I am glad to see a true American stand up to Mexicans who think they can take over the US. I am sorry that only one American citizen took on this issue.

He could have more diplomatic and judging by his actions he was very hostile (pent up anger). I am sure the Mexican owners (who are legally running a business here) were unaware of the law. A simple explanation would have sufficed. This is one reason for all the turmoil in this country, ie… the way we approach and handle situations as Americans.

If the Mexicans were only confused or unaware it’s illegal to fly another flag above the US flag wouldn’t they have asked why TV reporters/cameramen were showing up and taking video. Contrary to the liberal, some people do know why they are doing offensive things and they do them to send a clear message. Maybe if we explain how uncomfortable we are with 12-20 million criminals breaking into the US from Mexico the criminals will realize it’s inappropriate and stop doing it. I’m sure they don’t know it’s a crime. Mexico is well known around the world for stringent observance of laws, isn’t it?

First of all the only US citizens that sneak into Mexico for permanent residence are fleeing from the law in the US. Secondly, if they are caught, they are imprisoned in the not-so-accommodating-as-the-US prison system.

BTW: The fact that these Mexican business owners did not know the law is no excuse. As there is video evidence of their law violation, will they be charged? Is there a law officer in this town that has the moral integrity to do so?

The store guy was surprised. Didn’t appear he had english communication. I would have been angry too if I had to look at that daily.. and no way to tell them “The flag is in the wrong spot” in english. Anger justified. I am a vet too. Learning the language of a country is a good idea.. the rules happen much easier then.

I support the vet and I support our country. If the illegal mexicans love their country so much that they like to see their flag flying above our flag, then they can return to their country where they can fly that flag anywhere and anytime they want. All the concerns over the Mexican flag flying over the flag of the PRESENT United States is heartening however, if we don’t stop the merger of Mexico, canada and the USA into the North American Union, we will all live to see the Stars and Stripes laid to rest along with our Constitution, Declaration of Independence and our entire foundation of what the United States founding fathers envisioned. While the citizens of the USA are distracted by the war in Iraq, the border problem, the election, and other intentionally planned items, the ones who want to make the USA into a euro type country are steadily pushing forward.

This was a fine act that I was very grateful to see. What bothers me is the gentlemen’s age. His generation won’t be with us much longer and we will miss them dearly. I wished it would have been a younger person that stood up for the country. But in our increasingly politically correct school system, I fear that fewer and fewer of our youth have this sense of honor and country. My part in defense of my country will be to continue to home-school my children and hopefully instill the right sense of pride and honor in the country that it so richly deserves.

Call me crazy, but weren’t the Mexicans in Reno first? By the logic of the above comments the Mexicans would be perfectly justified in taking back the Southwest because it was theirs first and we took it by force.

Rather than getting into a violent chicken and egg battle (like Israel and Palestine) why not just live together? I just had lunch at a Cuban place and it was delicious.

Actually the Southwestern United States was ceded to the US via the “Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo” in 1848. This treaty ended the Mexican-American war which was initiated by Mexican aggression after the independent territory of Texas was annexed into the United States. Mexico started hostilities against the United States against the advise of the British and French on April 24th 1846 when a 2,000 strong detachment of Mexican Calvary attacked a 63 man strong US Border patrol. The United States just ended the war that Mexico Started and we won and reaped the benefits. The Leadership of Mexico signed the “Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo” and we also paid $15,000,000 for the territory. Don’t try to rewrite history just because Mexico didn’t have a favorable outcome. The Southwestern United States is ours for the keeping and anyone who suggests otherwise is ignorant of history and needs to read a book.

Do any of you supporting this ever stop to wonder why much of the world recoils from you? Don’t just spit out your anger at me, think… I’m on your side, as an ‘Americophile’ who finds myself defending your country to critics all the time, but what this uptight, semi-psychotic behaviour seems to speak of more than anything else is deep insecurity. The US code does contain instructions on how the flag should be displayed. But, there are no penalties for violating the rules and the law is merely suggestive, evidenced by the word “shall” in the statutes. There is actually case law almost directly on this point. There is no way that any penalty for improperly flying the flag would stand constitutional challenge.

It is VERY clear that the right to burn and deface the American flag is protected as a first amendment right. I’m at school right now and can’t listen to the audio, but anybody who thinks that the guy flying the flag can get in any real trouble for this is mistaken. Sure, a state or local government can try, but they wouldn’t win in the end.

In the end, the veteran should be in more trouble for destroying personal property.

(f) When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the United States flag’s right.
(g) When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace.

Shouldn’t we all be focused on getting our troops out of Iraq? In any case. This could have been handled a lot more maturely. He could have just gone inside the restaurant (or whatever kind of establishment it was) and tell the owner that it is illegal to have our flag underneath a foreign one. And having the media showing this off will only incite more tension. And don’t tell them if they like Mexico so much to move back. I am aware of the code you refer to, but read my post. Courts have consistently held that the statute is only suggestive, and there is no penalty because it would violate one’s first amendment rights. Sorry, but your post just proves the point…

I mistakenly said in my first post that the suggestive nature of the law is evidenced by the word “shall,” but I meant to say “should.” You see how this makes it clear? I’ll say it again because you people don’t listen: it is NOT a crime to fly the Mexican flag above the American flag, or burn the US flag, or urinate on it, or whatever. Such laws have been stricken down by the courts as unconstitutional.

I’m not going to bother to cite cases, but let me explain something to you uneducated folk. There is this body called the Supreme Court of the United States, and they have the power to have laws stricken as unconstitutional.

Its really ironic that the US armed, trained and directed the actions of the largest terrorist group in the world (according to the CIA in 1998), the Kosovo Liberation army then they bombed yughoslavia mercilessly to support the terrorists (who went from being on the INTERPOL most wanted to visiting the Democractic Convention to pay respects) and now we have the same happening here.

I do not have the FREEDOM to do what I want to do. There are these little things called “laws” that I have to follow. You do to. Certainly, some “laws” like the “code” (incidentally the United States Code, where all of the United States codified laws are found by the way)may not have criminal or civil penalties associated with them. Just like the law against desecration of the flag in Nevada, which calls such act a misdemeanor and too has no penalties. But it is the law. Just because there is no consequence to breaking the law doesn’t mean that there isn’t a law. You can look that up, and cite the cases too, if you feel so inclined.

The FREEDOM comments weren’t associated with your posts, either. This act is commendable. The immigration service should investigate the business for harboring illegal immigrants (invaders) and see if their wives and childred are drawing welfare benefits. As a “Native American” myself (1/2 Cherokee), I can tell you that there are no true “native” Americans, just people that have been here longer. There are also no true native mexicans. Also, most mexicans are descendants of the Spanish and the conquistidors. The entire world is made of immigrants. Does that mean that anyone can pick a place and just move in and take it over? NO! The USA fought Mexico in a battle and WON the land we took in the treaty, we also PAID Mexico $15 million. Tell you what… if Mexico wants that land back now, then fine… give us back the money we paid, but take into consideration inflation and real estate values. As a former Marine, I take my hat off to to this guy. Sorry, should have clarified. Obviously, what I meant was that to be born here makes you an American on paper, what you do and say and stand up for is what makes you a true American. I think citizenship should be earned, not just given to any worthless baby born here. Mandatory military service or a test of some kind should be standard to EVERYONE. Flags are pieces of cloth. They *symbolise* things. Fight under a flag (and if you think you have a monopoly of national pride or military valour or territorial conquest, I’d guess you’re not a student of history), and you are obviously fighting for the values of the society it represents, not a square of cotton. Look, there is no moral duty to serve in the military unless our freedom as a sovereign nation is in question. That is not the case now, or arguably any time since WWII. There is nothing to take back. Just because somthing makes you angry doesn’t give mean it is illegal or not protected by free speech. Any state law that would punish someone for not flying the flag properly would be struck as unconstitutional as has been shown time and time again.

You obviously know and care little for what veterens so proudly and feverishly strive to protect not only our country, constitution, and flag. Remembering that all veterens who died before them from the Revolution to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq of all races creeds, colors, and despite country of birth fought to protect all the rights and ideals surrounding the flag. The American Flag is undoubtedly the most recognized symbol of freedom in the world. Protecting the American Flag is an honor that fewer than we would like can truely grasp. You obviously do not.

I will state one other example of patriotism that occurred on national news; back in the 70’s Rick Monday then a Chicago Cub outfielder rescued a flag that was about to be descrated during a baseball game in front of thousands of fans, though it was 3 decades ago I can still see the image of Rick Monday racing to the outfield and securing the U.S. Flag from its would be defiler.

You, sir, may be more educated, more glib and more polished in presentation but you are not a patriot, you are a taker, you are here in the United States and seem to be a person who thrives in the good that America offers and will the first to complain that something, anything is not up to the high ideals and standards you desire.

I’m proud of the vet for the action he took but he only went half-way. He should have removed the Mexican flag, handed it back to the (bar?) owner and told him to take it – and himself – back to Mexico.

My sons a vet and fighting this war right now and I am very proud of this vet. I think if I had seen that I would have called the police. I’m VERY proud of the vet and I will stand beside him any time as I’m sure MANY other vets and lots of real patriots would. Time to show the illegals the way home and CLOSE THE DOOR BEHIND THEM!

The Mexicans are well aware of what they are doing, coming to the US in droves, and taking over the jobs and just plain taking over. They think that the west should be back in Mexico’s possession; and since it’s not, they’re just going to come live here and take over. I’ve had some of my Mexican students tell me that right in the classroom. It’s the silent invasion. There’s no more appropriate word for it. And they’ll come here illegally if they can get away with it. And they do because our gov’t is more concerned with being politically correct and supplying businesses with cheap labor. Look at the manufacturing in the US before cheap imports and now after. We pretty much don’t have any manufacturing jobs here anymore. Well, now we have cheap labor invading by the millions! Watch out. It’s going to get very bad as long as our spineless gov’t does nothing to uphold the laws. Many jobs out west now require employees to be bilingual. How do you like that? Aren’t we in the US not Mexico? Do people not realize what’s happening out here in the Western States? People need to start speaking up and doing something about it. Write to your senators and complain. This is crazy!! I say, way to go, Jim Brossard. He had the guts to uphold the law instead of letting the Mexicans walk all over us Americans! We need more people like him.

I’ve had Mexican high school boys hit on me and bribe me with money to pass them through classes. Totally corrupt. I wasn’t surprised to find out the college students in CA were caught changing grades and paying money for good grades. In fact, it all goes hand in hand with what’s happening nowadays. It’s just disgusting. And teachers are supposed to just slide these kids through their classes even though they don’t do the work, put the effort in or even know the language very well. Something’s definitely wrong with this picture. And the high school diploma and college degree’s are going to be devalued 20 years from now.

How many mexicans have you seen that have been immunized?? Look at the diseases we are experinceing today in our country that we thought we had stopped by having our kids immunized while they were young..We recently had a outbreak of Mumps (yes mumps) in Iowa and over 700 cases were treated.That may sound funny that mumps was an outbreak, but when an adult gets the mumps it can be very dangerous..Look at areas around the country, we are seeing T.B., Polio, and several other diseases that have been brought in by these people, they have no programs in many of the small villages they grew up in and we are having to treat our selves and children all over again because of them. The are ruining our hospitals (using the emergency room for free) and not paying taxes and sending their children to our schools.(no school taxes) and yet they want us to change our langage so they can study. They say they do jobs the American people will not do; if the companies would pay a decent wage to the workers, they can get plenty of american workers..Instead, we get a bunch of infected workers with god knows what they are infected with and we are susposed to feel sorry for them..On top of that, they try to fly the Mexican flag over the American flag?? I don’t think so..over my dead body, by god, I am a veteran and I will do everything I can to stop this invasion of America, and one thing I am doing is writing and calling my senators, congressmen, and local commissioners and telling them if the continue to support these illegals, watch out at election time..This is the only message they understand, they want to get re-elected at any cost and they respond to my calls, and e-mails when I start talking about election time..
Try it and you will see that you will get mail back from them expressing their concern you are upset about this immigration problem we are ( we created outselves) having. There are over 29 million illegals in America today! It is up to us to stay on our elected officials about this problelm..Remember, the politicans are suspose to be serving us, and not the other way around.

Ok folks, hold on here. I was born and raised in Texas. Every morning before we went to class we said the “Pledge of Allegance”, including “one nation under God”! I live in an area that has signs in Spanish and English, in our schools, presentations to the students and parents is given in English and then in Spanish. I am right on the border of Mexico, we have a continuing problem with illegals coming into our city and stealing, raping and killing. In many of our stores and businesses that play intercom music you hear as much if not more Spanish than you do English.

We did NOT forcefully take this part of the country from Mexico, we BOUGHT it, read your history books before you make statements that we forcefully took this land from Mexico, it is not true!! That is an excuse for them to try to forcefully take over our country and it is totally a lie!

How can anyone put down this gallant veteran that fought for OUR country and is STILL fighting for it. Bravo to this brave man that loves our country enough to stand up for it and do what he did! I would love to meet this GENTLEMAN and give him a big hug for what he had the guts to do. No one else did!! And, he was RIGHT!! I’ve known all my life the US flag ALWAYS flys on top. As a matter of fact, Texas is the only state that really has the right to fly their flag with the flag of the United States of America, but always on the bottom!!! Look that up in your history books too so you will know why!

I live in Arizona and work in an elementary school as an SEI teacher. My neighborhood is comprised of about 90% Mexican families. Believe it or not, not all of them are trying to make this another Mexico. They just happen to be from Mexican decent. Do you really think a desire to preserve your culture and language is disrespectful to America? Isn’t our diversity what makes us so great?

But with all the talk about this being a crime (If it’s a crime, please tell me the penalty for violating it in the US Code), what about the crimes the Vet committed (although they might have been done “honorably”)?

Criminal Trespass? (nev. Rev. Stat. 207.200: “any person who, under circumstances not amounting to a burglary … goes upon the land or into any building of another with intent to vex or annoy the owner or occupant thereof, or to commit any unlawful act.”

You are free to take whatever political stand you want on this. That’s the beauty of America. What would your reaction be if someone of Mexican heritage came on your property, took down your flag and threw it on the ground, all while brandishing a 6 inch knife?

You want to change the world? Stand outside the store and protest. Demand that the city or federal officials to somehow enforce a law with no penalty. Try talking to the store owner. But vigilantism and intimidation should not be part of the equation.

I wish our politicians had the guts, brains and common sense this Vetran has. Our Country would be in a much better situation. All of our ancestors (except for the Native Americans) came from other countries but when they arrived in the U.S. they became AMERICANS! They learned the language, ENGLISH! 33 years ago when I was in Europe it was mandatory for the High School kids to learn to speak English. I could converse with them a lot better then, than I can now in my own country with some immigrants that have been here 20 years. This Vetran should be publically applauded. As for the Mexican flying the Mexican flag above the American Flag, it should be illegal and he should be put in jail. OR better yet, If he loves Mexico so much that he flies that flag here in America, why is he here? Go Back!

Thank God for true Americans like this Vet. If more people stood up to be counted maybe our no good politicians would have to do the right thing and send illeges back to where they came from. I am in the Military and I am glad someone stood up for this country. Running a business has nothing to do with flying the flag. It should be common knowledge to educated people the order when flying a flag. Its pathetic that the town would allow this Federal offense to be committed and go unpunished. I will be filing a official complaint against the city and I encourage everyone else to do the same if the veteran is brought up on any charges. He is the hero and the resturant owner is the criminal.

I applaued the Reno veteran, but wish it had been the National Gaurd doing that very same thing under George W’s orders.

I am glad to see that other vets feel the way I do, this is an article that I am having printed in our Stalag XVIIB newsletter next month. This man has my full backing and respect for what he did.

I was honored on POW/MIA day at the local VFW here in Englewood, FL. The following write up was in our local newspaper.

Ceremony honors missing and prisoners:

World War II veteran Ed Dostie was the honored guest at Saturday’s POW/MIA
Day of Recognition and Remembrance ceremony at the Clyde E. Lassen VFW Post
10178 in Englewood. But being honored did not mean he was happy.

Dostie, a prisoner of war for 23 months, spoke about the indifference and
lack of respect paid to the American flag by parade watchers, citing a
parade he walked in three years ago in his hometown of New Market, N.H., and
the Pioneer Days Parade in Englewood.

With tears in his eyes, Dostie said, “Some of our buddies died for that
flag.” With stronger words, he let the crowd know how angry he gets “when
people do not even rise when they see a flag being carried in front of
them.”

“Show respect for our country’s flag,” he said. “Simply put your hand over
your heart, whether you are man or woman.”

There was more to the article but this is what I want to convey.

I know I mentioned the flag in my last comments but it is something I believe in and would hope that someday the people around this country would start to honor OUR FLAG the one that all of us fought for.

With illegal immigration such a hot topic today, do you really think this Mexican fool was entirely innocent?? He knew EXACTLY what he was doing. He meant to incite, he just didn’t think a gringo would stand up to him. BTW, generally when Mexicans move in, it is the END of diversity. It is their way or the highway. You are either lucky in your neighborhood or psychotic.

I am proud of this veteran too! My husband fought for America, not Mexico. We know the Mexican’s strategy and we cannot let them succeed. We should all be so proud of America to take a stand. We are behind him 100%. Thank you with all our heart.

This guy acted on his own accord to take the matter into his own hands. Not the legal thing to do. In the United States we have a legal system which all residents are to abide by. The veteran took property which didn’t belong to him, I believe we call that stealing. He could possibly be charged with burglary, theft and displaying a weapon in a public place. The United States of America was once called a melting pot of different cultures. Why is there so much animosity towards Mexicans. I have a distinct feeling that if this would have occurred in Boston and someone was flying an Irish flag above the US flag, the same incident would not have received the same reaction. Just something for everyone to think about. Are you opposed to immigrants or are you opposed to Mexicans. If its the latter then you are in fact a racist.

Congratulations to the individual from cutting down the flag, problem is, he cut down the wrong flag. I would have cut down the mexican flag and run ‘old glory’ back up the mast and left the mexican flag on the ground…

maybe he phoned in for a news crew just for the publicity but what he did was sweet :)

Coming from a family of military men and women, I am proud to see that this American Vet stood up for the law. Cheers and kudos to him and his family. I am happy to see someone had the balls to walk up and make a stand.

At the same time, I’m disgusted that the law enforcement did nothing to resolve this issue. Surely that business had been open for a while, which means that the owners had been doing that for quite a while as well. With that being said, action by law enforcement should have happened long before a retired Vet had to make his way down to the shop to remove an illegally flown flag.

To that end, and for those who are crying “Boo Hoo! The immigrants/fence jumpers simply didn’t know the law or couldn’t speak English!” Just keep this in mind: When your jobs are being taken by them at a lower wage, you are outraged at the injustice, are you not? When they live on SSI and unemployment, and take any benefits the state and federal programs will let them have, on your dime, you feel robbed, do you not? When your child is gunned down by their gangs, you hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law, do you not?

If they are allowed to take unfair advantage of our benefits, jobs and take the lives of our children, we have a right to hold them to the same laws as everyone else. Frankly I don’t care if they know the law or not, they should sit in jail for it just like everyone else.

But then again, that’s just my two cents.

Every other race that has melted into America and has made it the culture that it is today. America is a multi-cultural nation. Hispanics, mostly Mexicans, have decided not to conform to the American way of life. This sign of disrespect to the US flag is a prime example of it. You want to live here? Great! Fight for your country, vote, get registed, become CITIZENS.

Now, as for the “we invaded the US when the Native Americans roamed” comment I only have to say this-

Every American has built this nation to what is is today. However, it seams that more and more illegal immagrants seam to tear it down. They take our wellfare, import drugs, and don’t contribute to the society. You think an illegal pays taxes? Don’t make me laugh. Mexicans and other immigrants are more than welcome to come the the United States…but there is a process you have to follow.

I’m glad the vet took the US flag down. He showed what a true AMERICAN would do.

I am all for that veteran, but if he loved that flag so much, and were a true man about it, he would not have disrespected the flag himself by just crumpling it in his hand. I learned about respect for the flag, and you do not just take it down and ball it up in your hand. That there is also disrespect. Disrespect to our country as well. And any true veteran and american would know not to do that.

I just realized something that may settle (at least as far as why the store owner was not (and could not) be arrested/charged with any flag-related “crime”. Texas v. Johnson & US v. Eichmann, two US Supreme Court cases decided almost 20 years ago, held that because of the protections of the First Amendment, no person could be punished for burning the US flag. Obviously by implication, if you can’t punish people for burning it, then you can’t rightly punish people for flying it below the flag of another nation, flying it the wrong height, flying it night, etc. I’m sure that’s not what people want to hear, but that’s just the state of the law.

The only person guilty of any crime is Broussard (criminal trespass, theft, assault, burglary, displaying a deadly weapon, armed robbery), and because he called the news camera to come down there and watch him, he handed a prosecutor very powerful evidence of his guilt.

That’s “piece of evidence”. Sorry.

As I read many of the comments here, I see that some of you just don’t get it…You say,”It’s only a flag!” It isn’t just the flag, it’s the attitude of people who would dare come to this country and show outward disrespect for the American way of life and it’s people.

Flying the American flag below another is like spitting in your face, and the Mexican people know it, and laugh!

I know that I “get it”. I understand that the flag is important to you and to many other Americans, that you feel a very sacred bond to it, and that the flag being flown this way deeply upsets and offends you.

That being said, it doesn’t give you or Mr. Broussard the right to commit several felonies and misdemeanors because you are offended by someone else’s speech. That’s the 1st Amendment, and part of living in a free society is having to put up with other people doing/saying things you don’t like. You don’t have to remain silent. After all the cure for bad speech is more speech. But the cure is not dumping the rule of law, creating a potentially deadly situation, and taking matters into your own hands. That’s mob rule.

The flag flying was directly related to the “round-up” of illegal immigrants in the Reno area from local fast food chains. They were arrested for working on fake or stolen American Social Security Numbers.

My husband (American born and raised) had to recently prove that he was the rightful user of his social security number. Someone working at a Kentucky Fried Chicken with a Hispanic name was using his number. It was on our dime that we had to prove this. So yes, we are very happy that someone is doing something to stand up for OUR country.

When my children are harassed at school on a daily basis because they are white, is another reason that I have issues. When we bring it to the schools attention, we are told not to be racist.

I am not Racist! But I want to be able to get into the doctors office and not have to pay more than the person sitting next to me because it is assumed that I have a better job. And why are they driving a new Ford F-150 and I am in an old Ford Taurus without air conditioning?

This was way more than just a flag flying in the wrong position.

There is no law that I am aware of that dictates to a private entity how they want to fly any nation(s) flag(s). I believe only government institutions are required by law to fly flags under certain rules outlawed by congressional legislation and UN treaties. Perhaps I’m wrong and someone can cite the law for me but that is not how I understand the law to be. This does not (or at least constitutionally should not) apply to private individuals and private property. Last I heard we AMERICANS still retained the RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH which by definition must include THE RIGHT TO FLY A FLAG ANYWAY WE WANT TO. Unless you apes think being American means violating people’s rights to free speech then I can just dismiss you people off as a bunch of Nazis. Rights protect things like speech even if you may find it offensive or not. My Sister sent me this clip for one reason. Her four brothers served ther country on foreign soil. I personally served four terms in Viet Nam. You assume the bar owner is an illegal immigrant. To my knowledge, that hasn’t been proven. He could be a citizen, in which case I think you owe him an apology.

Mr. Broussard was not a mob, but by his action, he subscribes to the position that because I have the physical power to do something (aided I guess by his Kabar), I can do it. That is not the rule of law, that is rule by the most powerful.

Similar to this is your reliance on the “illegals are breaking the law” argument. That doesn’t mean private citizens or the Government should go around shooting them, does it? Does it mean private citizens should be going around and threatening them and their property with deadly weapons? I grew up with the Mexican people…I still live around them…do you? I know them, and I’m not saying that they are all bad or all good. I do know their mentality.

For the people yelling that Texas was taken from Mexico by the U.S. Government, they are showing their ignorance, or stupidity.

Texas was taken by the citizens of Mexico, mostly, and the citizens of Texas at that time were Mexican citizens, if they were anglo or spanish or whatever their origin. There was even people of Spanish decent at the Alamo, taking Texas from Mexico.

They took Texas from Mexico just as the Americans took the eastern states from England. They didn’t turn it over to the U.S. Government, they created their own government called the Republic of Texas.

Then about 15 years later they joined the United States. So, if you mexican sympathisers are going to spout tripe about the U.S. government taking Texas, you need to go back and study your history books.

I saw just the other day that they also paid mexico for the other western states. Maybe not what it was worth but they were paid.

Maybe the U.S. was working behind the scenes to help but the mexican government is doing the same thing.

When the Constitution becomes just a piece of paper then all you flag wavers won’t have to worry about the flag. We’ll all be FORCED to wave the flag. IT’S NOT THE FLAG, PEOPLE, IT’S THE CONSTITUTION WE HAVE TO PROTECT!!!

You say the bar owner didn’t come from this country. How do you know that? And why does it matter? If he’s a citizen, it shouldn’t. I sense your bigger issue is that he doesn’t “look” like an American.

I’m not going to sit here and qualify to you that I know anything about the Mexican people. I am not going to rely on your pitiful collection of anecdotes that you try to rely on to prove they are all criminals. They are not, you know it (or should), but your hatred for them allows you to engage in all this sort of intellectual (and moral) dishonesty.

At the end of the day, it seems some of us are so upset that this happened, that America went from a place where everyone saluted and respected the flag and tradition to a place that is foreign and confusing. I think it is a good thing that people in a America can talk about creating Atzlan (it’s a stupid idea and will never happen and you as well as anyone who believes it will succeed are kidding yourselves/themselves). It’s a good thing people can talk about it, so others can meet those ideas with stronger and better ones. The idea of Atzlan is almost as ridiculous as people from the League of the South meeting this week to discuss seceding from the Union. But I don’t hear anyone in here complaining about that, even though that act is clearly treasonous (while the bar owner could arguably have been expressing support for Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Americans). You would think an active rebellion that aimed to destroy America (presumably giving us a new flag) and our Constitution (which no one in here really seems to care about, but is what made and makes America great (it’s not great because we were white and Christian)) would meet with the ire of all the self-proclaimed patriots that have scrawled words on this wall. But Guy, you have not, they have not, and I think it speaks volumes about what you really don’t like about America. It’s that there are people who look different from you, who act different from you, and who think different from you. You can’t handle it, and the easy solution is for you to suggest they all leave so that we can go back to a place where we all look, act, and think alike. I’m sorry that you find that so troubling, but it’s reality.

You love throwing around the threat of the civil war. (I hope you really don’t think that’s a good idea, but one never can be sure.) It’s called treason, and do you know what flag your opponents would rally around? (I bet even you can connect the dots….)

Get a brain people, the Mexicans don’t even realize what they did wrong. Is racism really necessary in this day in age? A simple explanation to the owner of the joint would have been enough. That was a shameful thing to do by an American.

It is far easier too look at a pretty piece of fabric than to read a document that basically defines us. Thinking is not required with the flag. Just wave it and everything is right with the world. “Ooh look pretty colors”. When you wrap yourself in the flag you tend to ignore the wrongs. Our flag flew over slavery, the Mcarthy hearings, jim crow, and women not having the right to vote. It is a symbol and as a symbol it tends to sweep these things under the rug. The Constitution on the other hand flips that rug over and forces us to look at ourselves.

Not liking what someone says does not give you the right to force what you believe onto others. It’s obvious that the vet was not concerned with our Constitution because he violated the establishment owner’s rights. If the owner was making a statement then tough!If he didn’t know any better too bad. Have a debate try to convince him of your point. Don’t behave like a baby and throw a tantrum and deface someone’s property. It is ugly and unamerican.

You just don’t get it(or maybe you forgot) They died defending the Constitution. Without it the flag is meaningless to us. Without it we will cease being who we are. Without it The flag will still be here but it won’t symbolize freedom. Instead of worrying so much about how the flag is treated you should worry about how that precious document is being chipped away at.It seems to me that many here just see the Constitution as just a piece of paper. It’s so sad that people look to a flag for their sense of freedom. At best it should just remind them of home.

The Constitution is not a symbol.It is us. Every American should know this. Sadly they don’t so they take their cues from the media and the government to reinforce this false worship of a piece of cloth. I agree that soldiers in combat don’t have that luxury. Symbolism is a good way to keep them going so that they can get home any way they can. Yet they swear to defend our precious document. We as Americans have to know the difference.

The PC crowd is doing their usual thing, screaming racism because of their own pathetic guilt. Go get some counseling. It is cheaper and doesn’t affect those around you. No one is obligated to accept your guilt as their own.

There are all kinds of immigrants in this country, good and bad. Break down those from Mexico, and it is the same thing. Although one of the reasons they like to come here is because “poor people” have brick houses, air conditioning, cars, cable TV, and cell phones (much more than that, but that is a good start). Patriotism is not unique to the USA. What is unique is our ability to question our government. The Germans and Japanese had pride and love for their countries during WW2. I have not read all the comments, there are too many. But, 1. It is not against the law to fly another country”s flag above the American flag it is just against the rules. 2. My guess is these people were just trying to do something that they thought would show that they were both American and Mexican. Why else would they fly both flags??? Yes, it is wrong, not a crime, to fly the flag of another country above our flag (or our flag above the flag of another country) but being wrong is not being a bad person. My parents both were immigrants, who hung the American Flag everyday in our back yard. My father was so proud to become a citizen. Every Tuesday at my daughters school we do the Pledge of the Allegiance as a group, and when I look around and see people standing there not saying anything, without their hands over their hearts, I want to go over and slap them! I am stunned that anyone would expect a US veteran to ignore a US flag being flown in submission to the flag of a foreign country. I would argue that the business owners were lucky the vet didn’t arrest them as he had every right to do. In my opinion, the most disgusting posts here are the ones that can’t understand why a US citizen would be upset over a “piece of cloth”. If you feel this way, I pity you for not having a feeling of loyalty when you look at the US flag. Too bad, for there is no other feeling like it. I am sure you could be happy anywhere and therefore freedom is wasted on you. Ask the mother of a starving child in Haiti what she would give to live under the protection of that “piece of cloth”. US Code TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > § 7

“(g) When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace.”

So no matter where you are from or what US citizens think, the display of the flags could easily be considered inflammatory.

Finally someone does something about it. I am really proud of what he did and I feel we all need to step up and do the same. A flag posted in front of a business is not personal property. Although I think there could have been a much less aggressive way for Jim to handle this, I do agree with him, and I would defend his rights to do so. Ignorance is no defense.
When America was young the immigrants came and assimilated, these days they come for a “better life” and bring their old lives with them. I don’t believe a people should give up their culture, however, I do believe they should respect that of the country they live in. Not many other countries would allow such a flagrant display of disrespect!
Many members of my family have been in one or another branch of the armed service, and fought for this country, though I was unable to serve myself, I am a patriot and if asked would give my life for this country and the freedoms our forefathers gave their lives to insure. Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it. I pray more Americans share Jim’s sentiment, perhaps then our law makers would begin to see the sad state we have turned our inheritance into. By definition, the order in which the flags were displayed. It comes under Federal Law, whereas the other is state or local law. Federal law supercedes local or state laws. This was part of the reason there was a Civil War.

No, the Flag Code is actually Federal Law. It is NOT a tradition, it is law which states partially the US Flag shall not be flown lower than another country’s flag. Not once does the veteran say or do anything racist. When does it say the men on the sidewalk are even the owners of the bar. There is no way to tell if the men speak English or not. No one knows if they are citizens of the US…etc. Keep that bias in check or it will eat away at the foundation of what you say you believe in.
Watch the video again and then one last time but this time pause it near the beginning before the veteran does anything. Take a good long look at the American flag flying in submission to the Mexican flag. Stare at that picture until you feel some tiny semblance of patritotism. Try hard to remember what it was like the first time you understood what the Star Spangled Banner was all about. Think about how you felt the first time you saw the stars and stripes draped over a soldier’s coffin. Imagine what drove the soldiers at Iwo Jima to raise that banner. Remember the first time you saw the flag on the moon. You will probably have to reach into very young childhood memories; back before the education system in this country taught you to be ashamed of your own history and identity. Maybe someday, for a lucky few of you, those feelings of patriotism and freedom and pride will be found in your present and not in your past. At least I pray it will be so.

How the flag is treated and how it is displayed are not open to interpretation. It actually is Federal law. This doesn’t mean anyone has to like it, but since you are commenting on one piece of our governement by referring to the Constituition of the United States, then I’d like to ask that you read this as well. This is not a tradition as someone earlier said. It also is not actually open to interpretation. The flag is a symbol of your freedom that you speak. It has meaning for many people and not just in this country. It is not just some piece of cloth or plastic. You might call me a Nazi. You can if you want. That is your right. Admittedly, the Vet was angry and with good reason. No foreign flag should fly above the national at any time. This bit of info is known in any country in the world. I don’t think ignorance played in this, rather misplaced pride. Although roots are important, this is the country that is giving that person his bread and butter plus the opportunity to own a business. That being said, however, the way the Vet handled it was rather tactless. And rather than teaching a lesson, I am afraid it caused more animosity which is not needed. He allowed the Mexican flag to fall to the sidewalk, thus showing no more respect for that nation’s flag than did the business owner. Instead of reacting as he did, the more diplomatic step would have been to call the police and, therefore, the law which has more weight could have solved the problem. The Vet could have voiced his displeasure. Let’s not forget, though I do not agree with the consequences, the laws and big business owners in this country are at fault for the horrible immigration problem we now find today.

Under Texas v. Johnson, a US Supreme Court decision from 1989, no one can be punished for BURNING the flag. If the government can’t punish someone for BURNING a flag, they can’t punish someone for flying it incorrectly.

There are hundreds of stautes like the US Code section cited above that have been effectively invalidated/overruled due to a court decision but remain on the books. They will not be enforced (Federal Flag Police? You think the FBI is going to mess with this?) and ultimately CANNOT be enforced because they offend the First Amendment.

I’d like to correct you on a few things:

When I said that the flag is open to interpretation I meant that one can take of it what they want. If they despise the flag then it is their right. If someone loves the flag it is their right too. Of course there are standards by which a flag is physically treated. The way it is stored, displayed, flown,… but a person can view the flag anyway he/she wants. And if one wishes to protest it, is just as much of a right as one who wishes to follow it even if it means that someone burns it (providing, of course that it is one’s own and not someone else’s). The Constitution protects that right. Personally I think that no flag should be superior to any other flag with the exception of the U.N. flag. But that’s just me.

At no point did I ever call you or anyone else a Nazi. I called most of you “good Germans” meaning that just as most here are so blinded by the flag so were the Germans which allowed the horror of the war and the Holocaust to happen. There was no dissent but there was a lot of flag waving and blind patriotism as well as ugly nationalism. By the way, to call someone a fascist is not necessarily the same as calling someone a Nazi.

Lastly at no point did any of your relatives give me my rights. They may have fought to defend them as they swore to defend the Constitution but they did not and I repeat did not give me my rights. Our forefathers did and unless your uncles are over, what, 250 or so years old I doubt they could have been there at the Constutional Convention when that precious document was created.

Our government is sending our people off to fight a war in Iraq that cannot be won, while our country is being INVADED by illegals from Mexico. We have not come all this way just to hand our country over to illegal Mexicans. Everyone in American is an immigrant…but we have all had to go through the proper channels to become naturalized. It is easy to say that the government is at fault, but that’s not the whole truth. It is also the fault of the American employers who give the illegals a job. And, please don’t believe the hype that Americans don’t want these jobs…it’s just not true. These employers are just not willing to pay fair wages to Americans to do them, because it is cheaper to pay an illegal. If you really want to make a difference, don’t hire the contractor, the lawn service, etc, who employ Mexicans. I’m not saying all of these work forces are illegal, but the majority are. Also remember this issue come election time. It’s time we take back our country!!!

PS: Did you know that an illegal immigrant can get government paid healthcare before an American can. It’s true. It costs a Mexican (illegal or not) just over $200 to have a baby, while it cost me over $6000. The government is willing to give financial aid to Mexicans, wether they need it or not, just because they are Mexican. If I had any Mexican blood at all, I could have benefitted, but I don’t, so I didn’t. I could have used some help paying for my son’s birth, but I didn’t qualify. It makes me mad because I and every generation before me, have paid taxes so that those in need can have healthcare, but now we are giving that money away to people who aren’t even citizens. On the 4th of July this year a group of Mexicans held a rally at the State legislature bldg. in Carson City. I witnessed the American flag being used as a carpet for children to play on, I witnessed the American flag being used as a blanket, and a cape around another mans neck which was being dragged on the ground behind him. I also witnessed the American flag being used as a car cover on one of their cars, and one was even rolled up in a car window in a heap. When I showed one of the main speakers of the protest the photos I had taken, he called me a racist. Yea, I got the connection too!?!? He then smugly pointed to a purple heart ribbon pinned to his chest and said “See this?” I then thanked him for his service. The thing that confused me though, was If in fact he was a veteran, shouldn’t he above all people know how to treat his flag?

Its going tu get worse if these people from other countries dont start respecting USA. My wife doesn’t want our children to be a racial profiler like me, but at this rate they already see it around them everyday in grade school. Keep USA on top before we end up a third world country, we already see the writing on the wall!!!!!

While there is Federal Law mandating how the flag is to be displayed, it is up to each state to enforce it. What I quoted is from as recently as July of this year. So congress still believes in the Flag Code as law. This is just a simple statement and does NOT mean I am stating you will have to conform to my way of thinking. Quite the contrary. I agree with you that everyone has a right to view the flag in their own way. If someone wants to burn it in protest, that is their right too.

Paragraph two, I am not asking for anyone to give blind patriotism. Quite the contrary, I would rather see everyone think for their self. So many people don’t and blindly follow either the straight Republican or Democrat way of thinking. There is a lot more to living here than following your government around like some blind lamb. I don’t think I called for that anywhere in my post. Someone before you was using the term “Nazi” and I figured that person would read my post and call me the same. Paragraph three, you are right. My relatives did not give you your rights. I’ve been doing my family research and I don’t believe I have any relatives who actually signed any documents founding our country. My own thoughts are that whatever country you are in, you should show respect to them in how you treat their national symbols, including flags. I Believe that if I go to any other country, I should respect their customs and beliefs. They expect it of me, why should I not expect it of them? As a Naval veteran and future teacher this piece made me think about the importance of our great big wonderful free country and why we remain a free country. It is because of men like this gentleman and women like me.

I am a proud American and am currently trying to teach our youth the same thing.

Nothing peeves me more than seeing our flag not flown properly, as well as not saluted properly in our schools. (Now children have a choice on whether to stand or not during the pledge of allegiance, most of those that died for our freedom did not have a choice, it was a necessity.) When the national anthem is played anywhere you stand and salute, not talk or sit, I see this too often.

As for those that are now living in this country, this is your home and should be represented first, your heritage comes second. Hang on to your heritage, but remember what country gave you your freedom and value it, there is a reason you came to live here. If you cannot value that and respect where you now live then go home.

Thank you Mr. Vetern! Finally someone who acts on his beliefs. You must be very frustrated with Washington when you think of your sacrifice and those of other brave men & women who have fought for this country AMERICA!

My family immigrated from Canada 45 years ago and we have become LEGAL citizens and have embraced AMERICA as our country. We did it the legal way and feel very strongly about the immigration issue.

Illegal immigrants are criminals who break the law and should be punished not rewarded with social security, medical benefits, court appointmed attorney when they break the law etc…etc..etc. Maybe if we punished them & treated them as criminals they’d stop coming.

There is an aweful lot of hatred here. Someone even suggested killing all Mexicans! What is that all about? How do you guys even know that the people who run that establishment are illegal immigrants? Sure, the flying of that the Mexican flag over the American flag is illegal, but, there was no need for that guy to go on a rampage and start cutting down the flags. Why not just ask the authorities to tell the owner of the place to take the flag down, or switch the order of the flag? And, if it is a matter of legality, then that guy should be arrested for stealing private property, why doesn’t anyone care about that? That guy would have probably stabbed someone if they interfered. And to that idiot who said that he would have killed them… murder is still illegal, regardless of the nationality of the human being.

Sorry, but there still is room for diplomacy, one of the other things that makes this country great. If everyone just acted on their “feelings” without using their heads then this country would be in real trouble.

And for the people who think that Mexicans have no place in this country, you should have stayed awake during your high school history classes. The entire southwest belonged to Mexico at one point. When it was annexed by the U.S. there were conditions set that the inhabitants of those lands would be allowed to remain on their lands and retain their language, culture, and heritage. It was called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo,so I suggest some of you read about it, and yes, the land which is now Reno was included in that purchase. It is not the fault of Mexicans or Mexican-Americans that the United States has reneged on it’s promises, as it did with the treaties made with numerous Native American nations.

Some of you may think my comments are unpatriotic, but I disagree. I am a 6-year Veteran of the Armed Forces and served in Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. One of the things that makes this country the greatest in the world is the tollerance that most good Americans are willing to exhibit for immigrants. Don’t anyone forget that this is a nation of immigrants. Had a modest degree of tollerance not been shown to our ancestors none of us would be here.

Most here, it seems, are very intolerant of those not like them. They are blinded by a piece of cloth and that alone feeds into their intolerance. They are willing to sacrifice the Constitution in order to have conformity (”Dont like the flag, then get out”).

If this is the view of the majority of Americans (Please don’t let it be) Then we are all in trouble.

No one ever reported that these people were illegal or undocumented or whatever you want to call them. They probably are citizens. The rants , here, on the other hand show a bias that is very ugly.

Good grief people! Stop being insecure about your nationality. If you want to show how good little Americans you are please do so but start respecting those who are different from you.

If you are willing to let the Constitution become meaningless(along with your rights) then stay out of the way of those who are willing to fight to maintain what our freedoms really are.

Sad but true. While I may believe in showing a certain respect for customs and beliefs established in our country, I try to still respect those around me. The vet was wrong to go about this the way he did. I understand his feelings. I was out looking and found this to be of interest on becoming a US Citizen…

Favorable disposition towards the United States. Now, that’s a good one. We have those who are really WAY pro american and think the store owner ought to be lynched, and then we have people who are not happy at all with the US and it’s policies to the point that they could be classified as subversive. Wow. I think the majority writing here have failed this one as well.

Pass the United States Citizenship Test. I wonder if we could pass this test ourselves?

I am proud of my heritage. I do not expect anyone who comes here to be any less proud of theirs. I do expect them to learn the ways and customs of our country. My ancestors did. And my good friends Martin and Ana have done so as well. They took the time to learn the language, the customs, and can quote the constituition better than I can. I am proud they chose me to be their friend.

So, are you and I part of the problem? Or are we part of the solution? I like most of your thoughts. It is good to be able to discuss things with someone on this level rather than the one liners who spout hate without thinking.

I too think the veteran did the right thing. I am also an Army veteran of the Vietam war. Our flag deserves a lot more respect than it gets.

First of all, I want to commend the veteran for what he did! He is fed up waiting for our government to do something about the illegal “aliens” pouring over our borders! Yes I said “ALIENS”!! They are NOT immigrants!! Immigrants come here LEGALLY!! With that said, all you Liberals are forgetting the bottom line here. These “Illegal Aliens” are breaking the law coming into our country unauthorized, and are draining our welfare system dry, that YOU are shelling out of YOUR pockets!! DUH!!! They drive around with NO DRIVERS LICENSE, living 50 people to a house, and they are NOT underpaid!! I see them working all types of construction crews and jobs like brick-laying, roofing, and masonry, and you NEVER see them driving a old vehicle!! Also, they are stuffing their pockets with the TAX FREE money they are being paid here and sending it back home to their families, uh the ones who havent walked across the border that is!!! There are people who have been born here who cannot get the same benefits that are given to these “ILLEGALS”!! Finally someone who is a breath of fresh air here.
I’d like to think that we are part of the solution. I am not against flags( ours or anyone else’s). I am just frustrated that people lose sight of who we are because they feel threatened.
During these times we need to be reminded of who and what we are. We are in danger , not from some foreign threat but from our our selves. It’s so easy to look at a flag and think that all is right with the world but when our rights are slowly disolving and we sit by being “good patriots” (by that I mean not dissenting and pointing out our faults) then the flag will cease to be the symbol that most think it is.
Round World is an example of what the rest of the world thinks of us. That includes our allies as well. We are seen as immature children. He’s right. Most people in this country are jingoistic and closed minded. Just reread some the posts. It’s embarrasing. If you go to Latin America or the Middle East or even Europe and ask for opinions of the flag don’t expect to get many favorable opinions.
Anyway, I just like to see people think. I’d like to see this country live up to it’s ideals and principals on which it was founded. But so far I have seen no evidence of it here. I still remain positive though.

I am glad you are proud of your heritage. We all should be. I myself am proud of my heritage. I feel that if one is to live here then one should learn the ways and customs of the land. I really don’t know how anyone can live here and not learn. I just wish that people could live and let live.

Most of these posts are evidence of society becomming less tolerant of those around them. People tend to let their emotions flow more freely. Thus we have people here referring to the instance as an illegal immigrants one. I don’t recall seeing where the store owner was an illegal immigrant. It is quite possible that his family has been citizens of this country longer than my own. There also is no evidence that I know of that he does not speak English. And to those who say the veteran did the right thing, I don’t think wadding up the American flag and carrying it off was the right thing to do. It is supposed to receive better treatment than that. So, while the vet may have been angry, and while many more people may be angry at illegal immigration, he was still wrong in his actions. Instead, he served as a role model of impatience and hostility. Not good things to let rule a person’s actions.

Our society has become less tolerant and more ignorant.

It may surprise most here but when my students recite the pledge I make sure they face the flag and use the correct hand over their heart. I do it to teach them what the flag is. It is up to them to believe in it or not. Kind of ironic coming from someone who doesn’t believe in the flag very much.

some of these comments make sick and very worried about the direction our countries headed. my grandparents came from italy on a boat with high hopes. ive had family members in many wars,i have served in many wars and i continue to serve my country today. weve all done things that we might not agree with or not very proud of, weve always been proud of our nations colors and proud of our vets, this is not just a flag, this is our blood the blood of our brothers and sisters this is our sweat, our tears, our pain, our pride and most important these colors reprsent the lives that were lost, our brothers our sisters, my brothers my sisters, my bestfriends.

No, Griffo, freedom is not free. I’ve never said it was. I do not believe the vet did our country a service by acting the way he did. I do understand his frustration, however, we need to keep control. To not do so leads to anarchy. He also did not treat the flag with any respect or reverence when he cut it down and wadded it in his hands. At that point, he was treating it as a rag. If it was going to be removed, it should have been with more respect than it was given. I’ve had family members die for our country both in military campaigns and in local law enforcement. I do not believe that the vet’s crime was justified. That is not to say that I believe the Mexican flag should be flown over the American Flag. I just don’t believe that the vet was right in his actions. He let his emotions control those actions. Not a good thing. No, to me it is not just a flag. However, I think a grave disservice was done in it’s name.

I took care of a Mexican flag that was standing straight up while the American flag next to it was standing at a 20-25 deg list.
I went into the business and made them straighten up the American Flag.
I didn`t make the news….why? because I live in a town that would let Mexicans piss on the American flag,if they wanted to,and would do nothing about it.

14 POINTS OF FASCISM

1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism

From the prominent displays of flags and bunting to the ubiquitous lapel pins, the fervor to show patriotic nationalism, both on the part of the regime itself and of citizens caught up in its frenzy, was always obvious. Catchy slogans, pride in the military, and demands for unity were common themes in expressing this nationalism. It was usually coupled with a suspicion of things foreign that often bordered on xenophobia.

2. Disdain for the importance of human rights

The regimes themselves viewed human rights as of little value and a hindrance to realizing the objectives of the ruling elite. Through clever use of propaganda, the population was brought to accept these human rights abuses by marginalizing, even demonizing, those being targeted. When abuse was egregious, the tactic was to use secrecy, denial, and disinformation.

3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause

The most significant common thread among these regimes was the use of scapegoating as a means to divert the people’s attention from other problems, to shift blame for failures, and to channel frustration in controlled directions. The methods of choice—relentless propaganda and disinformation—were usually effective. Often the regimes would incite “spontaneous” acts against the target scapegoats, usually communists, socialists, liberals, Jews, ethnic and racial minorities, traditional national enemies, members of other religions, secularists, homosexuals, and “terrorists.” Active opponents of these regimes were inevitably labeled as terrorists and dealt with accordingly.

4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism

Ruling elites always identified closely with the military and the industrial infrastructure that supported it. A disproportionate share of national resources was allocated to the military, even when domestic needs were acute. The military was seen as an expression of nationalism, and was used whenever possible to assert national goals, intimidate other nations, and increase the power and prestige of the ruling elite.

5. Rampant sexism

Beyond the simple fact that the political elite and the national culture were male-dominated, these regimes inevitably viewed women as second-class citizens. They were adamantly anti-abortion and also homophobic. These attitudes were usually codified in Draconian laws that enjoyed strong support by the orthodox religion of the country, thus lending the regime cover for its abuses.

6. A controlled mass media

Under some of the regimes, the mass media were under strict direct control and could be relied upon never to stray from the party line. Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.

7. Obsession with national security

Inevitably, a national security apparatus was under direct control of the ruling elite. It was usually an instrument of oppression, operating in secret and beyond any constraints. Its actions were justified under the rubric of protecting “national security,” and questioning its activities was portrayed as unpatriotic or even treasonous.

8. Religion and ruling elite tied together

Unlike communist regimes, the fascist and protofascist regimes were never proclaimed as godless by their opponents. In fact, most of the regimes attached themselves to the predominant religion of the country and chose to portray themselves as militant defenders of that religion. The fact that the ruling elite’s behavior was incompatible with the precepts of the religion was generally swept under the rug. Propaganda kept up the illusion that the ruling elites were defenders of the faith and opponents of the “godless.” A perception was manufactured that opposing the power elite was tantamount to an attack on religion.

9. Power of corporations protected

Although the personal life of ordinary citizens was under strict control, the ability of large corporations to operate in relative freedom was not compromised. The ruling elite saw the corporate structure as a way to not only ensure military production (in developed states), but also as an additional means of social control. Members of the economic elite were often pampered by the political elite to ensure a continued mutuality of interests, especially in the repression of “have-not” citizens.

10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated

Since organized labor was seen as the one power center that could challenge the political hegemony of the ruling elite and its corporate allies, it was inevitably crushed or made powerless. The poor formed an underclass, viewed with suspicion or outright contempt. Under some regimes, being poor was considered akin to a vice.

11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts

Intellectuals and the inherent freedom of ideas and expression associated with them were anathema to these regimes. Intellectual and academic freedom were considered subversive to national security and the patriotic ideal. Universities were tightly controlled; politically unreliable faculty harassed or eliminated. Unorthodox ideas or expressions of dissent were strongly attacked, silenced, or crushed. To these regimes, art and literature should serve the national interest or they had no right to exist.

12. Obsession with crime and punishment

Most of these regimes maintained Draconian systems of criminal justice with huge prison populations. The police were often glorified and had almost unchecked power, leading to rampant abuse. “Normal” and political crime were often merged into trumped-up criminal charges and sometimes used against political opponents of the regime. Fear, and hatred, of criminals or “traitors” was often promoted among the population as an excuse for more police power.

13. Rampant cronyism and corruption

Those in business circles and close to the power elite often used their position to enrich themselves. This corruption worked both ways; the power elite would receive financial gifts and property from the economic elite, who in turn would gain the benefit of government favoritism. Members of the power elite were in a position to obtain vast wealth from other sources as well: for example, by stealing national resources. With the national security apparatus under control and the media muzzled, this corruption was largely unconstrained and not well understood by the general population.

14. Fraudulent elections

Elections in the form of plebiscites or public opinion polls were usually bogus. When actual elections with candidates were held, they would usually be perverted by the power elite to get the desired result. Common methods included maintaining control of the election machinery, intimidating and disenfranchising opposition voters, destroying or disallowing legal votes, and, as a last resort, turning to a judiciary beholden to the power elite.

I served in the military in a very dangerous part of the world as a young man, I have relatives who died in our wars, but I have trouble understanding the superpatriot mentality over a strip of cloth. Taking the law into your own hands is never a good idea, even if something offends you. Finnaly, I sometimes wonder if all this hype about the flag (burning it as a form of protest, cutting it up as fashion statement, etc.) is largely a symptom of people with a lot of time on their hands.
