Full-Length Speech: Obama Addresses Race in America, Reverend Wright

"As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions – the good and the bad – of the community that he has served diligently for so many years."

To the above poster – you weren’t planning voting for Sen. Obama no matter what and that’s okay. I will vote for unity, whether Sen. Obama gets the nomination or not. I will write-in his name. My hatred of Hillary Clinbton just increased 10-fold. I have nothing against John McCain but I can’t vote for someone who thinks it’s okay for us to kill young American men and women and Iraqi civilians, including children.

Gregory Scott   March 18th, 2008 - 4:59 pm

Anyway, what I’ve seen so far of this speech is as good and as moving as I expected it would be, though it is far from what would be required to convince me to trust him. But I admit I’m biased against him because he attended a church that preaches Liberation Theology for 20 years, and that makes him— if he agrees with anything Mr. Wright ever said— a bit of a pinko communist rat (please excuse my caustic description). Pinko rats have good sides, too, but their political ideals are not Democratic. You can’t have Democratic Marxism, can you?

So here we have a man who I’d love to believe because he is the model speaker and he seems genuine, but his views are rather dangerous to freedom and democracy, and I don’t think he is aware of it. Therefore I cannot trust him. Plus, he has been so undeniably dodgy about this whole relationship with Mr. Wright, and I firmly think he’s been lying his ass off about it since the incendiary videos hit the mainstream. At the very least he’s been skittish and indirect while he got this speech together to explain it all in a way he had all control over.

Do any of you reasonable people know what I mean? My problems are not with the ‘racist’ views of the Reverend Wright, as that’s nothing too surprising considering the history of this country that stretches to this very day. My problem is with this so-called “Social Gospel” which is a bad theology and a real threat to the freedom of US citizens. So often what looks like a beautiful lake to quench the hot sun turns out to be just more sand. With Liberation Theology, the sand is poisonous, to boot.

Henderson   March 18th, 2008 - 5:11 pm

I’m surprised it took people this long to realize that Obama is nothing more than empty speeches. IF he became president everything the did would get lost in the middle of race talk. Why have all the controversial world leaders endorsed Obama? The leaders of narcotics groups, Hugo Chavez, president of Iran… and others have endorsed him. The reason why they like him is because they know Obama is naive and can be manipulated like a yoyo. He can’t even handle the media, do you think he’ll be able to handle the manipulative world leaders, absolutely not. The only thing Obama has going for him is that he’s an inspirationally speaker.

[...] Obama knocks the race issue on the head Catch the speech here. [...]

Dan L.   March 18th, 2008 - 5:54 pm

thank you Sen. Obama for addressing practically NOTHING regarding your affiliation with a racist, bigoted, hateful spiritual adviser.

I cannot believe how many people are taken in by all of this empty rhetoric. Here is a summary:

I love this man and have a long, deep rooted relationship with him. For some reason, I was too ignorant to notice, over the course of 20 years, how racist and hateful he is. However, even if I did notice, I am telling you now that I disagree, but I never disagreed enough to confront him or even speak up about the fact that such thinking is utterly wrong and counterproductive. Besides, some of his points – although I insist that I never heard them nor agreed with them – are at least partially valid. How can one deny the fact that white people, or at least their ancestors, are the cause of each and every ill of the black community by virtue of the very fact that they are white?

Blah, blah, blah… Change. Blah, blah, blah… REAL change. Blah, blah, blah… no seriously, in case you haven’t heard me before REAL,REAL Change!

Please don’t ask me any more difficult questions, and for the love of god, please don’t make me explain anything about my ideas or proposals.

Thank you, and make sure that you feed your children more than just relish sandwiches.

American Barrett   March 18th, 2008 - 6:13 pm

“A bit of a pinko communist rat”… What are you talking about? Who are you, Joe McCarthy? That description of Sen. Obama cannot be simply excused as caustic, it is unexcuseable! It goes against everything the man just finished saying. I also believe you are confusing Marxism with Totalitarianism, and Democracy with Capitalism (but that is beside the point and frankly I don’t understand how Marxism was even brought up). Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure you have a good side too just like you say those “Pinko Rats” have. So why don’t you really open up your ears and listen to what Sen. Obama is trying to say? That is what anyone who is truely reasonable would do. My problem, Gregory, is that there are too many people in this country that are so concerned with labels. There are too many people that are willing to conform instead of standing up for what they really believe in. There are too many people that base their beliefs on the invalidities of their cherished labels. My problem is with people that choose to fuel the negative over the positive. So often, what looks like a well-informed group of people that attack others without any compelling evidence turns out to be an ignorant group of people, whose wild imaginations embellish their desire to seek and destroy anyone that might challenge their ignorance. That is the poison that divides our society. When someone comes along that has no history of flip-flopping, no scandels with prostitutes, no hands in the cookie jar, delivers a message of hope instead of fear mongering, values integrity, and honestly yearns for a united nation based on the principles of democracy and peace, then I will gladly say, “Yes we can” alongside him. Some say they cannot trust Barack Obama, I believe I can. I have never felt that way about any politician, and I am not saying that everyone else should feel the same. However, isn’t it within reason to give someone a chance before you make up your mind. Honestly.

Jeanie, what about someone who thinks its okay to kill defenseless infants, or consider ones who survived abortion to not actually be alive? That’s okay? I know— you think that’s just fine, it’s an American woman’s right!

Gregory,
Why don’t you trust him? Which views are dangerous to freedom and democracy and how did you come to such conclusions?
Also what do you mean by “or consider ones who survived abortion to not actually be alive?” who said that and how do you survive an abortion, does that happen?

Re Henderson March 18th, 2008 – 5:11 pm who says “He can’t even handle the media, do you think he’ll be able to handle the manipulative world leaders, absolutely not.”

LOL … poor Henderson, maybe he voted twice for the great world-leader-handler Bush ? … you know, the guy who really worked up the world to benefit USA … somebody tell me that reasonable people are more numerous in this country than Henderson types …

American Barrett says <<>>

Why should anyone vote for such a guy when we can vote for that tax-return-hiding Hillary, who also voted for war because she was afraid of the consequences of saying NO, and who used that shameful commercial in Ohio because she knew people there are kind of “sensitive” to such abject manipulation. (sensitive used instead of much harsher but better-match-for-the-situation words)

Or we could vote for Papa Mccain, who no longer buys green bananas (:-) and tells us that he can walk freely through a market in Baghdad when in fact his behind was covered by 100 special forces and 3 Black Hawks! One note: Republicans finally got their best candidate, too bad it is 8 years too late and the USA is already down the tube, thanks to the Incompetent-In-Chief.

Gregory Scott   March 19th, 2008 - 6:48 am

Well, I had a very intensive response to American Barrett & Brenden half-written when the power went out… So I will have to rephrase into a very condensed format, if I actually can do that, since what I wanted to talk about was very complicated to explain…

I appreciate the good responses Barrett, as that is the only reason why I post. Sadly, this response is going to be seriously truncated almost to worthlessness because of this damn power outage.

I agree with Barrett’s views in many ways, but I am concerned that Obama is not the answer to these things at all, though I am sure he would like to be. The problem lies in the Liberation Theology that Mr. Wright taught, and that is the bulk of what kept Obama in attendance and shaped his views (though I believe his views previously fell into similar veins of thought before he met Rev. Wright). The issue to me is that the core beliefs of this “theology” are quite dangerous to a free society. The ideas behind it initially sound very just and convincing, but if you look further you can see it more clearly. I do not have time to get into it. I encourage you to read arguments both in favor and opposed to “Liberation Theology”. It had its roots in South America, initiated by Catholic priests, in fact— though it never represented Catholicism in any way, and it has been disavowed by the Church. It is a social justice movement, but the methods that it employs result in socialism, and socialism is an expensive and precarious path to take. Every system has pros and cons, of course, but Capitalism in a free society is a preferred system as it allows the individual to choose what they do of their own interests, for their own interests, if they choose, and should they choose to do the right, noble thing and aid others, it is of their choice and therefor stems from virtue. By contrast, socialism removes this freedom of choice to do as you will— be greedy or kind. The problems with capitalism in a free society stem from the problems of human nature, but it is not only problems and ills— there is so much good that has come from our system, mainly in the true freedom it provides to all, despite your situation (I know this will be argued based on the fact that some are more privileged, which I would argue but I’m running out of time today). Am I being clear? Socialism, as far as I’ve seen, removes an important element of free will, and is the start of a process which I fear is a damaging one. Look to Europe, see how they are coping with their versions of Socialism. We’ll be watching it shape itself over the next few decades… Stay tuned.

Obama will not be in office long enough to convert the country into a totalitarian dictatorship, nor would he want to. That is not his focus at all. But the path toward these things happens in different ways— sometimes it is a bloody revolution, sometimes it is a more subversive and disguised path that unfolds over many years. This later form, I think, is the modern path toward limited freedoms. Bloody, violent revolutions would never fly here— not at this particular point in history, anyway— the more quiet and secretive undermining of our freedoms is the more likely danger.

And that is my concern with Obama. I called him a pinko commie, but that was a bit of an exaggeration. A bit of one, mind you. I don’t think he knows for sure what he thinks at this point about a lot of complicated forces in society, but this does not get in the way of him making judgments, having a strong perspective backed up with ultimate confidence and unwavering conviction. And the views that he espouses are insidious ones. I would be very wary of electing him, but four or even eight years of Obama would not be enough to destroy American freedoms— just give it a push down the hill.

Brenden Callaway asked about Obama and his history with the Born Alive Infants Protection Act & the Induced Infant Liability Act. Firstly, yes— apparently there are many babies relatively speaking who do survive abortion procedures. I was forced to realize this myself, and it was shocking but not surprising, if you know what I mean. Since this was revealed, the Born Alive Infants Protection Act was proposed to extend protections to these babies who were otherwise allowed to die in hospital storage rooms (hard to believe but true, research it on the ‘net). The issue with Obama is that he would not support the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, and voted against it. Even NARAL Pro-Choice America was in favor of the law… Obama said he couldn’t be for it because he feared it would have a bad impact on woman— don’t ask me how. Anyway, there’s some research for you to do so you can make up your own mind on it. I think its monstrous and sickening, and it has a big impact on the way I perceive this man— how could a reasonable person think something so unreasonable without somehow fooling themselves in some fundamental way?

Right, that was long enough, sorry. Carry on.

“Deliver me from evil…”

The reason my husband I will vote for Obama is that he is the only one who seems to understand that the only way the U.S. will offer future generations of Americans a bright future is not only by electing a competent President, but by inspiring all Americans to become better, in every way conceivable, than they are today.

We have decades of experience watching Republicans thwart Democrats, and Democrats thwart Republicans. We have decades of experience watching Representatives and Senators pork barrel special interest projects onto necessary legislation so they can get re-elected. We have decades of experience with politicians who know that only a very tiny percentage of people will show up at the polls and most can be controlled by well done 30 to 60 second ads that never get at the deep problems our country faces.

Obama knows that if we are to lift our “game” to the next level and stay a world power and leader, it won’t be because we elect a good President (though that is necessary, too), it will be because someone “turned” the American public, someone reawakened the spirit of a people who were once able to create something as magnificent as this country.

I’m not counting on anyone delivering me, my children, or my grandchildren from terrible threats. I own that responsibility–my hard work, my ethical behavior, my belief in this country, my sacrifices for the good of others, my willingness to seriously consider (without slander) the opinions of those with whom I disagree, those will be the things that will “deliver” me and mine…and as our “boat” is lifted by engaging in such actions, so will the “boats” of others in our nation.
