Science, not ideology, will guide the administration. What a breath of fresh air! At last we can do some real research without the input from the uneducated being an overriding consideration.

CAN THIS MAN EVER FUNCTION WITHOUT A TELEPROMPTER????????
Far Right Wing WackoMarch 9th, 2009 - 1:01 pm
Halleluiah! At last we start to turn back the “Shrub Regime” ideological craziness and move forward with the full support of folks like Nancy Reagan. President Reagan would have supported this move whole heartedly I’m sure! It’s a great day in America, and yet another staggering loss of what are many to come for the Rethuglican’t far right wackos like Limplaugh, Coultergeist, Insanity Hannity, FIX Noise, and the like!!
WTF???March 9th, 2009 - 1:05 pm
Yay! Thank you America for finally seeing the light and voting an intelligent man to run our country.
I truly think Obama has the best interest of the country at heart and, along with all the best experts he can find, is making decisions based on the best and most up to date research and finally bringing us into the 21st Century.
For those of you who don’t agree–well, take a stand & when a loved one of yours is fatally ill and could be helped by the improvements in science gained by stem cell research “Just say No” …that will show ‘em!
AirwickMarch 9th, 2009 - 1:10 pm
WTF???
That was going to be my next point! Good observation! If you really disapprove of embryonic stem cell research than feel free to refuse any and ALL therapies that may derive from this line of research.
My suggestion is that you pray extra hard for a “miracle” to cure yourself or your loved one(s). Then if God/Jesus wants to intervene, good for you! If not, well…
At least you will die with your “moral values” intact!
AirwickMarch 9th, 2009 - 1:11 pm
I find it interesting that the Obama-haters seem to focus more on how Mr. Obama delivers a message (with a teleprompter) rather than what is said.

“We will lift the ban for federal funding for promising stem cell research” . . . “At this moment the full promise of stem cell research remains unknown and it should not be overstated” . . . “I cannot guarantee that we will find the treatments and cures we seek” . . . “by doing this we will ensure America’s continued global leadership in scientific discovery and technological breakthroughs”
Wait, what? Excuse me Lord Obama, forgive my brain for not being intelligent enough, but I don’t understand.

James,
Since your brain is “not intelligent enough” to “understand” what Mr. Obama is saying, allow me to translate for you.
“We will lift the ban for federal funding for promising stem cell research”…The Federal Government will lift the ban on federal funding for stem cell research.
“At this moment the full promise of stem cell research remains unknown and it should not be overstated” . . . We know that stem cell research has great potential but don’t expect any miracle cures right away.
“I cannot guarantee that we will find the treatments and cures we seek” . . . There are no guarantees when you are dealing with research. However, you will never know if studies will lead to potential treatments or cures unless you try. Often the knowledge you gain from doing research leads to secondary discoveries that are important, too.
“By doing this we will ensure America’s continued global leadership in scientific discovery and technological breakthroughs”…We have been standing around watching others pursue this line of research while handicapping our own scientists. We should be the leaders in stem cell research and NOT relegated to reading about the accomplishments of others.

Dear Pity Mary Pat…I didn’t realize that you had posted just prior to mine. How appropriate.
Perhaps, with all the killing of new babies in the wombs of “so called” mothers your job as Principal at the Palombie Middle School in Lake Ville Illinois will be eliminated when you have no new students to spread your propaganda too!
I am praying that one of your PTA parents who are conservatives will one day read your vile and vindicative posts on this site.
Hoping for the murder of more babies in the womb to feed stem cell research and telling conservatives to go commit suicide is quite unappropriate for the Principal of a school of young children.
You are a disgrace to the teaching profession. Not only because of your views…you are entitled to them…but because you advertise your stupidity by posting just who you are and are proud of those views in spite of that.
I can tell you this for a fact, if you were the Principal at the school of one of my children and you blatantly advertised your political left wing views on a school site and gave out the same on the internet…you would be fired so fast it would make your head spin!
YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO WOMANHOOD AND TO EDUCATION!
GOD HELP US ALL, AMERICA, WITH EDUCATIONAL LEADERS LIKE THIS WOMAN…PITY MARY PAT!
Eileen for Freedom/LibertyMarch 9th, 2009 - 2:48 pm
America…I want research to be done to help Americans who are suffering greatly with disease…I sympathize with their plight and the need for research.
But President Bush agreed with this research but using ONLY the stem cells available for research already.
But removing this feature allows for the killing of more babies to get more stem cells.
What happens, America, when a demand is great for anything…you will see a greater desire to provide for the demand.
That is what is going to happen with stem cells…now that it is legal again and more researchers need more…the demand for more stem cells will take place and the murder of millions of more babies will take place.
Let me tell you, America, we wonder why things are going so wrong in America…it is because we have turned our backs on the laws of OUR God…we kill babies to heal adults!
Everyone who is involved in some way…with the killing of innocent babies in the wombs of their “so called” mothers…will be held accountable for that disposable of human life…created and given by our God.
One day each and everyone of us will stand before our creator…every man and every woman that has lived in this world since the beginning of man to the end of time…will stand before God and give account of what he/she did in this life. Every child that was aborted will stand as a witness before those who took their lives and prevented them from living out God’s purpose for their lives.
God help you all…for what you have done and what you are doing!

===============================
Considering how much Obama has strayed from the teaching in the Bible, he fits the description provided by the apostle Paul in his second letter to Timothy. Paul says “men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” Obama’s position on abortion, homosexuality and other issues (and his own mocking of the Bible), fits the description. And Pauls calls these people “evil men and impostors.”
Spurgeon wrote “It were a sad dishonour to a child of God to be the world’s favourite. It is a very ill omen to hear a wicked world clap its hands and shout ‘Well done’ to the Christian man.”
REMMarch 9th, 2009 - 3:22 pm
You know what would have been an addition to this speach? The cures they have so far found with embryonic stem cell.
Okay, now that the sound of crickets has faded from the air, realize that the track record. Adult stem cells massively overwhelm the number of cures from embryonic cells, do the research yourself and don’t criticize one of the best Bush-era policies.
I would go on, but Eileen explaned it pretty well already.
*Pray America, we’re gonna need it. The further people try to remove God and His rules, the closer this country gets to collapse.
No Embryonic ResearchMarch 9th, 2009 - 3:33 pm
President Obama, there is no concensus among the populations (your just like Al Gore, you gather those who agree with you and they declare concensus). All true Christians oppose this experimentation on human life.
Adult stem cells have treated hundreds of conditions.
I love REM’s logic (or the lack thereof). Let’s see…we will do everything that we can to inhibit embryonic stem cell research THEN we will complain that they didn’t find any magic “cures”.
Adult stem cells HAVE led to many promising findings.
NOW we can compare them to similar experiments utilizing embryonic stem cells. THAT should be interesting…
AirwickMarch 9th, 2009 - 4:18 pm
Hey, No Embryonic Research, I would like to know one thing.
Fawooosh!
Ooops! Excuse me…that was the sound of clinics flushing unwanted in vitro embryos down the sewer.
Somehow THAT is fine with “true” Christians but using the same embryos for research that may alleviate human suffering is not. Where is the logic on this?
WTF???March 9th, 2009 - 4:43 pm
Hey Airwick,
Haven’t you figured it out yet? There are NO “True” Christians on this site. Only Christians of convince or as I like to call them, “closet atheists” because of their hateful and unthoughtful remarks!
James KMarch 9th, 2009 - 5:38 pm
Oh Airwick, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for interpreting what Comrade Obama was meaning. Let me make sure I have it straight . . .
The people’s government will resume spending tax-payer money on the morally controversial issue of stem-cell research, which is—to some ethereal degree—promising; instead of letting the free-market determine the level of promise this research involves, allowing private organizations composed of some of the greatest thinkers and industrialists to walk the earth to estimate the risk and benefit, and assume individual responsibility for any monetary ventures into the area.
Nevertheless, the government composed of politicians whose duty is to serve the citizens of this country by wisely and cautiously using money which is not their own, will filter money into a scientific enterprise in which there are no guarantees. Moreover, it is our (citizens of the US) duty to fund this research because we don’t know how promising this venture will be. Additionally, if we fund this project and it fails, i.e. we (the world) will gain some sort of scientific knowledge from our (citizens of the US) expense.
Continuing, we American tax payers, through our government, have been standing around watching other organizations, either private or state, funnel their money into this line of research which has to-date provided minimal, promising results. Consequently, our idling is handicapping some of the more intelligent individuals in the world, American scientists, from finding funding for research in an area which private organizations could provide if they thought it was promising enough. Thus concluding, we Americans, as a society, should be the leaders in funneling money into this line of research whose estimate of promise is unknown; in order that we would not be relegated to reading about the accomplishments of private/free-market organizations who at their own risk assumed responsibility for the possible degree of promise by discriminately distributing their own funds into the line of research of their own choosing.
Thank you, I think I understand now.

No government, has the right to use tax dollars for human embryonic research.
AirwickMarch 9th, 2009 - 10:56 pm
James,
As usual you and the anti-embryonic stem cell types have NOT gotten it straight yet.
This line of research is only “morally controversial” to a relatively small (but very loud) portion of the population. The vast majority of scientists (including those doing adult stem cell research) support it. I know the word “scientist” is used as a pejorative in the far right Christian community and they constantly sneer at scientific theories (like evolution) while understanding little (or nothing) of the details that comprise those theories.
The idea that private organizations and the free market should drive this research is disingenuous. It is precisely because of the restrictions placed by the Federal Government (until today) that many institutions chose to NOT pursue it. The way the system worked, if any part of a lab received Federal money than the rest of the establishment could NOT use fetal cells UNLESS they were totally segregated and did not have ANY overlapping functions. For example, you were faced with the inane situation that a group receiving Federal funds could not share equipment (like centrifuges, hoods, and so forth) if fetal stem cells were used in that lab. You had to set up redundant systems and personnel even if it was not needed. It became so cumbersome that many labs simply avoided it (which was precisely the effect that opponents desired). In addition, institutions such as the National Institutes of Health which are federally funded and contain a large population of extremely bright scientists (perhaps the largest in the World) could not effectively engage in it. By banning embryonic stem cell research you are effective removing “some of the greatest thinkers” from participating in it. Using your logic, we should shut down the entire institute and let the free-market decide ALL medical research. The essence of research (and scientific experimentation) is to formulate a hypothesis and then attempt to disprove that hypothesis. There are NO guarantees. All you can hope for is information that will add to the knowledge pool and be potentially valuable later. You may not like it, but that is simply the way the system works.
One of the main reasons that scientists want to study embryonic stem cells is the incredible potential that they possess. Most taxpayers support it…even such noted liberals as Nancy Reagan. The idea that we need EVERYONE to support a program before we can employ it is nonsense. Using those criteria we would no longer be in Iraq or fund it (the MAJORITY of Americans oppose that war).
Once again…what is your response to that “Fawoosh!” sound that you just heard? Why is it “morally correct” to destroy these “nascent Human lives” when they are no longer needed but “morally controversial” to use them in research that could give us answers that may be used to treat some of our greatest medical problems that affect actual, suffering individuals?
Kenny CMarch 9th, 2009 - 11:08 pm
Stem Cell Research…….bull sheit……this is how Dr. Coathanger justifies killing babies for cash and Libs have an excuse for aborting…..it does have a plus…..less liberals
James KMarch 10th, 2009 - 1:41 am
Airwick, I love your confidence (I hope it’s not hubris).
Who do you allege says that it’s morally correct to destroy unnecessary human lives and morally controversial to use them in research?
I don’t think you are disagreeing that stem cell research is morally controversial. Just that it is morally controversial to a small portion of the population.
I haven’t seen or heard any statistics showing that the majority of scientists support it. I keep statistics out of my arguments. They are hard to prove and harder to prove they aren’t biased (if you’ve ever taken a statistics course, you know how easy it is to manipulate numbers).
I do understand that you don’t support Majority Rule (I agree). I will not, of course, point out the errors of a majority of scientists (or people) throughout history, because no one claims that scientists are always correct. As you must know, a vast majority of scientists once supported a flat earth and spontaneous generation. Time will tell if a majority of scientists are correct about evolution, global warming, etc. People, however, do expect scientist to look at all the facts. I believe that a majority of Christians feel that a majority of scientists have become stubborn, have not considered all of the facts and have not debated sufficiently. That’s my perspective as to why you notice what you do concerning Christians and scientists. As you probably also know, many scientists throughout history were also Christian (or at least deist).
So then, back to our ideological disagreement: who should rule?
Let me make myself clear; as you said, using my logic, we should shut down the entire institute and let the free-market decide all medical research. Precisely. I am not being disingenuous, hypocritical, or insincere. America functioned and became prosperous in the first hundred years (approximately) of its existence without the NIH. You yourself have given a great example of why I believe this way, allow me to show you:
You said that the way the system worked, if any lab received federal money it, ultimately, could not use fetal cells. And you expounded on this example. And I agree with you. It is preposterous that the government should intervene so much in the regulation of research. And so I ask why is government determining which areas of research can and cannot be funded? Why is government involved in science at all? Just because you agree with the area of research now, will you always? Hasn’t history taught us what happens when government supports science, just as it has when government supports religion? Why not separation of science and state?
If the majority is not supposed to rule (like we agree) then who is? You? Me? The Minority? The Strongest? The Bourgeoisie? The Congress? The President? God? I say none of these. But that there only one thing that should rule . . . you probably now know what I am thinking of . . .
You also said correctly that I may not like it, but that is the way the system works. Well Airwick, I don’t like it! And as long as I remain a free man, I’ll try to change it to where I like it.
