You have to understand how incompetent Oklahoma police officers are to see the reason why these things happen. Police always check their “backstop” before they fire, or at least they are supposed to. If there is potential for injuring the public you don’t take the shot. That way ‘freak’ accidents never occur.

This is horribly tragic. My prayers go out to their family. Also, to that policeman, he has made a absolutely god awful mistake. I hope that this is a lesson to local law enforcement to have ways of dealing with snakes better than shooting them with a pistol. AT LEAST, GET A BIG STICK, GET A BAG, & PUT THE SNAKE IN IT! Jeesh!

This is a horrible freak accident, and i’m so sorry for the family. But you have to understand – the cops’ lives were on the line and they had to shoot the snake. It’s just not worth the risk of an officer being bitten; and if a general citizen occasionally dies, that’s acceptable collateral damage.

Stand tall brother officers, you did the right thing!!!

These poisonous flying snakes need to be eradicated from this planet, an officer shouldn’t have to ever back off to terrorist treats from a snake. You have to understand how hard it is to hit a snake in mid-flight and at the same time worry that some kid fishing without a license might get in the way. The officer properly reacted the way he was trained to and should not have to face consequences even if the snake was on the endanger species list

Breitbart, your title is wrong: This is not a “freak” accident. At worst it appears to be negligent homicide; at best a tragic mistake. A police officer is a person who is in the profession of arms, who is trained constantly on the carry, employment, and safety of firearms, and who should always serve as a model of gun safety. I was taught as an 8-year-old never to fire a gun at water. Why? Because bullets will skip off water like a stone off a street. Not all the facts are presented here, but it appears one officer’s reckless eagerness to employ his weapon has carelessly ended an innocent life and ruined many, many more.

There seem to be problems with this story. For instance, if the cop really shot a snake, wasn’t the snake on the ground? Shouldn’t his gun have been pointed (and the bullet trajectory) also towards the ground?? Knowing cops the way I do, I suspect the snake story was contrived after the fact to cover for severe negligence and cops just “goofing” around like little boys. It would be interesting to know if the dead snake was ever produced! If any citizen had made the same juvenile mistake, he would be facing charges. I hope a trained professional – on the public payroll to protect and defend the citizenry – faces at least the same charges. Tragic – yes, but these cops cannot continue to think they’re above the law even to the point of civilian homicide.

Why blame the officers don’t people get it! their job is to protect us, I’m sure they were out hunting down a bad guy or terrorists and stumbled across a venomous snake left by one trying to cover his tracks. The collateral damage is a small price to pay to keep us safe and protected and one day if we listen and have faith our beloved christian President we will all be free from terrorism so we can safely send our kids out to fish, camp and play.
Long Live our leader George W Bush !!! May God protect you always
