Yes,
Huckabee has fallen for the rope a dope trick.
The cancer forum frauds and clowns are at it again.
I want to know know many lives the cancer forum has saved from cancer, i mean direct contribution to saving cancer patients, not someone’s else effort, time and energy.
DebbieAugust 28th, 2007 - 5:15 pm
I can be just as radical as the next person. Along with the ban on smoking how about a ban on the government taxing those smokes.
I also want to see a nation wide public ban on overweight cows, bars, aids infected people and all illegal aliens. Where is my representation????
[...] I am dismayed by comments Huckabee recently when asked about imposing a cigarette [...]
josephAugust 28th, 2007 - 6:40 pm
I liked huckabee, but I am no fan of government telling us what we can and cannot do.Oh well he lost my vote.Oh and im a non-smoker !!!
bill phillipsAugust 28th, 2007 - 7:00 pm
I might start smoking again…. I hate people that want to change the world… Call me ignorant if you want but I do not want some one telling me how i should live…. I hope i get cancer and i wont take all your drugs you try to push I wont take part in your chemo treatments….I’ll just smoke butts until I rot away and laugh in the face of death….as my loved ones wipe their tears…..
not that i would have voted for him…but now i know i won’t.
bAugust 28th, 2007 - 9:15 pm
he lost my vote on this one – too many ramifications of this kind of orwellian collective, “we know better than you” – rightttttt…. where does it end? when someone wants to ban his right to freely associate with those who pray in public like him? jfc, man!
As an American and a non smoker, I have been insulted by the government telling bar owners they can’t let their patrons smoke. If I don’t want to go to a bar with smoking, that is my choice. I have been insulted by Mayor “nanny “Bloomberg screwing up restaurant menus. If I want to eat tasty fries, thats my choice. If I don’t want a presidential nanny, thats my choice, too. Just when I was starting to look at Mr. Huckabee seriously, (since his second place finish), He has convinced me he does not want my vote.
colanut22August 28th, 2007 - 9:41 pm
No thanks, Mr. Huckabee! We do not need you to tell us if we can smoke, breathe, sleep or eat the foods we want. We need less rule and regulation from the federal government, not more. Sorry, Mr. Huckabee, you will not be the Rep. presidential candidate. One president from Arkansas is more than enough.
Martin, Austin TXAugust 28th, 2007 - 9:46 pm
Huckabee is a smooth talker but I really don’t trust him to be a conservative president. He panders to voters and I think he panders to conservatives when he can. As a conservative, I find his rhetoric often is premised on liberal principles which I reject. I don’t think we need another GW who is mostly interested in making nice with the Dems.
RandyAugust 28th, 2007 - 9:53 pm
Zero votes, minus 10,000 votes, is still just zero…
But at least he stood for “something”, in the end…
Smokers “suck”… So a little “reminder” of just how much so many hate you smokers ;-0
josephAugust 28th, 2007 - 10:28 pm
Smokers are citizens too and whether you like it or not have the same rights and also vote just like you ..Liberals like some on this comments section cheer for more government. While i am not a smoker ,I recognize the slippery slope this creates and want to stop it before big governemnt eventually finds something i like and then decides its bad for me and bans it..Say no to closet liberal conservatives.
DanAugust 28th, 2007 - 10:47 pm
Just what America needs another know it all politician to tell us how to run our lives. I knew I would never vote for Clinton, now I can add Huckabee to the list. Bloomberg, Clinton, Huckabee…mu God there is no end to politicians willing to tell us how to live our lives.. To hell with them all.
joeAugust 28th, 2007 - 11:05 pm
Stop legislating behaviour!! smoking is legal you are collecting billions in taxes on it!! clubs and bars are closing you liars..fight crime not donuts..Huckabee is a loser!! stay out of my kitchen and snacks !!
its not your money!!!
There are 40 million smokers in the US. Maybe it’s time for them to get organized and vote these clowns out of office.
LauraAugust 29th, 2007 - 1:42 am
Great!! Now, how about a national ban on perfume, cologne, body spray, etc. wearering in public places? Did you know these are not regulated by the FDA or other governmental agency and are protected by trade secret laws? Or how about just taking the toxic choices/products away altogether?
JimAugust 29th, 2007 - 2:24 am
The US government has no more jurisdiction over smoking within the 50 States than it does over spitting on the sidewalks. Mr. H. obviously does not understand the responsibilities of the office he is seeking. Neither does the reporter asking the question.
ChrisAugust 29th, 2007 - 3:09 am
I have mixed feelings on this issue.
On one hand, it makes me furious to see politicians say that they know what’s best for us & think it is proper to have the government tell rational adults what to do….especially in a semi-”free” country like America. Isn’t the U.S. supposed to be based on a federal system, where the States can decide for themselves which way to go on most issues, or is that something that is confined to the history books? Are we now living in an age where everything in our lives must be decided from Washington, D.C.?
But on the other hand, I have no sympathy for nicotine addicts whatsoever (I used to be one, but am not anymore thank God!). Let THEM suffer the consequences of having their drug use made illegal, just like those of us who enjoy smoking marijuana have to deal with. Heck, we can’t even smoke marijuana in the privacy of our own homes, let alone do so in public….so why should the tobacco addicts whine & complain if public cigarette smoking was made illegal? Since pot smokers such as yours truly have to deal with losing their jobs due to drug testing, I wouldn’t shed a tear if tobacco smokers faced the same fate re: urine tests that I do.
Actually, I would prefer to have the government butt out & LEAVE US ALONE, regardless of what we smoke; but that’s a different issue altogether.
FRANKAugust 29th, 2007 - 8:22 am
HE JUST COST HIMSELF HIS CHANCE TO WIN ANYTHING. QUIT SCREWING WITH PEOPLE, EVERYBODY IS GETTING TIRED OF PEOPLE THAT START THAT STUFF JUST WANT TO BAN EVERYTHING AND MESS WITH EVERYBODIES LIFE. NO CANDYBARS NEXT. GET OUT OF PEOPLES LIVES ABOUT ALL THIS NONSENSE. I WANT SO CALLED POLITICIANS BANNED!
There are only two choices:
we can have a free society or a smoke-free society. It’s one or the other.
RustyAugust 29th, 2007 - 1:54 pm
Your right to smoke stops at my nose. I don’t understand conservatives who call this a civil rights issue. Protecting me from a known carcinogen in public places is a primary function of government.
James BoulderAugust 29th, 2007 - 5:54 pm
Huckabee didn’t say you can’t smoke. But he is right to say that the federal government has the right and should regulate the safety of work places. I am just glad that he is not for singling out smokers, but rather helping workers in all fields to have a safe place to work. I think you folks should pay a little more attention to the whole premise and less on the headline.
Well, Rusty, keep your nose out of places where smoking is (or should be) allowed, like smoke shops, cigar bars, smokers-only bars and pubs, etc., and you’ll be ok. There’s not one good reason why smokers cannot have their own places to hang out.
smcAugust 29th, 2007 - 10:18 pm
From the looks of these comments you’d think we lived in some 3rd world country. Yeah, we really have it bad folks. You all are belly aching at the idea of a politicain pushing a law at banning public smoking while our military men and women are putting their lives on the line this very moment. I don’t care if you agree with them being over there or not. And for the wonderful appreciative patrons who think these men and women are not preserving your right to complain about the idea of not smoking in public areas, you need to wake up. Chris, you almost brought me to tears, that is tears of laughter. I mean you actually carried this kind of downtrodden tone to your comment on not being able to smoke pot.
MarkAugust 29th, 2007 - 10:28 pm
Wow. Great. I support him on this. Great job Huckabee!
Jeff TAugust 29th, 2007 - 10:40 pm
Silly people.
News flash. Smoking bans are very popular with the majority of the culture (across ALL party lines). Just search for polls on this. Huckabee will get many more votes than he will lose.
People who oppose bans seem to post about it vociferously online creating the illusion that that “many” people can’t stand smoking bans. But get offline and out into the real world and the vast majority people love them. (This isn’t 1964.)
BTW, don’t sully the word freedom by linking it with the ability to smoke indoors at work or inside public places. If that’s what freedom is to you, than I say we can afford to lose that one.
There are always people of limited intelligence, (like Jeff T above) who are eager to give up other people’s freedom.
If something is popular, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s any good. (see hip hop for example). The truth is that the majority of people are not exceptionally brilliant. If they were, we wouldn’t need congress, we could just take a vote on everything. This is also known as “democracy” (aka. mob rule).
We have elected officials who are supposed to be smarter than average, capable of making unpopular decisions and protecting the minority.
Smokers are taxpayers, in fact they pay a lot more taxes than non-smokers, so they deserve to be represented and treated with respect.
Of course these days no one with a spine would run for office, so our politicians do nothing but enforce mob rule. Anything goes as long as it buys votes.
It’s a profoundly corrupt system that allows the excessive taxation of a minority group, and don’t even provide them with a place to smoke their overprice cigarettes.
Don’t panic, I can still smoke in my office, and I’m not going to hire any non-smokers, so I’m ok, no worries.

Who will the nannyist go after next when they realize that people can die from lung cancer even though they never smoked? Perhaps the nannyists will ban sex because people die of AIDS?
There are many people, my father was one and opera singer Beverly Sills another, who died from lung cancer yet never smoked unfortunately many people believe that lung cancer victims deserve to die because of their nasty habits. I have to ask how the National Cancer Society can live with the fact that they say smoking causes lung cancer yet having personally seen various people die from lung cancer yet these same people hated smokers. My question is how many people who smoked were not going to die from lung cancer anyway?
Karma means that all those whinning about the nasty habit of smokers may themselves end up dying from lung cancer.

Rusty: “Your right to smoke stops at my nose.”
I can understand why one might think this follows logically from natural law, but it simply isn’t true. Or, at least, if it were true then civilization wouldn’t be possible. Every physical interaction with our environment has effects that extend outside of our personal space and touch those around us. For example, when driving a car I emit toxic substances into the air that others breathe in. Does that mean I am violating their rights? What about the statistical risk that everyone lives with having airplanes flying overhead. Since a wing could theoretically fall off at any time, is it unconscionable for that plane to be in the air? Whenever I sneeze, I put viruses into the air that could potentially kill someone with a weak immune system, am I a criminal?
To put it simply, you have no right to be free of the annoyance or statistical risk imposed by others. Anything less that direct physical damage needs to be examined and weighted by a civil jury for you to have any claim of redress. Since the dangers of second hand cigarette smoke are on the same scale as car exhaust, furnaces, pesticides and a million other daily annoyances, it is plainly wrong to persecute the smokers in our society.
Huckabee is using all his personal experiences and making them a national issue…is this selfish or what? Once again 10 points for Ron Paul and negative 10 points for Huckabee.
