Wondering Administrator   February 26th, 2008 - 6:00 pm

While recognizing any administrator would want to be cognizant and protective of campus safety, I would certainly hope there is more to the story than a student wearing a crucifix and another student wearing a rosary. The act of wearing religious artifacts has been a protected right of students and staff over time and over court systems. I would assume that the administration took into consideration specific student actions by these two students which would lead them to conclude that the artifacts were gang-related. Otherwise, you have, in effect banned the wearing of religious symbols and where does this stop? I would hope we would never become a France who banned yarmalkas and hijabs being worn by their Jewish and Muslim students. I did find the participation of the ACLU to be rather ironic as so many of their past actions has been to restrict rather than broaden religious practices within the confines of a pubilc school.

Let’s just hope gang members don’t start carrying books.

The administrator should have told him to put it inside his t-shirt.

I live in a very nice upper income town. Many of boys here wear crosses.

Strange.

One less religious symbol the better. Let them wear an image of Richard Dawkins around their necks, that’s something to believe in.

Imagine any teacher attempting to discipline a kid if they wore a star of David.
It would never happen anywhere at any time and if a teacher did attempt it, there would be lots of speeches about ant-Semitism & the teacher would be promptly fired and may spend time in jail.

Good point Dave.
Get rid of those Religious Symbols!
Replace them with BLING!
Problem solved!
