He is 81 years old. He struggled with words throughout the telethon this year. There were several times where he had to pick a different word because he wasn’t able to say the word he tried at first. This and this alone would earn him a pass.

Then, one might note that not only did he have a few mental misfiring this year, but he isn’t in the best of physical condition either. He’s doing better than he was, but he is still 81 and he has or has had back issues, prostate cancer, diabetes, pulmonary fibrosis, and he’s had two heart attacks. This gets him a pass. (And let us note that despite all the health issues that he has had, he isn’t raising money for a cause that might help him-he’s stuck with the MDA telethon!)

Name an actor who would allow himself to be on TV in the condition that he was in a few years ago, all bloated and the like from his meds? Frankly, he looked like a bloated caricature of himself, and yet Jerry came on TV anyway because he cares about this cause. For that matter, other than a guest appearance on Law and Order SVU last season (which was after his appearance returned to normal for a man of his age), I can’t think of anything else he’s done. Why does he put himself through this? It ain’t for personal gain-his reputation is solid and if he was just doing this to look good, he could have stopped doing it 30 yeas ago. No, he’s out there because he cares about “his kids,” and trying to find a cure for MD. For that reason too, he gets a pass.

Now, I listened to this clip about 7 times, and frankly, it sounds to me as if he was saying illiterate fat or fatty or something of that nature, not the F word that others seem to have heard. Even if he did use the F word, however, yeah, he gets a pass. He’s elderly, prone to word issues, and he’s out there trying to do good for others anyway. Leave the man alone.

So the guy dedicates his life to raising millions and millions and millions of dollars to find a cure for a disease that affects people of all races, religions and sexual orientations, but we’re supposed to get outraged and up and arms because he may have uttered a slur, said in jest to his cameraman, during the 18th hour of a telethon that set new records for fund-raising to beat MD?

A few years ago I called the telethon to complain because I observed Lewis point at a male dancer and mouth the word “faggot” while grinning into the camera. It occured at the end of a dance number when the dancers were all surrounding Lewis. The operator who answered the phone told me, “Im sure he was just joking.” I told them I didnt care if it was a joke, and I thought it was inappropriate. Anyone who thinks he doesnt use that kind of language need only look at his past telethons.

He did say; “… the illiterate fag…”

But who cares, But for those of that are offended, remember. Fag Fridays happens every Friday night at the legendary Endup in San Francisco.

Much earlier in the telethon, Jerry let it fly toward “a couple of Jewish doctors,” “Ramadan,” and some other choice insults. Ed McMahon and him dug at each other throughout the entire event. They were half-funny and half-old-guy-cranky. It was like a classic Vegas roast for these very “old school” comedians. Don’t tune into to Jerry these days if you don’t like it. Jerry’s still got more heart toward his fellow man than most of us.

I am a gay man, happily married to my partner for 26 years and am extremely religious (God is love and that is all he cares about). I recall when Hurricaine Katrina stole the spotlight from the MDA telethon one year. That could not be helped it was a tragedy overlapping a tragedy. Gays and gay supporters are trying to turn a comment into a ‘tragedy’ too, in attempts to steal the spotlight from Jerry’s kids and Jerry’s enormously important efforts. I completely respect gays and am completely a supporter of gay marriage if is one’s will. If the gays/supporters would just remove the chips from their shoulders, they would consequently remove themselves from the so-called ‘minority’ list that they keep putting themselves on and they would thus blend in with the rest of us just fine. Every race and every person should be proud of what he/she is and STOP being so sensitive.

Yeah, Jerry was definitely out of line, no excuses. But try staying up for 24 hours nonstop to run this show. I know he has help, but his flub no doubt came out from overexhaustion. It’s a long telethon. And, being no spring chicken, he was probably a little delerious from sleep deprivation. He also put up with lots of “minority” call when he was younger about being jewish. If you think he slandered others, he’s been slandered a lot, too. No biggie. We’ll give him a break.

You know what I think of gays? I think they’re a precious resource in our society. I am hetero, but I feel that THEY’RE the ones who are going to contribute to helping control the horrific overpopulation problem. I value them as sacred beings. Instead of procreating, they will adopt, etc. I value gays a LOT for that reason alone. Sometimes they can be a selfish lot, though, as in not being able to overlook the little quip Jerry made on TV. So we all have things society doesn’t consider perfect, but that’s what makes us all unique. It’s how we handle being different that makes us special. Please don’t make more of this than you should-try to take it at face value, and realize, that I”m a single mom, I support gays and gay rights, gay marriage, and much that gays stand for. I do NOT put gay rights above kids with MD or people with ALS, or above animal rights, or wildlife conservation–these are very vulnerable innocent beings that are harmed or need more attention that any gay could. Just think, Jerry’s kids don’t do anything to get where they are, they don’t engage in any risky behavior to be vulnerable to the circumstances they are put in. That’s why we MUST understand that it’s COMPLETELY unfair and VERY important for us to put them all first. This goes for MD and ALS. I was baptised a catholic. And I renounced my religion because Catholic churches do not accept gays or acknowledge that animals have souls. God loves every person. I believe he loves gays as much as he loves heterosexuals. I don’t think he will forgive anyone who abuses animals, children, elderly, or who murders, or doesn’t put Jerry’s kids first and foremost and his ALS pals, too.

You know why you guys (gays) are so upset? Because you haven’t lost someone you loved to this disease, otherwise your sexual-preferenced insecurities would have slid by the wayside immediately. Jerry was politically incorrect, and he’s not the only one helping, there’s 7-11, tall trees of lebanon, Harley -Davidson, etc., but Jerry’s the one who brings it all together and puts in on National TV for all to see, and consequently, for all to help. Over a year too late, but after reading these comments, goddamn. Moronic gay rights groups that bitch about the smallest of offenses DO NOT represent gays as a group, you morons. I’m gay and I wasn’t offended by what Jerry Lewis said. So get a brain and stop acting as if all gays threw a hissy fit over the incident. Only loudmouthed attention whores raised a fuss over this.

I didn’t watch the whole show but everytime I turned back to it he was really making some crude remarks. Just when the show started he started with two sex related jokes. HIs language was terrible. He sounded like a dirty horny old man. I quit watching it.

Jerry Lewis was once very funny. He no longer is. His choice of language on live TV was so wrong…and he did this more than once. He forgot what he was doing, lost his place, and embarassed his crew. Probably his family as well. I was embarassed watching him. He does sound like a dirty old man and this is a shame because he brought so much joy and laughter to so many people. BUT…it’s time for him to get someone else to host the show while he still has an ounce of dignity left.
