The History Channel needs to stick to covering hard science and real history, not conjecture or kook theories.

An asteroid of a similar size to a rock that exploded above Siberia in
1908 with
the force of a thousand atomic bombs whizzed close past Earth on Monday,
astronomers said on Tuesday(March 2nd, 2009).

2009 DD45, estimated to be between 21 and 47 meters (68 and 152 feet)
across, raced
by at 1344 GMT on Monday, the Planetary Society and astronomers’ blogs
reported.

The gap was just 72,000 kilometers (44,750 miles), or a fifth of the
distance
between Earth and the Moon and only twice the height of satellites in
geosynchronous orbit, the website space.com said.

The estimated size is similar to that of an asteroid or comet that
exploded above
Tunguska, Siberia, on June 30 1908, flattening 80 million trees in a
swathe of more
than 2,000 square kilometres (800 square miles).

Aw, c’mon, Woody. Lighten up. As a geologist, I find this particular subject intriguing…no small part due to the fact that the former USSR has allowed very little of the originally-obtained data to be released for scientific evaluation.

I do, however, agree that there needs to be emphasis placed on “theory” versus “fact”, as it does science a disservice to add fuel to conspiracy theories. That being said, the blast did happen, and by virtue of that, should be analyzed. I hold that the only true failing of science is when it dismisses (or reinforces) a theory or event without going through the due process of the scientific method. To that end, the same could be said about the virtual non-existance of dialogue over the merits of the theory of climate change, but that’s another story…
