"The kids were kind of grossed out by it, and I as well. It's a dead animal in the street and they just striped it right over."

Mr Hyde   September 26th, 2007 - 11:55 pm

Things must be really slow in Lemont, Illinois.

Dr Jekyll   September 27th, 2007 - 12:36 am

Nomination: “Not My Job” award

Bill   September 27th, 2007 - 12:48 am

I love how serious the reporter was, as if this was real news. I agree with Mr Hyde, things must be really slow there.

Come on people, lighten up. The kids weren’t upset by the racoon being striped (this time by paint) they probably were laughing their tail off, oh wait, that was the other animal in the story.

Mr Hyde   September 27th, 2007 - 12:49 am

I thought the same thing, “not my job.”

Shark   September 27th, 2007 - 12:55 am

A dumb story… Very old “theme”…

Pog Mahone   September 27th, 2007 - 3:25 am

Where are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton NOW, when they’re really needed?!? This is SERIOUS!

A Citizen   September 27th, 2007 - 5:07 am

Slow news day? Remember people, we are at war. I give this a big, “WHO CARES?” But, thanks for making me laugh. Glad to see life isn’t bad in Il.

Uncle Jessie   September 27th, 2007 - 6:20 am

Agreed, who cares? This is petty.

Besides, when you are on the back of a striping truck, you can’t see something like this on the roadway until it is right there.

I’m sure some dumb liberal will now try to pass some sort of legislation on this….

Bigg   September 27th, 2007 - 6:22 am

Do these people really have a life? If they want to prevent this atrocity from ever happening again, they need to conduct a funeral as soon as the breathing stops.

Jeff Davis   September 27th, 2007 - 6:23 am

This is silly, I wasted my time watching that.

Larry   September 27th, 2007 - 10:56 am

They should put flowers near the spot and hold a vigil. After all, raccoons are people too ! Aren’t they ?

Charles   September 27th, 2007 - 11:17 am

Nothing new… we live in a “USA Of the offended.” Everyone is out to find something to moan and complain about to get it into the news or whatever. Beleive we have other serious things going on in the country then a dead raccoon. Get real people!!

John   September 27th, 2007 - 11:23 am

This same thing happened to a squashed opossum in Georgia. We had a great laugh upon seeing the picture in the paper.

Charles   September 27th, 2007 - 12:28 pm

While I have little sympathy for the offended in this case, this is typical of how government workers in Illinois do their job. If they can’t be bothered to paint a line down the road correctly, imagine what else they can’t be bothered to do!

Andy   September 27th, 2007 - 2:50 pm

Who cares? I care, because this is hilarious! The teenager in me chuckles. How can these people be upset? Those types are always looking for something to complain about I guess.

Joe in W.Des Moines, IA   September 27th, 2007 - 3:19 pm

Well, that is 1 minute and 7 seconds of my life completely wasted. I should have known, shame on me.

MYRON SLABAUGH   September 27th, 2007 - 3:27 pm

Petty.
‘Not my job’ Why didn’t the bloaks take the body and bury it before the paint job occured. Who is lazy?
Which of the complainers would want to pay more for the paint job to have the painters remove road kill?

Walt   September 27th, 2007 - 3:29 pm

Dead snake, dead turtle, dead squirrel, whats next dead bugs. Breaking news…….
Oh, the stupidity runs deep!

Jack Kerouwack   September 27th, 2007 - 3:34 pm

Somebody tell Drudge this never woulda happened if there had been some surveillance cameras keeping an eye on the racoon.

Howard   September 27th, 2007 - 3:40 pm

Shucks–At first, I thought they were talking about Rev Jessie or Brother Al. Now that would have been good news.

Brent   September 27th, 2007 - 3:42 pm

who cares! people are offended by anything and everything.

[...] It amazes me how lazy some people can be.  [...]

Sheriff Bullock   September 27th, 2007 - 3:49 pm

What a dumb story. The citizens are acting as if the road crew killed and maimed the animals themselves…and NO it is not the job of the line painters at the Dept of Transportation to pick up road kill. If the citizens saw these dead animals days before why didn’t they call the city to have them removed or grow some civic pride and move the animals off to the side on their own?

Ben   September 27th, 2007 - 4:23 pm

Well, its good to note as the first lady did, that the dead racoon was lying there dead. I would hate to think of the poor dead racoon lying there alive.

What a waste of time this report was.

GarB   September 27th, 2007 - 4:28 pm

Give me a break! This is news?

fred   September 27th, 2007 - 4:33 pm

BFD.. some ran over a tree rat in front of my house and I didn’t wait for someone else to clean it up. a black plastic bag and gloves do just fine….

Doug   September 27th, 2007 - 4:36 pm

It looks like the women complaining are all overweight Yankee slobs who probably sit on their couch, watch Springer all day, and wait for their welfare checks to arrive. They sit on their porch and complain about a dead animal on the road for 2 days, as if it is the governments job to wipe their @$$ or something. Sure, we pay people to do this, but when they aren’t around, will it hurt these lard butts to kick the animal to the side of the road when they go to get their welfare check out of the mailbox???

Liberals have now officially ruined the country. Thanks a lot.

Dick   September 27th, 2007 - 4:43 pm

This picture has been circulating on the WEB for years!

Dave   September 27th, 2007 - 4:52 pm

In my best Mr. Burns voice: “Deploy the cowcatcher”

Just a Question   September 27th, 2007 - 5:07 pm

I’m waiting for people and journalists to get just as exercised over the way unborn babies are treated as they are exercised over roadkill. WBBM ought to be ashamed at this drivel.

Jesus Christ   September 27th, 2007 - 5:12 pm

You have got to be kidding me.

phillip terry   September 27th, 2007 - 5:31 pm

I doubt if the state line painting workers have in their job description, ‘picking up dead road kill’. Why didnt one of the folks who saw this animal in the middle of their street get on their lazy duff and pick it up and dispose of it. It not always someone elses job!!!

phillip terry
pensacola florida

Chris A.   September 27th, 2007 - 5:36 pm

I am from the MidWest and I’m ashamed of those people. Those Liberal freaks from IL. are not a representation of the true MidWestern folk that are able to take things into their own hands and get the job done. God Bless American and NO MORE AL GORE!!!!!

Bill   September 27th, 2007 - 5:43 pm

Hey you dumb LIB reporter GET A LIFE!

Chuck   September 27th, 2007 - 5:48 pm

Typical union work.

Michael A. Davis   September 27th, 2007 - 5:48 pm

I have to tell ya that I laughed at this news article! And where did they find the 3 women? Wowzers…..

The way I see it, the critters weren’t fast enough in life to get racing stripes, so the paint crew gave’em racing stripes so they’ll be fast enough in the afterlife!

Robko   September 27th, 2007 - 5:49 pm

LOL. Looks like the reporter is doing his best ‘Stone Phillips’ impression. He looked very serious and has very important hair.

Oh, the outrage the residents must feel! The road crew was lazy? If they thought it was so tragic, why didn’t they pick up the coon? Did they pull these ladies away from the Springer show for this interview? LOL.

TG   September 27th, 2007 - 5:58 pm

Can’t think of what is more stupid, me actually watching this “news” item or the station pretending it is news!! Of course they are going to paint over a dead animal, especially if it doesn’t get out of the way in time. This is Illinois folks!! It’s how it works!! Tabloid garbage.

bigd   September 27th, 2007 - 6:04 pm

Breaking news, the reporter, Mike Puccinelli’s father has just committed suicide after realizing that he wasted half his life saving to put his loser son through journalism school for this piece of thrash. For those intellectuals so concerned about the racoons feelings, the preceding was a joke.

TexasTwister   September 27th, 2007 - 6:11 pm

Senate Bill 346:
Henceforth the Department of Transportation workers will cease and desist from painting white or yellow (double or single) lines across any rabbit, squirrel, possum, toad, raccoon or any other form of roadkill. It is permissable, however, to paint a broken or dashed line across the dead animal’s path providing that the DOT truck adjust its speed and direction to assure said dead animal rests between and only between the painted line.

Estimated budgeted funding for these adjustments: $2,360,000

Mauricio   September 27th, 2007 - 6:13 pm

Mebe they didn’t see it??

Bart   September 27th, 2007 - 6:48 pm

It’s George Bush’s fault!

Dano   September 27th, 2007 - 6:49 pm

PETA Where are you!! I think there should be an immediate lawsuit filed against the state for at least a 100 million billion dollars! The driver who ran over this innocent raccoon should be tracked down and locked up for 5-10 years for violating this raccoons civil rights!! The road crew should be suspended without pay and made to undergo sensitivity training!! Those poor children who had to see that raccoon laying in the road should be provided with grief counselors for their trouble!! A monument of a giant raccoon should be erected with a dedication made by the president to commemorate this awful event in American history!!

Jimbo   September 27th, 2007 - 7:12 pm

Geez, hey – who cares? It might be important if the ‘coon was tortured, then painted, but he looks pretty laid-back there in the middle of the road. Besides, ‘coons have no pride, they eat out of garbage cans and their only predator is a moving car.

Art Stone   September 27th, 2007 - 7:13 pm

So is their complaint that the stripe now has a blemish, or that a dead animal got painted (Hint: the dead animal didn’t care). And people wonder where the next Geraldo is going to come from…

Jack   September 27th, 2007 - 7:16 pm

This is nothing. Here in Pennsylvania they asphalted over half a dead deer by the side of the road. Really.

ed   September 27th, 2007 - 7:19 pm

Give me a break..How many of these hypocrites complaining pick up road kill when they are driving?

Stephan   September 27th, 2007 - 7:23 pm

Wahhhh! Dead raccoon was painted over wahhhhhh. Go wash your pussy, you pansies.

Billy Jackson   September 27th, 2007 - 7:51 pm

I work for a large painting company and all most all road painting is subcontracted. Therefore, I could give 2 poops how many animals I paint over. Your right it’s not my job, just like it’s not the old fat lady’s job or hilery clinton’s job. I’m not lazy, I’m just not paid to pick up road kill. As they say in the industry “that’s an extra”

mike yukon   September 27th, 2007 - 8:16 pm

The Lemont CSI team needs to be dispatched to check if the paint on the raccoon matches the paint on the road. What if somebody planted the raccoon after the stripes were painted?

Steve T.   September 27th, 2007 - 8:46 pm

The real tragedy of this story is that Richard Daley’s police departmant wasn’t there to ticket the raccoon for illegal parking. For Shame!

lonewolf   September 27th, 2007 - 8:51 pm

This tragedy is a direct result of Global Warming!!

gorndog   September 27th, 2007 - 9:21 pm

If safety is the issue here .. then yes, they should not stripe over roadkill. But these guys are paid to paint lines, not pick up roadkill.

If the residents are simply concerned about carelessness about a dead animal — then they are just as much to blame for not clearing the road themselves as the stripers are.

Steve   September 27th, 2007 - 9:43 pm

To think, someone actually got so worked up over this matter that they’d call a news station to report on it. Those people got pretty worked up over a petty matter. I wonder what would happen if the reported reported on a serious issue. Would the interviewed people have the same zeal to complain about significant topics?

James   September 27th, 2007 - 10:29 pm

Just another ring on the raccoon.

Ray   September 27th, 2007 - 10:56 pm

you people are all so insensitive. i’m sure the raccoon had relatives living in the area. maybe a mom or dad, or kids. the highways should all be closed any place a poor creature might cross. they don’t have cell phones. so they can’t call 911 in an emergency. and i assume getting squashed would be an emergency.

stox   September 27th, 2007 - 11:31 pm

One word description – NON-STORY!

Mike   September 27th, 2007 - 11:39 pm

So Rocky the Raccoon got another stripe on it’s tail. Why should anyone care for crying out loud! Ugh!

Bucky Warner   September 27th, 2007 - 11:45 pm

Does anybody have a life anymore? Is there even one journalist in the world who knows how to establish priorities? Where is Geraldo when you really need him?

Jed Clampett   September 27th, 2007 - 11:48 pm

The same people complaining about the government employees not picking up a dead animal before painting over it also want a government employee providing their health care. Go figure…..

Tex   September 27th, 2007 - 11:48 pm

Will someone please publish the time and place for the candlelight vigil. I’ll bring some garbage for the family to munch on during the festivities.

Joe   September 28th, 2007 - 12:15 am

Are you sure this wasn’t a comedy sketch?

welaughatyou   September 28th, 2007 - 1:31 am

who cares? this is dumb – it was a dead rodent – what should they have done?

a. stop and call someone to pick up the dead thing and waste county money
b. stop and throw the dead thing to the side and waste county money.
c. do their damn job and waste less money than a or b?

Just a waste of time and money to report on this crap!

it might be news worthy if it was a winning lottery ticket…

Jimbo   September 28th, 2007 - 2:25 am

Those people complaining are L-O-S-E-R-S!

M. Fitz   September 28th, 2007 - 2:25 am

Yellow stripes across the dead, indeed.

I believe real and true news programs can show both types of news, that of what is really happening overseas, and that of an animal being run over by a government Transportation truck. The two situations are not mutually exclusive. Given our tax dollars pay for our airwaves to be allocated to these news bozos, therein lies the issue. I want to see more than one type of photo supplied to these “news” stations.

Meanspirited&h8filled   September 28th, 2007 - 2:50 am

“Oh, the humanity!”

Ol Stewball   September 28th, 2007 - 3:43 am

It’s only obvious that the Raccoon in question is a “liberal” as it can clearly be seen to be wearing a “mask”…And the road crew should be commended for getting that “yellow streak” down the middle of its back…exactly where it belongs.

MATTHEW ROSE   September 28th, 2007 - 5:21 am

Conceptual art piece by the Department of Public Works?

Sam   September 28th, 2007 - 8:14 am

Silly yankees, it’s just on the hide and no problem at all after you skin that sucker out to put it in the stewpot.

Kathy   September 28th, 2007 - 8:31 am

Give me a break!!! We kill some 4000 plus LIVE babies tearing them apart them from the womb or stabbing them in the back of the skull while the baby is kicking and squirming and people are outraged by this? Wake up!

kevin   September 28th, 2007 - 8:37 am

I though it was a update on the jena 6 story. They will be a few storys of dead coons in LA soon

Brian   September 28th, 2007 - 9:19 am

Those women should have waddled over there and fought over picking up the poor victims body themselves… From the looks of them, they could use a little extra exercise!

Alan   September 28th, 2007 - 9:29 am

I think it’s pretty hilarious. It’s amazing what kind of PC world we live in where THIS is outrageous.

Raleigh   September 28th, 2007 - 9:36 am

Trains once had cowcatchers on the front. Ooooh the poor cow! Oh the horror! Paint trucks should have critter dozers to fling flattened roadkill out of the way.

Seriously … paint trucks back up traffic even though they move along at a constant although slow pace. If they stopped for every raccoon, snake, squirrel or weed that might get paint on it there would be road rage where paint crews might join the road kill.

Abzul   September 28th, 2007 - 9:45 am

ummmm…Racoon Road…yaaaaaaa (Homer)

Creed   September 28th, 2007 - 9:54 am

IT’S ART, PEOPLE! JUST ANOTHER ‘CRAP AS ART’ STORY.

Kathy   September 28th, 2007 - 10:01 am

That’s 4000 plus babies A DAY, mind you.
Sinful man is worshipping the creature and not the CREATOR.

John   September 28th, 2007 - 10:35 am

What idiots making a big deal out of this, the reporter and the residents both. Peaceful monks getting shot in Myanmar is a tragedy. Dead raccoons getting painted over is funny.

Brewman   September 28th, 2007 - 10:44 am

Give the each Mom a shovel and put them to work.

Andrew P   September 28th, 2007 - 10:48 am

There is nothing new about this. I saw a better one 6 years ago, that had the caption “Not My Job”. Hey, they just paint lines. They are not paid to remove roadkill. It is not in their union contract.

Jack   September 28th, 2007 - 11:03 am

Actually this Raccoon was being slow cooked in the sun. The ladies main complaint was that the paint made it inedible.

Doesn't Matter   September 28th, 2007 - 11:20 am

And this just in… A dead cat has been spotted along the same stretch of road about 3/4 of a mile away from where the now infamous Raccoon Violation took place and… wait… This is SHOCKING! A police car just drove riht on past the dearly depoarted feline’s corpse without so much as even slowing down in respect! Oh, the humanity!

PS…did the furry little vermin get a state-funded funeral….and Purple Heart…..and 21 gun salute?
