Myth of 90 Percent: Only Small Fraction of Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.
Fox News Exclusive: You've heard this shocking "fact" before -- on TV and radio, in newspapers, on the Internet and from the highest politicians in the land: 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States. There's just one problem with the 90 percent "statistic" and it's a big one:
It's just not true.

Saul Alinsky Obama’s administration is just trying to manipulate the situation to their advantage.
Afterall, Rahm “fish head” Emanuel said not to pass up a good crisis…remember?
That is what they are doing taking advantage and lying and spinning that the guns the cartel in Mexico are using are coming from America and are American guns.
The truth will always come out!
They had hoped they could use this as an excuse to limit gun ownership in the US and sales of guns in the US.

I’ll try to use small words for you Eileen. I know you worship FOX as much as you do your Xian god, but neither are infallible. Oops, there goes one of those big words!
If a gun has the serial number removed it can’t be traced. Out of all the guns that Mexico seizes and sends back to us that can be traced, 90% come from us. Claiming that simply because someone filed off the serial number results in the gun not originating from the States is plain silly. I would argue that more than 90% come from us, there is more motivation to obscure the serial number from a gun here as we actually enforce gun laws.
FOX is filling your head with lies and conspiracies. The sky is not falling, President Obama will not take your guns.
This is yet another example of Republicans causing a problem, and then blaming Democrats for the mess. If the Late Great Reagan (may he continue to rot in Hades) had not started the failed war on drugs the black market would not be thriving in this country. Without the black market, drugs for guns would not exist.
Please seek out a professional psychiatrist. You obviously have a serious mental disorder.
Eileen pretty much strikes the same chord each time she posts. New to the boards?
Yet, always a nice touch to start your point with a bit of condescension. Way to swing opinions. Masterful in fact.
You assert what? Fox is not presenting the facts, yes? Well, do tell, what are they? Typically, liberals who have a problem with Fox, rarely question the facts, more often than not, they–like yourself–just go ad hominem on the network.
What conspiracies? Lies? Where is your crack central American reportage on the subject. Got a reporter’s name who can credibly refute this? No? Then shut up.
Mexico boarders the states, but has a number of ports where guns from China, Russia and points East can deliver their wares.
Like many Libs, you’ve dipped into the koolaid one too many times. MSNBC, the NY Times make a regular habit of misrepresenting facts or not reporting them at all. Check out the Acorn story for example. Even ultra liberal Conyers had to give that a nod. Don’t get me started on Global Warming. Yet, I’ve never seen you posting on these liberal canards. You’re not a hypocrite are you?
You don’t hate Fox because of their facts, you hate because their facts tarnish liberals and their sacred cows. Journalism is dead in America today. To deny that what passes in the media for news is biased heavily to the left, either means your so far left, even wacko liberal stuff seems right wing or you’re intellectually dishonest.
Let me use some of those “little words” for you. Don, you don’t know what you’re posting about.
DonApril 3rd, 2009 - 3:24 am
Ghandi’s Fist,
I’m anything but new to these boards. I have frequently advised Eileen of her mental disorder and urged her to seek help. I can’t even begin to list the lies and conspiracies she spouts on a regular basis. The month and a half or so she was AWOL after the elections were quite pleasant, if only she would leave for good the spam at this site would drop remarkably.
I’m not a liberal, I’m a gun-toting Independent. If you’d like to do some searching via Google, I’m sure you’ll find quite a few posts by me urging people to vote for a third party in protest of the pathetic choices we had this past election. That said, I do feel Obama was the lesser of two evils.
The guns coming in from China, Russia, and South America are typically military grade, and not a significant percentage of the gun violence. Grenades and AK-47’s are a drop in the bucket.
Your kool aid statement is highly offensive and disrespectful to the hundreds who were slaughtered in Jonestown.
You’re right, I don’t hate FOX because of their “facts”. I hate them for what it stands for: Fixated On Xianity. I hate the hypocrisy of their drug addicted, illegal alien hiring, poster boy Rush. I hate their censorship of anything that doesn’t fit their ideals.
There’s one thing we can agree on. Gore is as accurate on Global Warming as he was inventing the interwebs.
jophisApril 3rd, 2009 - 4:40 am
Don- you were joking about taking offense at the kool-aid statement because of Jonestown, right? It’s late, so maybe I’m just missing a bit of dry humor. The Gore/ “interwebs” comment was funny.
Fox is a lot more fair than the other news networks. They allow opposing points of view on just about every show and hosts usually don’t ridicule people they don’t agree with- well, maybe Hannity does, but he is easily cancelled out by Obberman and Matthews.
Anyway- what is the 90% number based on- did it come from Homeland Security? If it did come from the government it is surely BS. How do they know what the number is? The government is full of liars and they will release any number that will eventually help them get their precious ban on automatic weapons. I have heard 17% and with no proof either way, that sounds more plausible to me because even with our terrible border security, it would still be easier to get guns from the south than trucking them through Texas or Arizona. I do think that a TON of money crosses that border though.
the riflemanApril 3rd, 2009 - 6:24 am
Don : Your so called facts are absolutely LIES ,
A study by the national rifle assoc, showed that most 90% of the weapons were of RUSSIAN make ,being bought on the black market and being sent in from their (mexicos) southern borders.
sence rocket lauchers, granade lauchers rocket propeled are not sold by us to mexico (except to their military) ,how did theses thugs and murders get these weapons , TRY FARK,AND CORRUPT PEOPLE IN mexico .
Also i may suggest that you may say you are a gun owner but ,thats like biden saying he carries a glock ( not)
DaveApril 3rd, 2009 - 8:05 am
Facts mean nothing to the anti-self defense propagandists.
In fact,I don’t care and would consider it irrelevant if Mexico received 99% of their guns from the US.
The trend of gun confiscation attempts is gaining momentum, but the government will run into a very big wall when law abiding American’s are asked to surrender their weapons.

I’ll bet anything that the NRA
is behind this story!!!!!!
rock on b*****S
DonApril 3rd, 2009 - 11:57 am
Jophis,
It was late for me too, I should have put the Jonestown comment with Gore to make the sarcasm clear.
My numbers are backed by the related link to this video. The Mexican government does not send us every gun it seizes (I’m surprised they send us any), but they did send us 11k of the 29k they nabbed over 07/08. 6k could be traced, 90% were manufactured here.
The problem with people counting grenades and AK’s is that those seizures are generally in large numbers and not linked to individual crimes. While military grade weapons are being smuggled into Mexico, they are typically used by Cartels for large scale terrorism and not by the Average Jose criminal… they’re still using handguns.
When FOX allows opposing views they get their one sentence in, normally, “I disagree with you”, and then they are shouted down before being allowed to give a clear stance. You can’t honestly claim they allow them anywhere near equal time to make their case.
The Rifleman,
I’m a life-long deer hunter. I own a .308 which I use in brush, a .243 for the fields, and a SKS (bayonet and banana clip included) when I feel like having fun at the range. I do not own a handgun. I live in a small home and prefer my knives and baseball bat for home protection.
No Democrat will ever take your guns, short of fully automatics, and let’s be honest… nobody uses a fully automatic rifle for anything other than sport or crime.
JustAnotherGuyApril 3rd, 2009 - 4:44 pm
I smell Soros and Raum behind this whole pile of BS. Expect another on of these to hit as soon as this story fades.
MattApril 3rd, 2009 - 7:22 pm
The Dems lie? Nooooo. Only Repubs lie. Pelosi “we’re going to be bipartisan on every bill”, harry “the war is lost”, Murtha “they’re all a bunch of murderers”, Frank “There’s nothing wrong with Fannie Mae” would never ever lie.
Baa haa haa haa haa haa.

America…look…please I am becoming more and more disturbed by some of the comments that I have been reading on the blogs.
We are all upset about what is happening in our country and now what is happening abroad during this European trip.
But it is never, ever appropriate or right to get to the point of going overboard.
We need to unite together as Americans to fight…but that does not mean literally.
That means peacefully…in order…in mass…and united in one cause to get our point across about how we as, American citizens, feel.
On April 15th…Americans will join together to make our voices heard…please join us at these peaceful events to share our feelings in mass.
Violence in any form and especially in a reactionary mode is unacceptable in America or anywhere else.
The last couple of days we have seen several shootings around our country from deranged and depressed individuals.
That was unacceptable and it tore American lives apart by taking away innocent people who had nothing to do with these individuals who took their lives.
America…when individuals rise up on their own and do despicable acts of violence it just “reinforces†the point of the government that Americans cannot be trusted with guns.
That is not we what, as Americans, want! We don’t want to provoke the government to come in and take over the right to protect yourself.
But, America, these are the “operative†words here…â€protect†and “defendâ€! Not assault and attack.
The great Constitution of our nation calls for the “right to bear arms†for protection and defense. It did not say you have the “right to bear arms†to assault or attack a fellow citizen.
Two very different intents.
Please consider my thoughts and consider the result of any action you may take. I have always been taught, and taught my children, there are consequences to every thing you do…so think carefully about what you do and count the cost.
That has helped in so many situations throughout my life and I know it has been the same for you!
Please…think before reacting violently in any way in any situation.

GOD BLESS AMERICA THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE…MAY OUR CHRISTIAN GOD HEAL OUR LAND AND HEAL OUR PEOPLE…MAY WE BE UNITED IN PEACE AND LOVE…TOGETHER WORKING FOR THE BENEFIT OF EACH OTHER IN PEACE. AMEN

The idiots in the AP who publish these bogus statistics are the same people who don’t know the difference between automatic firearms and semi-automatic firearms. Many perfectly legal hunting rifles and shotguns are semi-automatic. That is, each shot requires one separate trigger pull. Fully automatic weapons, like the military weapons favored by the Mexican drug cartels, can fire multiple successive rounds with just one application of the trigger. A machine gun is a fully automatic weapon. An auto loading shotgun is semi-automatic. One is a military weapon. The other is used to hunt ducks. Can you tell which is which?
To own or possess a fully automatic weapon in the United States, you must have a highly-regulated Federal Firearms License (FFL). Most automatic weapons which find their way into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels have not come from the United States. They are highly regulated and cannot be sold in the US except to Federal Firearms licensees. You cannot go down to you local gun retailer and buy an M-60 machine gun, a fully automatic Uzi or the darling of the AP, an automatic AK-47.
Gun control advocates like to seize on these bogus statistics to advance their agendas. Organizations like the AP continue to publish phony articles describing the US as the source for Mexico’s automatic weapons because these bogus stories sell news copy. Meanwhile, law-abiding Americans are caught in the rhetorical cross-fire of lies from the gun control left.
Patrick MApril 15th, 2009 - 5:22 pm
re: Patrick C-
You are right about some things, but way off base on NFA weapons. (machine guns) Before the gun control act of 1968, anyone could own any weapon they chose. Since the machine gun ban of 1986, no new fully automatic weapons were allowed to be purchased. That means the only ones left in this country are the ones grandfathered in and the ones owned by law enforcement. As with any rare commodity, they cost a fortune. Any law abiding citizen with a couple grand is able to purchase one. They need to fill out the Form 4, pay a $200 tax to the government, have the forms approved and signed by the local police, then wait 2-6 months for the government to add them to the National Firearms Registry. (yes, there is one of them) Then the law abiding citizen can take delivery of his automatic weapon. If it is stolen or missing, the owner is on big trouble. It cannot even be taken across state lines without filling out a 5320.20 form- submitted to the government. So yes, almost anyone can own an automatic weapon with permission from the local, state, and federal governments.
An FFL on the other hand is simply the license to sell basic (not automatic) firearms in the US. An FFL holder typically has a gunshop and has to keep meticulous records available for government inspection anytime day or night. The FFL holder can be jailed for paperwork errors or fraudulent gun sales.
Saul Alinsky Obama’s administration is just trying to manipulate the situation to their advantage.
Afterall, Rahm “fish head” Emanuel said not to pass up a good crisis…remember?
