Look, it’s the nutty professor

rightwingnutjob   October 3rd, 2007 - 2:49 pm

That nutty professor is going to make millions… until they find out that it causes cancer or something (just kidding).

Looks like the stuff that results when you mix corn starch and water. You get a substance that is very malleable when no force is applied to it, but as soon as you apply force it stiffens up and absorbs the impact. This looks to be the same, if only in principle.

Puts one to mind of the old line about those indestructible “black boxes” in airliners: Why don’t they just make the whole plane out of that stuff? And, anybody in that silly norsk hat should expect to get shovel-whacked.

Jim   October 6th, 2007 - 12:14 am

Ummm… is it not obvious to everyone else that he is wearing protection on his head and knees?

You can friggin see the outline of the helmut and the shinpads under his pants and silly little hat.

I mean c’mon people.

joe   October 9th, 2007 - 9:47 am

Jim’s pointless cynicism will advance science no end. If you watch the beginning of the video he hits it with a hammer when it is in the little container.

Ikkonoishi   October 13th, 2007 - 10:46 pm

Err… he hits him on the head with the stuff on the shovel, but if its already on the shovel then it wouldn’t protect him any because it would harden along the shovel’s shape and transmit the same amount of energy to his head.

Oh wait he is wearing the stuff as kneepads and under his hat. The helmet thing isn’t interesting because helmets don’t need to be flexible, but the kneepads are neat.

Let’s see the guy whack the reporter with the shovel.

This seems to offer amazing protection against damage from sudden impacts.
Should be supplied to older people who suffer from osteoporosis and increased risk of serious injuries from falls.
