One of the best ways to teach persuasion is to have people argue the opposite of what they believe. I suppose that’s a good way to teach morality as well.

Let teachers do their jobs, and keep political correctness and identity politics out of the classroom.

It is ok for black teachers to put a noose around a students neck – but for students to be able to see why Europeans bought slaves from blacks in Africa in the first place should be mandatory. Hypocrite blacks don’t deserve the right to the free speech they have to disagree…

How do we teach about the Civil War while being politically correct? Both sides believed that their position was justified. Without teaching our kids what both sides believed, we are thinking and making judgements for them. I think that the assignment was actually thought provoking–like a debate club assignmnent in which you are given a side to defend/promote as opposed to the usual drivel that they are spoon-fed. If students are forced to watch Al Gore’s movie several times per class, they should at least be able to have accurate history lessons.

I understand that arguing the opposite viewpoint can teach persuasion, but assigning students to create an ad campaign? Turning the sensitive issue of slavery into catchy ad phrases trivializes it. Middle school students aren’t mature enough to understand “arguing the opposite viewpoint”. This assignment was totally insensitive and tasteless.

One more question: Why was the plantation to be built in South Carolina? Why not New Jersey, where the school is? Hm…are they relying on stereotypes, maybe? As a South Carolinian, I object to my home being presented to middle schoolers as an ideal place to build a plantation (designed by someone from New Jersey, no less). We’ve worked very hard to overcome our past and guarantee equal freedoms and rights for all. The teachers from New Jersey have insulted South Carolina as well.

poor blacks crying again over nothing. i love how they implied the kids will learn to become slave owners someday because of this project. if this puts negative ideas about blacks in white kids heads then, wtf do you think rap did for the last 10yrs? blacks made their own sterotypes and now dont want them to work. lol

Good thing it wasn’t black teachers doing mock hangings on children. Wait, that was two days ago and out of the news…guess it didn’t happen.

Get Real   October 5th, 2007 - 11:01 pm

people get real. If you think this was a great assignment then I guess an assignment on why attacking innocent people on Sep. 11th was right would be a great assignment.

Why dont Grover Middle Try that instead?

If you take all factors into consideration, slavery would probably cost you more than paying employees minimum wage. With slaves, the owner is responsible for providing the slaves with food, clothing, and shelter. With employees, you just have to pay them minimum wage, and the food, clothing, and shelter are their own responsibility.
