Meadows   May 15th, 2007 - 1:39 pm

This video response is pretty weak. The blurb on Breitbart said “At issue — Moore’s trip to Cuba and Thompson’s criticism of that trip. Moore noted Thompson’s evident favor for Cuban cigars as a possible violation of the trade embargo.” Unfortunately, he didn’t address one point in Moore’s challenge, and thought he’d be clever by bringing up the case of the Cuban artist who was sent to a mental institution. . .problem is, he told the exact same story of that artist in the article that Moore was responding to! Huh?!?

No, better to completely ignore the points Moore is making about health care (and his hypocricy when it comes to the embargo, re: his love for Cuban cigars) by implying Moore ought to be put in a mental institution for his political beliefs.

Hmmm. . .sounds like something Castro would be on board with.

The GOP ripped John Kerry apart for looking “French” during the 2004 Presidential election. Remember that? LOL! This Fred Thompson guy looks like “Droopy” the dog and hot blond bombshell of a wife that’s about half his age.

Another President that enjoys cigars and is attracted to women young enough to be his daughter? That should blow over well with the “values voters”. It’s amazing how low the party of family values will stoop to in order to beat Hillary Clinton.

Classic GOP hypocrisy. :-)

Nice, I think I like this guy. He has the cigar front and center, obviously has a sense of humor.

I think Thompson suggestion that Moore check-in to an institution is related directly to that fact that MM must be crazy if he thinks he would debate a sloth like Moore and give his sicko movie any legitimacy or free pub. there meadow.

Moore was a debate champ back in the 70’s, but obviously these days he can’t get his point across without a crew of film editors.

Dwight   May 15th, 2007 - 2:19 pm

Blah blah Left, Blah blah Right.

Look at the bigger picture. Moore’s letter went public this morning. Thompson responds hours later. This is the first example of instantaneous debate via YouTube.

This is the first shot in what will become the future of political discourse. I bet within the year you’ll see (or have the opportunity to ignore) HUNDREDS of these back-and-forths in lieu of news cycle soundbytes.

The cultural significance of Thompson’s shot eclipses the message.

Anyone but Hillary   May 16th, 2007 - 9:38 pm

Why are we focusing on someone who doesn’t even understand what a documentary actually is.

Normally, in a documentary, the director does not interject his opinions, bias etc into it. Which is Mr Moore’s specialty.

The fact he thinks healthcare is better in Cuba shows how far out there he is.

Dignitaries from all over the world come to the US to take advantage of its Drs and Health Care facilites. Heck, some folks even jump the border to do it, knowing no ER turns anyone away.

Mr Moore is very simplistic in his thinking of how healthcare can be made accessible/affordable in the US.

When this country figures out to spend more on prevention instead of tertiary care, then healthcare will make sense.

Oh and if Mr Moore is so worried about this issue, why doesn’t he give away some profits to provide care to folks who can’t afford it? Even Bill Gates gives away massive amounts of cash.

If you are going to comment on social change, how about you also put your money where your mouth is.

As the son of Cuban imigrants forced to leave their homeland and start from scratch I find Mr. Moore to be ignorant to the reality of modern day Cuba. Health care may be promised to everyone on the island if and when available, but I wouldn’t want my life in the hands of a skilled physican without resources.
Castro has made many outlandish claims in his forty plus years as the Cuban ruler and I wouldn’t doubt him taking credit for superior global health care. Mr Moore,if ever you find yourself terminerly ill ,I hope you find yourself in Cuba with “El Comandante” as your surgeon

Maybe Thompson should take a close look at the health care catastrophe in this country (since he’s thinking of running for President) before he makes childish remarks regarding such an important issue. But wait, the Republic Party is the one that has decimated all of the programs that actually help the American people and are trying to turn this government into a theocracy.

Chris L   May 19th, 2007 - 2:10 pm

Typical full of himself republican doesn’t have the guts to actually debate somebody. That’s the biggest clucking ‘chicken’ I’ve seen in a long time.

Come on Fred, how do you expect anyone to vote for you if you fold like a house of cards?.

Marla   May 19th, 2007 - 2:23 pm

Is there a democrat alive who knows what the f they’re talking about? “Republicans decimated programs” that actually help the people. Puhleeeze. Why don’t you and Moore hop on a raft and float down to cuba, Kathleen? With any luck, maybe it’ll sink.

Fred Thompson counters brilliantly the hypocrisy of a loony left fascist and human waste named Michael Moore.

Jackie   May 19th, 2007 - 2:44 pm

GA offered an extrememly inexpensive health care plan and so few residents of GA signed up for it that it was finally dropped. Have you ever noticed how people have money to eat out at restaraunts, drink beer, and smoke cigarettes but have no money for health care. We will all one day regret looking to the government to solve all our problems. While I respect Michael Moore’s opinion I don’t respect his delivery.

Ken Phelps   May 19th, 2007 - 3:21 pm

Yeah, old Fred’s an actor all right, just like the rest of the radical right….all talk and no hat. Maybe he should re-acquaint himself with the apothegm that “it’s better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”.

Davey Do   May 19th, 2007 - 3:23 pm

Hey Fred (and the rest of you history buffs) do you know why the U.S. and Cuba are at odds? – You can thank the old U.S.of A. for creating another bad situation.

notafan   May 19th, 2007 - 4:44 pm

That was lame. The truth is, this would be great publicity for Fred, if he was on the right side of this issue. However he is is not and would lose the debate, so he calls Michael crazy from his protected office. Very impressive…He obviously had the “time in his schedule” to do the original interview and to do a follow-up commercial..hmm..guess he isn’t that busy…

Jackie   May 19th, 2007 - 4:51 pm

Obviously Davey Do wasn’t alive during the Cuban Missle Crisis.

Gwen   May 19th, 2007 - 8:04 pm

Gotta love Fred Thompson. I hope he runs for President in 08. Michael Moore is a joke…I wish he would move to Cuba since he thinks it’s so great there. I’m sure Castro would give him the VIP treatment as long as the media was involved.

John Smith   May 19th, 2007 - 8:27 pm

http://www.nathanielturner.com/nicolasguillen.htm

I did a little research concerning Guillen. He was a poet, not a documentary filmmaker. I also find no evidence of Thompson’s claims concerning a mental institution or shock therapy. It appears that the Basset Hound is nothing more than a typical lying, right wing coward!

Tim H.   May 19th, 2007 - 8:59 pm

I just love how Michael Moore makes all the Tightie-Righties get in a bunch over something they haven’t even seen yet.

Oh, well – FOX noise loved the film. Check it out for yourselves on their site.

As for Fred — he should stick that Cuban cigar where the moon don’t shine. His response to Moore’s challenge amounts to little more than, “I don’t have [b'gawk] time..[bok-bok-bgawk] to debate..[b'gawk].”

Cowards on the Right, indeed! LOLz!

Son Of a WWII VET   May 19th, 2007 - 9:30 pm

I don’t know if every American knows this…but it might give you a moment of thought…I don’t know the exact date when this was made into law…but in the past ten or fifteen years the Senate and Congress …gave themselves huge raises and also cancelled their SOCIAL SECURITY status and gave themselves FULL SALARY when they retire…for all members even if they served but one term…and that was just outrageous…but what was obscene was they created a HEALTH CARE SYSTEM that gave them 100% coverage…no Medicare or Medicaid or any costs…so…when I see our Senators…or Congressman talk about mental illness …and have no idea what it would be like to be a AMERICAN Citizen who will be retiring on Social Security and getting health care that failed my father…you see, my father fell at home which led to his passing…he was a WWII Vet…for months before that fall…I had tried to get the VA Hospital to give him care…they said he was able to care for himself…and that if something serious happened or changed in his health they would see if they had an available bed. I don’t think Mr. Thompson has a clue about what it is to serve the country and die in neglect…I have visited the VA Hospitals…I have seen for myself the sadness and the recent debacle which was seen on TV about the care for the current Vets is real…Mr. Thompson is using this new Internet Medium to promote himself…this Cigar in his mouth…was it the same Cigar used by Mr. Clinton? You see when I see a politician doing this Arrogant snide…degrading of Mr. Moore’s Constitutional Rights and people think it’s cute and funny…I say…People who live in Glass houses shouldn’t throw Bricks…Michael Moore is not 100 % right about anything…but he isn’t afraid to make a stand on issues that most people…actually the majority of people are in fear of or have been duped by the media and the government…we are in IRAQ…for OIL…I don’t understand why Americans want to undermine filmmakers who risk their lives to even find a simple shred of truth…so…if you think a man who is so self righteous and pompous should be President…then that is your right…but I see The Former Senator as a Brilliant Actor…a great leader? No, a Brilliant Actor yes…acting isn’t the real world…acting like a soldier who has been destroyed by War is not close to having to live with the aftermath for the rest of your life…just visit the 24,000 paralyzed and crippled soldiers who have come back from Iraq…I haven’t seen the film…but I do know that Mr. Moore always finds a shred of truth that leads to a bigger truth…and that is something that needs to be supported…not feared…this is America? Land of Free Speech? Then this short film by Mr. Thompson is his right…and it is mine to speak out in my father’s passing that he didn’t fight on Omaha Beach …and the Battle of the Bulge to have anyone suggest that Mr. Moore is not sane…they always attack those that are seeking the truth…it’s a road less traveled…
I hope…the truth is discovered…we live in such a perilous time…a nation that has no interest in what is really going on…will suffer what all great nations do when they live in denial…just read a good history book…All the Best to those that seek the truth…where ever it may be buried…

I really liked Fred in Law and Order. Having said that.. if more people were like Michael Moore and not afraid to stand up and say what they think this world would be better off. Our government has gone to **** in a handbasket. Stick with TV Fred.

steve-o   May 20th, 2007 - 1:30 am

everyone replys to the cuba remarks, what about canada they have a dictatorship also? he used cuba 2 prove a point, there health care is same as canadas, having patients treated in cuba is more embarassing to us americans, than them being treated in canada.

Run, Fred, Run!   May 20th, 2007 - 9:17 am

Simple. Perfect.

No, he doesn’t “address” Michael Moore’s points because he’s not going to elevate Mr. Moore to a point of relevancy. This turned the tables right back on Moore with a “check out the log in your own eye” shot.

Sigurd   May 20th, 2007 - 10:11 am

Yesterday, the World Health Org published its list of countries and their longevity rankings. The study was based on a number of criteria like availability of food, health care, infant mortality, etc. Odly enough, Cuba and the US were tied somewhere in the thirties. If Cuban health care is so superior to the US, why didn’t their ranking reflect that? Conversely, why wasn’t our ranking higher? Perhaps our sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise may speak volumes on our part, not a less able health care system?

Also, regarding the cigars…Cuba isn’t the only country in the hemisphere to produce cigars. Has someone taken a peek into Fred’s humidor, or is it just an attempt by the fearful to marginalize a potential powerful candidate?

Corry Ander   May 20th, 2007 - 10:58 am

Fascinating thinking on the part of the anti-Fred crowd. I don’t think you folks really understood the video–or chose to misunderstand.

As to the son of a vet: what is it you think you earned by being a veteran’s son? The credit and credibility go to the father. You really shouldn’t ride on the coat-tails…

But, as a veteran, I think I’d rather speak to the merits of the ideas, and not claim any special “rightness” on the issue of Fred Thompson just because I’m a vet.

You folks really should develop some integrity–just like Mr. Moore should.

KYJurisDoctor   May 20th, 2007 - 12:06 pm

I guess Michael Moore is NOT smart enough to pick his fights. Then again he may just be looking for publicity:

It is clear that not only is Fred Thompson AFRAID for a full debate with Michael Moore, but he can’t even respond to a single point the man made. If Thompson gets the nomination he’s going to get demolished by whatever the Democrats throw at him.

Cigar-in-mouth, turning away from camera… perhaps not scripted, but certainly very cheesy and contrived drama. Plus, a swipe at the mentally ill, less than a month after Va Tech? THAT’S Presidential! This guy (Fred) is a *******, and will never be a REAL pubnlic servant – he’ll just play them on TV and in the movies.

Chris Bourne   May 21st, 2007 - 9:30 pm

Mikey Moore is a nobody. Why would ANYBODY democrat or republican debate him? Anybody that thinks it’s cowardly not to debate him is as ignorant as he is for thinking somebody actually would. No wonder we had that moron Clinton in office for 8 years….look at the ignorant statements made here thinking Moore is actally worthy of anybody’s attention.

Fred Thompson tells it like it is. If that angers you or perhaps makes you cry, you are a liberal hack. Go hang out with Rosie O’ and Moore so you can plan you next assault against our great country. Perhaps you all can return to Cuba and persuade Castro to take all our illegal non-citizens. If it’s as great as MM says it is there, they will all be more than glad to go!! Two birds, one stone!

Madam Zorba   June 1st, 2007 - 10:59 am

You could almost hear “End Scene” Thompson isn’t a tough guy, but he plays one on TV. I’m not fan of Michael Moore, but healthcare is a real problem for real Americans. People go bankrupt or go with out medical treatment because of high health care cost. Americans who have always worked full time, pay taxes and try to support their families. This issue requires real leadership from our presidential candidates and not just “play acting”.

You Moore fans are all being duped by this phony. In his newest film he savages HMOs and pharmecutical companies. It didn’t stop him from buying stock in Pfiuzer, Merck, Genzyme, Elan PLC, Lily, Beckton Dickinson, and Boston Scientific. In “Crapenhype 911″ he attacked big oil And defense contractors. At the time he had stock inSunoco, Noble Energy, Schlumberger, Williams Companies, Transocean Sedco Forex, and Andarko. Defense contractors? He owned stock in General Electric, and!!!!! Halliburton. Evil corporations? Noble , Ford, Aol Time Warner, Honeywell, and McDonalds. He is a true man of his word!! All these facts are from Moore’s tax returns. Even his 11 lawyers couldn’t get around the law to stop it.

Regina Cervantes Miller (one of the responders tht went to Cuba with Moore) thumbs her nose at the United States Embargo and The Treasury Department. Senator this woman is not who she claims to be. I know her well and all of it is lies. She is media driven and now she has been disgrace to our country. Michael Moore is just another Hollywood nut that wants to have a platform. He needs to really put his money where his mouth is. Can they do that in Hollywood? Or do they just support platforms. Hollywood types are losing their influence. Thank God!

Fred Thompson his response is beautiful and flawless. His approach with the cigar a breath of fresh air. His response says more about the freedom of expression than any of Michael Moore’s films or press.

Grow up Michael Moore.

sean doyle   July 10th, 2007 - 1:18 pm

Very slick Thompson, but you basically dont have the guts to debate MM. The arrogance of your distant, remote, virtual rebuttal, only emphasizes clearly what MM commentates on daily. The arrogance and aloofness of power in America. Scoff all you like, but the internet is emerging as a democratic force, and phonies like Thompson will be exposed.

jeremy   August 1st, 2007 - 7:19 pm

Fred Thompson isn’t a consevative. I don’t know anybody that supports him. I don’t know anything that he stands for. All I know is the people on tv say I should like him.

Bob   August 2nd, 2007 - 9:44 am

Someone, such as Castro, who hates the US enough, and has lots of money from robbing the locals blind for 40 years, could set up a sham health care utopia for the wealthy. An independent observer, such as Michael Moore or Joe Wilson, who wants to bash the current administration can cherry pick any facts he wants to present some point of view. Our duty is to try to stay informed through the use of the internet and be skeptical when outlandish claims are made about banana republics. Also check out Carter’s response to the genocide occurring in Cambodia during his watch.

Kathryn   August 5th, 2007 - 3:32 pm

I cannot believe enlightened citizens could ever support this creepy actor! What a sorry lot the GOP has to offer if this is the best they’ve got. Any of you heard of Ron Paul? Check him out and get your heads out of the sand. If you think of yourself as a conservative and a Christian…ask yourself what Jesus would think of all this war and lying and not taking care of the sick…unless they have a LOT of money. Arm yourself with knowledge…it is right at your fingertips. True Patriots are not just “followers”. A mind is a horrible thing to waste
