Well, I think ther is plenty of “blame” to go around here. After all isn’t that what this is all about? Placing blame instead of accepting responsibility?

In my (correct) opinion, the officer is border-line abussive. What happens if we speak to an officer of the law like that? Then at the end of the clip he shoves the kid back to the pavement. Overly aggressive. The clip made a point to mention the number of years the officer has on the job. As if there is a majical number where all police officers become perfect.

Now for the mon and kid. Once again, in my (correct) opinion this all falls back on the mom. When asked if she would accept the officer’s apology she says no. Is it any wonder why the kid has no respect for authority. Interesting that the kid’s father is not in the picture either. So what the mom has just taught the kid is, “Don’t worry little son, I will always be there to get you out of trouble and you are not in any way responsible for your actions.” Stupid mom.

Boo Booth   February 13th, 2008 - 10:22 am

Years from now when that punk is out of control and the same officer rescues her from him, she still won’t see the light. This is how kids go bad, by being defended by intimidated parents. Sit means sit, and he would not have had to be pushed back on the ground if he was taught to obey and respect the law.

Davido   February 13th, 2008 - 10:42 am

The officer was trying to do his duty. The punk was not obeying. There was no respect for the law. Where is the boy going to learn respect; not from his mother. Dad is out of the picture.
This is our future guys, no respect!

SoCal Patriot   February 13th, 2008 - 10:55 am

This officer law behaved exactly as how he has been trained. No laws broken, free vacation, and back on the job in a week.

Nothing to see here, move along…

Kathy - Arizona   February 13th, 2008 - 12:01 pm

Full support to the officer. Shame on the Parent(s?) for 1) failing to teach her son any respect for the law and authority and 2) for completely ignoring the fact that her son was breaking the law and 3) for endorsing his bad behavior.

Why did the officer push the kid back down? Because he apparently thought he could just do what ever he wanted and get up on his own after the officer already sat him down once. Every night on “Cops” reruns you can see what happens when a crime suspect decides he isn’t going to comply with an officer’s request to sit, kneel or assume the position.

Mommy Dearest, why don’t you apologize to the officer for raising such a disrespectful son and then try teaching him a little respect for adults and authority. This is probably one of those moms who think there was nothing wrong with their child disrespectfully zooming through the store on their “wheelies” while mom’s attention is captivated by the latest crap on sale.

I have a 14 year old nephew that I love to death, but he is also disrespectful to adults and authority. Sometimes he pushes my buttons so badly it takes everything ounce of self control I have not to physically tear into him. His parents are either oblivious most of the time, or simply take the less confrontational road and ignore the behavior. Interstingly enough, he behaves differently between my home and theirs, mostly because I don’t allow it and they do. Kids aren’t stupid, they know what they can and can’t get away with based on the adults in their lives.

Brad   February 13th, 2008 - 12:10 pm

Good for the cop! He has about ten little worthless punks skateboarding where it is illegal and the cop put the little bed wetter in his place! We needs more cops like this guy who aren’t scared to discipline this lazy generation! Where is the Dad? Why is the Mom defending her sons lawlessness? I bet she wants money from the city. Another arguement for the draft! Yes, I am a Veteran….If the officer gets suspended, I’ll start a fundraiser for him so he won’t miss out on any pay.

MaximusDelta   February 13th, 2008 - 12:14 pm

Let’s see the whole video.
I believe these innocent little children (smirch) would have listened to the police officer.
If we see the whole video the little darlin’s it will show oth sides of the story.
Where is the kids dad? Oh, not in the picture huh?
They look like little hoodlums and gangsta want to bee’s with their gay hats that are to big for them.

Ben   February 13th, 2008 - 12:16 pm

Just another cop going too far. The kid was skating where it is not allowed. Fine, you can arrest him for that, but screaming like baby because the kid called him ‘Dude’? Exactly what law states that you cannot call a cop ‘dude’? Swearing at cops is illegal (though I have beef with that, too), but that didn’t happen. If that cop loses his mind after being called ‘dude’, which is legal, how is he going to react in an actual high-pressure situation? Furthermore, you cannot scream respect into children. It has to be earned. I have none for this swine. The police are not here to instill morals. They are not here to raise the town’s children as they see fit. They are here to uphold laws and assist in emergencies. I am sure this child did not gain much respect for the police that day.

RufusLeeKing   February 13th, 2008 - 12:19 pm

Mark my words. You stick another officer in that heckler-encouraging GoofyMobile and there will be more carnage.

5bm5   February 13th, 2008 - 12:22 pm

Hey moderator whats the problem? Do you just censor anti socialist comments or anti liberal comments? Your credibility is goin out the window!

Robert Jones   February 13th, 2008 - 12:24 pm

When a police officer says to sit down, you sit down. It’s pretty obvious that this kid has had very little discipline in his life. That’s one of the problems with so many children growing up in our society without active fathers. The sad thing is, he learned a terrible lesson from this… no consequences to his bad behavior.

And, Sorros, I don’t think the officer “should loose(sic) his badge”, and calling him a racist with absolutely no evidence to support it is irresponsible.

democrats R traitors   February 13th, 2008 - 12:30 pm

Ali   February 13th, 2008 - 12:58 pm

Haha I have a new drinking game for everyone here – take a shot every time you see the words ’stupid kids’ and two shots for every time you see the word ‘punk’. I guarantee you’ll be on your butt before you’re halfway through the comments.
How many of you have teenage kids on this list? My guess is few to none, considering the way you talk about them. Officers get respect when they give respect, which is how we all get it. This guy was out of line and he snapped on a group of people younger and smaller than him, and he ought to start controlling his temper. This wouldn’t happen to a group of adult men outside a bar, now, would it? It isn’t because the adults show him more respect, but because he’d have his arse handed to him, and he knows it.
You treat a person like crap, no matter their age, and you’re going to get crap thrown right back at you, period.
And as an aside, nobody uses the word ‘punk’ in common vernacular anymore, folks. Get a new adjective please ^_^

This Cop should get a raise. The kid is a little punk who needs a good dressing-down. Mommy (and Daddy?) need to teach little punk boy some manners.

Kipple   February 13th, 2008 - 1:28 pm

The cop is a pansy. He should a smacked that kid around, give him a real lesson and take him in. As soon as the cop is gone those kids will just laugh about it, just like they are laughing at you for saying it was the kid’s fault. Those “kids” are dealing drugs and tagging grafitti, no question about it. What part of illegal don’t they understand, They were skating illegal. Someone does one thing illegal with no respect, they do a lot of things illegal. I’m not talking about mistakes, anybody can make a mistake. I’m talking about willfull flauting of the law, showing disrespect for authority. And the cop just lets them slide. He should either man up or be fired.

A Cop   February 13th, 2008 - 2:23 pm

If you can’t handle your emotions when dealing with a few punk kids you need to resign or put your fat ass behind a desk. Cops already have a bad enough stigma, THIS GUY HAS PERSONAL PROBLEMS

Can’t have a child himself so he’s angry at the world

Marty   February 13th, 2008 - 3:05 pm

I can beleive you people are siding with this fat pig cop on this one.

That guy was a complete jerk, and was abusing his power.

The reason the kid had no respect for that guy is because he had no respect for the kids and their simple ability to ride their skateboard. He never once mentioned where they could go skate in a safe place, or how to get there. He just started ripping into them.

Respect is earned not given.

NoGuff   February 13th, 2008 - 3:24 pm

The officer:
He was right but did go overboard regarding the skateboarding. And I know it wasn’t the skateboarding that he went overboard about, but rather the attitudes he was shown. They didn’t hurt anyone. All he needed to do was stop them and tell them to go away and not come back. Usually if you stand in the best spot they stop and want to go elsewhere.

The kid:
He should learn to respect the law and police officers, and grow the hell up. If he’s told he’s not supposed to be somewhere, especially by a police officer, he damn well better move on. He has NO moral high ground here.

The mother:
She should not cottle her son like that. And by taking her son’s side in the manner she did, she’s only teaching him not to respect authority and the police. He’ll have the idea there are no rule or consequences and that he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. She’s raising a punk.

This kid and his mother are what’s wrong with this country these days.

if they’re breaking the law arrest them, ticket them, or warn them; then, move on? obviously this guy wanted his day to become more exciting.

i’m sure a normal conversation would have gone a lot further for everyone in this video rather than any kind of force.

25 years ago when I was a kid, I was perfectly polite and decent, and would literally be walking down the street minding my own business and get treated this way on a regular basis by cops. It’s pretty much par for the course.

It’s nice all of you back up the cop, but I can tell you first hand, there are a lot of cops on the street who should have retired years ago. They just don’t have the mentality for it. They either get a power trip from the job from the start, or just get tired of dealing with dirtbags all the time, so they treat everyone they meet like they are dealing with Charlie Manson.

You get back what you put out, if you start out with an attitude and are disrespectful of the people you are supposedly “serving”, then you have to expect to get it back. I wouldn’t respect anyone who treated me that way.

I’ve also dealt with a few police that were really decent and professional. But they make up the minority in most cities.

Maybe he’d like to try treating me that way off duty. We could have a little discussion about mutual respect. He might scare punk kids, but not me. The only thing he has going for him is the badge. And if you can’t control your temper any better than that with some kids, then you’ve got no business carrying a gun for the city. Get your head screwed on straight, or get another job!

libsukbad   February 13th, 2008 - 4:59 pm

What was wrong with that?, the stupid mother should be thankful that someone was trying to keep the little snot in line like she apparently is unable or unwilling to do. Probably a single mom, and I could see why dad left the high maintenance beeotch, society just loves single moms today. If she is also a lesbian she will cash in big time. She will be the same woman hysterically crying why officers weren’t around when some Baltimore gang-bangers get a hold of that little snot.

The true victim here? Our nation and the principles it was founded on. The true criminal here? The mother for abrogating her duties as a parent, and anyone who shows the least bit of sympathy for her and her son. The “brain-dead” punk son is just an unwitting puppet dancing at the end of his irresponsible mother’s strings. The tragic hero? The brave officer, for just trying to raise the punks IQ.

what a joke   February 13th, 2008 - 5:50 pm

I see nothing wrong with the officer’s attitude. I’d be willing to bet he had the option to take the skateboard as it was used in the perpetration of a crime (i.e. riding it in an area where it is illegal to do so); and should have exercised that right. That little punk will continue on his path of becoming a low-life scum-bag, led by his completely white trash mom and no-show dad. Unfortunately, the way our society has twisted the beliefs of the ignorant (i.e. the super-majority of democrat voters) this woman will get her claim to fame and probably successfully sue this officer and the city and retire rich and on meth. Its a shame to think this officer will be punished for doing what we all should be doing EVERY time we see skateboarders and punks out destroying the property WE, not they, pay taxes on with out hard earned money. And if they decide to jump you, as this type of group is apt to do, use appropriate force in response. DO NOT do as the weak, chicken-krap individuals in this other breitbart story did:

http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=24164&comments=1

I’m waiting for the “revolution” when people start standing up for themselves, against tyranny of low-lifes, and the tyranny of corrupt authority (of which this cop was not a part).

SORROS   February 13th, 2008 - 5:55 pm

Now that we have read the posts of all the cops co workers and friends. when is it appropriate to push a kid down, or man hanled a 14 year old, just because he speaks in slang. that is assault and he should loose his badge.
He threw the kid kid kid down then pushed him down again. This is the same guy who woiuld slap around black kids for being black. Power hungry and abuse of authority is all it is. He thinks with his badge and his gun he can assult and threaten people, he is a disgrace to the uniform.
and lastly loose some wieght will ya.

Andrew   February 13th, 2008 - 6:29 pm

I used to skateboard for years at that age, and called everyone dude – including the cops. And many times they showed up and gave us hell.

Did I turn out bad? Today im 29 and a very successfull IT pro and have no problems w/ the law.

I think the cop overreacted, what’s wrong w/ being called dude? Regardless, it’s no excuse for physically assaulting the kid and yelling at him. He was not at all professional in how he handled the situation.

Funny how all these cops get paid leave…

Nik   February 13th, 2008 - 7:20 pm

I was originally going to go on a rant but decided against it.
All I have to say is we don’t know what led up to this confrontation, as the other kids video camera wasn’t filming then. Most likely because before he started filming they were doing something seriously wrong to get that rise out of the Officer.

TomBrooklyn   February 13th, 2008 - 8:03 pm

The officer didn’t handle his anger very well, but he didn’t get too out of line. He was dispensing a little street discipline, but that is not acceptable these days. He could have been calmer and just ticketed or arrested the kid, but is that what the mother would have preferred?

The officer here is showing serious signs of abusive behavior. He should definitely be taken out of service and a full psychological evaluation performed on him.

Perhaps he is under some type of stress that he is unable to deal with that can be corrected. But until then, he is an obvious danger to the community and should not be carrying weapons especially around children. What is really disturbing is that this officer’s problems were not detected by the department until this happened. Police departments have a great responsibility to the community to insure that its officers are fully fit for duty while on the street. They also must actively monitor their officers for signs of trouble.

Reyn Mansson   February 13th, 2008 - 9:16 pm

I’m a parent of two skating teens and I have seen this sort of abusive behavior by law enforcement officers here in Texas too. I support the mother, apology is not enough, getting him fired is. This is NOT a unique situation and is indicative of the prejudicial treatment that skaters face all the time. The officer probably did NOT deserve respect. That the officer didn’t like “Dude” & “Man” and was UNABLE to handle that is reason enough to be dismissed as unfit for public service.
I want my kids to question any order and make their own rational decisions. I do not automatically obey an officer if I am stopped. I have to give certain information by law and beyond that I will not comment – i.e.: Where are you going? Do you know how fast you where going?

To address a couple of points from the antiSK8 fascists – confiscation of the skateboards is not a part of any skate prohibitions – the actual offense you will be sited with is trespass and that will be under an ordinance that allows property owners in your jurisdiction to prohibit certain activities. In most situations trespass is a ticket.
If it’s public property and skating isn’t allowed then that needs to be changed.

Maximusdelta   February 13th, 2008 - 9:58 pm

It’s about respect. Respect is not just earned or given. It is taught. Taught by parents. Children learn what they see; primarily because they’re not listening anyway. There is a close quarters of fear and respect. Children today are not taught to fear; they have little to no idea of what a consequence is. Fear is not always a bad thing; that little feeling you get in your stomach, you call butterflies, should have been a clue these little momma’s boys.

How to avoid being harrassed by the police.

1) Don’t break the law.
2) Comply with the requests.
3) When told not to call him Dude or Man, SHUT MOUTH. Yes SIR / No SIR is always a good response to authority.
4) A little respect can go a long way!!! And keep you from looking stupid to half the world.

Russ B   February 13th, 2008 - 11:48 pm

Just another example of the media coming down on cops with a one sided video and going overboard in the process….

This kid didn’t get an ounce of treatment he didn’t deserve or ask for. Lets not forget that the cop was taking action because the kids were BREAKING THE LAW. “I was scared” No you were an idiot and don’t have any respect.

I feel bad for this cop and what it will do to his career…

Brian   February 13th, 2008 - 11:52 pm

The officer was a little abusive… but ultimately the kids were breaking the law. They were disrespectful. They were basically being like every other retard kid out there.

I side with the cop. The mother should be ashamed of herself and her obvious lack of parenting skills. If she knew where her child was and what he was doing, she wouldn’t find herself on TV.

She’s so horrified and offended… PUH-LEASE. I’m sure the litte darling is the class valedictorian and perfectly respectful around the house. He was just snatched up by a bad cop, right? SURE. The kid has delinquent written all over him and now he’s hiding behind his mommy.

Props to the cops for dealing with these people every single day.

Scott K   February 14th, 2008 - 12:14 am

The kid was probably smarting off. The mother has probably spoiled her kid, who can do no wrong. When i was growing up if an adult were to tell my mom I was misbehaving, she would tend to believe the adult. What happened prior to the start of the video? That part is missing. when he becomes an adult, at some point, mom won’t be able to bail precious out when he gets in trouble. The kid needs a belt to his bottom, that’s what he needs. Probably never had that. So does the kid making the recording.

JD   February 14th, 2008 - 12:36 am

Teens may often be punks — as is possible here — but it’s not really relevant. The police are not parents. That officer had no right to lay hands on that boy without cause, especially with the force displayed in the video. If a crime was committed then the officer had only two choices, subject the boy to due process based on the particular crime being committed or let him off with a verbal warning.

The mother was right to not want to accept an apology because it would obviously be phony. The only reason an apology is even mentioned is because he got caught, not because he regrets any actions. If not for the video no one would’ve believed it happened yet many who’ve had even minor encounters with police will have run up against similar attitudes and it’s not some sort of secret hate of authority, the police themselves have instilled it in us.

JD   February 14th, 2008 - 12:42 am

You mean losers, loser. I skated as a kid, it’s a sport requiring athleticism and skilll; it encourages outdoor activities and gregarious behavior. I’d take that over a son sitting home all day playing video games and never going out or interacting with his friends except over voice comm. Lastly, it’s not a good idea to get into real life comparisons but I’m betting that, despite my years as a skateboarder, anyone comparing my comments and yours will determine mine is in fact bigger than yours, loser.

James   February 14th, 2008 - 1:20 am

Did we get to hear from the police officer? Of course not. What did these kids do and say that was offensive? The police officer didn’t appear to be that brutal. I’m sure these kids are not innocent! Is there a place for skate boarders? And if so, why weren’t the kids using this area?

Stephen   February 14th, 2008 - 9:12 am

Skateboarders almost never take police seriously.

You don’t call a cop “dude” or man when they give you orders. You’re supposed to respect them and do what they say..

I cannot believe that we are at this point where grown adults are outraged over this cop talking some sense into these kids. Cocky little sh***.

Gee, I wonder why nobody wants to be a cop anymore, because if you act like a role model and don’t let kids disrespect you, then the parents are going to call Al Sharpton or someone to blow everything completely out of proportion.

The policeman lost control. Saying “dude” to a police officer is not a crime. The boy obeyed the officer, but then called him dude. So it was not that the boy did not obey the officer, it was that he called the officer “dude” That was when the officer lost contol. Then he continues to provoke the boy, even when he was sitting there quitely. The officer has serious mental problems…as most officers do. I know, lived with a real good one for my life growing up…my dad. Know all about the good ole boys club. They all have serious anger issues. Serious. This sicko officer needs anger managemnt court ordered! Wake up people who defend this rotten donut eating officer…it will be you next for holding your cell phone wrong. 1984.

The kid should have listened to the officer , but the office should NOT have behaved so badly. I certainly hope this poor excuse for a cop is fired. There is NO excuse for any cop to behave that way.

They should cut those punk kids legs off. That will show them. Kids should grow up, get fat drink beer and play soft ball. Fat and dumb Thats a good ol American for yah!
I cannot believe kids would not want to get yelled at by a coach, smack each others bottoms or take wholeome manly group showers in the lockers. What wimps with there silly free thinking.

To Paul,

The “offense” was not worthy of cutting the kids legg off, you must be from the middle east. Go home you sick kid hater…Or you could become a cop but i doubt you would pass the mental evaluation…then again, Riviaerie’s department might be hiring!
