Just because a previous President allocated money for “socialist-like” programs, doesn’t make it o.k. that you do.
Another thought–maybe the New York Times, by asking this question, has realized that tending to their liberal ways for so long hasn’t paid off. Maybe they’re realizing, like the liberal radio shows that have failed, that the true market is in conservatism.

By his own admission, Bush started the type of policies for which the Democrats praise Obama. If Obama is the “hope” for this country, then why wasn’t Bush while he was doing the same things?
Secondly, he basically admits that the policies are socialistic.
Is he saying the policies are good, or bad? If they are good, then he must give the credit for the initiation to Bush, as he says. If they are bad policies, then why is he continuing and increasing them?

What I slowly realized (back in the 1980s before I fled the right) was that the religious right and Republican leadership that my dad and I were helping to gain power were not “conservatives” at all in the old sense of the word. They were anti-American religious revolutionaries.
The right had once been led by people like James Buckley and Senator Barry Goldwater who stood for the separation of church and state. The religious right, as it emerged in the late 1970s — and consequently the Republican Party it took over — was all about religiously-motivated “morality” which it used for nakedly political (and fund raising) purposes. This was a throwback to an earlier ugly time when 1930s fascist xenophobic hate-mongers like Father Charles Coughlin and his vicious anti-Roosevelt radio program were influential.
Father Coughlin would have loved today’s congressional Republican leadership. He started a radio “ministry,” moved it steadily to the populist right, then identified the “enemy”—in Coughlin’s case Roosevelt, in today’s Republican’s case — President Obama. Coughlin yesterday, Dobson and Limbaugh, Coulter today: new names, same hate.
In the 1970s and 80s the leaders of the religious right were gleefully betting on American moral failure in the way Limbaugh and the Republicans are now rooting for Obama’s (and America’s) economic failure in 2009. If secular, democratic, diverse gay-tolerant and pluralistic America survives, then wouldn’t that prove that the Republicans are wrong about God only wanting to bless a “Christian” (white!) America of low taxes, and unregulated markets?
What began to bother me back in the 80s was that so many of my new “friends” on the religious right seemed to be rooting for one form of apocalypse or another. In the crudest form this was part of the evangelical fascination with the so-called End Times. The worse things got, the sooner Jesus would come back. But there was another component: the worse everything got the more it proved that America needed saving, by us!
And now the religious right infection (of wanting failure to score a moral/religious point) has become the the Republican illness: root for failure so “we” win ideologically!
Today the Republican Party is rooting for doom. And since the Republicans are now anti-American members of an Obama-must-fail insurgency, lies become a self-fulfilling prophecy: talk doom, and keep the economy in a panic and we may get what we wish for.
Don’t conservative Republicans object to the lies? No, because the Republicans don’t have any actual and traditional conservative followers left. The Republican base is now made up of religious and neoconservative ideologues, and the uneducated white underclass with a token person of color or two up front on TV to obscure the all-white, all reactionary all backward — there-is-no-global-warming — rube reality. Actual conservatives, let alone the educated classes, have long since fled.
The Republican religious nuts are rooting for Jesus to “rapture” them, not for America, and the neoconservatives are rooting for war and the Israeli hard liners, not for America. Truth (and sanity) are out the window.
So, what is the problem with lying to our faces, say, claiming that all American’s taxes are going up when 95% of American’s taxes are going to go down? Why not claim Obama is a socialist, even if he’s not? Why not say anything at all to drive our country into a pit when losing is seen as winning? That, is all the Republicans have to offer America: more lies on a path to destruction from which the Republican “leadership” plans to resurrect themselves and “save” America from Obama.
This is why we need to vote out all of the so-called conservative people like John McCain that went along with all these socialist things over the years. It just helps the people intent on bringing on socialism do and say “everyone does it”
Until then.. Well we will keep getting more of the same!

People have already raised the point about if Obama is blaming Bush for bad policy, why is he continuing full steam ahead with the same policy only ratcheted up a few million notches. My question is, what is HIS record on these issues. I remember when he was running for prez and all this was going on McCain went to DC to try and get something done (though he failed – miserably). Obama stood around with his thumb in his rear and didn’t endorse or condemn the plan at all. As a matter of memory, didn’t he even refrain from voting on the bailout? What a jerk.

My a$$!!! Mr. Obama, were you not a member of Congress when these measures were up for vote? Isn’t Congress responsible for the allocation of federal funds? Didn’t the Democrat controlled Congress basicly tell Bush ’sign off on these or you don’t get money for the war.’? I am upset that these got signed off on in the first place. I always thought Bush should have held a press conference and said something along the lines of ‘Members of Congress are holding the safety of America’s sons and daughters hostage. They seem to believe that it is okay to play politics using soldiers lives. I refuse to sign any legislation that does not get the soldiers what they need to not just survive, but to persevere. Furthermore, I refuse to sign off on any legislation that simultaneously underfunds the fighting forces and includes legislation that undermines the ability of the average american worker to keep what they earn.’ Bush, whether it was for expedience or an attempt at bi-partisanship, accepted the deal and paid the ransom instead of exposing the members of Congress. Talk about “pay to play.” The media should have been all over that one too. But the only reports of it that the public saw were about how evil Bush was for vetoing all drafts of funding bills that included a timetable for troop withdrawls. Nevermind the fact that we stayed in Iraq after the capture of Sadaam to satisfy a UN mandate, one that had been renewed yearly at the request of the Iraqi government. Don’t believe me? Search google with the terms UN IRAQ MANDATE. Amazingly enough, the “invasion” into Iraq was under a UN resolution too. Solutions for american jobs
1. Payroll Tax Stimulus. With a temporary new tax credit to offset 50% of the payroll tax, every small business would have more money, and all Americans would take home more of what they earn.
2. Real Middle-Income Tax Relief. Reduce the marginal tax rate of 25% down to 15%, in effect establishing a flat-rate tax of 15% for close to 9 out of 10 American workers.
3. Reduce the Business Tax Rate. Match Ireland’s rate of 12.5% to keep more jobs in America.
4. Homeowner’s Assistance. Provide tax credit incentives to responsible home buyers so they can keep their homes.
5. Control Spending So We Can Move to a Balanced Budget. This begins with eliminating Congressional earmarks and wasteful pork-barrel spending.
6. No State Aid Without Protection From Fraud. Require state governments to adopt anti-fraud and anti-theft policies before giving them more money.
7. More American Energy Now. Explore for more American oil and gas and invest in affordable energy for the future, including clean coal, ethanol, nuclear power and renewable fuels.
8. Abolish Taxes on Capital Gains. Match China, Singapore and many other competitors. More investment in America means more jobs in America.
9. Protect the Rights of American Workers. We must protect a worker’s right to decide by secret ballot whether to join a union, and the worker’s right to freely negotiate. Forced unionism will kill jobs in America at a time when we can’t afford to lose them.
10. Replace Sarbanes-Oxley. This failed law is crippling entrepreneurial startups. Replace it with affordable rules that help create jobs, not destroy them.
11. Abolish the Death Tax. Americans should work for their families, not for Washington.
12. Invest in Energy and Transportation Infrastructure. This includes a new, expanded electric power grid and a 21st century air traffic control system that will reduce delays in air travel and save passengers, employees and airlines billions of dollars per year.

Senator Kyl (correction – my other posts said McCain that was incorrect) proposed an amendment today that would guarantee that none of this $900 million would go to Hamas. Guess what…your representatives in the Senate defeated it.
