The context was the soldiers making false claims, about their service record or about atrocities. Phony soldiers can either be men that were not soldiers or soldiers that lie about atrocities in Iraq (or Viet Nam). In this sense Kerry was a phony and lied about the atrocities. He lied about being in Cambodia. That makes him a phony soldier. I think Webb being outraged is a hoot. Have you read his books, he is a child pornographer and a deviant. You librul hatin’ folks are really really stupid. Your defense of Limbaugh is hilarious to anyone who read the transcript or actually listened to what the idiot said… You’re dead wrong, simply read the transcript and your defense of Rush was amazingly lame.

1. Rush FIRST (say it 10 times – first, first, first) accused all soldiers who disagree with him (Limbaugh) and not interested of dying in a war “largely about oil” (Alan Greenspan) of being “phony soldiers”. He made no mention of Jesse MacBeth at this time, they were CLEARLY making a general statement about ALL soldiers.

THEN (as in “next”, as in “later”, as in after he called all soldiers who disagree with Limbaugh as being “phony soldiers”) he cherry picked ONE incident of one real “phony soldier” – Jesse MacBeth, who came out and criticized the war in the media. Using a propaganda technique known as “gross generalization” he tried to imply that the soldiers who disagree with him (limbaugh) are ALL just like “this ONE I cherry picked over here… See? They’re ALL like this here one I just cherry picked)

This defense of Limbaugh is extremely weak. Absolutely laughable. Limbaugh ABSOLUTELY accused those solders in harms way in Iraq who want withdraw as being “phony soldiers”. AFTER HE MADE THAT ACCUSATION, he then cherry picked Jesse MacBeth and in an attempt to bolster the case he just made about soldiers against the war being “phony soldiers” using “gross generalization” to imply that ALL soldiers who are for a withdraw are just like the one I cherry-picked.

Honest to God, if you buy into this laughable “defense” of Limbaugh – that he was talking about MacBeth and taken out of context, you must be really, really, really stupid. Sorry, you just are. When I was an 11B (heavy weapons infantry), 64-68, we had a name for civilian males who were always gushing about the troops. We called them “buckle suckers.” Maybe things have changed, but those guys always seemed like — well, we called them homos — who were hot for any guy in a uniform. We didn’t mind chicks who were like that, of course.

The thing is that guys in the service are just guys who happen to be in the service. They join up for lots of different reasons: to get away from home, to impress a girl, because they can’t find a job, to impress their parents or buddies, to get training in a trade, a sense of patriotic duty,and so on. Many of them go on to become brave, even heroic. Some of them go on to become cowards. Many of them go on to be dead or crippled for life. Many of them get messed up in the head. Most of them go on being more or less ordinary, although those who have seen battle are changed forever.

So stop romanticizing the troops. They’re real people, not toy soldiers to fantasize about or icons to use to bolster careless thought-out political positions.
