone climbs an 8 foot wall to break in, they mean business. I do not think that this should go before any grand jury.

Glenn L   October 18th, 2007 - 5:18 pm

I’ll join the throngs of many who have already spoken on this site and say this woman should be fired not only suspended. Scum reporters like this should be locked up and the key thrown away. All too often I have seen this type of ruthless, insensitive and unprofessional behavior from so-called unbiased reporters. I worked in the business for 16 years before finally seeing the light and quitting. Nothing wrong with standing up for your principles.

NotAChance   October 18th, 2007 - 5:20 pm

Hey Alexsy Ginel, let us know when you want to meet on the battlefield. Until then, YOU STFU.

schizoidman   October 18th, 2007 - 5:20 pm

Spare me said at October 18th, 2007 – 1:29 pm

“This is a LOCAL fox affiliate, it has nothing to do with the FOXNEWS your moron liberals love to slander at any chance you get. Learn your facts, they will spare imbeciles like Mary (and just about every Mexican in America) from making more comments like that.”

Thank you. FInally someone can straighten out these knee jerk liberals from their Foxnews hate. Almost as rampant as BDS.

Jeff   October 18th, 2007 - 5:30 pm

Another example of a reporter trying to MAKE news and not REPORT news.

Lee   October 18th, 2007 - 5:40 pm

This old guy deserves a medal. His actions will hopefully make all the scumbags out there think twice about robbing people.

As for her, what a b*tch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheryl   October 18th, 2007 - 5:41 pm

The reporter was incredibly rude. What kind of example is that for our children? What possible news does she think she’s generating? I think it’s time for her to go. I would never watch that local news station if she represents it. Yuck.

Patriot   October 18th, 2007 - 5:46 pm

I am wondering what ALEXY GINEL would do if somebody was continually breaking into her house. (If she looks as retarded as she sounds, she doesn’t have to worry about being sexually assaulted.) But if not her life, what about her grandparents? Would she deny them the right to defend themselves?

It is ironic that this anti-American, Anti-rights reporter has made a career and a living off of the protections she is guaranteed through OUR constitution… A document that many, many men like the 70-year-old hero she tried to crucify, defended to the death with anything they could…including guns.

I just hope burglars picked up on the fact that hers is a home not defended.

Tony B   October 18th, 2007 - 5:47 pm

This local station has had a problem with their news department for a long time. Back in the mid-80’s (they were a CBS affiliate at the time) they broke a story about a string of rape/murders in Fort Worth.

Their prize reporter got a tip and turned it over to the police. He then staked out the “suspect’s home” and waited for the police to arrive. They name him, shove cameras in his face, ask his girlfriend about dating a killer.

The reporter acted like he was a big hero. This was the story that would make his career.

Or kill it.

Yes. The “suspect” was quickly cleared. He sued the station and the reporter.

I haven’t trusted anything coming out of that news department since then.

David   October 18th, 2007 - 5:47 pm

The old man was worried and tired of people ripping him off, and then to top that off the COPS rip him off to. That is the story this skank reporter should be following up on. Why did the cops take that old mans firearms? When, or are they to be returned? Why if no law was broken is the case being turned over to a grand jury?
Cops reasoning?
To punish him, even though he broke now law.
Well old man you protected yourself and your property legally but we are going to take your guns and harass you with the court system. (Because were cops and can do whatever we want) and so you can’t do that again unless you go out and spend your hard earned money to buy a new weapon. The only people who can defend themselves without penalty is us.

Frank   October 18th, 2007 - 5:51 pm

The real story she should be going after is why did the police take the man’s guns way leaving him defenseless after he needed to defend himself twice.

Home Defender   October 18th, 2007 - 5:55 pm

This reporter should be fired. If you break into my home, you can expect to get shot and quite possibly killed. She seems to prefer that the criminals kill the home owner and to attack law abiding citizens who defend themselves against criminal scum. Wonder if her opinion would change if someone broke into her home and threatened her.

Patriot   October 18th, 2007 - 6:04 pm

If any legal action is taken against this man, (through a grand jury, civilly by one of the dirt bags’ family, or otherwise) I will be more than happy to contribute to any legal defense funds…and I am pretty sure I am not the only one. In fact, I am tempted to send the guy a check to help cover the cost of his new shot gun. He is going through enough, and is the last person who should pay for these things.

Paula   October 18th, 2007 - 6:10 pm

This reminds me of the time a group of PETA nazis surrounded an 80+ year old man who dared to think he could get some venison during deer hunting season to supplement his family’s food supply. They were harassing him & when interviewed looked at him with disgust, saying, he “probably was too old to learn better.” This gentlemen probably fought the great war that gave these maggots rights in the first place. There may be endangered species that need our help, but none
are as endangered as our Senior citizens. We better start showing some respect here because none of us are getting any younger.
I’m really disappointed with FOX. They need to get rid of Geraldo, Greta & all the biased lib types & get back to objective news reporting.

OLD_MARINE   October 18th, 2007 - 6:17 pm

That female reporter went beyond and over stepped her bounds. What? Did she want to report his death?

TxnByBrth   October 18th, 2007 - 6:22 pm

This isn’t racially based stupidity…this is an example of liberal based stupidity. Walter was remorseful for having taken a human life, but he was compelled. No one can say, not even Rebecca, that had Walter not been armed the men wouldn’t have sized him up as an old man encapable of defending himself, and then killed him…thus allowing a more leisurely perusual of possible loot…

I bet there are several people out there, including me, who would volunteer to “baby-sit” his place;-)

Robert Winkler Burke   October 18th, 2007 - 6:23 pm

The biased reporter wielded her power by blocking the man’s car door and continuing the interview despite his cogent requests that she stop. She should be fired before her drive-by journalism makes more biased assaults on the public. Maybe she should get a job at a convenience store where she is at the same risk of robbery and drive-by-journalism as the victim she did her best to defame.

Ken Hartley   October 18th, 2007 - 6:24 pm

If this reporter knew anything about gun laws she would have known that ANY TIME someone is killed with a firearm – the firearm is taken away as evidence. Why is she basically saying he’s a bad person for shooting people that broke into his home? If they broke in to her home would she make them tea & cookies? Give me a break – she’s obviously trying to push her anti gun agenda and this guy has done nothing wrong. I feel bad for him – not only because he has to now live with the fact he shot and killed someone – but that when he did in self defense – he’s being put on national TV basically saying he’s trigger happy. This reporter shouldn’t be suspended – she should be TERMINATED.

The South was Right   October 18th, 2007 - 6:43 pm

A. Buy more guns.
B. Defend your property and person.

Folks….this is an old man trying to protect his home and himself. This reporter is going out of her way to insinuate that he enjoys killing people, and she is probably hoping he gets thrown in jail….despicable!

If this was my grandfather, or father…I am all behind him!!! I say the guy deserves a big HOORAH! for taking care of business….

I am totally certain all those crooks know what the law is. And if they want to step foot on someone elses property, they better have their last will and testament completed!!!!!!!

Poo on the reporter!!!

BillfromNJ   October 18th, 2007 - 6:47 pm

Yes, she was pursuing anti-2nd Amendment and anti-self defense bias.

Yes, she was promoting liberal biases.

Yes, she cruelly ambushed him and took advantage of a distressed senior citizen.

Yes, she and the TV station wanted to have his face shown so that he could be recognized in public, notwithstanding his objections and legitimate concerns for his continued safety.

Yes, she should be fired, not merely suspended.

BUT, I wonder if the intent of her cross-examination wasn’t more diabolical? The end of the news report is the key. She reports that his case is coming to a grand jury, which will decide if he committed a crime. Could it be that she was trying to trap him into making statements that would tend to incriminate him and prejudice his case in the grand jury procedings or prejudice possible grand jurors against him? This may be more than a case of typical liberal news bias and abusive liberal TV reporters. It may be a case of trying to interfere with the criminal justice system.

Arguably she was trying much to hard to get him to comment on his intent and state of mind for those questions to be simply have been raised for the sole purpose of making anti-2nd Amendment propaganda.

I wonder how lawyers counseled her before she ambushed him with those poined questions?

Perhaps it’s the Dallas DA that should be asking Fox some questions?

Welsh   October 18th, 2007 - 6:51 pm

The only way this could have turned better is if
the two robbers had been illegal.Fire the reporter.
Maybe she can get a job at Moveon.org

Sue   October 18th, 2007 - 7:02 pm

The lady invaded his space–actually putting her hand on his property which he was holding, stood above him looking down, asked questions that were downright hostile, and submitted video for public viewing of the face of a man who required that she not submit video of his face as a condition of the video because he was afraid. In a sane world, she would receive serious repercussions at work. I hope she does. That this story was aired in this fashion should bring serious repercussions for all involved in the editing and especially in the decision to air it. I can’t believe they would throw the face of a man who is afraid of retaliation on TV for all to see.

Roger Downey   October 18th, 2007 - 7:14 pm

I agree that the story wouldn’t have made air unless the editor, the producer and even the news director had viewed it and discussed it with the reporter.

Unfortunately, they must have determined that it was compelling video, and most importantly, they were the only ones who had an interview with the man, and that overrode their common sense.

In my estimation, the others responsible for putting the story on the air as edited should be disciplined as well, and station management should issue a public apology to the man interviewed.

In a way, I think the public was fortunate to hear the reporter’s questions with the answers because the man was calm and did not overreact to her questions which were baiting and designed to provoke an emotional response.

We as viewers have no one to blame but ourselves for this brand of TV reporting. The station’s ratings probably went up as a result of the story and subsequent suspension. That sends the wrong message to the staff who are paid to do what it takes to improve the audience share. In other words, the attitude was: shame on the reporter, but wasn’t that story great!!!

Scot   October 18th, 2007 - 7:16 pm

She buried the lead. The real story here is how a self employed, war veteran, in his golden years, is forced to defend himself from crime in his own backyard.

She was so wrong… This shouldn’t even be debated.. No one forced those idiots over his fence and into his home/business. He has no way to tell if their intentions are to kill him or his family and steal everything for crack!?!

Would you bet your child’s life when someone enters your home with criminal activities on their mind? I’d shoot first and ask why later. LONG LIVE THE CASTLE DOCTRINE!

Schratboy   October 18th, 2007 - 7:25 pm

Gotcha journalism got the better of this schmoe! Hahahahahaha

Brad   October 18th, 2007 - 7:32 pm

This is another example of the liberal left media portraying a US soidier (even a 70 yr old one) as a “trigger happy thug.” She should be fired, this man had a right to protect himself on his private property. Totally unacceptable under these circumstances. Who every wrote off and allowed this story to air should also be fired.

Frank   October 18th, 2007 - 7:33 pm

Reporter? What reporter?
This american hero should have shot that dumb b____! Then they should have sent a real reporter to do a real story on this man and his courage.

Thomas Newton   October 18th, 2007 - 7:35 pm

We need more real heroes like this old gentleman.

Ken Edwards   October 18th, 2007 - 7:49 pm

Too many of you have been calling him and “old guy” and referring to his age!! Like him, I am 70, a US Army veteran and can shoot a shotgun. That’s my beef about the comments. Forget his age, what if he had been 30? He is still within his rights to shoot the thieves and maybe this will keep others away.

Aceinthehole   October 18th, 2007 - 7:55 pm

I think what the reporter did was fantastic. She asked a real question, “Are you trigger happy?”

People are going to wonder about that, it’s a fair question to ask. He man said no, and the reporter moved on with her questioning. Especially if there is zero time to interview as the is in his car and could have left any time he wanted to, the reporter needed to get the point quickly.

I wish there was more journalism like this instead of a bunch of softball ninnies out there.

This isn’t destroying journalism!! Its making it better!!!!

All you sissies need to get over it!

To Liberal/Progressive reporters with a social agenda, burglary is just another form or “Redistribution of Wealth” and no thief should ever lose their life…esp. if the story has an ethnic angle. If the home-owner is killed by the intruder, the home-owner was “just in the wrong place at the wrong time.” If there were a just God and a real Hell, any reporter using that last phrase would go directly to perdition. (NO ! A home owner or business owner is IN The RIGHT place at the RIGHT time…It is their business or home.) I live on the edge of a city with a Liberal government. The death rate from shootings led the nation (deaths per 100,000 people) and has been high in that category a lot. The police are only as aggressive as the elected officials and the elected officials are more interested in bike path expansion. Though my suburb’s police seem to be very good and aggressive, I am 50 yards from the city. Each time there is a mindless murder, I tend to buy another gun…. I sense that from that side of the street, I have to assume that I am on my own. “Better to be judged by twelve men than to be carried out by six” contains a lot of wisdom. I just hope that I can act when the moment comes… and that a tool of self defense is there to protect my wife, myself and my home.

Dilla   October 18th, 2007 - 8:25 pm

I could nearly break down and cry at the miserable statement this says about our country today.

A picture of a foreign reporter disrespecting a WWII Vet that saved multiple US generations and is now aging into his twilight years seeking to live in peace.

At this very moment, WWII Vets are dieing by the hundreds every day. Many of their friends didn’t make it through that war, but many others have lived a lifetime with the scars and pain both physically and mentally.

I would jump on a hand grenade to save this man’s life and thank him for the life he gave me free of Nazi oppression.

It is utterly disrespectful to the the memory of our forefathers to accept this.

It is utter shame that some people on this comment board would even try to defend this woman.

Please realize the extreme contempt that those who understand the sacrifice of these solders and the terrible conditions that they faced in the war. If you had a clue, you would cry as well.

This woman deserves no less than to be fired, I wouldn’t mind a public flogging myself.

God Bless the WWII VETS!

Nevada Smith   October 18th, 2007 - 8:34 pm

Excuse me, but the old gentleman is the victim here. First by the two felons, now organic debris, and then by this pseudo journalist.
She should not be excused for injecting her bias in this story because she is a woman and a minority. She should be fired to save future victims from the same insensitive and intolerant behavior. (And then the old gentleman could hire her to clean his house!)

Tom   October 18th, 2007 - 8:38 pm

Dilla, you said it all – “A picture of a foreign reporter disrespecting a WWII Vet that saved multiple US generations and is now aging into his twilight years seeking to live in peace.”
It’s sickening, and it’s getting worse by the day. It’s all liberal CRAP, and we will LOSE this country if this keeps up. I hope Michael Savage hears about this story.

Geoff Metcalf   October 18th, 2007 - 8:46 pm

This reporter clearly injected her prejudice/agenda into the story. The victim was OBVIOUSLY in fear of his life in both shootings. Thankfully it happened in Texas and not California.

The report was reprehensible. Not only should she be fired, but her editors and supervisors as well.

‘Gotcha’ journalism may be cool for politicians and celbrities, but to go after THIS man is sad and contemptible.

Jim in the OC   October 18th, 2007 - 8:55 pm

Capt America   October 18th, 2007 - 8:56 pm

Political correctness and people being afraid to be PRO-WHITE are killing this country. As we just have to sit here and take it or be called racist.

I am beginning to believe that it was racism that made this country great and that it is our heritage and inheritance. Sad but true.

Maybe being racist is not a bad thing – but the only thing. It was whites that freed the slaves, died in WWII stopping the “white master race” and are letting millions of people walk freely across our border (In war time at that) – And for that we have lost the right to complain when the freedoms we want so bad to share, are taken away one by one and rubbed in our face by “people of color (pick one)”

This shows the end of an era – the era of my Grandfather. Proud Flag Flying Iwo Jima Marine that would had never believed the world their children created.

There are hard choices coming – hard conversations and white people are not going to stand together for fear of being called racist. Then it will be Columbia and Rwanda – Just like LA and Philly are now – What kind of America are our children going to inherit? And why are we not screaming?

Dilla   October 18th, 2007 - 9:01 pm

Tom, I bet half the people on this board wouldn’t have been born if the Germans had won the war.

That is the level of contempt I feel for these defenders.

Their parents might have been sent to a gas chamber.

YOU HEAR THAT WOMAN! Ya wouldn’t have had a chance to disrespect the guy, because you never would have been BORN!

Ken   October 18th, 2007 - 9:13 pm

I think your video disection/explanation was very useful and fair. Please continue this type of control, it is refreshing to hear two inteligent people objectively help explain a story. The old man is obviously shaken and remorseful to have had to take the action he did, that said it is good she taped him as he bought a new gun. The second dead scum bag may have thought the cops took his only weapon from the first shooting and thought this old pariot would make and easy target for the picking. The next punks will now know he is still armed and they can asume they wil receive the same treatment. A truely compelling story in favor of gun ownership, I will definetly pay my dues to the NRA again and forever.

Joe   October 18th, 2007 - 9:36 pm

America’s new favorite sport is righteous indignation. Everyone’s playing… politicians, reporters, news anchors, talk show hosts, religious groups, ethnic groups, EVERY group.

Here’s how its played…

First, find someone who has said or done something out of the norm. Next you will need to vilify the person in a public forum while you position yourself as the defender of normalcy. You will gain prestige with the group for whom you are claiming victimhood. You get extra points for the use of hyperbole and a raised voice in an effort to make yourself seem genuinely offended by the behavior in question.

You see this every day, all they time, no matter where you go. 60 Minutes, America’s Most Wanted, Dateline NBC, church sanctuaries, Jerry Springer, the floor of Congress or wherever people and microphones gather.

This reporter was trying to play the game too but overplayed her hand and found herself on the other end of the righteous indignation stick and now we all come here to bash her.

So now we all pretend to be mortally offended for a few minutes and call for her to be fired, then go about our day probably forgetting all about this story in half an hour.

I speculated earlier that the point of this encounter was for the reporter to get the man to influence the grand jury proceedings, either by provoking an incriminating statement or by poisoning the pool of grand jurors against him.

Liberals believe that the end justifies the means and behave accordingly. They are tyrants for the most part and will stop at nothing to advance their agenda. This reporter is no different.

As to the notion that he could have just drove off. Absurd. He could not have done that without injuring her. She had him trapped against his will and she detained him. Basic tort law. I think it may be actionable and I hope that some Texas lawyer will sue her and the station into bankruptcy.

In the meantime. Want to do something constructive? Texans, boycott the sponsors of the station’s news program and let them know it. Then, if you are not already, become a member of the NRA. Exercise your Second Amendment rights. Have you introduced a friend recently to the shooting sports lately? If not, do so.

Every time one of these liberal tyrants goes for a grab at your guns, the best response is to encourage more law abiding citizens to responsibly exercise their Second Amendment rights. The Democrats and other liberals are engaged in a program of gradual complete civilian disarmament and the best defense against it is by a free people comes from the exercise of their civil rights. Liberals hate free people exercising individual rights against their socialist collective, but that is fight thrust upon us.

I live in the free and independent socialist republic of New Jersey. Our governor and our legislature are aggressively seeking to gut our Second Amendment rights, while giving our brand of illegal aliens (mostly of the Jihadi persuasion) a staging ground for their next attacks.

In NJ, if you defend yourself with a firearm, you get prosecuted, not the criminal. Sort of like the way it is in England.

My hat off to BreitBart TV. Context to story is a great way for someone to understand the various issues to story. Goodbye broadcast TV. As more and more Americans get high speed access to video, your business model will become more and more powerful. I wonder what the broadcast media is thinking when they become the focus of the story instead of presenting the story? A little flower is blossoming in the information age.

Robert Leavitt   October 18th, 2007 - 9:58 pm

“I love the smell of burning lib reporters in the morning…”
Even the above breitbart.tv reporters are having trouble getting a handle on this. They just can’t get how so many people look upon them in disgust. A clue comes at the end of the above video when they talk about posters wanting to send this man to work on the border. Watch their implicit body language and voice tone. Priceless.

Allison   October 18th, 2007 - 10:01 pm

It’s a shame when “objective” news reporters go out of their way to create controversy out of something a private citizen was within his rights to do. People like this reporter won’t stop until we’re all defenseless, gutless slaves to PC ideology. It’s past time for “regular folks” to raise a hue and cry and quit putting up with this crap. Make no objection at your own peril–and one of these days it’ll be a right that’s near and dear to you that goes under the microscope as being targeted for eradication.

JohnV   October 18th, 2007 - 10:12 pm

It just does not occur to this reporter or others like her that this old man was the victim in the incident. She probably thinks of the dead guys as victims. Would she ambush a rape victim as she was buying a new front door lock and ask “What’s in the box? Do you feel bad that the rapist didn’t enjoy the experience as much as he had hoped? Do you mind if we tell other rapists where you will be tonight?”

BillfromNJ   October 18th, 2007 - 10:14 pm

What a messed up society we live in. Here is a man defending his property against the scum, and thank goodness Darwin is thinning out the criminal element. The question I have is, in the report, it is stated that the police said that he broke no laws, yet there is going to be a grand jury investigation to see if he broke the law. How screwed up is that? Give the guy a Medal, some free shells, and let him live in peace.

BillfromNJ   October 18th, 2007 - 10:35 pm

Rest assured, in NJ, you can’t own one of those, unless you work for Governor Corzine, of course.

@Ken Edwards-I hear you. I have a few people in my family that are your age and they are far from being frail and ‘old’. One of them used to be a self-defense instructor that taught police and public not too long ago and he is still as strong as a bull. He doesn’t really need a weapon. So, I know what you mean.

BillfromNJ   October 18th, 2007 - 10:47 pm

Joe,

I will not be forgetting about this story in an half hour. I am already compiling my list of fellow law abiding citizens to bring along to the range with me and who have never been shooting before. This sort of liberal attack on our civil rights just motivates me to make more friends of the Second Amendment.

John Gleason   October 18th, 2007 - 10:54 pm

The 70 year old is a murderer. He admitted as such and he should be sent to prison. I don’t care what the “authorities” say, and I won’t be surprised if a grand jury lets him off due to sympathy for his age. But at a minimum he should have his guns taken away from him because he is a menace to society.

NOTHING gave him the right to kill either of these trespassers. Nothing gave him the right to use deadly force. This did NOT occur inside his “residence.” It happened outside his residence and he was protecting his property. The law is very clear that one cannot use deadly force to protect property. That is why people carry insurance, that is, so they do not have to resort to a vicious murder like this in order to keep personal property from being stolen.

I wonder how the anti-reporter nuts would feel if a storekeeper saw a child shoplifting and shot and killed her to protect their property? Or the child’s mother? This story makes me sick and disgusted because right wingnuts have converged on the side of this 70 year old murderer.

This is not a comment about the reporter since she was clearly out of line. But the fact remains she realized the man was a criminal and she confonted him. She should have left that up to the grand jury.

Robert Leavitt   October 18th, 2007 - 11:07 pm

Higher Level?Really?

Bear75056   October 18th, 2007 - 11:12 pm

John G….. you don’t know crap about Texas law. For example:

Texas Legislature Votes NRA-Backed “Castle Doctrine” into Law

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

The Texas State Legislature today gave final approval to the National Rifle Association (NRA)-backed “Castle Doctrine” bill (SB 378), bringing common sense self-defense protections to law-abiding Texas citizens.

Texas is the first state to pass “Castle Doctrine” legislation this year, making it the sixteenth state to recognize the importance of victim’s rights.

“I want to thank the Texas Legislature for working together to pass this vital legislation and take further steps in protecting the people of this great state,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA’s chief lobbyist. “Law-abiding citizens now have the choice to defend themselves and their families in the face of attack knowing their decision will not be second-guessed by the State of Texas.”

SB 378, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Wentworth (TX-25) with 27 co-authors and the House version of the bill, sponsored by Rep. Joe Driver (TX-113) with 106 co-authors, states that if a criminal breaks into your occupied home, your vehicle or your place of business, the victim may use any manner of force against that person and does not have a “duty to retreat”. The bill also provides protection for persons using force authorized by law from liability for injuring their criminal attackers.

BillfromNJ   October 18th, 2007 - 11:14 pm

John Gleason,

Big talk. Lot’s of slander. He is a “murderer” really? Judge, jury and, what, executioner are you too? Like most liberals, you have the amazing, yes, even clairvoyent, ability to ascertain what burglars intruding someone’s abode have in mind or how they will react if caught as they commit their crimes.

Thanks for reminding me what Liberals like you have in mind for the rest of us.

I will, I promise you, just based on the stunning ignorance of your comments alone, find five more new members for the NRA this year.

I am comforted, in a Darwinian sort of way, to think that you do not arm yourself or believe in defending yourself or your property. Please do us all the favor of advertising that fact at every possible opportunity. For starters, get one of those “I’m Unarmed, Please Don’t Hurt Me” T-shirts.

Allison   October 18th, 2007 - 11:22 pm

For John Gleason who doesn’t care what the authorities say…the Texas Statutes Penal Code Ch 9. (Justification Excluding Criminal Responsibility) doesn’t have any limiting words like “residence”:

§ 9.41. PROTECTION OF ONE’S OWN PROPERTY. (a) A person in lawful possession of land or tangible, movable property is justified in using force against another when and to the degree the
actor reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to prevent or terminate the other’s trespass on the land or unlawful interference with the property.
§ 9.42. DEADLY FORCE TO PROTECT PROPERTY. A person is justified in using deadly force against another to protect land or tangible, movable property:
(1) if he would be justified in using force against the other under Section 9.41; and
(2) when and to the degree he reasonably believes the deadly force is immediately necessary:
(A) to prevent the other’s imminent commission of arson, burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, theft during the nighttime, or criminal mischief during the nighttime; or
(B) to prevent the other who is fleeing
immediately after committing burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, or theft during the nighttime from escaping with the property; and
(3) he reasonably believes that:
(A) the land or property cannot be protected or recovered by any other means; or
(B) the use of force other than deadly force to protect or recover the land or property would expose the actor or another to a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury.

Je   October 18th, 2007 - 11:27 pm

Oh jeez, that was horrible. Hire yourself a producer or something. At least get your sound balanced out.

John Gleason   October 18th, 2007 - 11:38 pm

OK guys who think you know the Castle Doctrine. You don’t. You make it sound as if a person can blast away at anyone who steals PROPERTY or trespasses to steal property and that’s not what the law says. I suggest you read it before you pretend to be defense lawyers. I’m a prosecuting attorney and the Castle Doctrine was written mainly to prevent criminals from SUING people who shoot them.

Even under the Castle Doctrine a person is NOT justified in resorting to deadly force UNLESS he is in reasonable fear for his life or safety.

This guy ambushed two trespassers who were intent on stealing property. Did he call the cops? No, he just took two lives and then called the police! And let’s set the record straight. These two human beings committed SECOND degree burglary. That is a relatively minor offense.

The 70 year old killer had every opportunity to avoid killing these two men. He was never personally confronted by either man. To the contrary, he ambused THEM and shot them dead in cold blood. He’s an animal and I cannot believe people are defending him. Yes, if he had been personally confronted or if either of the men had entered his living quarters he would have had strong justification to blast away. But that’s not what happened and even under the obnoxious “kill ‘em dead” laws of Texas, this guy is still a murderer.

mikesum32   October 18th, 2007 - 11:49 pm

Burglary isn’t a crime worthy of the death penalty. I don’t take in to consideration the fact that he’s a little old man. Next time he should load his shotgun with beanbags or rock salt. What about warning shots ? Better yet, he should get a surveillance camera to record his property, and call 911.

TX must have a statute similar to that in RI.

RI is a funny state. It’s a bitch to get a carry permit, but we can blow away an intruder on our property with no repercussions.

And property is a funny thing. A car is your property too. If I were ever in a similar situation the reporter would have been shown the business end of a shotgun and told to leave else she’d be shot on camera.

As for Mr. John Gleason… may God have mercy on your idiotic soul.

Wow! It has all been said. Nothing to add. She is a completely disreputable representative of a profession that is already at the bottom of the public esteem list, except, of course for congress.

Let her find work that suits her lack of judgement.

Bear75056   October 19th, 2007 - 12:08 am

John G……. yer so full of it.

Texas Castle Doctrine Law “states that if a criminal breaks into your occupied home, your vehicle or your place of business, the victim may use any manner of force against that person and does not have a ‘duty to retreat’.”

I emphasise “your occupied home, your vehicle or your place of business” and “victim may use any manner of force against that person and does not have a ‘duty to retreat’”

What part of that do you not understand, you so-called prosecutor???

stoney11771   October 19th, 2007 - 12:17 am

I want to thank y’all for showing this video however you had to do it. I’ve searched all over the internet and this is the only place I could find it. Also sad as it may be the Dallas Observer was the only newspaper here in the DFW metroplex that had the story on their website. Our “credible newspapers did not even have a story about it.

BillfromNJ

Perhaps your ignorance is meant to insult “me” as I am Russian military immigrant to New Jersey… I am happy that that I am allowed to own all my old military weapons here too… But I am so saddened that I may still “need them”…

BillfromNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 12:29 am

Dear “whatthefu..”

I’m laughing, laughing hard. In fact, I “prey [sic] to my maker” that I don’t have a stroke laughing. Heck, what you gonna do, unload your F22 Raptor on me over the sky of socialist New Jersey? I suppose you’d do it on orders of President Hillary Clinton. Why not? The Army, in violation of Federal Law, helped advise the Clintons and Janet Reno on how best to kill women and children at Waco, so I guess it’s fair to say that it isn’t beyond the range of possibility. And from all appearances, you seem like just the man to do it, especially since you hold “stupid state laws” in such low esteem.

I don’t believe you are USAF. I don’t believe you fly the F-22 prototype or otherwise. Every serviceman I have had the opportunity to speak with has never comported themselves as you have in your disgraceful post. I don’t believe you are US military. More likely, you are probably on the staff of some Democrat congresscritter and just can’t handle any form of criticism — that’s the Liberal way. I do though believe that you are “really tired”, so why not go to bed and be rested for your next drive of the F-22. Hate to think of all my tax dollars tied up in the hands of some one really tired jockeying that bird around.

stoney11771   October 19th, 2007 - 12:35 am

Wow! Are all prosecuting attorneys so jaded? I thought the law was innocent til proven guilty. Not its lets fried the guy????????
I hope to never meet Gleason in court he seems quite biased. Don’t you dismiss jury members for that?

(A) to prevent the other’s imminent commission of arson, burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, theft during the nighttime, or criminal mischief during the nighttime; or
As I remember the story it WAS NIGHTTIME. If you’ll look up, it states that in the Texas Penal Code.
If more thieves would realize that we have a right to defend ourselves and our property and we will, maybe they’d quit trying to take what’s not theirs.

tom   October 19th, 2007 - 12:38 am

Rancher next over from me shot a 16 year old kid breaking in to his house at night. Kid’s parents apologized to the person that had to shoot the kid. “John Gleason” best not move to Texas. If you don’t go in other people’s houses without permission people don’t shoot you. Can’t get much simpler than that.

Dilla   October 19th, 2007 - 12:39 am

John Gleason, a telephone call the police is no protection from immediate harm.

You are the murderer, for all the people you disarm and leave with only a telephone so someone on the other end can record that last living breath.

If you had ever been in a life and death situation, you would know that things are happening at light speed. You have to be prepared to kill, escape, or be killed.

In many situations, the safest course of action is to attack, especially when you can’t know who your attacker is.

Showing your backside makes for a nice target in most cases.

Rampdog   October 19th, 2007 - 12:41 am

My jaw dropped on that “trigger happy” question!

I like these two Breitbart TV people here. Good objective commentary. Every TV journalist should watch this video to see both the right way and the wrong way to report on a story.

BillfromNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 12:47 am

Dear MVK,

I probably wasn’t intending to insult you, unless you were, in fact, the person filmed loading that magazine into that Kalishnikov semiautomatic shotgun that Mary was so wild about. I’ve seen folks with speedloaders fill a pumpaction twelve guage more quickly. But, don’t be insulted. Consider it to be a constructive suggestion to practice more. That’s all.

As to you ownership of firearms in NJ. Please be careful. I saw enough on that videoclip to be concerned that if you have one of them, the NJ authorities might object. Just start with the combination of the pistol grip, folding stock and flash supressor.

If you have a Russian AK-47, good for you. Just make sure that it has been permanently altered to fire only in semi-automatic mode and check the size of your magazine. Hate to learn that you were hauled off to the pokey for having one too large. Remember, ownership of a oversized magazine, even if you don’t have a rifle to put it in, is a felony in our splendid NJ socialist republic.

mike   October 19th, 2007 - 12:47 am

As a journalist myself, I can say she probably went a bit too far, but come on Breitbart, your coverage was just as biased against her. quote ‘This is why I hate people in this field.’ I know your not a TV journalist, your a vblog and maybe entitled to your bias, but lets look at the situation. She was probably told by her news director to grill him. I would bet that shes bias and unfair not as a result of ‘liberal bias’ against gun ownership, I think likely she was just stupid. Thats the dirty secret in journalism today. There is little bias in the news, simply because our ‘journalist’ are incredibly stupid. In any market, reporters today come to the job not out of love of fourth of state, intellect, and old-school objective values in journalism, but rather most just wanna be on TV and can’t be actors.

Its true. Almost all reporters today have the brains of a physc student in college. You know that person who always raises their hand and wastes class time by throwing out the dumbest hypothesis, just to make themselves look smart. There are no Edward R Murrows left, all thats left is IQ 75 bombshells who want people to think their bright. Don’t expect too much out of media today, least of all the intelligence to be biased.

Breitbart and other conservative new-age media groups constantly try and prove the liberal bias, but its simply not there. What is there is a media landscape dominated by 1. stupid people, and 2. stupid people who think they see liberal bias.

I wish we had a good group of journalists, we might not be in Iraq today (maybe we would have asked more critical questions in the lead up to war) I wish we had a more diverse group of journalists and media outlets, but most of all, MOST OF ALL, I wish we had a country of intellectual thinkers, those who are unafraid to read and ingest media from views opposite of their own, and look critically and unbiased at the situation and make a conclusion (keep in mind, yes I am a liberal, no I am not a democrat..or republican…or green. I am unaffiliated, I hate all parties equally but I did come to this site from reading drudge report, a conservative leaning site that I read daily, just to take in views in contrast to my own.)

And before you lambaste me, I am a man who believes in 2d amendment, I shoot guns occasionally, I am a pretty good marksman. I just like the 4th ammendment more, but the corporate landscape today makes ‘freedom of press’ impossible.

Larry   October 19th, 2007 - 12:50 am

I think this is awful reporting and she needs to be responsible for what she does BUT

Did the News Director clear the story for broadcast … was she assigned this story by an assignment editor? producers etc etc…

This is a big Market you don’t just go out put a story together without it being approved.

Other people should pay a price.. or they are scapegoating this hack reporter.

BillfromNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 1:00 am

Final comment for the evening. I believe that “John Gleason” is a prosecutor about as much as I belive that “whathefu..” is a USAF pilot.

If I were to speculate, I would guess they are both graduate assistants at the University of Texas, Austin, and are indentured to some tenured PhD that offers courses in “Peace Studies”. Just sayin’.

Robert Leavitt   October 19th, 2007 - 1:01 am

Mike, you have confirmed that you are a “journalist” in the way you dissed the breitbart.tv commentator. She was reading posts from a blog and not making the comment herself. You are, indeed, a journalist.

Dilla   October 19th, 2007 - 1:06 am

BillfromNJ, they are the same person.

Rampdog   October 19th, 2007 - 1:10 am

Mike,

There have been studies that looked at the political viewpoints of the people who run our nation’s media organizations. They were overwhelmingly liberal.

If, as you state, these people are not so bright how can you expect them to disregard their natural disposition to view the world through liberal glasses? Of course it is promoted through their work. The success of news organizations like Fox and Breitbart back up my view. There are a whole lot of people in the US that agree with me.

BillfromNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 1:18 am

Dilla,

My bad. OK, so it’s only one graduate assistant from the University of Texas, Austin indentured to a tenured PhD offering courses in Peace Studies.

Out. :-)

MVK, don’t take my comments personally. If you are really a fellow 2nd Amendment traveler in New Jersey, then we have more in common than we are likely to ever have in differences. I don’t know for sure what Russian arms you shoot, but my advice that you should understand the thicket of NJ firearms laws is sincere. For what it’s worth, my next acquistion is going to be a Moisin Nagant.

SorryforNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 1:40 am

Hey BillfromNJ I’m from NJ too but I like living here. If I had as many problems with the state as you did I’d just move; just a suggestion. It’s a liberal state you need to learn to live with it and adapt. Isn’t NJ part of the United States, by the transitive properties of ignorance it means you are busy insulting America. As for this Texas guy, I mean come-on of course he wanted to kill these guys he was pissed off because he was robbed several times. All the previous times he was robbed he wasn’t injured. Maybe try telling the guys to get the F off of his property or firing a warning shot. Also it’s a salvage yard the thieves won’t risk their lives or murdering someone for an old wrench. Honestly though I’d probably do the same thing and shoot them because I’d feel violated and I’d be pissed off not because I’d fear for my life; just like this guy. Finally as a safety note all you trick or treaters STAY AWAY FROM HIS HOUSE or else you’ll be walking away with a sack full of 12 gauge.

Maurice   October 19th, 2007 - 2:06 am

John Gleason is a prosecutor? Right. And I’m the Pope – no, really, I am. Yeesh.

Try this one on for size Johnny Boy, the law you’re spoutin’ on about doesn’t say what you think it says, and hasn’t since 1995. It was in 1995 that the Texas State Legislature created an exception to the existing 1973 statute that governed the use of deadly force in self defense, removing the requirement that a person retreat in the face of a criminal attack. To put it more simply, because I know you don’t get it yet, there has been an existing “Stand your ground” Castle Doctrine on the books in Texas for the last 12 years.

Now this year, taking effect September 1st in fact, the existing law was modified again under SB 378. The new law allows the reasonable use of deadly force when an intruder unlawfully enters or attempts to enter their home, vehicle or workplace; commits or attempting to commit such violent crimes such as murder or rape; unlawfully trying to enter a protected place; or unlawfully trying to remove a person from a protected place. It should be noted that the law also grants the shooter civil immunity for a lawful use of deadly force in those circumstances.

He runs a salvage and welding business, not a scrap yard, and there is an 8 foot fence around it – that makes it a protected space (STRIKE ONE FOR JOHN). He LIVES on the premises, that’s right Johnny, wrap your legal beagle brain around that one – he LIVES there (STRIKE TWO FOR JOHN). So it’s not just his business, it’s also his residence. In addition to that little factoid, he’s called the police 42 times to respond to people burglarizing or attempting to burglarize his premises. Burglary is a felony, and that means he had a reasonable fear for himself and his property as the criminals entered his RESIDENCE unlawfully (STRIKE THREE FOR JOHN). The police, who in all honestly have been absolutely useless otherwise, have stated publicly that the old man DID NOT break any law as far as they could ascertain.

Now I’m sure that in whatever blue state fairyland you live in Johnny Boy, gun control and midnight basketball have made the streets safe for the widows and orphans, but in the real world bad guys just don’t give a rat’s ass if they’re breaking the law. This guy isn’t a murderer you brainless jackass, he’s just some poor senior citizen and small business man who’s stuck doing the job the police can’t do, and DA’s office is either too lazy or (given the drivel you’ve spouted so far) to incompetent to do. In my book that makes him a hero. You may disagree, but then no one gives a fig what you think. So why not go play pretend lawyer somewhere else? M’kay?

Maurice   October 19th, 2007 - 2:24 am

Sorry,

I’m sorry, but it’s obvious you have no firearms training or experience. He should he fire a warning shot? Where do bullets go if they don’t hit their target? Hint – if it goes up, it comes down. So he should fire a warning shot into the air and let a dozen pieces of 00 buckshot (which aren’t small BTW) fall at random outside his property and risk injuring someone? That’s a great idea. Are you going to pay for his liability insurance?

Oh, and I love the comment, “All the previous times he was robbed he wasn’t injured”. Like that means something. You know what, you try and break into my garage (detached from my house) and I go out to great you with a 12 gauge, I’m not asking you to nicely leave, and I’m not going to ask if you intend to hurt me and my family. If you see me coming and you don’t run, I’ll shoot your sorry ass dead. How do I know what your intentions are? Hell, you’re already committing a felony, so you obviously aren’t afraid of the cops. Why should I think you don’t intend to harm me? What’s your advice to the victims of sexual assault, “Honey as long as he isn’t beating you, just lay back and try to enjoy it?” I will never understand that mindset. Jeebus.

On a side note, I think I feel so charged about this because I know what the old man is going through. My uncle ran a salvage and welding business for 18 years in downtown St Louis, Missouri. They were a specialty company that salvaged and repaired compressors, hydraulic components, generators, and electrical motors. They had a lot of “junk” some of it worth tens of thousands of dollars. In the 18 years he worked downtown they were burglarized successfully 28 times, and at least as many times people attempted to break in but stopped for some reason. My uncle got two nice big rottweilers to guard the shop, and you know what the creeps did? They poisoned them, then stole about $20,000 worth of tools and equipment. You know what my uncle did. He got my grandfather’s service revolver, and spent two weeks living in the shop, waiting for the thieves to try again. When they did he shot and killed one of them, wounded the other two. That’s when the burglaries stopped. This man did what had to be done, what the cops couldn’t do, and what society (and the DA’s office) refused to do. He handled the problem.

garymc   October 19th, 2007 - 2:39 am

I have to agree she should be disciplined somehow, as should higher-ups who knew how she treated the subject of her piece. I also agree that it appeared she was trying to get prosecutable evidence. Funny, if she had evidence of a crime the default setting would be to claim first amendment privilege.

But what I am wanting to see investigated by some journalist is how, exactly, did she come to meet up with him on the parking lot of a store where he bought the replacement gun? What an incredible coincidence! (incredible as in not believable) Did a news crew sit on his home/business for hours or days hoping for some stroke of luck like a gun store parking lot? Did someone at the store call in a tip during the hour’s worth of paperwork?

tom   October 19th, 2007 - 3:01 am

Last weekend there was a home invasion burglary at night in El Paso and the homeowner was stabbed to death when he went to see what was up because he was unarmed and they were.

Mr. Walton was well within his rights. He had made 42 calls to 911 in the recent past on business and home invaders and the cops did nothing because cops are janitors not protectors. They show up after the scum are gone.

IF YOU DO NOT WALK UP ON SOMEBODY’S PROPERTY JUMPING THEIR FENCE) TO STEAL THINGS IN THE WEE HOURS THE PROPERTY OWNERS DON’T GO TO YOUR HOUSE TO SHOOT YOU.

How come the idiots posting here don’t get that?

Do not rob people or attempt there of, nor assault people, nor burglarize and nobody shoots you.

As to warning shots:
Two in the body.
One in the head.
Just make sure the perp is dead.

If the first shot kills him, the other shots aren’t going to hurt him any worse. If the first shot doesn’t kill him, the second or third does.

Bruce   October 19th, 2007 - 3:04 am

I think everyone who sees this story should send the gentleman a personalized shot gun shell, that says, ‘Now, THIS is Fair and Balanced!’

^^X^^

WA Sheepdog   October 19th, 2007 - 3:05 am

Maurice, you’re right. The sheeple don’t – and won’t – get it, and the ambulance chasers and career-ambitious “law”yers don’t care. Unless and until you’ve experienced something like this, you have the luxury of entertaining the philosophical mindset. It’s always easy to be dogmatic and declare what one would do and what others ought to do to better emulate their tolerant ways when it’s theoretical.

People like this veteran and the millions of lawful firearms owners across the nation don’t shoot to kill. They shoot to live. And it’s people like that reporter – and many of the commentators above – that keep the absurd notion that criminals deserve the same treatment as honest citizens and that hard-working individuals tired of the system failing them deserve the same treatment as criminals.

It is this reluctance to get serious about getting tough on criminals – a la Project Exile – that results in a system that fails men like this man – a veteran, a business owner, a senior – being excoriated by a sanctimonious bubble-dwelling sheep.

brent   October 19th, 2007 - 3:06 am

This reporter was trying to make this elderly man out to be some crazy gun carrying conservative. We only saw one victim of this man but I bet the first intruder was an illegal Mexican and since the reporter is Mexican also she was trying to defend the thief. This kind of reporting should not be tolerated. The police said the man did nothing wrong so why is the media making him out to be the problem. I am proud of this elderly guy for protecting himself and his belongings. The tax payers dont have to keep these low lifes up for years while they sit in jail since this elderly man put them in the ground. One thing I dont understand about this story is why did the police take this elderly mans gun not once but twice. Is it a common practice for the police to seize the homeowners weapon since it was used to protect himself. I think this mans neighbors should buy him another shotgun and some shells simply because this man stopped crime from happening in the neighborhood. If I was the old guy I would sue the Television station that showed this elderly mans face. The reporter may have put this mans life in danger.

SorryforNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 3:19 am

Maurice,
As for the warning shot, he was firing the gun already, when he shot the guy did the buckshot injure a bunch of innocent people, most likely it was late and the intruder was the only one around, I doubt he was doing in during the day with people all over the place. And you yourself said If I see you and you don’t run I’ll shot you. I don’t know the whole story, did this guy even give these people the chance to run, or did he just see him on his property and shoot, did they have weapons and charge at him? And as I can’t speak for everyone’s motives, logically if I was stealing and someone came at me with a gun I’d run, if I intended to harm him I’d go right after him with a gun and not bother stealing anything yet. They are different mindsets it’s like saying how do I know that rabbit won’t act like a bear and try to maul me. I don’t really understand your analogy about the sexual assault though. I say that to all the ladies I assault and once they stop crying they don’t complain. Now out here in Jersey a lot of the businesses have an alarm system so you don’t have to worry about the cops taking your shotguns and cleaning peoples blood off your tools. But the bottom line is that the cops didn’t do their jobs, he could have secured his property better, he could have warned them,or the bottom bottom line is that the intruders shouldn’t have been there in the first place because when you become a criminal thats the cost of doing business.

brent   October 19th, 2007 - 3:24 am

I think this old guy did the right thing. If someone comes into your home you should be able to kill them on the spot. I also think the US is our home and our government should allow us to kill any Mexican illegal who decides they want to break into America illegally. Why dont Americans offered the same right to kill mexicans when they come across the border illegally since this is our home.

John Doe   October 19th, 2007 - 3:26 am

You guys are idiots. You trash the reporter for showing his face after he states he’s afraid that people will identify him. And what do you do, you show the damn video with his face. How stupid is that. Come on, put a little effort into blurring out his face or something.

tom   October 19th, 2007 - 3:30 am

SorryLogicFromNJ

Texas STATUE LAW says AFTER DARK AND UNDER MANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCE TRESPASSERS ARE BASICALLY FAIR GAME. Anybody who lives in Texas knows this. So then we are back to “if you don’t jump somebody’s fence in the wee hours with criminal intent it’s not like the property owner is going to break into your home to kill you.” He could have been armed. He could have been unarmed. It doesn’t matter. He knew the rules AND HE BROKE THEM AT HIS PERIL.

Do you get it yet?

Don’t step in front of a train if you don’t want it to run you down.

SorryforNJ   October 19th, 2007 - 3:45 am

If you read my whole comment I do say that when you become a criminal thats the cost of doing business. Did the intruders actually go into his house or were they just on the property? Armed and unarmed should matter unless your intent in the first place it to shoot the intruder.
And again I say to the trick or treaters WATCH OUT, I can pop a couple cause they’re trying to take my candy, right?

tom   October 19th, 2007 - 5:41 am

SorryNJ:

Intruders had been in his house inside an 8 foot fence as well as in his welding shop multiple times. Enough for there have been 42 calls to the police (with no useful result for Mr. Walton) logged outside of these 2 incidents.

If you are an intruder under these circumstances you are assumed to be armed. Armed or unarmed in the final reckoning is irrelevant. You are assumed a threat if you jump somebody’s fence to break in.

A motivated person can close 25 feet on you with a knife in less time than it would take most to draw a pistol. A motivated person with a gun could draw and shoot you in much less than that. All intruders should expect to be shot. Are you comprehending this yet?

As to trick or treaters, that’s a stupid red herring. Halloween and kids are walking up to your door or across your lawn you aren’t going to shoot them. One might also think that an 8 foot fence and locked gate would preclude trick or treaters from approaching the door, at that. Nobody was “accidentally” on Mr. Walton’s property.

If you shoot kids that knock on your door for candy on Halloween you will go to Huntsville and get a needle in your arm. You can’t shoot Jehovah’s Witnesses or travelling salesmen for knocking on your door during normal hours either. Shame about that on the Witness thing but I guess they have enough crosses to bear already.

You starting to get it yet?

This is pretty simple stuff.

the arrogance of this reporter is really what strikes me most, her condescending and phony superiorority are stunning. and, so be honest, i suspect that she really really thinks he was the most dangerous kind of person in our society, look at all things ‘wrong’ with him ( from an affirmative action hired ‘reporters’ point of view:

1. he is white
2. not only is he white, he is not mexican
3. he is elderly
4. he clearly understands the second amendment
5. he just robbed trial lawyers of 2 scums to defend and bill the state of Texas

here’s hoping the idiot ‘twofer’ reporter gets canned ( again, obviously an affirmative action hire, ooh a female AND an hispanic/mexican/latino/whatever )

While I fully support gun ownership and ones right to protect their property etc , this gentlemen being placed in a situation where he needed to kill people TWICE in a short time does raise some eyebrows. Amazing coincidence or should it be researched more?

Maurice   October 19th, 2007 - 10:18 am

SorryforNJ,

Here’s the problem, we aren’t communicating because you just don’t get it. You have an obvious anti-gun bias that equates anyone willing to use one with a homicidal nutjob. Example, you ask if the perps broke into his house or just got into the yard, well here’s the thing – it you watched Aguilar’s piece closely you’ll see that they broke into a building – there’s evidence of a door forced open and police have crime scene tape around the area – so I’m thinking yes, they broke into his residence. But that DOESN’T MATTER. He has an 8-foot fence surrounding his property – that’s a secured area. Right there, by law, he’s in the clear to shoot to kill. Get it? And given that he’s been victimized 42 times in the past, he’s got no real reason to accept to continue to be victimized just because you’re uncomfortable with the fact he’s defended himself. Armed and Unarmed can matter to you, but guess what? If your ass breaks into my home, my business, any secured area of mine and I’m coming at you with a shotgun you’ve got two choices – run or die. No evidence these suckers ran, and now they’re dead. Nothing wrong with that IMO, you’ve got a problem with it then here’s my suggestion – next time someone breaks into your home or business – go down and confront them with a flashlight, ask if they plan on killing you, raping your wife and/or kids, or just robbing you blind. Hey, if they don’t want to kill/rape your family, just go back to bed, right? Let me know how that works out for you.

Maurice   October 19th, 2007 - 10:32 am

Dennis, I get you and Sorry’s reluctance to believe that anyone could be this unlucky – don’t think the police aren’t thinking the same thing that’s why they’re referring these cases to a GJ, but even they have said for the record that the shootings look clean.

According to an article I just found the first perp broke into his residence by forcing a window, the second one I’m not sure about how he got into the business (I think he forced a door) but he was shot inside the shop itself:

“Police say Walton killed the suspected burglar with a shotgun blast inside Able Walton Machine & Welding on Sunday. Walton lives above the shop and was alerted to the intrusion by a motion sensor system.”

Ask the person who reads for you to read these blogs to you again….this man was assaulted 42 times….42…that’s a big number, more than four times the number of fingers on you hand. The fact that he shot on two of them, could mean that there are still 40 scumbags still out there. That’s what we adults call “MATH”….42 – 2 = 40.

EVERYBODY JUST SHUT UP A MINUTE AND ENGAGE BRAINS

I’m a strong supporter of the second ammendment. I am a member of the NRA and I applaud Mr. Walton for defending his life and property. Anyone who doesn’t is either a fool or wants to weaken this country further.

I also realize the “drive by” major media are not on the side of Constitutional Democracy. They clearly have an anti-American socialist agenda.

That said, all those who are screaming for the reporter’s blood need to watch the video again. She didn’t ACCUSE Mr. Walton of being trigger happy! She asked him a QUESTION! “Are you a trigger happy kind of person?”
He answered “No” to her question and she said, “That’s what I want the viewers to know.”
She was NOT CONFRONTATIONAL!
She asked him for his point of view.
He had obviously consented to the interview as long as his face wasn’t shown. Look at the change in camera angle.
She wasn’t jamming the door open. She was standing there fiddling with her umbrella.
She then offered him the opportunity to confirm that he was afraid of losing his life.
If you pay attention you will see…
SHE MADE HIM LOOK GOOD!!!
She does NOT deserve to be suspended.
She did a good job of covering an important story about a man defending himself.
Get off her back!!

also I TOTALLY AGREE with the earlier post re: the Breitbart reporter in this piece, she is a delicious hottie, and i want to see her cover more stories….i am going to log onto breitbart more often to see her stories, that is for sure WOW

Wow, my comment is regarding the two Breitbart commentators on this piece, talk about no value added. Do you two really think you are helpful? Do you have such low respect for your audience that you had to repeat what was obvious from the video. And incredibly, you failed to discuss the basic issue of journalistic impartiality until the reader’s comments bought it up for you! Shameless apologists. Get a job you can perform well cause this isn’t it.

Josh   October 19th, 2007 - 8:58 pm

I’m a gun owner and a veteran and though I think we get a bad rap in the media for the majority of the time, this isn’t the worst case of a dim portrayal that I’ve seen and I don’t think her questions are completely out of line. I don’t know if “trigger happy” was a great choice of words but what people have to understand is that reporters have to be provocative in order to get a story worth putting on television, they need some kind of emotional response, whether it be questioning a man about shooting two men in the past three weeks or talking to a couple of kids about their lemonade stand, you’re going to adjust the types of questions you ask according to the tone of the subject matter. Another consideration to make is that reporters are going to want to ask questions that they think the viewer might want to ask, they aren’t doing it for their own entertainment and though sometimes you’ll hear them steering things to fit their own views they need to have the audience relate in order to get anyone to pay attention and to serve the purpose of reporting in the first place. Now if she had asked something like “did you enjoy watching the life fade from these men’s faces?” I’d definitely be very agitated about the interview and would demand that she resign or be fired.

SorryforNJ   October 20th, 2007 - 1:49 am

Maurice, thanks for the info. I don’t have an anti-gun bias. In my first post I said I would’ve done the same thing as him. What I was saying is that I would shoot him not because I was fearing for my safety but because I was fed up that I was broken into 42 times and I was allowed to. Just because I say it could’ve been handled a different way doesn’t mean I’m anti-gun or anti-veteran of pro-criminal, it means it could’ve been handled a better way. Also I was picturing it as his shop and house were separate that they weren’t in his house which apparently they were. The surprising thing is has a security system, where in the world are those cops? But for that breaking in and raping comments well thats a couple times you’ve brought up raping which isn’t part of this story I think you’re a bit fixated on that, do you have a hot daughter, which window is hers? Don’t take offense I’m just messing with you. But anyway you can’t ask someone if they are going to kill you because if they were they would have done it already. There is a difference between property crime and violent crime you can’t say both are the same thing. There are 10 million property crimes by that logic there are 10 million murderers running the street. There were 16,000 murders. Thats 1 murder for every 625 property crimes, he was still good to be robbed 583 times before being killed.

Joy Journalisr   October 20th, 2007 - 1:56 am

Call me crazy, but am I the only one who believes there was NOTHING WRONG with the questions she asked… or the way she asked them?

“Are you a trigger happy kind of person? Is that what what you wanted to do? Shoot to kill?”

The point of asking a question is to find out an answer. As a viewer, I would want to know if he now considers himself a trigger happy person… I would want to know if he intended to shoot to kill. They are both legitimate questions. If anything, I thought she sounded a bit sympathetic when she asked those questions. As a journalist who has been in those situations where you do have to approach someone who likely doesn’t want to talk to you on camera… it’s not exactly like a scripted sit down interview where you’ve sat there jotting down or formulating your questions. She was on the fly dealing with a man who is a little unpedictable himself. He could have said, “No I’m not trigger happy, just protecting myself… hell yeah… I shot to kill, I was in danger” Then people might have thought this was a great bit of questioning that illicited a great answer. Clearly this man has the ability to stand up for himself, after all, he just killed two people. I’m a believer in letting people have guns for protection. In fact,I don’t blame the guy for shooting the hoodlums breaking into his business. He probably did the right thing. I just think as journalists we cannot b afraid to ask the tough questions in search of answers. I think it was great to hear from the guy.
I did think it was a very wierd they showed his face, then when he asked them not to… they stopped showing his face. Well, the cat was already out of the bag. They probably either should have made the decsion to blur his face for the whole story and expained their reasons why… or continue to show his face regardless of how he felt. It was sort chicken shit to go half way on that. BUT the questions she asked? Again I say there was NOTHING WRONG with them.

SorryforNJ   October 20th, 2007 - 2:11 am

Tom,
You mention red herring, now I wasn’t really serious about shooting trick or treaters but lets break it down. The 8 ft fence, if there was not a fence would it not be trespassing? They should be assumed armed, why should that be assumed. Look at the numbers of violent crimes compared to property crimes, why don’t you assume too that his name is Smith? Now instinctually I can see assuming worst case scenario because that is human nature. A motivated person, I’m just wondering where it says that intruder was motivated to kill him, that is a straw man argument. And Back to those damn trick or treaters I hope some of them have bullseye costumes. Well with the fence we already determined that you can trespass without a fence. So they are on my property without my consent. They accost me at the door with nefarious disguises to hide they’re identity so I won’t recognize them in a police lineup. They then demand some of my property or I should fear the consequences. Why should I not shoot these criminals? They’re already just feet from me and theres one with a knife and I think I see a couple guns.
So Tommyboy the ball is in your court, please come up with some good provable logical counterpoints to this argument.

Dan Kauffman   October 20th, 2007 - 8:01 am

She keeps repeating they broke into his business which is true, but she never mentions it was also his home, which in many eyes would make a difference.

Jim Williams   October 20th, 2007 - 9:45 am

I can only pray that the next burgler that tries to rob this 70 year old man takes that dumber than a box of rocks reporter with them!!!

John   October 20th, 2007 - 11:18 am

This reporter should not be suspended, she should be summarily fired, the editor that allowed this piece to be aired should be fired.

This guy did nothing but defend his life and property, and what does this man get for it? Ambushed in a parking lot by an overzealous self absorbed bimboette.

How dare this person even suggest that defending ones life and property makes one trigger happy. This reporter, and her bosses that sent her out to ambush this guy and then let it air should all be out of work.. not suspended… FIRED.

If this is what passes for a hispanic broadcast journalist of the year, then its quite clear that affirmative action is at work.. and probably why she hasn’t been fired as well.

The director that sent her out to ambush this guy should be fired, the editor that allowed this story to be aired should be fired, and the reporter should be FIRED. Why are you even ambushing this guy in the first place? He exercised his God given right to defend his life and property. There was absolutely no need for any of this, other than an attempt to grab some ratings by a beligerant, self absorbed and biased “journalist”.

A man who’s had to defend his life and property with deadly force LEGALLY twice in a few weeks tells them he doesn’t want his face on camera, broadcasts it anyway.. on top of ambushing the guy in the first place, and then suggesting hes trigger happy for doing what he did, is indefensible.

Suspension is a joke.. this news department needs purged.

Carlos   October 20th, 2007 - 11:33 am

Rebecca crossed the line on this Interview. I thought she was a good reporter, but she displayed no sensitivity to this Victim of numerous crimes.

Her lack of empathy, kindness, and objectivity for this elderly Crime Victim reveal much about her prejudices. I agree with the commentor who asked, “Is this how Rebecca would want her Grandfather Interviewed?”

This issue is not about race or color, it is about Good People vs. Bad People!!

ray   October 20th, 2007 - 12:06 pm

“Thats 1 murder for every 625 property crimes, he was still good to be robbed 583 times before being killed.”

“now I wasn’t really serious about shooting trick or treaters but lets break it down.”

Same mindset.

That’s the problem with people who think in black and white (and they say conservatives don’t know “nuance”).

It makes no difference how many times you’re robbed “per murder” if your murder is the first of the “583″ times. Think that’s an insignificant number? Load ONE of ONE HUNDRED six-shot revolvers with ONE BULLET. Mix them up. Take a handgun out at random and pull the trigger. Do it again 41 times. I’d say “See the point?”, but I doubt it will penetrate.

The error was in a previous poster describing the “trick or treat” argument as a “red herring”. It wasn’t…it was a different form of argument called “straw man”.

It’s an asinine analogy. Take the same “trick or treat” costume on February 3rd…and maybe the outcome will be different, no?

Ridiculous arguments. Ridiculous people.

Obviously you wen out f your way to be unbiased, good work.

laurel   October 20th, 2007 - 2:25 pm

Very interesting situation. I am a reporter in Phoenix, Arizona. I can tell you that not every single script gets checked before airing. That is very bad, especially in a world where you have not one but two and sometimes three deadlines in one day. It has become a situation in the local media where executive producers and news directors demand that you get on the air as quickly as possible. And as someone who works in a newsroom I can honestly tell you that YES all too often it is the news directors and producers who push the reporters to get the story no matter what, ESPECIALLY too beat the competition. It really has become an unfortunate situation. In this particular case, I see several things that as a reporter I would not have done. And before I continue, I make it clear that I have no problem with ambush interviews, it is part of the job. However, this man said he didn’t want his face shown and we saw him right off the top of the story. Can’t do that, plain and simple. Had they blurred his face I think that would have been fine. Second, asking him if he’s trigger happy–bad. In an ambush situation the best approach is to stick to the is there anything you want to say sir? Were you scared for your life? etc. etc type of questions. “Are you trigger happy” makes it seem like it’s personal, like she’s the one who has a problem against him. It is a bad situation all around…I do think it’s very bad that she’s the only one in trouble. The producers and news director should be suspended as well…it is their job to watch what goes on. We as reporters cannot be perfect every single time especially with so many deadlines and pressure. Also, keep in mind that in this day and age you have very, very young producers running the shows. They are clueless sometimes. The News director should be ashamed of herself for not stepping up and admitting it wasn’t just the reporter who screwed up.

Bill   October 20th, 2007 - 9:55 pm

Suspension is appropriate for her. Under the Castle Doctrine and the free travel laws citizens of Texas are allowed to defend themselves and their homes with lethal force. Everyone in Dallas knows about this gentleman killing criminals that broke into this home/ business and no one I have spoken with faults him for doing so. It is interesting that LULAC has demanded her reinstatement but I find no comment from Channel 4 or that organization on the news story.

Elena   October 20th, 2007 - 10:56 pm

This reporter should have known better, but I guarantee that her producers/executive editors were encouraging this type of behavior. As a reporter myself, at my station, I know the morning meetings are all about “lets get them”, and “crucify” to make a good story. But I, who am much younger than this reporter, WON’T do it, UNLESS the person is a convicted criminal. My station wants you to ambush victims, get “family SOTS”, even if someone just died. At some point, you need to stand your own ground as a reporter, and just say “NO”.

Elena   October 20th, 2007 - 11:06 pm

I should add that I’m a TV reporter in a suburb of New York City.

Anonymous   October 21st, 2007 - 5:19 pm

So why’d you show his face. Are you any better than the original reporter for doing so?

Michele   October 22nd, 2007 - 12:40 pm

WOW! I am shocked to see how many of you have lost sight of the real issue of her journalism work and turn it into racism. Shame on you to even mention her heritage. For the record- I know her and she is a PROUD AMERICAN and shame on you for making those horrible illegal remarks.
The issue is about her poor judgment in how she reported the story and not about race. Also the person who thinks her newsroom editors and bosses are all white- shame on you for also bringing in race…
Rebecca should not have shown the man’s face since he requested not to be seen (2) she should not have been holding him up by being by holding him up (3)she should not have asked him the “trigger happy question” but that is a FOX way of doing a story not just hers (4)the story could have been done better as many of you state if it was humanized by having him tell the story

John Helsley   October 23rd, 2007 - 10:04 am

Thank you Breitbart. That was an excellent critique of the story. Thanks for catching me up on the details so that I can form an opinion.

MIKE   October 24th, 2007 - 12:51 pm

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEAS PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THIS WOMAN.
Yes, she is a recent national award winner, but that does NOT mean she has no history of ambush. This is a woman who had to nearly SUE the station to get a new contract- a woman who was on probation already for her questionable reporting tactics and inability to tell two sides of a story, a woman who has been known to scoop reporters in her OWN newsroom by calling their sources and telling them they have been fired (when in fact they are still employed) and that she is taking over from there. Apparently there is little to no background research done by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists otherwise they would have found a woman with a career that has spawned hate, lies and complete DISRESPECT from much of the Hispanic community she is said to be a representative of.

Micah   October 24th, 2007 - 5:38 pm

Not only should FOX fire her, but throw that illegal piece of a reporter over the fence to Juarez!
Who does she think she is, harrassing a true American Patriot! the nerve of these illegals, not only do they think they have rights here, but to come over and harrass our Veterans that is unacceptable. And they wonder why real Americans don’t like mexicans…

Herbert   October 25th, 2007 - 9:11 am

So Brietbart thinks they’re doing a service by providing the video that the original station has decided to pull? Cute.

The reporter was no more objective than any other journalist out there. Crap like this will continue to jade the general public to the point where nothing will be taken at face value. Oh, wait, we’re already there.

I wonder when the cops will give back this gentleman’s shotguns. Having to go out and buy another so he can protect himself is a basic violation of his rights. If he did nothing wrong, give his property back.

Kellie   October 25th, 2007 - 1:23 pm

Last time I checked it was still a constitutional right to bear arms and protect life and property. Ms. Aguilar should have taken note of that when she crossed the river and set up a life here. It shouldn’t even be news worthy. Any one of us could find ourselves in the same situtation, defending our family and home. Then we have to defend ourselves from the media?!!!

Upset   October 25th, 2007 - 6:26 pm

In response to everyone wondering why the cops took his guns if he didn’t commit a crime, it’s standard procedure.

He did not commit a crime, but a crime was committed (burglary). In the course of that crime, the suspect was shot and killed. So, when the police were called to investigate, they have to seize the weapon used as evidence. Once the grand jury deliberates (as stated, this guy won’t get charged, but it’s a formality), he will have to put in a claim to retrieve his property.

For arguments sake, if he owned 20 firearms, the other 19 would have stayed at home with him after the police left.

We’re not under martial law, his constitutional rights were not violated, etc. The cops were just doing their job.

Jesse Jackson needs not tell the public that its not a black thing!

Ms. Aguilar was not interviewing Mr. Walton nor reporting on his situation. She was SCOLDING the poor man. She must be removed. Every biased reporter worldwide must be removed until the remaining reporters begin to get the message that the public will not tolerate biased news reporting.

Journalist   December 7th, 2007 - 6:36 am

Ladies and Gentlemen,

What you are missing is that the reporter is not the person you should be upset with.

You need to understand that this type of behavior is promoted within the TV News industry. Management will never come right out and say it, but the people who get the promotions and all the good assignments proceed in this very confrontational manner. Any TV reporter who doesn’t want to worry about job security has this in the back of their mind when they pursue a situation like this.

It is extremely tough to go into a situation like this and I’m sure that it wasn’t entirely the reporter’s idea. She showed a lot of courage and poise as far as I’m concerned. Trying to confront a man with a gun because your boss told you to is no easy task and I guarantee none of you would be able even utter a sentence let alone try and gather some information about what really happened in these incidents.

Everybody needs to calm down and realize that you have a vote. Turn off your TV and make a donation to NPR. The only reason that this reporter did this is because a TV news industry that requires 18% profit demanded it.

Thank you.

If she had asked the same questions differently, she would have avoided this controversy. Example:

“some people call you ‘trigger happy’ and say that possibly you wanted to ’shoot to kill’.” How do you answer criticism like that”?
