I don’t know much about this protest…but on the surface it appears to be a legitimate request. Nursing homes cannot do what can be done in a persons own home, but then again that opens it up to alot of people taking advantage of people in need!

For example, I took over the care of my 90 yr old uncle when his wife passed, his only daughter passed and his only grandson passed.

He lived in another state, and I did the best I could while being out of state.

He had to go into the hospital to get a pacemaker and after that he went into a nursing home for 2 1/2 mons to recoup. In the meantime we went down and renovated his house for him. When I say renovate, I mean clean and paint and update him with handicap facilities in the bathroom, etc. so that when he came home it would be comfortable for him.

We then hired a women to come in 2-3 days a week to cook and clean for him. It didn’t work out and we came back into town and hired him someone to live in his house with him on a daily basis.

In 21 days that woman had complete control of him, tried to throw me off as power of attorney, etc. I got the state involved and the day before I came into town and was to meet with the State officials at his house to fire her with them there…she went to the bank with him.

She kept him in the car and went into the bank and said that he wanted them to take $10,000 out of his bank account and put it into a account in her name. The bank was savvy and didn’t do it.

The bank manager told me that the guy working outside on the grounds said she came out and was yelling at my uncle in the car…cussing at him to open the car up.

I felt so bad because here I had hired her so that he would be comfortable in his own home. We came in the next day and fired her and had to take him to the doctor that day because the doctor wanted to hospitalize him a week before when she took him to the doctor for a followup visit.

She was to be my eyes and ears for him…she never, ever told me the doctor wanted him in the hospital.

The day we took him…the doctor put him in the hospital immediately. He had developed a bed sore while at home while under her care and it just got worse from there…he never came home!

My uncle was a very self-sufficient man to a point. He had bowled until he was 89 and went and got his own groceries, etc. He was up every day and watched TV and never got a bed sore before.

I suspect that she was keeping him in bed all day and night. I called him one night at 5:30 pm and he was in bed. When I asked him why he didn’t get up and watch TV, he said he would just stay there. I think she scared him to death.

I will never forget this, and fear that this kind of abuse will happen if people are allowed to get care at home. It could be a disaster if not overseen by someone who cares.

So while I sympathize with the protestors, I fear for them also!

eileen, if you looked in to tom daschele’s plan for health care it involved major rationing for the very sick and very old. we may end with soylent green centers if there is no money left.
i am sorry about your personal experience. i have seen almost every elder scenario possible from wonderful to atrocious but as a general rule it is a lot more pleasant to pass your final months/years in a private home than a nursing home…especially a bad one.

Dear dr jay…I don’t know from our experience this was a nightmare for my uncle and for us.

She changed him immediately…he was not the same man even talking on the phone.

It was pathetic and terrible to be involved in…and we could not make any prosecution against her because we could prove nothing.

Her whole intent was to take over my uncle’s finances and kill him literally and slowly.

She was supposed to cook for him and when we came back to fire her…there were white styrofoam boxes with leftover sandwiches, pizza, etc.

She had worked for other older people before him, she was a Nurses Aid, and we felt confident.

Either way in the nursing home or at the mercy of a tyrant in their home…it can be dangerous.

The best thing is that there is someone nearby…who checks on them once or twice a week without the caretaker knowing they are coming.

Being out of state…and only 21 days…we could do neither…but we talked with him and her daily to see how things were going.

It is a helpless situation to be in…whether you are the family member or the senior citizen being taking care of.

God bless our elderly who can’t care for themselves, we will all be there one day.

Thank you for your comments…

When you are a slave to the state then this is what you must do. You elected this arrogant foolbama to lead you, to make amerika into a promise land of welfare and bread lines. You get what you deserve.

Eileen (Thanks for sharing)…. I know that fear. Even facilities with hard working, caring, dedicated employees. Are often still understaffed and underfinanced. And simply make do, as best they can. And some of those facilities will still strike fear in your heart.

I look to the skies and give Thanks, for the care a family member currently recieves [was a three year waiting list! (and still required some heavy lifting to make happen)].

Would have just killed me see her in a factory/warehouse (they do indeed exist). Is only going to get worse/the future’s so bright I need welding goggles.

Signed: have no answers
