"The other night we had on Cliff May. He was on, we were discussing torture, back and forth, very spirited discussion, very enjoyable. And I may have mentioned during the discussion we were having that Harry Truman was a war criminal. And right after saying it, I thought to myself that was dumb. And it was dumb. Stupid in fact."

Jon, please read your history, and recognize the REAL “war criminals.” “Give-em-hell Harry” was one of the BEST presidents this country ever had.

Watch the interview here:

http://www.blackfive.net/main/2009/04/cliff-may-kicks-jon-stewarts-ass.html

Cliff May showed the audience what an idiot this guy is. Absolutely hammered him. And got him to say that Truman was a war criminal.

Priceless!

LK   May 1st, 2009 - 2:29 pm

I may have mentioned during the discussion we were having that Harry Truman was a war criminal — MAY HAVE? Come on John, be honest with yourself and start with — I SAID!

Ain’t it funny how Liberals can’t manage to deal with the TRUTH??

Drano   May 1st, 2009 - 2:39 pm

He apologized to keep his job, not because he thinks he was wrong. Typical Hollywood leftist air-head.

JGibbons   May 1st, 2009 - 2:49 pm

Stewart’s comments take away from the liberal argument that only Republican’s are war criminals. Do you ever notice how the Left always blames America for bombing Japan but not Truman who was a Democrat?! Every Liberal thinks using the A-bomb to end WWII was a war crime, even Stewart. Cliff May brilliantly tricked Stewart into an honest answer that hurts the liberal arguments of today and now you see Stewart backing off. Go Figure…

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 2:54 pm

Here, I will lay out what happened and why

1) Leftist Stewart has no morals but bases his statements on relativistic concepts. Specifically, if you were a republican or a conservative you deserve to be bashed.

2) So, in Stewarts small leftist brain, he could not remember that Truman was a Democrat. So here he is doing his typical leftist mindless drooling, thinking if Truman did something military he must be a Republican so he feels free to call Truman a war criminal.

3) Democrats, also being relativistic putzes with no morals reminds Stewart that it is a big no no to call a Democrat a war criminal in public because well, it wont sell well in politics if conservatives say even Jon Stewart calls a Democrat president a war criminal.

4) Stewart, realizing his party affiliation checklist error quickly and happily apologizes for his Truman error.

5) Stewart, now in leftist recovery spin mode starts to point out that well, dropping a nuke bomb is a difficult decisions for any president (especially a Democrat) to make, and must be reviewed thoughtfully, etc, blah blah blah.

doogle   May 1st, 2009 - 2:55 pm

Besides “I’m sorry”…you should also be saying “Thank you” to Truman.

If it hadn’t been for Truman, you might’ve been saying “Arigato” to Hirohito.

Or maybe even, “Sayonara” to free speech altogether.

Eileen for Freedom/Liberty   May 1st, 2009 - 2:59 pm

America…what is wrong with these Democratzi?

Have they lost their minds? Under their conditions we should go back and investigate every President that ever served…doesn’t set a good precedent for future Presidents either!

If he knew right after it came out of his mouth, why didn’t he immediately retract it?

Instead it got a laugh…and that is his main job to make people laugh…not be an expert on the policies of past, present or future Presidents!

So don’t try and be the voice of America liberals…bubba…do your job and entertain!

====================

JUST ANOTHER PATHETIC DAY IN THE “REIGN OF BARRY HUSSEIN” AND HIS LIBERAL COMEDIC RELIEF MSM!

TxTeaParty   May 1st, 2009 - 3:10 pm

Truman was a DEMOCRAT so now he is “not” a war criminal.
DEMOCRATS good.
REPUBLICANS bad.

That is all it boils down to.

john   May 1st, 2009 - 3:13 pm

Jon can’t make up any more shit about Bush, and his audience is sick of his adulation of obama’s swagga….

You’re really digging deep there boy…

mary rose schiavone   May 1st, 2009 - 3:14 pm

What a jerk this guy is. And what’s with the laughter at at this moron’s slightest wording. Stewart starts out that he said something that shouldn’t have been said, and his audience is rolling in the aisles. He says his comment was dumb, and they laugh. He continues with that it was dumb, and they laugh.

What’s up with these liberals? Are they so immoral and so totally devoid of judgment that all they can do comfortably is laugh?

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 3:21 pm

Stewert did not apologise to keep his job…what absolute RUBBISH.
Stewert says all kinds of toilet humor references, posts “CLUSTERF*CK To The White House”,
think some online portion of his discussion which wasn’t aired on the show threatened his job…on Comedy Central?….seriously that is dumb for EVEN HERE.

Jim Treacher   May 1st, 2009 - 3:42 pm

It’s a start. Maybe now he can ponder whether pouring water on the face of the guy who planned 9/11 in order to prevent another attack is more of a war crime than nuking hundreds of thousands of people to end a war.

Dwight   May 1st, 2009 - 3:44 pm

Give Stewart credit for a rare showing of class (and yes, it hurts me to type that out).

Now that he’s admitted that there were hypocritical gaps in his logic reasoning regarding interrogations, I can only hope that he’ll revisit the debate and work through his own inconsistencies.

It isn’t fair that he called Truman a war criminal to “win” (*cough*) a debate when he was pinned down by superior logic, and then recant when Mr. May was gone.

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 3:45 pm

Since Stewarts audience is leftist and since Truman was a Democrat then yes, logically it makes sense that Stewart got heat from other leftists for thinking that Truman was a republican and had to withdraw his claim to save his job and his political view. mark of course will say otherwise because mark is a complete moron on every issue. So a person with brains should easily ignore marks leftist whining for what it is. Useless.

anon   May 1st, 2009 - 3:49 pm

Wow kmichaels, you sure love using the word “leftist” in your comments.

Like so many comments here and on hotair.com you’re very predictable with your labels: “socialist” “leftist” “demoCRAT” etc…

I guess you don’t know what time it is.

Absurd name calling, bizarre exaggerations of what events mean, mind-reading the opposition makes you out to be just like one of the crazies still whining about Obama’s birth certificate outside a teabag rally.

You’re shoveling dirt on the coffin of the GOP

mark   May 1st, 2009 - 4:51 pm

IF Stewerts audience was LEFTISTS from the 1930’sand 1940’s they might have different opinions about Truman…that ain’t Stewert’s audience, and NEVER WAS.Stewert’s audience was mainly born after 1980’s.

dr jay   May 1st, 2009 - 5:11 pm

glad he apologized, better than sending out a spokesperson to lie.

JB Whitlock   May 1st, 2009 - 5:23 pm

These two-bit twits like Stewart never cease to amaze. Their ignorance and their self-centered drivel speak volumes . And this is supposed to be “Prime Time TV”! Unfortunately, it may well be the best these morons can do for entertainment.

MDWhite   May 1st, 2009 - 5:33 pm

It never ceases to amaze me that morons like Stewart and so many others think that we simply bombed Japan just for the hell of it. Japan wa sengaged in a war of conquest throughout Asia for years before the snaek attack on Pearl Harbor. Ask any Chinese, Malaysian, Korean, Filipino, Thai, Burmese, or Solomon Islander who was live at the time if we committed a “war crime” by dropping the bomb on Japan. There answer would be a collective “No.” Simple fact: Japan was prepared to fight to the last man, woman and child if the Allies had been compelled to invade the Japanese home islands. Hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen would have died in the process. Stewart’s attitude is the smug, holier-than-thou idiocy of a generation that knows the price of everything and the cost of nothing. The war needed to end, the ball was in Japan’s court to surrender, they hemmed and hawed, and they paid for it. They weren’t the victims. the real victims were raped and butchered by the Japanese and buried in nameless graves from Nanking to New Guinea and from Singapore to Wake Island.

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 5:40 pm

mark, dumbarse, I am pretty sure that leftists come in lots of age groups and that Stewart is followed by old leftists too. mark, just because you are a 17 year old immature troll does not mean that all of Stewarts audience are as young and as stupid as you are. Not to mention the fact that the word of what Stewart said went well beyond his own show, you dimwitted twit. Bottom line, Stewart apologized because of his politics and his job. Not because of any morals that that moralless dweeb is supposed to have.

peter c   May 1st, 2009 - 5:48 pm

This sarcastic, mean spirited, lying creep could spend the next 6 months apologizing for the hate speach he has spit out against Palin,Bush,Cheney…the Catholic Church…the Boy Scouts,O’Reilly,Hannity, Fox News…and anyone who stands for traditional Christian values and still not have enough time.
He’s another so-called Reformed Jew who practices nothing really Jewish who thinks he’s above all others…except his real Messiah..Obama.
The only time I ever saw him act emotional was when he attacked the guy from CNN over his not seeing the economic wreck the Dems gave us…Why? Because Jon Boy lost money in it!

mark   May 1st, 2009 - 5:56 pm

kmichaels I’m 56yo
I’m hardly the usual Stewert audience. He has the highest ratings in the MOST sought after demographic 18-35yo.
That’s why he’s so popular, because he delivers YOUNGER audience, advertisers desperetly WANT.

Really icky anti semetism sh*t in your post. Like it’s YOUR duty to judge the Good Jews from the Bad Jews.
btw….neither of them give a sh*t what some goy named peter thingks.

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 6:03 pm

Like I said a long time ago mark, if it turned out that you were just young it would excuse your stupidity a little bit. I also pointed out that if it turns out that you were older it would prove that you were one of the biggest retards on earth. I guess you just proved that you are not young and naive but that biggest retard on earth. All that age with no wisdom just proves that you are an incredibly slow learner. You have yet to get any issue correct. You stand for some of the most sleazy arse backwards things possible and your choices continue to prove what kind of worthless troll you are. Your stupid idea that 35 year olds wont know that Truman was a democrat and your insistence that Stewarts news about calling Truman a war criminal does not get around to most leftists again is yet another sign of your serious mental retardation. But then, since you are so damn proud of your stupid choice of being gay it comes as no surprise that you would be proud of all the other retarded stances you take on every other issue.

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 6:42 pm

poor mark seems to be getting the worst of every debate. Most likely because he has the brains of a 3rd grader and the mindless hate of an extremist muslim. So much for the tolerant gay community. Nothing but a myth apparently. I love seeing the true colors of the idiot leftists shining through.

Here is a list of their common colors

1) hateful
2) misinformed
3) backwards thinking
4) intolerant
5) stupid

Oops   May 1st, 2009 - 6:48 pm

mike   May 1st, 2009 - 6:50 pm

You know, the words ‘liberal’, ’socialist’ and ‘leftist’ get tossed around here pretty casually. Have any of you ever been to a liberal blog? They say similar (opposite of course) things about you. From the middle, you all look the same, liberals AND conservatives. Spiteful. Bitter. Contemptible. Your every comment and quip is dripped in arrogant self-assuredness, drunk in the assertion that your and only your movement is right and just. You make me sick, both of you.

Nick   May 1st, 2009 - 6:52 pm

The Daily Idiot should be cancelled.

Matt   May 1st, 2009 - 6:59 pm

I can’t remember the document name, but there was a report created back in ‘44 that estimated casualties on both sides if the U.S. were to invade Japan. The death count was in the millions, include the majority of Japan’s population. Top that off with the fact the Russians were heading east to assault the islands as well to claim their “piece” and it was good in the long run that Japan remained Japan.

Stewart the moron seems to have never opened a history book or performed a single minute of research. Why would he? He’s a comic. His show is a comedy/fake news show, only the left has turned to him because their actual news networks are such a joke.

Finally, if Truman were in politics today, he’d be a republican.

Phil   May 1st, 2009 - 7:20 pm

After the retaking of the Marianas Islands in mid 1944, Japan was carpet bombed almost daily by B-29’s flown from Tinian. Regardless, their War Department had convinced the Emperor that surrender was not an option.

Carpet bombing was not discrimnate. It took out infrastructure yes, but it also took out civilians. Japan’s rulers did not care. About 100,000 people were killed in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Many more than that were killed in the carpet bombings.

I’m sure the whiners who want to rewrite history will say poor Japan. Yes, poor Japan who:
1. Conducted chemical and biological experiments on the Koreans, Chinese, and filipinos.
2. Were building two atomic bombs of their own, one in Korea and one in Hokkaido.
3. Slaughtered hundreds of thousands in concentration camps (yes, the Japanese had them too).

Jon, stop to get your facts straight before opening your mouth. You sound like Ahmedinejad….

Rio   May 1st, 2009 - 7:22 pm

Scoots   May 1st, 2009 - 7:27 pm

dr jay   May 1st, 2009 - 7:29 pm

Phil, right on. One of the reasons japan fears nth korea is that koreans have a right to be upset to the extreme. their women were forced into being pleasure slaves for the imperial forces(tens of thousands). the same soldiers that tossed the korean, filipino and chinese babies in the air to impale on their bayonets.

kmichaels   May 1st, 2009 - 7:41 pm

Yes, liberals call conservatives evil and conservatives call liberals evil. But conservatives just happen to be correct.

This reminds me of a gay straight debate on TV years ago. The straights correctly pointed out that the New Testament states that being gay is serious sin. The gay side then claimed that the scriptures also state that you should not call good evil and evil good, which is truly a scripture in the New Testament. The difference however is that the scriptures were talking about the gays calling being gay good when the scriptures also are very clear about being gay being a serious sin.

That is the difference. Liberals do indeed call conservatives evil and cons call liberals evil. But one side is truthful (conservatives) and the liberals are lying.

I call good good and evil evil.

Libs call evil good and good evil.

Debate all you want but it wont change the truth.

Liberals are ok with drilling holes in the brains of human babies and sucking out their brains.

I am correctly against this evil practice.

Libs call this practice acceptable.

I call that practice evil.

I am right, they are wrong. Sorry but the truth is bold and blunt and liberals dont get it, dont have it and dont seem to even want it. The truth that is.

https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-of-intelligence/csi-publications/books-and-monographs/the-final-months-of-the-war-with-japan-signals-intelligence-u-s-invasion-planning-and-the-a-bomb-decision/csi9810001.html#rtoc8

Excerpted from above:

Some scholars also have suggested that knowledge of the level of Japanese reinforcement efforts was reflected in a statement Truman described some years later as having been made by Marshall at Potsdam. In a 12 January 1953 letter responding to a query from an Air Force historian, the President noted that, after he had learned of the successful nuclear weapon test, he asked Marshall about casualties that would be incurred in carrying the planned invasions through to the Tokyo Plain. The published version of Truman’s letter states that Marshall told him it would cost “at a minimum one quarter of a million casualties and might cost as much as a million.”

A quarter of a million is roughly the level–220,000–that the Joint War Plans Committee, in its paper prepared for Truman’s 18 June meeting, had estimated would result if Japan’s surrender required seizing all of Kyushu plus the Tokyo Plain. As was noted earlier in this study, those figures, taking into account various scenarios and the duration of the operation for which the casualties were estimated, were consistent with estimates made at the same time by the staffs of MacArthur and Nimitz.

To many observers at the time, the quarter-million figure put forward in June by the Joint War Plans Committee could well have seemed intimidating. By comparison, the combined casualty figure for MacArthur’s campaign through the Philippines, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima was 133,000. For Normandy, from D-Day through 48 days of conflict, losses were 63,360. For the Battle of the Bulge they were 59,000. (64)

Nor should the evidence be construed as indicating that concern over casualties was the only factor exerting critical force on the A-bomb decision. What the evidence does indicate is that the view of the bomb as a potential way to end the war quickly–in the hope of (1) avoiding the need for an invasion with resulting casualties that by any standard would be of intimidating proportions, (2) minimizing the USSR’s postwar leverage, and (3) not having to confront debate over concessions on the terms of unconditional surrender–was the driving force in the minds of the US leadership team before Potsdam, and before the acquisition of intelligence showing much-larger-than-expected Japanese forces on Kyushu. Nonetheless, it is certainly plausible that the buildup disclosed by early August reinforced the belief that the decision to use the bomb was the path of least resistance.

His apology makes it sound like this just somehow slipped out by accident, that he realized his mistake as it was coming out of his mouth and regretted saying it instantly.

But that’s not what the clip of the interview shows at all. He was very slow and reflective in his answer, saying “yeah” a couple times in response. I think the ones trying to “reel it back in” as he said it was Comedy Central.

He didn’t regret what he said. He was “told” to regret what he said. His jokey apology showed no sincerity at all. I like John Stewart and The Daily Show for what it is. That’s why I hate to see him reduced to obvious pandering and BS-ing like that.

Makes him look like a politician. ~M

I don’t know who he’s directing his non-apology “apology” to, but in his moment of epiphany and self-reflection, he might also want to think about at least 50% of the other things he has said only for ratings or political favoritism and maybe have the guts to go out and argue his points on more neutral territory, rather than bait guests into his home and ridicule them. Stewart – the hypocrite too ashamed to even use his real birth name while criticizing others for being deceptive and untruthful – has gone so far beyond what he once criticized the CNN show Crossfire for. Anyway, the only people who can’t see through his agenda yet are his like-minded pseudo-intellectual warm-spittle bathing buddies in the audience, the vacuous droids in Janeane Garofalo’s Great Unwashed fanclub, and the self-engrossed on the Upper West Side of New York. Stewart/Liebowitz jumped the shark a long time ago, with his on-trick-pony double-takes. Only in America can you beat a novelty act into the ground over and over and over and over again and it still remains popular to some!
