Austria speaks German. The Austrian accent is easily recognized by other German-speaking people.
Most Americans have no idea where Austria or Austalia is. I think you’ll find that that’s the case for teenagers in general, around the world. While many Americans are indeed content with their ignorance, I think you’ll find that it goes along certain boundaries. Well-off and middle class people are well educated, poor people are not, and are content to be so, because they’ve got that welfare coming. But in the test results, no differentiation is made between the strata of society. In homogenous societies, like Japan, you don’t find that problem.

Obama doesn’t speak a second language (speaking of provincial fools) and certainly is prone to gaffes based on his obvious lack of knowledge.

Maybe, I’ve used a little bit too much “nuance” in stating Obama has a “lack of knowledge” and should have stuck with ignoramus. You know, the folks in New York are apt to use different “jargon” than the common slang in–say–California, where they would have just called him a doofus.

Only the stupidest people would think for a moment that Obama doesn’t (and didn’t) know that Austrians speak German. At worst it’s a gaffe; at best he meant it in the same way a person would say “I speak American”, i.e., Austrian German is different from Swiss German or German German in the same way that Australian, Canadian, English, Scottish, and American people all speak slightly different languages.

Incidentally, if you Google “speak American” you’ll get 182,000 links. This certainly does not reflect that the authors of those websites didn’t know that Americans speak English.

Again, anyone who actually believes Obama didn’t know that Austria is a German-speaking country is stupid. But I’m calling you out: most of you AREN’T stupid, you’re simply looking for some little tiny, inconsequential thing to point to.

Eileen for Freedom/Liberty: Thanks for sharing that film’s site. Just finished watching it. It puts some parts of the puzzle together that had, frankly, puzzled me for some time. To be specific: Why did Reagan and Bush, though somewhat conservative, insist on bankrupting this country? Also, why was Bush so dead set on going into Iraq? He’s a politician, he’d never have the backbone to do it “just because.” In the same way, mild Barry–why’s he rushing pell mell to tear up the very foundations of society on a daily basis? This is not the kind, gentle Barry we have seen portrayed. Again, he is a politician; he would not be acting so boldly if he wasn’t told to.
The black/white hatred, the democratic/republican hatred could very well be being used as a diversion. If you throw out a few honest Republicans, Imhofe, for one,and a Democrat like Kucinich, the rest of the parties are the same kind of people.

We’ll never know, of course, but I can’t believe you honestly think that if a reporter had asked Obama a month ago “Do you know what language most people in Austria speak?” he wouldn’t have known the answer. If you do believe this, then on what grounds? Certainly this video presents not even the slightest evidence to support that he would have gotten the answer wrong. As I said, at worst it’s a mere gaffe, while at best he was saying “speak Austrian” the way people say “speak American” even though they know that Americans speak English.

Me, I still dislike Obama’s budget AND his tax plan. Apparently some of his detractors are more bothered by their own imagined conclusions about what the least charitable interpretation would be concerning an utterly minor matter. Seriously, leaving aside the fact that there is no basis for the conclusion “he didn’t know what language they speak in Austria”– absolutely NOT on the basis of this video– I’m still perplexed that people think this is really an issue.

I think what it all comes down to is that my objection to Obama– and in general to big government, high taxes, and all that goes with it– is not in any way tied up with a need to make a mountain out of every mole hill that, looked at charitably, probably isn’t even a mole hill in the first place. Of course, if you begin with the premise that it’s important to discover that Obama doesn’t know things, then obviously you’re going to be more likely to interpret his remarks in the way you guys have. But what’s the point of that?
